goooood i spent like three hours at work today just thinking about the implications of apocalymon and i think i am legit just gonna have to write out a whole articulated paper about them at this point
i was trying to focus on listening to essays but nah man
i'm gonna read so hard into those plural pronouns (/hj)
#sky talks#digimon#digimon adventure#but actually i was thinking about a conversation i had last night that reminded me of an old project i'd looked at#specifically trying to investigate the different villains of the series#like the Big Bads of arcs#(devi / ete / myotis / dark masters)#in the context of the crests#i was reminded of pinnochimon's seemingly pointed parallels to yamato's struggle with the crest of friendship#and to what degree the different big bads actually reflect apocalymon's state of being i'm unsure#i think it's left a little unclear in the text (even in the sub)#i'll go back and scrub quotes if i write anything more formal in terms of analysis but like#if we're to see the dark masters as manifestations of apocalymon's collective feelings#both as being their own characters motivated by different things#and *as* those extensions of apocalymon#there are a few questions we also have to ask#1: by explicitly calling to mind devimon's attacks do we assume that to some degree the other Big Bads were extensions of apocalymon?#(ie: not just enabled by the distortions caused by apocalymon's existence but sourcing code from them)#2: can we use the other villains to read more depth into apocalymon?#even if point 1 doesn't hold true#i think the dark masters are meant to highlight lacking within apocalymon as this personification of digital obsolescence/extinction/entrop#the only one of the DMs i don't have a good read on is metalseadramon tbh#that serpent's really got evil himbo energy#but pinnochimon like i said seems to mirror yamato's crest#and by extension apocalymon's stated root of grievance in their lonely misery#machinedramon seems most concerned with control of the world around him#in a way very different his fellow DMs#and while i'm still baking the pie on piemon#out of the DMs he really seems to express the most sadism#and i do have thoughts about that re: this topic

Do you think vamdemon was evil after he hatched from his digi egg? I was just wondering. As he’s one of the biggest creeps of the whole anime franchise.
I haven't generally thought too much about the rebirth mechanics in the Adventure universe, but my impression of what happens when the villainous Digimon are reborn is that, since they'll be stuck as babies for the time being, it's more than enough time for Elecmon and the other surrounding Digimon in the play yard to stage an intervention before they start plotting world domination again. Maybe Pinnochimon can have friends this time.

Digimon Adventure (Manga) - Vol. 4
(I wasn't able to find any high-quality images of this one).
More so-so digimon manga adaptation action. It might just be that I've gotten used to it, but I think the artwork has improved somewhat in this volume. I feel like some of the mega-level digimon are especially well drawn (the artist excels at the robotic looking mons) and the title pages are fun to look at. Only one more volume to go!
Ch. 22
-In this chapter Kari decides to just randomly grab a wild animal (Gatomon) and bring it home with her. Seriously, she doesn't know Gatomon is her partner digimon so why is that her instinct? Guess she's the type to bring stray animals home...
-Gatomon's reaction to the hug was pretty cute ("this attack is...unsettling.")
Ch. 23
-Once again, Kari is hella nonchalant about digimon showing up outta the blue, this time it's Wizardmon on her balcony.
-I think the manga is capturing the emotional beats of the Wizardmon and Gatomon storyline decently, but Gotsumon and Pumpkinmon had zero impact. They were introduced and killed off in the span of 8 pages and had one line of dialogue. If you weren't familiar with the episode they would have seemed incredibly random lol
-I noticed that Gatomon isn't making an annoying catnip/kitty litter/tuna joke every two seconds, so that's a step up from the anime dub.
Ch. 24
-Vamdemon starts rounding up the kids on...Earth? The real world? What am I supposed to call the non-digital world?
-A lot of stupid (but fun) lines thrown into this chapter. TK sees Wizardmon floating around in the ocean and shouts "hey look, free hat!" I wonder if the original Chinese also had a goofy tone?
Ch. 25
-Angewomon slays as always. I think she might be peak digimon design (at least as far as humanoid digimon go). Those who cosplay her must feel so powerful.
-With all the angels vs. demons action in this series, I wonder what those christian moms who banned Pokemon thought about Digimon back in the 90s? They probably just didn't know what it was or lumped it in with Pokemon. It just seems like the vaguely religious themes might have gotten their attention. (Does Pokemon even have demonic/angelic mons?)
Ch. 26
-The adults are all shown with vampire bites in their necks and they're under Vamdemon's hypnosis. I guess it doesn't work like other vampires though because they're completely fine once VenomVamdemon is defeated? I'm just used to vampire bites having more permanent effects, but he's a digimon so ~anything goes~
-They had to throw in all these lame "no homo" lines when Tai and Matt hold hands. Ohhh toxic masculinity :P
Ch. 27
-I kind of forgot all about Chuumon. When Chuumon is first introduced in the anime they make it seem like they're inseparable from Sukamon, but here we get a rare, solo Chuumon appearance. Sukamon, on the other hand, always shows up solo in the video games. I don't think I've seen a Chuumon in any of the 6 digimon games I've played so far. An underutilized, early franchise mon.
-I tried to see if I could name all 4 dark masters before they revealed them, but I could only remember Pinnochimon and Piedmon. The robo dark masters (MetalSeadramon and Machinedramon) are just forgettable to me. They look cool and that's about it.
Ch. 28
-Damn, the Whamon and MetalSeadramon deaths were a lot more hardcore than I remember. Whamon basically gets lasered through the head and MetalSeadramon gets shredded to pieces by WarGreymon. I can respect the lack of censorship.
-I liked this chapter because it was paced like a normal Digimon episode instead of shoving 5 plots into one. Hopefully we get more of this slower pace in the final volume.

