I can't fanthom to explain you in full how much of a significant moment this is in animation
Tumblr media
You don't show blood in animated films, it's like almost a taboo thing. You can show characters getting beat up and bruised but never bleeding. It defies all corporate beliefs of making it a "kids movie". Even GDT's Pinocchio which has fucking nazis in it and guns shooting people never showed blood in it. It's just that sacred of a thing in animation that studios never cross.
But Puss in Boots, they showed it. Not only that, you get a fucking close up on it. Do you know how rare that is? The people who made it probably fought every tooth and nail to get this moment approved, because this is unprecedented in this industry. You don't show actual blood bleeding I cant stress how much this is such a nono in this industry.
But for this moment it's perfect, the inevitability of death in Puss in Boot's eyes, the amount of risk the studio took to get this moment in the film approved, shows how much DreamWorks really cares and wants this movie to not just be another haha kids film but for the adults watching it, the people who have seen the world and fear death, those with anxiety, get panic attacks, unsure about life the universe, getting married, being a family. These aren't ideas catered to kids.
Everytime I've seen people be like "oh studios need to stop making boring ass animations and actually make a film about serious topics and have better animation and care about the movie" THIS IS IT FOLKS. A STUDIO LISTENED AND IT'S OUT HERE IN YOUR FACE.
So seriously go watch Puss in Boots. It's incredible and you're missing out on something beautiful if you don't.

I hope no one’s done this yet lmao
Death says he was there for every one of Puss’ deaths. For someone who’s not a ‘cat person’, that’s gotta be a bit frustrating
(I only drew in El Lobo; the rest of the art is in the movie, by Dreamworks)

Tiny details I love about the Last Wish
Tumblr media
WARNING: *spoilers ahead*
No one has talked about this before,
but let me just say...
I just love the fact that Goldi was still not on first-name terms with Puss and Kitty, even at the end of the movie. (Not sure about the other way around, but there is probably no such thing as a family name for Goldi and bears? XD)
For Goldi, it's always been Softpaws, this cat and Boots, and Puss in Boots.
How one addresses another is not merely about manners, it's about intimacy and closeness.
At the very beginning, Puss and Kitty were sort of hired by Goldi to steal the map (or probably assassinate Jack Horner). However, being Puss and Kitty, they certainly have their own ideas of the map. So what began as an employer-employee relationship soon exploded into an enemy (Goldi)-friend (between Puss and Kitty) relation... until the epic battle for the wishing star.
Something has changed ever since baby (bear) was blasted away and Goldi abandoned her wish and came back to save him. It was a moment that Goldi and her bear family realized that Puss/Kitty/Perrito - despite their thirst for the map - were never really ill-intentioned. They were just a bunch of guys who would have the map, and walk away coolly. Not like Jack Horner, who wanted nothing more than the ultimate destruction of the entire world, and had certainly been merciless and cruel throughout. And the bear family did have a taste of that before, after being hit in the head by the Sword in the Stone during their first ever encounter.
So perhaps it's that realization, or perhaps seeing Puss and Kitty both seriously challenged by the same enemy they faced moments ago really hit them, Goldi (aka the bear family) and Puss/Kitty had not only agreed to a temporary truce, but also became strong allies. Helping both cats to perform the Spanish Splinter, and tearing up the map together.
Even at the very end of the movie, Goldi and Puss/Kitty/Perrito were still not that close. They are more of friends who hold mutual respect than those who stay intimately close.
Calling each other by family names just proves that.
(PS, I love how Miss Pugh pronounced "Softpaws", it's almost musical :D)

It’s funny to imagine that after Death allowed Puss to keep his final life and he walked out of the wishing star’s force field that he’s just waiting right outside the star because he knows that Jack’s about to die and he doesn’t want to travel too far.

