It Came From The Wastebasket #11: A Cetothere Change
Cetotheres were a group of small baleen whales, one of three major lineages of these cetaceans alongside the rorquals and the right whales. They first appeared in the fossil record in the mid-Miocene, about 14 million years ago (but are estimated to have actually originated 10-15 million years earlier), and disappeared during the Pleistocene about 2 million years ago.
First recognized in the mid-19th century, for a long time the cetotheres were used as a wastebasket for all fossil baleen whales that didn't clearly fit into any modern whale families. By the start of the 21st century nearly 30 different genera representing numerous different species were all lumped into the group – and the genus Cetotherium was another wastebasket in itself with at least 12 assigned species, many of which were based on fragmentary or dubious remains.
Tumblr media
Ciuciulea davidi
This was finally cleaned up in the 2000s, when a revision of the cetotheres cut the group down to just 6 genera. Since then a handful of additional new genera and species have been named, and while a few polyphyletic Cetotherium species may still need tidying up the cetotheres have overall gone from being a total taxonomic mess to actually being one of the best studied groups of fossil baleen whales.
Their exact evolutionary relationships with each other are still in flux, but the most surprising discovery from the improved understanding of these ancient whales is that they might not be extinct after all.
Tumblr media
A study in the early 2010s suggested that the pygmy right whale may actually be a living cetothere. This classification was initially controversial, but further discoveries of fossil relatives of this enigmatic modern whale and comparisons of their distinctive inner ear anatomy have provided stronger evidence for an evolutionary link.
At this point it seems fairly likely that the pygmy right whale really is either the last surviving representative of the cetothere lineage, or at least is a very close evolutionary "cousin" (a "cetotherioid") closer related to them than to any other modern baleen whales.

Happy Pride Month!
Three of your favorite Butterbeers (and my simself) are dressed in our pride flag colors! While other sims are certainly not always cis/het, these three are the ones where it’s really been a bigger part of their story.
Kneazle - trans and nonbinary, uses they/them pronouns; demisexual
Pygmy Puff - aromantic, bisexual
Ariana - pansexual
As for myself, I’m asexual and aromantic flux! When I do catch feelings, gender isn’t really a factor, but I don’t really label myself in that way. I use “gay” or “queer” instead as an umbrella term for myself.
You can read the Butterbeers’ story from the beginning here.

An interview with ORCA Alliance, the platform bridging traditional banking and crypto, CEO Natan Avidan
Today on the other side of conversation we have Natan Avidan, a 28-year old entrepreneur and the CEO of ORCA Alliance who is gathering a group of finance, IT and cryptocurrency specialists and developing an Open Banking application suited for the digital generation.
Disclosure: This is a Sponsored Article
ORCA is undergoing private testing phase of initial version of the platform entitled ORCA PYGMY. PYGMY is the base layer architecture of the final design currently equipped with auto-update portfolio tracking functions. Portfolio tracker is completely free and going to be publicly launched in days, later versions will require positive ORCA token wallet balance.
On the occasion of PYGMY launch and the ICO date announcement we invited Natan to talk about the ORCA project, running a crypto project and the market sentiment.
I: The first version of ORCA platform named PYGMY is coming out. What’s behind the name and how does it feel to run a crypto startup?
N: PYGMY is an actual type of orca species, the smallest one in size. We thought it fits the evolution narrative. Following versions are also named after orcas, the running platform will be the Killer Whale.
Answering the other part of the questions I can say that it’s definitely a ride. There’s a lot of flux in the space, lots of things happening at the same time so everyone must always be on their toes to react quickly. I am glad we are finally arriving at the first tangible milestone – PYGMY and we’re quite happy with the result.
I: So how is PYGMY useful? Why should people try it out?
N: PYGMY is the backbone of the platform. For now it’s a read-only version which functions perfectly as a portfolio tracker. The major idea behind it was to offer the crypto community an automated tool which allows to follow your crypto asset value across different exchanges. We want to free people from the need to manually apdate trades. It’s about bringing convenience. ICO investors will find this extremely useful as they are the people owning a bunch of digital coins across different platforms.
I: In the future ORCA platform will allow integration of people bank accounts. Why do think that’s going to be important for people?
N: It gives people the ability to start following their spending patterns, monthly income, savings and get advanced analytics on how are they doing financially. The platform does the number crunching and machine-learning algorithms gives personalized insight. Crypto users are individuals who tend to be interested in financial advancement, innovation and are sure to have multiple accounts. It’s a match!
For conventional, bank-related fiat banking people are used to having a limited number of open accounts, usually all of the same provider. In Europe, Open Banking is going to disrupt everything upside down and change consumer habits. Imagine having all your bank, crypto, leasing, insurance account and payment cards on the same tab. That’s where we’re going.
Soon enough, everyone will be able to feel the impact of fact-based financial decisions. We’re not creating a super formula to be always right, it’s about data analysis and data management.
I: What do you consider to be your target audience?
N: It’s people who are used to have everything at their hand’s reach and are accustomed to digital applications. Statistics say the majority of them are guys in 18-45 year range with some technological knowledge and drive for financial independence.
However that’s not enough. During these times you have to run as fast as you can to stay up date with how everything changes. So we are putting extra focus on delivering value and improving fiat-to-crypto-to-fiat transition. It’s important to make it easy so that everyone can start experimenting with it. That requires continuous forward thinking.
I: For the sake of the argument it could be said that all crypto users are tech geeks but not all tech geeks own crypto yet. What’s keeping the rest from joining the crowd?
N: Right now people have to dedicate some serious time to understand the technology, get familiarized with the terminology and try out a few services just to make the first contact. Deep understanding extends the learning curve exponentially. Not everyone has that luxury. Other barriers such as lacking infrastructure, limited use cases, scalability issues and incomplete technology development also contribute.
I: And how is ORCA overcoming those issues?
N: With PYGMY we are bringing a tool for crypto owners and ICO investors. Another solution we already presented is instant crypto-to-fiat transfers. It will solve a lot of liquidity issues for traders and hodlers. Once people start using it and see how easy it is, they’ll need no more convincing.
He have more plans how to bring even more efficiency and education for the environment. Stat tuned and you’ll find out for yourselves.
I: So what can people do to join ORCA?
N: Our ICO launches on August 6th, we have a limited number of seats available with 20% bonus so I encourage everyone interested, to get whitelisted in advance on ORCA website.
People who like our project idea can join to become ORCA contributors and early adopters.
Also, we invite people who actively manage diverse assets to take  PYGMY for a spin and be the first ones to do so.
We also have ORCA group on Telegram where people can engage with the team directly.
ORCA is building an open banking platform for personal finance management.
The platform built by European start-up places cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges next to traditional bank accounts for a convenient all-in-one display. Connecting user accounts via APIs gives real-time access to a whole range of financial services without compromising security. Every transaction on the platform has to be validated by ORCA tokens granting them a distinct token use-case. Advanced data analysis tools will derive personalized solutions tailored for every user.

