one (1) person said they wanted to hear more about the alex de minaur jannik sinner narrative so here we go
it is 2019. your name is alex de minaur. you are 20. you are seeded first in the atp next-gen finals, you have three actual atp titles, you're ranked 18th in the world, and you're an aquarius man; consequently, you are somewhat full of yourself. you wear tennis gear with your ridiculous nickname on it. you speak spanish every two seconds in the documentary, because you must show off. you believe you are, by all rights, The Main Character.
then this skinny italian wild card pops up and destroys you.
okay. that's fine. embarrassing!!! but fine. whatever. we move on. he's cool! you're friends! let's keep going. at the end of 2020, you run into him again in the sofia quarterfinals, where you take the first set and then he destroys you again. with a breadstick to really rub it in. he goes on and wins the whole thing, which means he wrecked you on his way to his first-ever atp title. fine! okay. whatever.
it is 2021. you don't see him again, which is just as well, because you have a soaring high and then a terrible low (string of r1/r2 losses). you drop to 34th in the world; meanwhile, jannik sinner has spent the year going from 37th to cracking the top 10. things are not looking great.
in 2022, you make it to the third round of the auso for the first time, where you meet—guess who—jannik sinner. again. you're starting to get really tired of this guy. he knocks you out of your home slam. thankfully you have a relatively successful year afterwards, climbing back up the ranks.
it's 2023! this will be your year, surely. you kick it off by winning your first 500. the sunshine double doesn't go great but you do brilliantly at queen's club and los cabos, only losing in the finals to top 10 players. then.... Canada.
you beat fritz. you beat medvedev. you make it to the final of a 1000 for the first time! and then jannik sinner is there in all his ginger glory, and, well. you know how this is going to go. bye-bye first 1000 title, hello increasingly miserable h2h. you start wondering if you're going to be there for all of this guy's career-defining wins. you start wondering why the hell it had to be you specifically. this is getting ridiculous. because now it's 2024 and he won the whole entire australian open and then to really seal in the whole thing he had to go and beat you, specifically in rotterdam to make some more history.
and like, you guys are friends. pretty good friends, actually. you played doubles once and it was hilarious!! but also, consistent and absolute annihilation??? seriously???
in summary i find their friendship absolutely mindbending. alex de minaur you must be the nicest person ever because personally if someone did me like this i would spend my entire life trying to blow them up with my mind

iirc you once said you liked subtle romance are there any movies or books that fit that description you can recommend?
hii sorry i forgot to answer this!
Please do recommend me stuff with similar elements, especially movies and books :))
I don't remember what I said this about but yes! The levels of subtlety might differ but I also really like when romance between two people is expressed in a non-direct way.
Some of these are not romance-focused but have a small part of it in them, some that I can think of for now: -Las Acacias (2011) - saw this one recently and some might call it boring but i was super invested in the minimal-dialog comunication between the two characters
-Leon Morin, Priest (1961) - i think my friends are sick of me talking about this one but you just HAVE to give this a try if you're into repression and melancholy in romance. Also hot priest <3
-I Dream in Another Language (2017) - it has magical realism! it has resentment! it has old people! Really really really reccomend this one, its a fave!
-Moonlight (2016) - not particularly a romance film entirely but it has a very touching moment of confrontation.. i need to revisit this one
-Fallen Leaves (2023) - anything by Karusimaki can be called subtle romance i think but i especially like this one :) The tone is very light and i like the northern humor
-The Lunchbox (2013) - also kind of slow but full of nice little moments
-Compartment No.6 (2021) - starts out as somewhat annoying (at least for me) but i warmed up to the characters later on. I like watching outcast people bonding over the story :)
-Phantom Thread (2017)- when you find the perfect someone who can handle your issues in their own unique way :3
-Amour (2012) - A different approach to love between an old couple. Theres one scene in this one that just makes me really sad but i wont say which.