Ive seen some people get mixed up (also sorry if this comes off pompous I swear I'm not I just really fuckin enjoy these movies ghggb) so I'd like to clarify that the Big Bad Wolf is an already established character in the Shrek world.
Tumblr media
And he's just some guy. He also might transform into a human woman with a strong accent when there's a full moon according to a halloween special but ya know.
The wolf that chases Puss in Last Wish tho is, Death, straight up, as he said.
Tumblr media
Some promotional media did advertise him as the double b wolf but that was just to not spoil the surprise. (Apparently some promos would also just call him The Wolf so yeup.)
However, it's also not unreasonable to mix up the 2 since in Shrek's ogreverse (ogre universe I NEED to coin the phrase c'mon now) there's been a few number of soft rebooted characters from a lot of Shrek media.
But to go off strictly from the movies, the 2 most obvious examples are Rumpelstiltskin and the 3 bears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left depictions are really just one-off jokes/background characters that rarely appeared in more than 5 scenes from previous movies (Shrek 3 and 1 respectively), while the right depictions are the later focused antagonists that got plenty of screen time (Shrek 4ever after and Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish respectively).
The difference tho is that the original depictions are really Just one-off jokes. Nothing more than just something in the background. The Big Bad Wolf however is an already established part of Shrek's friend group alongside the 3 little pigs, Pinocchio and Gingy.
Basically, not someone they could just easily make a soft reboot about like with the aforementioned 2 examples.
It is incredibly likely tho that DreamWorks did base Death a bit off of the real life folklore of the Big Bad Wolf. Considering how much they love old tales, and how much old stories had him as the main antagonist. (Plus c'mon. Wolf from Bad Guys literally says he's the big bad in every story, they're definitely self aware at this point.)
Having the penultimate depiction of the end of life itself in their fairytale inspired long-running world be loosely based on the most popular antagonist from old folklore stories is most likely on purpose, and I gotta say, based.
It's also likely that Death can take whatever form he chooses. But I'm cool with gnarly wolf form. 👍

Okay y’all. Let’s talk “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” When I tell y’all Death the mf Wolf had me shook 👏🏾EVERY 👏🏾 TIME 👏🏾 HE 👏🏾HIT👏🏾 THE 👏🏾 SCREEN, I mean it! Dude had me sweating and scared for Puss, okay?! Had our favorite Tabby Thief hanging on to his last life by a thread weaved by anxiety, PTSD, and one panic attack that I thought for sure was gonna send him into cardiac arrest!😭 Next, him and KIIIIITTTTYYYYY!!!! I can’t believe he left her at the altar! And after all that game he was spittin back in the first movie, he goes and does that?!😒🤦🏾‍♀️ Like, if you wanted to elope, why not just say that?! Then, sweet Perrito! He had no business being so adorable and so tragic! No business and no right, gotdang it! Lastly, all of this is happening on top of being chased by Goldi and her gang of grizzlies and a Pimple-headed Pie Dude who is also in the business of stealing magical artifacts! While there is a lot going on and a lot of characters moving the plot forward, they, and what they symbolize, are folded in quite smoothly.

Jack Horner is said to be 100% awful and a bad person. But there is one good quality I definitely see in him, no joke: the fact that he simply states the truth and doesn’t excuse himself.

As a personal headcanon, I don’t think that El Lobo de la Muerte is cruel to the average person.
His sadist streak tends to surface when someone attempts to cheat death or fail to appreciate their own life whilst not fearing/respecting death. And for someone whose main existence requires a sort of tact when bringing souls to the afterlife, the need to Hunt settles into a very exciting Primal urge that El Lobo doesn’t typically get to follow.
While he’s definitely not cuddly or fuzzy, I like to think that El Lobo does have a gentler nature to those who need it.

something I love about Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is that they don't have the bears talk until they get to Mama Luna's house
the initial thoughts I had were "damn don't mess with these guys...also how the frick is Goldilocks with the bears that's pretty cool like did she train them or something"
then they're shown as a loving family that adopted her and they have amazing banter and character development over the course of the story