Major Changes In the Works for SLS Las Vegas Restaurants
Following word of the sale of SLS Las Vegas to Alex Meruelo a few weeks ago, we surmised there would be major changes to the resort’s line-up of restaurants, and we were right.
While many of the plans are still in flux, all the restaurants at SLS are being scrutinized. It appears any restaurant with ties to former investor Sam Nazarian and his SBE Entertainment will be flipped to new concepts.
From what we hear, the new owner of SLS, Alex Meruelo, has strong opinions and likes having creative control of his various companies. This extends to what his restaurant offerings will be, and he has apparently already been very involved in selecting what dining options will ultimately stay or go at SLS.
As for the specifics of the restaurant changes, Umami Burger will go.
You can kiss these lips goodbye.
The vibe of the restaurant is likely to stay the same, though, as it dovetails nicely into the sports book bar vibe. There’s been some discussion with Buffalo Wild Wings to move into the space, but even if that deal doesn’t materialize, the venue is likely to remain a wing and burger restaurant.
The reliably unremarkable 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria will also go, becoming a restaurant with similar cuisine, La Pizza Loca.
Pizza is like sex. We prefer it with utensils.
La Pizza Loca is a chain in southern California. It’s owned by (wait for it) Meruelo Group. That should be a fairly seamless transition.
Cleo, our favorite restaurant at SLS Las Vegas (and possibly on the entire Strip), is, tragically, also not long for this world.
It’s believed the Mediterranean restaurant (again, licensed from SBE Entertainment) may soon become a Mexican restaurant, along the lines of Michoacan, a popular Las Vegas favorite.
Eating at Cleo is like sex. It’s actually better than sex, but when we tell people that, we get odd looks, so we’re sticking with that it’s like sex.
Sushi restaurant Katsuya, another SBE Entertainment-licensed joint, is also likely to go away as the ownership change approaches. Its replacement hasn’t been determined.
“Katsuya” is a Japanese words meaning, “Don’t look now, but your food involves suction cups. And possibly sex, just to keep these photo captions consistent.”
A big question mark is, of course, Bazaar Meat by Jose Andres. It’s regarded as the crown jewel of the SLS restaurant portfolio. We can’t share what’s in store for Bazaar Meat at the moment. All we can say is all the SBE-licensed restaurants are likely to end their run at SLS Las Vegas in the months to come.
Bazaar Meat is an SBE-licensed restaurant.
Bazaar Meat defies description, especially when we’re drunk.
Word has it there are no plans to re-open the space that was the former home of Ku Noodle. The restaurant has been walled off, and the typical visitor wouldn’t even know it ever existed.
Ku Noodle is camouflaged much like the a pygmy seahorse resting upon Malaysian red coral. What, you thought we were kidding about the drunk thing?
The one restaurant that isn’t going anywhere is the resort’s 24-hour restaurant, Northside Cafe. Northside Cafe is managed in-house after a partnership with The Griddle Cafe and its owner Jodi Hortze ended with lots of drama nobody ever talks about.
No need for the flop sweat, Northside. You’re safe.
That’s all we know at the moment.
If you read this blog on a regular basis (and why would you?), you know better than to form emotional attachments to anything in Las Vegas. The sole exception is Cleo, of course.
The bottom line: We recommend you hit Cleo and Bazaar Meat at SLS Las Vegas while you can.
Update (6/19/17): An alert reader passes along that Aria is surveying guests about their familiarity with Jose Andres (Bazaar Meat). The tipster suggests the possibility Bazaar Meat could move to barMASA, a Japanese venue which previously set two closing dates.