-Love Letter (1995) , Brief Encounter(1945) , Frantz (2016) , The Appartment (1960) , Patterson (2016), Pain and Glory (2019) , In the Mood for Love (2000), Happy Together (1997), Portrait of a Lady on Fire(2019) , Before Trilogy (but especially Before Sunset, the second one), Last Life in the Universe (2003), A New Leaf (1971), Silence of the Lambs (listen it IS romance to me.), Sabrina (1954)- i put this here solely for the boat scene :)
I don't read many romance books but here are some that have romance i like:
-Stardust
-The Queen's Thief series(oof course :3 especially books 2,3 and 5 are my faves)
-Spinning Silver (has 2 seperate couples but i like one more than the other :3)
-Persuasion (by jane austen)
-Howl's Moving Castle (a fave!)
-The Mirror Visitor series
-Keturah and Lord Death (idr this one very well but it's a death and the maiden theme and pretty short!) , Curse of Chalion and it's sequel Paladin of Souls have some slowburn in them, Eyes of a Blue Dog (its a very unique short story by gabriel garcia marquez) , Chang ge Xing (manga)

Imma need an in-depth breakdown of Puff please! And I’m not being sarcastic either. Puff pre-dates my time in the outlander fandom.
Regards,
Your curious anon.
Dear Puffy Curious Anon,
If my cantankerous boss would have summoned me at 03:03 pm EEST (when your request landed in my inbox), just to tell me "Imma need an in-depth breakdown of the Greek trade unions' position on the current critical understaffing of the HoReCa sector", I would have politely answered "yes, ma'am, when is the deadline". I would have then turned on my heels, rolled my eyes, sworn like a drunk sailor under my breath (fuck my life comes to mind, pardon my French) and quickly be done with it.
You, bless your Anon heart, wrote: "Imma need an in-depth breakdown of Puff, please". Wee difference, Curious Anon: you are not my cantankerous boss. That being said, since the question has been asked by several people in the comment threads of the day's posts, I am gonna give you my two cents on Queen Pufflander, even if you've been around before I even knew this weird place existed. And hopefully put to rest this nonsense forever (wishful thinking, doubt it will happen).
Once upon a time, when S&C's bantering was the plat du jour on Twitter and this fandom a considerably less toxic place, Puff the Magic Dragon of the US East Coast was one of the Queen Bees of Shipperville. Her blog was witty and no-nonsense (if a tad verbose) and, as *urv, she quickly earned her fair share of side performers: Stella and Deep Throat (SOURCES) or the tarot reader(s) immediately come to mind. People loved Puff and that is only fair, to be honest: I bet the farm she was great fun. Little by little, information traded in DMs started to pile up in her famed Vault, from which she was generously sharing, from time to time, sibylline rants ("maybe they did or maybe they didn't, but don't worry, something happened and all shall soon be revealed"). I can critique that forever and a day and tell you that all this sent people's expectations up the roof and beyond, of course. But, again: I was not here. It is unfairly easy to judge all these things with a historian's eye, and people who lived to tell the tale are far more entitled than me to comment their fandom experience, circa 2015.
When the whole Shatner/Watchtower baliverne started (early 2016, if memory serves) things ugly escalated and rather quickly so. People started jumping ship. With McSideburns already in the house (EIFF comes to mind and a certain poignant S&C penguin picture, too), enter Flukenzie Floozy. Thus, after IFH, Puffy decided to pack her crystal ball & tent and move to greener pastures on Wordpress. There, she held court with a keen eye for the Byzantine politicking of this fandom, not unlike what Perfidious Albion did with regard to the Thirteen Rebelling Colonies, after that Boston Tea Party. Her main moments of intersection with the rest of the shipper community are Covfefe Pics (of course) and Remarkable Week-end (of course). With regard to Covfefe, she quickly cried wolf, but by the time Remarkable Week-end happened, she pulled off a mighty witty breakdown of The Nuptial Charade of the Century. Blaze of glory was Quarantein Ha-wa-wee (of course), when she blamed S for all the world's evils and then some more. After that, she concentrated on her Neverending Feud with *urv (a Private Investigator was, at some point, hired and paid for via crowdfunding), which somehow managed to end (nevertheless) with a Report she might or might not have sent to S, "for further consideration".
