New York Fashion Week Ones to Watch: AREA

AREA was founded in 2014 by Piotrek Panszczyk and Beckett Fogg who met while studying at Parsons. Fogg, from Kentucky had previously worked at Calvin Klein Collection, and Panszczyk, born in Poland and raised in the Netherlands, had worked at Chloé.

The brand shares its name and ethos with the Manhattan nightclub that ran from 1983 to 1987 in Hudson Street, seeing celebrities such as Grace Jones and Andy Warhol visit for its nights that fused art and performance.

Couture Fruits and Fruit Flies at AREA Things looked like they were gonna get fruity the moment AREA's show invites arrived: two rubber bananas with branded stickers in a black container.Sure enough, upon entering the show, artificial fruit flies were scattered all over the walls and ceiling. And the first look wasted no time either: a top, necklace, and skirt made of 3D bananas out of ombre velvet and finished the with sculpted 24K gold cap tips.Related | AREA Goes Punk Fetish for Its Return to the RunwayOther looks included couture watermelon dresses cut into slices, silk jersey pleated into flat banana panels and connected by gold faceted caps, plunging halter dresses made from yellow crystal banana beading with decaying brown spots and crystal grape vine collars. The fruit flies were also turned into couture jewelry (some were placed on models' lips) and as embellishments on a sculptural black wool silk tuxedo. SIMONE BILES at the 2021 Met Gala on September 13th 2021 designed by BECKETT FOGG and PIOTREK PANSZCZYK of AREA

The inspiration for this outfit was showgirls, particularly Josephine Baker.

I love that Simone was invited to the Met Gala! I think she looked great. I love the leotard under the dress. I think it’s my favorite part of the outfit. The pretty stones are just a super cool. I like the silver dress. It reminds me of clouds! If you saw any videos you could see it was also super heavy. Even super strong Simone needed other people to lift her dress so she could more. However, I thought the dress mostly looked great! There were a few angles where I thought it looked kinda unflattering.

Area Couture - Spring 2021 Collection

After Mairead asked us to pick two collections that we love this one came immediately to my mind. When I watched the video of the collection (link below) I was absolutely intrigued and in awe of the garments and the whole setting. From the detail in the pieces to the models and to the make up I was amazed. I found the designs really unusual but there was something about them I found so beautiful. There is clearly effort, thought and love that went into these pieces and that is why I admire them so much.

AREA 2019 Ready to wear Collection-

“Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk aren’t afraid to give you full-on fun, unapologetic fashion with a capital F. Their fall show was highly eccentric, ultra feminine, sexy and, at times, quirky and weird. These aren’t new elements to Area, but this was, or at least it appeared to be, the first time the designers fully embraced their eclectic glory. It was, by far, their most wide-ranging and versatile collection to date.”

Again, I loved this collection because of its extravagant quirkiness and detail. I appreciate the use of colours and the immersive details in the designs.