Full confession: Puppetmon and Impmon are two of my all time favorites, friendless troublemakers. I always hated seeing characters like that lashing out, out of loneliness because it only made me want to hug and care for them more. Because I know all too well what it's like to be lonely and friendless.

When I google stuff for my digimon reviews now I keep coming across an anonymous person who keeps making the exact same complaints about my digimon reviews. Dude, I’ve given good reviews to dozens of humanoid digimon and when I say Pinnochimon is “one of those modern style designs” I mean that despite being older, he’s the kind of complicated humanoid design the series came to favor. I also still gave him a 5/5 because he’s one of my favorites so like, chill, man, he’s a piece of wood in a anime

~Digimon Adventure Novelization Excerpts Part Four~
Tumblr media
^Man, Takeru is really good at assisting with character development. Like, comforting Sora when she was about to throw away her crest? Telling Yamato off in Pinnochimon's forest? This? Even when Joe's crest first activates.
Tumblr media
^I can imagine Jou panicking about his glasses being broken in the background, lol.
Tumblr media
^GREETINGS APOCALYMON
Tumblr media
^Oh damn, Apocalymon
Tumblr media
^WITCHELNY!!! HE'S TALKING ABOUT WITCHELNY!!!!
Tumblr media
^Yes, yeah, I know he's stupidly gullible in this part but I just feel so bad for the little guy :( I'm also gonna say Divorce Ouch #3 because he gets his abandonment issues from that.
Tumblr media
^Ah, so 'Darkeru' is a defense mechanism this early on.
Tumblr media
^THE SPOT
Tumblr media
^Oh fuck Mugendramon is killing shit already.
Tumblr media
^Ah, so they fought! Makes sense, both being emotional.

Ghost Game Episode 4 Review
The Doll’s Manor
Hiro helps Ruli and friends to decorate a school for Halloween. Unfortunately, roaming the halls is a Pumpmon who seems to have misunderstand the purpose of the season.
Tumblr media
Sorry this review is a bit later than usual. I got about half way through writing and then life got in the way for a bit. Fair warning that it jumps around a bit!
Spoilers below!
There’s still a lot of information in these episodes, but overall I’m pretty impressed with the pacing even if there have been a couple of moments that felt a little rushed. It’s nothing that upsets my enjoyment , but I’m somewhat hoping the next episode just focusses mainly on the characters and monster(s) of the week above any more worldbuilding for now.
Characters
Seems Ruli gets involved in a lot of different activities and has a large number of friends. Given what we know of her personality so far it’s not too surprising but she seems much more confident compared to last episode. Not being targeted by a digimon probably helps! She also seems to have already figured out that Hiro will pretty much do anything when asked!
Tumblr media
For anyone (like me) who is struggling to keep up with Ruli’s friends, the girls either side of Akane are the two we’ve seen hanging out with Ruli from the beginning of the season.
Tumblr media
Pumpmon kinda reminded me of a polar opposite of Pinnochimon from Adventure. He completely misinterprets friendship, but is genuinely interested in making connections rather than having servants to bully. I kinda hope the kids end up running into him again (I mean, he’s in the into, so there’s a chance right?) Also, for those wondering how an Adult managed to subdue a Perfect, BetalGammamon is a virus with type advantage against Pumpmon. Plus, he only got scorched.
Worldbuilding
The slightly generic plot of this episode gave time to focus on some of the mechanics of Ghost Game’s world. As is typical for Digimon, the Vitality Bracelet doesn’t come with instructions, leaving the kids to figure things out for themselves. Some combination of presses takes Hiro and Gammamon to a strange parallel human world.
Tumblr media
We saw this world before in the first episode, but it was good to understand a bit more of the mechanics; for example, the fact that something damaged in the pseudo-human world doesn’t affect the equivalent object in the human one. It’s a nice way of keeping the violence and destruction of property to a minimum, so as a fan of cultural touchstones not being destroyed I approve of this. Angoramon later makes a comment on how it looks similar to the Digital World, suggesting that it may be a plain between the world that is neither completely one or the other (or the Digital World itself?). It’s also interesting to note that in this world the digimon are fully materialised:
Tumblr media
…and that they disappeared when Hiro and the others went back to their own world. Did they stay in the in-between world, or is that how digimon can return to the Digital World?
Angoramon also tells the others about the Digital World’s origin, which seems similar to Tamers in that the Digital World has apparently spawned from the human world.
I also kinda love that Ruli and Hiro are just letting people believe their digimon are really advanced holos. It plays into the theme of the show that people will believe what they want to whether it’s actually true or not. Bet the Adventure and Tamers kids are jealous though!
And as a final point, I decided to capture this image as it somewhat supports my theory that child-level digimon struggle to interact with the human world objects more than higher level digimon. Plus, it's cute!