As all good prophets, Puffy finally went into Occultation circa 2021, not without warning us that she was torn between Gay Sam & SamCait intellectual traditions, with a wee penchant for the first (reason why I completely ditched her peddling, because IYKYK).
I can understand why people might think I could be Puffy. I am, however, very sure about my own identity, whereabouts and creed: to state the opposite would really, really be mental. I fully assumed my responsibility and went ahead to actually prove you, this morning, I wasn't. Reading her rants was useful, but also taxing. I doubt Stella and Deep Throat were anything else but narrative helpers in a sophisticated Greimas actantial model. Something I would never do, for example: I am confident enough not to need any crutches. And I am very, very sorry for this word vomit: it should come, perhaps, as solace its length could never compete with Puff's storytelling marathons.
To wash my sins (not really: because I really love that picture), here's S,C, a penguin and a cakebox (?), at EIFF 2015. This is, you can be certain, the purest thing on this page, Anon:

stunning how in “the green knight (2021)”, so much is dictated by the haunting spectre of How This Should Go. how gawain keeps remembering himself - who he’s supposed to be - and saying his lines as if cued. how he keeps breaking from the script until the script breaks completely. how everything he gains - a son, a queen, the kingship, his knighthood - all feel dirty and tainted by getting them despite breaking the script. he went on a heroes journey and didn’t act heroic. he didn’t refuse temptation. he wasn’t generous without prompting. he wasn’t brave in the face of death. he wanted all glory and no cost and it cast him as a hollow shell. all actors. all plays. rote and hollow.

Tell me about your creatively named "Stargate Fanfic". 😁
"Stargate Fanfic" my beloved! It's funny that you ask about this one because it's the long fic I gifted to you way back in 2021! It was my first stargate fic and even after it got its "Across the Universe" title, I never changed the doc name. Now she and her huge word count sits unassumingly in my files, waiting for me to finally finish her.
You already know the plot but I'll pitch it for anyone else. It started as a "faking dating" fic and then kinda spiraled into a passion project AU where John and Todd the Wraith get kiddnapped by Wraith and have to find their way back home while also falling in love. Like I said, its an AU so theres a lot of my own ideas and at this point I wouldn't necessarily say John and Todd are in character, but I really love it and will be super proud of it when it's finally done!
This snippet is from the current in-progress chapter. Todd is confronting the Wraith Queen who organized his capture (and who is his ex)
Todd closed his eyes, just to feel her one last time. She was still as soft as she’d been all those years ago. Soft and slightly warm under his rough hand. She still seemed so young, but she wasn’t anymore. She was smart not to trust him, that instinct would take her far.
What surprised him is when she said, “You could come with me.”
He pulled his hand away, not because he was disgusted by the prospect, but because it made his heart ache.
She reached out with her own to try and follow his retreat, but halfway through she saw the look in his eyes and withdrew. “Because you love another?”
He could almost laugh. It was far too easy to imagine a life where he went with her and rebuilt what they’d had. It was easy to see himself commanding her Hive and dragging it back to glory. They could be great like they had been before, he was certain of that. The idea was sweet on his mind and his tongue. All prospects involving belonging to a Hive were like; they were nearly irresistible. How hard it was to turn down living in a place he truly belonged.
Like the times before, he almost wanted it – almost. Different from those times, he had a better reason for turning her down.
“It is not Sheppard,” he told her “Though it is true that I have carved a new life out for myself, and that I love another, it is not because of that.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Then what?”
“Because I am not good for you.” The truth was sharp to say.
“What if I forgave you?”
“You won’t, not really. And even if you did, it is possible to forgive Wraith who hurt us and still move on from them. Wraith who hurt us do not always deserve to know us again, least of all me to you. You deserve to make your own life apart from me, truly, without me as a single thought in your mind ever again. I didn’t mean to take your life away, but I did. Take it back. Do not ask me to be by your side when it is the one place I should never be.”
