I am so glad about Del Toro’s win, and his inspiring words regarding animation and its place in film. The last year was difficult for animation fans and workers alike, and this major W from this year’s Oscars gives me a glimmer of hope that this medium will get more respect and attention it deserves. Despite the cancellations, mergers, and relentless live action remakes, I still have hope for animation to endure as an art form.

I love when kids are portrayed as ACTUAL KIDS! With their fears and foolishness, with their jealousy and ingenuity, with their absurd logic and unfiltered bravery. And frick, these two interacting reminded me of what I still want to draw for children's books AAAAAA.

oh wow, fanart??

a concept sketch of 17yo Candlewick??

In my head he survived the bombings at the camp. It's hard to survive a war but it was possible. I researched a bit on child soldier in Italy during ww2, and the stuff I found was heartbreaking - but essentially the film didn’t shy away from the fact that yeah, there were a lot of kids in Candlewick's position. Exploited by war and used as weapons for the fascist regime.

In my eyes Candlewick lived and went to become a staunch anti fascist. He and the other child soldiers basically went scrounging to survive, killing adult soldiers along the way. Eventually at his teens he would return home near the end of the war in spring of 1945 to his mother. Then days later he would find Pinocchio and they'd reunite.

Here in this sketch he's smiling, enjoying the semblance of peace he can get. Pinocchio’s probably telling a story of how he terrorized the priest with Spazzatura.

(I say 17 because the film takes place in 1938 Italy so that means he'd be born 1928... making him 17 by the time the war ends)