Digimon Xros Wars: Hunters Ep19 liveblog
it's been a while. today tagiru will do silly things underwater. just like cult classic wii game endless ocean blue world 2
ahhh oh no the diver swam into digiquartz. that is interesting imagine going diving and you find something like that
ah the old man
yaaay airu is here again. the writers are gradually getting worse and worse about writing her (right now her only defining trait is trying to get yuu to go out with her, compared to the at-least-slightly-more interesting obsession with cute things she had before) but im still fond of her. especially since she shares a va with shirayuki hime cure princess my favorite precure
this is a fishing episode. another fun type of very basic cartoon plot.
ah it's another one of those adventure 02 armor evolution digimon! xros wars loves those. i guess the old man gave the diving girl a xros loader & she found a partner who also likes diving!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know it's for the benefit of the audience bc the character of the day says treasure hunter in english so taiki explains what it means in japanese but just looking at the subtitles out of context is funny
she dives to clean up the ocean and wound up finding treasure along the way
i still love the way how so many different kids with different priorities wind up becoming hunters or otherwise friends with digimon, and how a lot of them don't even hunt, they just do other stuff and have fun with their partners
Tumblr media
YEAHH CUTE DIVING OUTFIT!!
i wonder if gumdramon will need an oxygen tank in the end
Tumblr media
oh so you picked the SMARTER solution? you're too GOOD for a diving outfit? is that how it is?
i guess gumdramon really is fine an oxygen tank? do digimon not have to breathe...?
Tumblr media
i like this episode so far. ↑ this is awesome.
so there was a barrier in the ship graveyard and only humans can open it. there's a guy inside the barrier who says "please don't open it" and a guy outside the barrier who says "please open it" and the outside guy used mizuki's treasure hunting ambition to manipulate her/mind control/whatever into opening it
well submarimon has absolutely no hesitation in obeying mizuki's uncharacteristic orders
this is the first time a human who already has a partner has had their ambitions and emotions manipulated by an enemy/rogue digimon
HUH
I LOOKED AWAY FOR A SECOND & NOW TAGIRU IS TRYING TO XROS ARRESTERDRAMON WITH THAT GIANT MECH DIGIMON PINNOCHIMON WAS TRYING TO BUILD???
and so the evil mech is overriding the xros. also this is probably the worst-looking xros up of arresterdramon's so far.
and now taiki and the nice digimon is reminding her how her real ambition is to protect the sea
and the solution for the berserk xros up was for tagiru to control him like pinnochimon did back in the day. it's all coming together
and now everything's fine and mizuki put the nice digimon back in the ocean with its egg. that was a fun episode.