She stared at him for so long that he was afraid she’d frozen there, but at last she took a deep breath, ran her tongue over her bottom lip, and asked in the smallest voice ever, “Even if I still love you?”
“Especially then.”
Thanks for the ask!

Hecate: Goddess Symbols, Correspondences, Myth & Offerings
Tumblr media
Written by Francisco Huanaco Posted on June 8, 2021
A mysterious Greek deity, Hecate lives in the corners of the Greek mythos. A goddess of crossroads, magic, poison, and the undead, Hecate was also the daughter of the Titan Perses and the nymph Asteria, according to Hesiod.
Hecate’s name (Greek: Hekate, Latin: Hecate) means far-reaching one, and hints at this goddess’s wide influence over a variety of earthly and supernatural affairs. Some scholars suggest that this name ties her closely with the goddess Artemis, and that Hecate might actually be a shadowy aspect of Artemis.
Who is Hecate?
Tumblr media
Hecate belongs to a group of deities known as protectors of the oikos, or household. She had good company in this regard, with other protective deities being Zeus, ruler of the gods, and Hermes, the herald of the gods. Her association with boundaries such as walls and doors give her a quality of between-ness.
Hecate mediates between realms: inside the city and outside, the realm of life and the underworld, the household and the world. Hecate’s mediating presence led many followers to ask that bad fortune or malevolent spirits be kept from their household, and Hecate had the power to either rebuff or admit spirits into a home.
Hecate is heavily associated with the crossroads, the place where multiple paths intersect. She, along with Hermes, is responsible for fate that travelers meet on the road, therefor it would be wise for any traveler to make offerings to the goddess in hopes of a safe journey.
Hecate: Goddess Facts
Tumblr media
The ancient Greek poet Hesiod noted that Hecate received much praise from Zeus, the King of Mount Olympus. Zeus often showered Hecate with gifts, and the other immortal deities of the Greek pantheon honor her as well in their various ways. Hesiod even goes so far as to say that when a human makes a sacrifice, that human invokes the power of Hecate herself and it is her decision whether to bestow fortune and happiness upon that person.
The goddess Hecate watches battles and determines whom she will grant the glory of victory to. Athletes, as well, operate under the auspices of Hecate for they also want the glory of victory. Among others that Hecate takes a keen interest in are horsemen, sailors and fishers, and children.
The goddess was also known for her closeness to both medicines and poisons. She taught other mythological figures such as the witch Medea how to work with Magic. Those who practiced the Eleusinian Mysteries (the most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece) paid homage to Hecate, and psychoactive and hallucinogenic plants were unsurprisingly associated with her as well. Many magical and esoteric practices occurred at the Eleusinian Mysteries. Hecate’s presence as a goddess of the Mysteries imply that she played a significant part in moving from a normal state of consciousness into the state of ecstatic madness that the Mysteries became famous for.
Working with Hecate
The best way to connect with Hecate, like any goddess or god, is through the mythology, epithets and symbols. Here’s a summary of the most important tales featuring the goddess Hecate, and how to worship Her in your personal pagan practice.

Myth of Hecate
In the stories, Hecate helped the gods in their struggle against the Gigantes, the hundred giants mothered by Gaia. The Gigantes were known for their aggression, and Hecate killed the giant Clytius with her famous torches. She also assisted Zeus in his war against the Titans, despite being born to a Titan herself. Odysseus, the hero of the Odyssey, took Queen Hecuba as a slave after the fall of Troy. When Hecuba slew a king and was in turn killed for her crimes, the gods transformed Hecuba into a black dog, whereupon she became Hecate’s animal companion.
One of Hecate’s most famous roles in Greek mythology is when she serves as psychopomp to Persephone. A psychopomp is a being involved in the transmigration of the soul. The mythic ferryman Charon is one such figure, ferrying the souls of dead across the river Styx. Likewise, Hecate performs this function with Persephone.
