#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wen qing#wen ning#jiang cheng#wei wuxian#In the audio drama she quite literally opens the door and then leaves after seeing them without breaking conversation.#It is both so impressive and deeply funny to me.#I imagine her just literally pivoting in one foot and walking right out.#She came home after a long day at work and in 0.5 seconds went “I would rather go back to the office than deal with this right now”.#Besides tickling me to near tears - this scene is also a great introduction to Wen Qing - her first instinct is to protect!#She lives by the code of 'I don't care who you are - if you need help I will lend it.' a true doctor and professional.#Sure she is *mad* that Wen Ning puts himself (and her to a lesser extent) at risk by helping 'the enemy' but she gives in quick.#I love Wen Qing a lot - she is such an unsung hero in this story.#Sorry that her first appearance on this blog was...what it was. I'll let your curiosity take you down that path...

a surreal Sri Lankan fantasy about colonialism, revolution, mixing fantasy with the modern world
follows a man raised by his mother to kill his father, a god-like cult leader
but as an adult he puts aside his life of violence and moves to the city for a quiet life
he becomes fascinated with ‘bright doors’ around the city that never open and have no other side, and joins a group studying them to find out more
and a support group for those with divine heritage that becomes increasingly revolutionary, until the task he was made for reemerges and his life upends
#the Saint of Bright Doors#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this is kind of hard to explain I dont know if I did a very good job here lol#it is weird and full of so many interesting elements. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it but?? I really liked it mostly???#It starts pretty small scale focused on the MC & slowly unravels the wider worldbuilding and narrative elements in a really interesting way#The first chapter or two I assumed it was typical high fantasy but then it’s like. oh this is a modern city. with emails and stuff.#The pacing is a bit weird - it’s quite meandering and also pivots significantly in the second half. tbh I’m still ????? about the ending lm#but also I am happy to float through on vibes.#and there’s some elements (like the doors that become….not that relevant) that I want to know more about. (as an aside - I saw someone say#that it’s a very clear retelling about Buddha’s son? which idk enough about but probably could give a deeper context to a lot of it)#writing style is kinda detached from the MC but also there is a reason for this that makes sense with the twist near the end!#which is a kind of twist i LOVE. Maybe I wish it had been emphasised a bit more over the story though? unsure.#I thought his mother's story was interesting also - you think she's an terrible parent just there for background context at the start but#then when she tells her story it's like ohh there's more context here.#also I hesitate to just say ‘if you like the spear cuts-- you should read this’ because I think the elements that are similar are done in a#kinda different way and might disappoint you if you’re expecting it to be the same as spear….but regardless the sort of dreamy writing#rich world; narrative with fantasy but also modern day elements; some of the writing style; mlm MC (tho not a romance)#idk. it will definitely not work for everyone but I enjoyed it overall#also it is full of queerness#bisexual books

when liam’s parents divorce, her mother gets to keep the farm, and emmett and liam are raised there together
as time passes, their mother can no longer take care of the farm and emmett takes over. there he works happily to take care of the land and the animals. the barn also acts a little bit of a makeshift base for roxy and liam during their vigilante work.
this is one of the only verses in which liam returns home, and emmett doesn’t come to live with them.

the two start to reconnect right in the middle of liam’s first season with richmond. the spotlight helps to revive the interest in talking and emmett is so full of pride that he reaches out
he watches nearly every match that he can, and he and his dad are big fans
emmett has a much more subtle passion for the sport, but played soccer in high school because he thought it might bring liam around or back into his life
emmett went with liam to their first fifa u20 cup and got to walk with them during their last game as a player mascot
he goes to live with liam at the end of the first season that they play and gets into a university in england which gives him the right to stay longer in the country.

emmett starts attending college around the time liam starts with the 118. he lives on campus but the two still try to spend as much time together as possible, reconnecting and growing close. liam occasionally crashes in his dorm during the time after they lose their apartment
emmett is in college during this time (he’s studying physiology to become a physical therapist) and as a result of needing to commute he quite frequently drops liam off and picks them up after shifts. he needs the car a little more than them to get around usually
he obviously worries about liam, but also knows it’s not something he can dwell on at all or it will only drive him insane. he believes in liam a lot and is a frequent cheerleader, especially when they get promoted
he knows everyone from obvious interactions and drop offs, but also just hears nearly everything from liam. he will pretend he knows absolutely nothing though on first meeting, and will continue to act surprised by any news shared with him even if liam has told it to him beforehand. he’s really good at that
he quite adores all the fire-kids and relatives, and is happy to help out with any drop offs, pick ups, or anything else that’s needed as he can
musician : color crescendo
emmett is a small concert photographer and is often hanging around the music scene. he loves photographing concerts and shows for the absolute magical moments that he’s able to capture
liam takes him on tour for their second album as their own photographer which prompts the two of them to reconnect more and ultimately decide to move in together
liam’s song brother is about emmett, and he cannot listen to it live without feeling like he’s been hit by a tidal wave
eventually he starts to move into video a bit and does a couple music videos for liam and the musicians that they know

Fuck it I’m about to add historical costume consultant to my resume
#this man#how are you asking to borrow costumes with less than a week’s notice#and he said he’s asking us because he wants to “’get it right for the period’#when the earliest year we interpret is quite literally 40 years after the play is set#like this AD did not even do a cursory google search for “’what did women wear in 1850’#or what year our house was built#or even look at the promotional material from the original production of the play#and like? who is doing your costumes?#I get this is just for a promo shoot and you don’t have costumes for the performance yet#but surely whoever the costume designer is could have at least googled what you’re going for????#this is driving me insane#and also the exact reason I pivoted from working in theatre to working in living museums and living history#if you have the internet to email me these dumbass questions you can google what the fuck Harriet Tubman would’ve worn#(the play is about Harriet Tubman)#they also originally wanted to produce it on our site which#a) we don’t have an actual theatre it’s a lecture hall with the worst imaginable lighting#and b) our guy wasn’t even actually an abolitionist so to perform that here would be giving him too much credit#and c) the historic house next door was owned by an actual abolitionist and anti racist and equal rights activist#there’s just so much to unpack here#museum musings#tales from the servant’s wing

#i am. in crisis.#i was dead set on a PhD until very recently when i hard pivoted in PsyD options but now im reevaluating#and idk if im ready to close the door on academia#the problem with that is that PsyDs are much easier to get into#i could feasibly get into one out of undergrad#with a PhD i just… don’t have the research experience. it would take me a while after graduation to build that up#and i only have 2 years of visa extension before i have to go back to dubai where psych research is ????#i don’t know if im good enough for a PhD…#and when i decided to do a PsyD it was like i could breathe again bc it’s so much more believable#that i could make it#and now that im reconsidering it’s like… i have to choose to step back into that fear and uncertainty#i left it behind and now i have to choose to return to it#and im scared im legitimately scared#i don’t want to apply to anything this year i just want to work for a while and then decide what i want#i don’t even want to think about having this conversation with my parents….