comments on the third adventure novel!
In case you’ve missed it (like I did), the lovely onkei-kunhas begun translating the long-awaited third volume of the digimon adventure novels!
All the novels are truly worth a read, but here’s some parts I found really interesting.
NOTES: Some events happen differently than in the show. Overall, character motivations/transformations post the events of Vamdemon arc are written in a very direct, clear way in the novels, clarifying things that in the show are more “suggested” than told. The novelisationhave the benefit of hindsight, so they are able to connect the different arcs and 02 in a smoother way. Additionally, you can tell the people behind tri. paid a lot of attention to these books.
There are brief cameos from Daisuke, Iori and their respective families during the Vamdemon arc. It’s confirmed that Daisuke and Taichi knew each other before Adventure.
We get some insights about the Takenouchi family dynamics and few interesting theories are confirmed: Takenouchi is actually Yoshiko’s family surname, and Sora’s parents have a somehow complicated marriage (or, at least, it’s perceived like that from the outside). Sora rebelled against her mother as she felt she “treated her apprentices highly, but her own husband frivolously”.
Natsuko’s backstory also gets more developed. It’s explicitly confirmed that her father is French (something I called years ago!) and that she used to live in France. She works as a translator and as a non-fiction writer who starts investigating the Hikarigaoka attacks. While investigating this, she was contacted by Oikawa, but he stood her up before they could meet.
Natsuko is so cool, man. No wonder she married Hiroaki freaking Ishida:
Most of her work involved being a reportage writer for physics and chemistry research. Although she couldn’t say that she was paid well for it, she felt that this suited her better than a regular desk job. Among her normal jobs, a side project that she was working on involved investigating the “Hikarigaoka terrorist bombing incident” four years ago. It was an incident that occured in the very place where they had lived. Not only did it capture her interest, but as she kept investigating it, she found many aspects about it that weren’t acceptable explanations to her.
Mimi’s father is a “freelance audio mixer for rock music” (makes sense why he moved so easily to America).
We got more details about where each kid lives:
Taichi’s family lived in a four-unit condominium that was partitioned by a road from the condominium of Sora and Koushiro’s families. Yamato lived in yet another unit that was closer to Fuji TV station.
It’s confirmed directly that Vamdemon, Etemon, and Devimon were working under the Dark Masters. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, the novels tie all the different arcs together in a more coherent way.
You also get an explanation about how the Holy Beasts were sealed by the Dark Masters.
The argument around the graveyard plays in a somehow different way from the show, and motivations and feelings are made much more explicit. The ideological positions of Taichi and Yamato are given a lot more nuance here.
Yamato is really nasty in this scene, but conversely, you get to really figure out what is going on with his head, and why he is losing confidence in Taichi as a leader and feeling dejected that Takeru is growing up.
Taichi’s evolution into becoming less impulsive and reckless are explicitly linked to the fact that Hikari is now a part of the team and how it made Taichi more empathic with other people.
Koushirou directly and empathically tells Yamato that he’s too emotional to be a good leader.
For example, Yamato reflects how he went from blocking his emotions to being an overly emotional mess:
Ever since coming to the Digital World, even Yamato was surprised by how much emotion he expressed. All of the emotion that he’d held back while at home, at school, had come bursting out without pause. And this Yamato was the only one that Koushiro knew. That was why Koushiro’s view of Yamato was “an emotionally unstable upperclassman.
Actually, Yamato’s feelings during his whole “breakdown” arc are so well done here. You’ve got to read the whole thing.
Jou offers to accompany Mimi instead of Sora because he felt that it was his job.
Sora understands Yamato going away because she felt the same way when she left the group earlier.
There is actually no MetalGarurumon vs WarGreymon battle at this point.
“Ogremon took a moment to imagine everyone living together as friends, but it made him feel ill.“ (No comment, I just found this line funny).
The reason why MetalGarurumon defeats Pinnochimon so easily is that he is powered by the hatred on Yamato’s heart (after he witnesses Pinnochi murdering his own soldiers).
Yamato goes really dark in this part and thinks allowing himself to bask in merciless hatred will allow him to kill the Dark Masters on his own. This leads directly to him being taken by a “dark gas” (the rough equivalent of the Dark Cave).
Many mentions of Idea — probaby where tri’s writters came up with some ideas... they really went through these novels!
The equivalent to the Dark Cave scene is. SO. GREAT. (Though Sora doesn’t get to be a victim in the novel)
OMG
“As the gas thinned out around them, Yamato saw the shadows of other people ahead. It was Takeru and Sora, but to Yamato, Sora looked like someone else. Mom…”
(As a shipper, I honestly can’t tell if this is sweet or really messed up.)
To be continued as the translation is out… meanwhile, do yourself a favour and read it! And, while you’re at it, check out onkei’sko-fi page because honestly, we do not deserve her.