Hecate and Persephone
Persephone, to give a quick backstory, was the daughter of the harvest goddess Demeter. Zeus gave the god of the underworld, Hades, permission to abduct Persephone (goddess of vegetation and spring) and take her into the netherworld. Demeter enlisted the aid of Hecate in the search of her daughter Persephone. Hecate brought her famous torches to help and she and Demeter searched and searched for Persephone to no avail. Eventually, the environment and the harvest ground to a halt.
Nothing would grow from the Earth, and soon thereafter living things began to die off with no regeneration. Dismayed at this sorry state of affairs, Zeus sent the messenger god Hermes to the underworld to fetch Persephone. Hades agreed to allow Persephone to leave, but he tricked her into eating the seeds of a pomegranate. Since she tasted of the fruit, Persephone was obligated to spend the winter in the underworld with Hades and the rest of the year with her mother and the gods.
Tumblr media
In some versions of the story, Hermes is the only one who leads Persephone out of the underworld after this occurs. However, there has been artwork depicting Persephone leaving the underworld as Hermes stands to the side. In this depiction, it is Hecate that leads Persephone out with her trademark torches that she had used earlier to search for the missing goddess. As the goddess of boundaries, it is fitting that Hecate be the one to lead Persephone across the threshold of the dead, back into the world of light and the living.
Hecate as Goddess of the Underworld
Hecate’s association with the Underworld meant that she often spent time there. She would frequently accompany Persephone whenever Persephone had to return for the winter months. Hades welcomed Hecate into the underworld, and this hospitality played a part in Hecate’s association with ghosts, necromancy, and other darker magical phenomena. Hecate’s triple head and her association with both the underworld and dogs may also hint at the triple-headed guardian of the Greek underworld, Cerberus, but this connection is rather tenuous.
Greek Goddess of Magic
Hecate’s legacy has been kept alive in the imagination, far past the days of Ancient Greece. Shakespeare mentions her in two of his most famous plays, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and there have been several new religious movements as late as the 1920s that performed mysterious rituals and sacrifices in Hecate’s honor.
Hecate is a versatile goddess. The Queen of the Night, she influences events in the heavens, on the earth, and at sea, thereby guaranteeing that she touches life whether it flies, swims, or walks. Her association with medicine and poison give her dominion over sickness and health, as well as mind-altering states brought on by psychoactive substances. In this sense, Hecate helps facilitate altered states of mind, watching over individuals as they travel to the inner depths. And her fondness of dogs implies a fondness for animals and companionship.
Hecate’s most important aspect, however, is that of the boundary-walker. Like many other deities of liminal spaces, Hecate can often be polymorphous, taking a different shape based on the situation. She is a fluid and mysterious goddess. Some fear her, some revere her, but all should respect her as she tends to the places that delineate the known from the unknown. She appears in triplicate, and three is an appropriate number for the goddess of boundaries: inside, outside, and Hecate, the one who travels freely in between.
Symbols of Hecate
Tumblr media
One of the most famous symbols of Hecate is the triple-formed statue. The Greeks would place these triple-formed statues near a pole, much in the same way the herms of Hermes would be used to fend off evil or misfortune. In latter-day paganism, Hecterions (a form of pillar) depict the goddess with six arms, three torches and three sacred symbols: A Key, A Rope and A Dagger.
Tumblr media
Hecate’s Key is a key to the underworld, Hecate unlocks the secrets of the occult mysteries and knowledge of afterlife.
The Rope, sometimes referred to as a cord or scourge, symbolizes the umbilical cord of rebirth and renewal.
The Dagger or Athame is a symbol of ritual power. It cuts away delusion and brings empowerment and trust to our judgment.
Tumblr media
Torches: Hecate is often shown holding two torches, symbolic of her role as guide and initiator in the Eleusian Mysteries. Hecate acted as guide and companion to Persephone in the myth and in the ceremonies enacted each year, marking the seasonal changes and the growth of and harvest of the grain of the Goddess Demeter. Her torches provided light in the darkness, taking the seeker on a journey of initiation, helping them to overcome the restrictions of the obstacles they would find in their way. The torches continue to be an important symbol of her mysteries, the fire and the light of illumination, not of darkness, but of light.
