first album review!!

Creeper-Sanguivore

A few days ago, I was reading the most recent issue of Metal Hammer when I came across an interview with a band called Creeper. After I read the interview, I decided that i simply had to listen to this album. Let me just say before I begin talking about my personal highlights from this album, I was truly not disappointed. The opener, Further Than Forever, is a 9-minute roller coaster that constantly defied my expectations, and got me truly excited to see what this album had in store for me. Creeper does an amazing job of telling stories in their songs, while somehow still keeping me interested. I think this is best shown in The Ballad of Spook & Mercy, which was slow, but had me swinging back and forth. I only wish this song was longer, and had more story to listen to! Of course, if your only gripe with a song is that there isn’t enough of it, you’ve got a damn good time. Another highlight for me was Teenage Sacrifice, which has my favorite riff of the album. Lastly, Black Heaven is a perfectly dark and theatrical song that I thoroughly enjoyed. In conclusion, I am truly glad I found this band, and I will most certainly be listening to more music from them in the future. 9/10

Electric Callboy-TEKKNO

I have never heard anything like TEKKNO. Its high energy combination of electro and metalcore have me stuck between jumping up and down and headbanging. It has a great opener, Pump It, that got me hooked easily and excited for the rest of the album. It was then followed up by We Got The Moves, which has an incredibly fun chorus that just has me smiling. The song after, FUCKBOI has a great feature from Conquer Divide. Probably my favorite, Spaceman, comes afterwards, which is yet another high energy chorus contrasted by an unexpected but welcome FiNCH rap feature. Another favorite of mine, Arrow of Love has lovely and happy lyrics screamed, which is great and makes it one of the best to dance to. The final song I’ll talk about is Hurrikan, which is sung mostly in German, and is a fun little eurodance song that is yet another great song to dance to. That is, until it completely changes into a death metal song about being deeply in love someone, which was a surprise, but I was definitely happy with the change. All in all TEKKNO was a great time, with almost all bangers, but a couple songs that were pretty forgettable. I can’t wait to hear more from Electric Callboy! 8/10

Poppy-Zig

This is a very interesting album. In a good way. It opens with the pulsing Church Outfit, which is probably the song i keep coming back to the most. It’s followed up by Knockoff, which very much belongs on a runway in my opinion. I absolutely adore this song because of its pulsing bass. I also very much enjoyed Hard, which has Poppy’s singing contrasted well by her screaming in the latter half of the song. Unfortunately, quite a bit of this album is forgettable, but I will definitely be looking into more Poppy in the future! 7/10

im not a big fan of this new poppy album. the album sounds barely polished, and there are some songs that are kind of annoying. most of the greater songs comes at the end of the album. the album could’ve been better.

best track: the attic - its loud and it makes me wanna cry (in a good way).

tracks that i rec listening: church outfit, flicker, 1s + 0s, linger, motorbike, prove it.

worst track: hard - its loud and it makes me wanna cry (in a BAD way).

overall score 5/10 - this is all opinion so pls no hate

Needless to say, Poppy goes kinda hard on her latest single. 

Harking back to the industrial screamo of earlier releases, the singer toys with the masculine/feminine dichotomy as she conceals herself behind a tough exterior. But as the track builds to a vicious crescendo, her frustrations reach a fever pitch the more her façade falls apart (‘No spine, no right, no love, no dice/I always pay the price’). Yet strangely, at the same time, Poppy derives pleasure from this menacing show of strength, seemingly mocking the false machismo of her enemies. 

Says Poppy about the creative process behind ‘Hard’ (via Genius) 

'When it was written initially, we completely changed all the lyrics for it because I liked the track and the melodies. 

‘I liked what it was making me feel but I didn’t like any of the lyrics and they were actually pretty x-rated. I wrote that song that was a final song for Zig and then I deemed it done.  

‘To me, it’s a song about strength. I’ve loved getting to play it on tour because the album isn’t out yet. To see the response from the audience when the record hasn’t yet been released and you see them react to certain songs… It’s a good feeling. It’s like, ‘Oh, you understand and you like it.’
