On Feb. 25, 1964, Cassius Clay became the world heavyweight boxing champion when he defeated Sonny Liston in a monumental upset. The braggadocios fighter, who later became known as Muhammad Ali, reacted gleefully after he was declared the champion on a seventh round TKO against the favorite Liston at Convention Hall in Miami Beach, Fla. BROTHER BILL
1915
Tumblr media
Brother Bill (originally titled Home Again) is a three-act play by Thomas Louden. It was originally produced by George M. Cohan and Maynard Waite starring James J. Corbett.
Tumblr media
James J. Corbett (1866-1933)  was a professional boxer and a World Heavyweight Champion, best known as the only man who ever defeated the great John L. Sullivan. Corbett was one of the first athletes whose showmanship in and out of the ring was just as good as his boxing abilities. He was also arguably the first sports sex symbol of the modern era. After retiring from the ring, Corbett acted on stage and in films, also touring the world talking about his famous fight with Sullivan. He was dubbed ‘Gentleman Jim’, which was also the title of a 1942 film of his life starring Errol Flynn.
The play is set in a small English town where American customs and aggressiveness have confronted old English traditions. As the play opens, William Barron revisits the home of his wealthy and aristocratic parents after being in the United States for a dozen years. There he acquired the title of pugilistic champion of the world. His disregard of proper dress and other English conventions earn him a chilly reception from his pompous father and two brothers. Their dislike turns to disdain when they learn of his title. When William befriends Norah Malloy, the Barron family governess, the hypocritical family assume he has nefarious intentions and discharge the governess and order William to leave the house.  When he learns that his brother John is candidate for Parliament on the Conservative ticket, William stands for the same office in the opposing party. To get elected, William enlists the help of innkeeper Tim Mooney, who is a fan of the pugilist.
In rehearsals, producer Cohan both changed the play’s name and cut the boxing scene, which frustrated and angered Corbett. He and Cohen argued about it, but Corbett agreed to open the play and let the audience decide.

Brother Bill opened in Atlantic City at the Cort Theatre on August 30, 1915. For this engagement, the Cort retained a full orchestra to perform entr’acte music from their recent production of Princess Pat.
The play integrated motion picture technology in telling the story.

About the Venue: The Cort Theatre at South Carolina Avenue and the Boardwalk, opened in 1907 as the Savoy Theatre with 1,500 seats. It was also briefly known as the Woods Theatre after producer / theatre manager A.H. Woods. Although no longer in existence, the year that it was closed is disputed.
“There are some obvious faults in the construction of ‘Brother Bill,’ which will require some ‘whipping’ before the play becomes a Broadway success. In the first act, there is a tendency to make the speeches somewhat too full, which hampers the action of the story. With careful pruning here and the injection of a little more crisp dialogue, there should be added more interest and speed.” ~ VICTOR MOORE
“It is a play that appeals to the sentimentally inclined and will doubtless have some success in the popular-priced theatres. The company surrounding the star is of ordinary worth.” ~ PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

Two weeks became four and four became eight. Brother Bill was permanently down for the count. TKO.

Boxing Day 2022
Today is Boxing Day in much of the British Commonwealth. It is usually customary for us to do a pugilistic post on this day, but since the library is closed today and we do not have access to our physical collections, we are turning instead to our digitized collection of Milwaukee’s ultra-radical underground newspaper of the late 1960s/ealry 1970s, Kaleidoscope, for their irreverant take on this holiday season.
Kaleidoscope was published in Milwaukee from October 6, 1967 to November 11, 1971. The newspaper was so radical and irreverant that its editor John Kois was convicted of obscenity. The case was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in Kois’s favor, although by that time the newspaper was already out of business. In Kois v. Wisconsin, Justice William O. Douglas wrote that “the vague umbrella of obscenity laws was used in an attempt to run a radical newspaper out of business . . . . If obscenity laws continue in this uneven and uncertain enforcement, then the vehicle has been found for the suppression of any unpopular tract.”
The newspaper is still considered so radical, however, that we felt compelled to offer this disclaimer to the digital collection: “Please be advised that this digital version of Kaleidoscope may contain images, language, and themes that may be offensive to some viewers. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries does not endorse the content of these items. However, they present an aspect of the cultural record which we deem worthy of preserving and presenting.”
So, for its rather pugilistic stance on most every issue of its day, we offer these pages from Kaleidoscope for Boxing Day 2022 (yes, yes, we know it’s not that kind of boxing!) You may review the full digitized collection of Kaleidoscope here, or you can come to UWM Special Collections to review the original newspaper for yourself.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Ever felt so mad that you could hit someone? Most certainly but hitting other people without warning is wrong so we don’t and/or shouldn’t do it. That’s why we have punching bags to lay into. Now you can let out all your aggression while only hurting your hand. I’d say that counts as wonderful. BONUS WONDERFUL!!!: This post was originally going to be about inflatable hammers which are fun and colorful but really should be handled by small children and internet idiots. Still wonderful though.

The phosphorus white glare of stage lights flooded his eyes, blinking softened the rays reveal he was on his back, looking up at the wooden beams of the community hall ceiling. The boxer propped himself up on his elbows and into a sit, each move laborious and slow. The ringing in his ears subsided a little and the silence around him settled heavily on his shoulders. Beneath the sheet of canvas tattoed with beer mascots and bookkeepers numbers, the wooden decks of the ring biting at his backside moved him to rise. Trash was littered all around the stage. Parting gifts hailed by a unamused audience. If only he’d risen then and not now, then they’d be pelting the other sap, he chasisted himself, kicking out a crushed beer can that skittered away under the ropes. Would that I’d stood up before. Limping over to a rope of braided twine he noticed a shadow moving at the back of the deserted hall and became aware of wet smacking noise he made with his mop. The loser spat, thick and foamy with blood, before shouting out,
“I take it I didn’t win then?
He felt each word in his tenderised jaw but still followed the words with a dopey smile.
The cleaner stopped flailing his mop and turned to look at the ring and the tiny trembling figure which could hardly support itself.
“Your trainer, and that manager. They should have waited for you, no?” he called back, anticipating the skinny creature would collapse sooner than reply.
Instead the boxer managed to shrug and slide under the ropes and onto the floor. They should have bloody well waited, he mused only once he was out of sight in the musky sanctum of the locker room.
Fully dressed with a cigarette dangling from broken lips he humped it out onto the street in search of a taxi. Nothing hurt badly enough. Not just yet for him to forget, that for a moment, he’d heard the crowd and been invited glimpse the cosmos reserved for pugilists.

The last short I posted here was a short exercise in world-building so this time I decided to take a crack at a developing character in a single scene.