Tumblr media
Hecate’s Dogs: She often took the form of a dog, as well as taking on dog companions. In the Greek myth, Hecate became Persephone’s guide and companion in the Underworld. It is said that the howl of a dog may herald the arrival of the Far-Reaching Goddess. Early depictions of Hecate’s dogs were friendly and affable; but later on the goddess’s dogs suggested demons or agitated spirits, but what led to this shift in perception is a matter of speculation.
Tumblr media
Hecate’s Sigil
Hecate’s Sigil: The strophalos is a spinning top, or wheel, used in Magic. It is an emblem of the goddess Hecate. The symbol is said to be the depiction of a labyrinthine serpent around a central spiral. The labyrinthine snake is representative of rebirth and renewal and relates to the three faces of Hecate.
Triple Moon: Hecate is a Triple Moon Goddess connected with the dark aspect of the lunar disc. The Moon has no light of its own, being a dark body. The light that comes from the Moon is reflected sunlight. Hecate is often seen as a part of a Triple Moon Goddess where she embodies the dark face of the New Moon. Hecate was represented in triple form from the early days of her worship.
Crossroads: Boundaries limit us in our day to day life, providing obstacles that we must traverse in order to grow. As the Goddess of Crossroads, Hecate’s role in mediating boundaries, as well as her association with the underworld, make her a goddess of a mystery that’s plagued humans for as long as we’ve known of it: death.
Epithets and Names of Hecate
Here’s a short list of the titles and names of Hecate:
Apotropaia (that turns away/protects)
Chthonia (of the earth/underworld)
Enodia (on the way)
Klêidouchos (holding the keys)
Kourotrophos (nurse of children)
Krokopeplos (saffron cloaked)
Melinoe
Phosphoros, Lampadephoros (bringing or bearing light)
Propolos (who serves/attends)
Propulaia/Propylaia (before the gate)
Soteria (savior)
Trimorphe (three-formed)
Triodia/Trioditis (who frequents crossroads)
How to Worship Hecate
As a “goddess of witchcraft”, Hecate has been incorporated in various systems of modern witchcraft, Wicca and Neopaganism, in some cases associated with the Wild Hunt of Germanic tradition, in others as part of a reconstruction of specifically Greek polytheism, in English also known as “Hellenismos”.
In Wicca, Hecate has in some cases become identified with the “Crone” aspect of the Triple Goddess. The 3 aspects of the Moon are associated to three Greek goddesses:
The Crescent Moon, represented by Artemis (the Maiden), also known as “Diana” in Roman mythology.
The Full Moon, represented by the Selene (the Maid), also known as Luna.
The Waning Moon, represented by Hecate (the Crone), also known as Trivia.
Hecate Correspondences
Hecate’s Associations: Crossroads, entrances, Magic, Witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy and sorcery. She is also considered the protectress of flocks, sailors, and Witches.
Symbols: Torch, currant cakes, crossroads, candles, number 3.
Animals: dogs, horses, sheep, owls, and bats.
Gems: Sapphire, moonstone, black tourmaline, onyx, hematite.
Colors: Orange and black.
Genealogy: Daughter of Perses and Asteria.
Tumblr media
Hecate Offerings
One way to work with Hecate as a Wiccan or Neopagan, is to craft an Altar for her. Include her symbols or depiction (such as a statue or an illustration) and leave offerings to Hecate:
Apples, Almonds, Cakes, Garlic, Grapes, Dandelions, Mushrooms, Oak leaves, Feathers, Moonstone.
Other types of offerings popular with Greek deities are bay leaves, fruits, flowers, incense, libations of wine and milk and honey.
Incense for Hecate: Myrrh, Dragon’s Blood, Benzoin, Cinnamon.
