[ID: A tweet by Guillermo del Toro that reads, "One significant step on Pinocchio (2022) is that we credit the animators right up front alongside the cast members- because they are. And we are touring w the puppets and Georgina Hayns to showcase the artistry that allows that performance.". Below the tweet is an edited picture of Gordon Ramsay with text over it that says, "delicious. Finally, some good fucking respect for animators."]
If there is one thing i believe people don’t give Into The Spiderverse and Across The Spiderverse enough credit for is bringing back the idea of making animated movies and series that aren’t specifically made for kids but they aren’t adult animation neither.
You know, animation for young adults or teenagers. An demographic that has been left forgotten for years, if not decades, and it started being considered again recently.
Some examples of this are films like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Wendell and Wild. Animated films that are in an grey area between ¨kids animation¨ and ¨adult animation¨.
Which, to be honest, is good thing! Because it means that people don’t have to jump into something completely different if they want to see animated movies that go a bit darker without having to jump into gore and repetitive sex jokes territory.
And who knows, maybe these types of movies could inspire future animated shows/movies for adults to change the way their stories are written seeing how you can tackle themes in a way that is interesting and compelling for the audience who watches them.
Just watched Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio on Netflix and Sebastian was definitely my favorite character, though he did remind me of another certain blue anthro bug that has traveled a lot in his life time...
Dean Deblois to Cate Blanchett: I have this character... a wild woman who has been living with dragons for 20 years... tall and elegant, wise and poised, who reunites with her son and husband in the midst of a war.
Guillermo del Toro to Cate Blanchett: Hey, wanna play a monkey?