Hecate of the Crossroads Incense
Incense making is a meditative and enjoyable way to exercise your creativity! Make this incense for working with the Queen of the Witches, the Goddess of liminal spaces, crossroads and sorcery.
To honor Hecate, burn this incense at a crossroads.
Tumblr media
Hecate Ritual
A simple chant to invoke Hecate, goddess of the crossroads and Queen of the Night:
“Quiet is the night, Dark is the Moon I ask Hecate, the Crone To take Her throne. Sleep, sister, sleep, Be not alarmed, For the Great Goddess Keeps you from harm. Quiet is the night, Dark is the Moon I ask Hecate, the Crone To take Her throne. Sleep, brother sleep, Be not alarmed, For the Great Goddess Holds you in her arms. Quiet is the night Dark is the Moon. We honor Hecate the Crone Who has taken Her throne.”
In summary, Hecate is a goddess of guidance. She is a watchdog for those in need of her, keeping bad influences from crossing over a household boundary. Given her dominion over the underworld, the sea, the sky, the earth, as well as the fates of travelers (of whom we all are), Hecate is enjoying a newfound resurgence in reverence as people re-discover the immense power and protection that this goddess affords those that please her.
Invocations and Prayers
Goddess Hecate Spells
As a goddess of journeys, she oversees the transition from life to death, and, such as in the case of Persephone, from death back into life. Hecate’s torches illuminate the dark, signifying whether or not it is safe to venture through a given doorway or portal, as well as illuminating any strangers nearby.

One more post-Emmys thought:
It seems that in the streaming age there tends to be one show that hangs onto the Emmy glory, at least in the comedy category, for a limited amount of time: in 2018-2019, it was Mrs. Maisel: then we had an off year with the pandemic and Schitt's Creek won everything: then from 2021-2022 Ted Lasso was dominant: now it's The Bear's turn. That will last for another year, I think. In earlier years the same shows and the same people would win over and over, because they were network shows and it was a collective shared cultural experience. Now it's all over the place, and I think attention spans are shorter, and the memory of these shows fades faster. Maisels's fans seemed to be happy with the ending and as someone who keeps track with ratings it did do well there but Amazon Prime did not promote that last season at all, choosing to focus on Citadel, one of their many male-oriented procedurals. Ted Lasso was well-watched but it seemed a lot of fans and people involved with the series were over it by the last season. Now you have The Bear, which I don't think is probably going to have a similar shelf life. Maybe that's not bad.
(It's so weird being a huge fan of a favorite, honestly. Usually I'm into one show that occasionally gets an award like This Is Us at the most).
The other thing I had to say is that (some) House of The Dragon fans have this mistaken belief that Succession was the only thing standing in the way of awards glory for their show. However...the guilds ignored them (SAG, WGA DGA, and PGA) and they did not pick up some acting noms for other award ceremonies but those are voted on by the press, who were adamant that House of The Dragon made up for Game of Thrones 's sins by not disappointing them. The industry doesn't seem to like the show. If Succession is the only thing keeping it from Emmy glory, why didn't they pick up any acting or directing or writing nominations? The Emmys threw those at The White Lotus and The Last of Us even though they didn't win most of them.
It's fine to be an immensely popular popcorn show and nothing else. House of The Dragon seems to win over the media and the fans by giving them what they want: a lurid soap opera about a beleaguered Targ princess who is treated as the pinnacle of royalty but still has to fight "evil" foes who would deny her the coronation she truly deserves. This is the morality play GoT fans and the media wanted and were cruelly denied: the crowning of their beloved Targaryen queen. That's the story they wanted and the one HOTD seeks to tell. It's rather shallow but it's what the fandom screamed for. So thus, no awards.
Now you may say uh Frazzled, the source material for House of The Dragon does not end in an epic triumph for Princess Rhae Rhae. True, but I don't think the writers have gotten that far along and GRRM is pretty much letting them do whatever they want, so we'll see how that shakes out. At the very least they're pretending that Rhaenyra planned to do something about the threat of ice zombies, although it's not clear what. You may also say that not everyone watched GoT to see Daenerys get what she wanted, which is very true, but the Targ fans were the loudest and they included much of the media, so that's who the franchise hopes to please. I myself am still watching HOTD and rooting for the "villains", so I guess a lot of GoT fans chose to overlook the fact that HOTD has a pretty narrow and superficial scope, myself included.
So it's a popcorn show. Nothing wrong with that, really, but I don't expect things to change while it's still on the air.

Sandy Saturdays #3:
It'll Take A Long Time
Tumblr media
Sandy Denny never had a hit record. The only time her voice appeared on the singles chart she was singing in French, turning Dylan's Manfred-Mann-recorded creeper tale from 64 about where Bob's romantic partner is allowed to sleep, If You Gotta Go, Go Now, into an accordion driven novelty track.
youtube
I don't know about you but I'd rather have Sandy tell me where to sleep than Bob, especially given what Dylan's been accused of by a woman who was 12 year old at the time (google it if you must; it's the kinda story that makes the Dollar Bin shudder and quake, wondering if I should be writing about Care Bears or something equally benign instead).
Fairport Convention's awww shucks French language version, Si Tu Dois Partir, skyrocketed to #21 before the buying public moved on to everything else that happened in 1969. I don't imagine the single's Magical Mystery Gore cover art contributed much to sales.
Tumblr media
Within six months Denny quit Fairport Convention. She'd never make the single chart again.
But she should have! If you want to get depressed, spend a little time researching the hit songs from 1972. Denny's not the only essential musician of the era who did not make it big; Van Morrison made his best (brace yourself, here comes a controversial opinion) record that year, Saint Dominic's Preview; its lead single Jackie Wilson Said topped out at #61 (but it was #1, thank goodness, in Ireland!). I think it's a cause for debate whether or not there are 60 better pop songs in history than that shakedown stomp a song. And Joni Mitchell's You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio barely fared any better that same year. But this piece of sorry shat sat at #1 for 6 weeks:
youtube
The song is a fitting soundtrack to every nightmare I've had about dental offices. (It's also kinda good, I guess, especially the part where he worries about his mother; someone outta comb Gilbert's chest hair for him and tell him everything will work out...).
Alone Again (Naturally) did lead to some good in the world, however: Biz Markie took the track and made real art out of it two decades later.
youtube
Maybe it's time for me to hunt for Biz in the Dollar Bin. He's on fire here. The poor guy needed a ride and didn't get one. Then it started snowing! Damn, I forgot about Biz Markie. He's awesome. And then there's this song. Biz Markie!!
youtube
Where were we? Oh yeah: Sandy Denny, 1972. Seriously, imagine if the graceful opening track from Sandy, her second solo record, entitled It'll Take a Long Time, with its orchestral swells and steady, shimmering glory, had not gone unnoticed that year. Imagine if it had dominated the charts instead of Alone Again.
youtube
Biz Markie would have then followed in Denny's footsteps, putting out his own version of her song entitled It'll Take A Long Time (For Biz To Sing This Song) 20 years later. And Sandy's estate would not have attempted to ruin hip hop in response (that's what Gilbert O'Chesthair did: he sued Markie and put the breaks on all the sweet sampling that was going on in early 90's hip hop, thereby shoving great bands like De La Soul into long term creative limbo). Rather, Sandy's estate would have reveled in the attention, spreading her amazing, largely forgotten music far and wide.
Just imagine a world in which everyone grew up knowing It'll Take a Long Time... Donald Trump never would have been our president. Who could like Denny's song and vote for anyone who preaches hate? Biz would have beat the Donald out in 2016, and served as our 2nd Black head of state, bringing peace, stability and voice cracking beats to the world over. Sure, Biz's untimely passing in 2021 would have been cause for global mourning, but his VP, Queen Latifah, would then be our current, first female and first queer, president and, as her first act of office, she would have put statues of Sandy and Biz up in place of some confederate nonsense.
It'll Take a Long, Long Time folks to clean up all the mess we're in. But we can get there.