oh my god i just got to the pinnochimon's dangerous game episode (43)
oh my god you all were not kidding about that puppet packing heat
#sky talks#digimon#digimon adventure#the amount of out of context screenshots i just sent to our brother#i know it's serious in-text but i couldn't stop laughing jknfdsjkbfsdfs#like god damn how the hell did the dub manage to get around that at ALL??#i also know the stylistic contrast of Cute Cartoony Characters vs that's just a real ass gun is like#an artistic choice that the creators probably made#because again the text of the episode pretty explicitly shows that pinochimon doesn't really care about the consequences of shooting people#i doubt it's naivete so much as a lack of comprehension for the lives of others being more than “toys” to him#especially seeing his insecurities when tk calls him out on not having a single friend#and then when he “makes” a friend it's explicitly a doll shaped after him#because he's the only person he could see himself being a friend to#i always have such mixed feelings about the dark master's arc for reasons that this rewatch might actually remedy#but pinochimon's arc was always interesting in that it's one of few arcs in the original series that isn't super subtle about paralleling#one of the digidestined's current crises#like sub or dub it's super obvious that pinochimon is an inverse of yamato's crest of friendship#and by extension yamato himself#insecurity and a lack of trust in other people is what drives them both to suffer#yamato because he can't seem to imagine others in the group caring for his brother as much as he can#(which is a long-term issue but ramps up again in the dark master's arc unsurprisingly)#pinochimon because he can't trust any other digimon to be his equals#if anything pinochimon#along with all the dark masters#are like coworkers not friends#anyways#it's still extremely fucking jarring seeing that puppet boy packing heat

Top 5 moments that Takeru loved remembering while writing the book on his adventures, and top 5 moments he dreaded remembering?
I’m just working on the fic at the moment, so feel free to send any asks!
To nobody’s surprise, narrowing down the list of dreaded moments was about as tricky as coming up with five moments he actually was fond of. Kid saw stuff.
Moments He Loved:
Meeting Tokomon: That first moment when he met his new best friend for life was obviously a big one that he was more than happy to talk about.
Playing in the Snow/the Egg Conversation: After a string of harrowing scrapes, he really enjoyed chilling out and being silly with his new friends.
Primary Village: Nade nade… also he got to play sumo official! That was fun!
Finding His Crest: Not one of the more noteworthy moments in the series overall, but imagine his personal joy when he gets his crest and gets some validation after the fate he had.
Defeating Apocalymon: Coming out of nothingness to step up for the final battle was an untarnished moment of triumph. He didn’t get many of those.
Moments He Dreaded:
Losing Patamon: If he still had recurring nightmares of it later, turning it into a digestible narrative couldn’t have been any fun.
Escaping Pinnochimon: What should have been a moment of glory for him took a dark turn when he thinks about how it drove Yamato away. He can’t spin it too proudly in the book since it comes off as vain, but the aftermath is just miserable.
Piemon: It turned into a big moment for him, but really all he remembers is a clown with swords chasing him just after turning his brother into a keychain. The terror of being not only alone, but responsible for Hikari, haunts him no matter how much he rose to the occasion.
The Dark Ocean: Speaking of Hikari, knowing something was going wrong with her but being unable to help and even being spurned when he tried gave him such a helpless feeling that nothing about that encounter gives him any satisfaction.
Who he was in 02: Suffice to say he was working through a lot. Between his reactions to the change in leadership, Ken’s meddling with evil, the effort to bring him into the group, his struggles bonding with Iori, and his general attitude, he probably doesn’t like much about who he was in the second adventure, tainting his experience.

Digimon Adventure (Blind Watch) - Episode 43
This episode was wild. Never did I ever expect them to give the digimon guns. Definitely wouldn’t fly today, at least not in an American TV broadcast (Japan doesn’t have our gun violence).  It’s not like there haven’t been digimon trying to kill the kids this whole time, but when you bring realistic weapons into the picture it gets a little uncomfy. Moral dissonance aside, I feel like it also just felt out of place with Pinnochimon’s theming? He’s very childish and all of his other “weapons” are like Playmobil toys, so throwing a normal gun in there felt kinda weird. Other than that nitpick, I very much enjoyed the chaos.
Digimon introduced: Kiwimon, Mushroomon, Floramon, Blossomon, Deramon
Notes:
-So MetalSeadramon got around 2 episodes and it seems Pinnochimon will too. I wonder if this will be the formula for the rest of the baddies? I like that they’re giving each member of the villain squad enough time to breath and feel like a real threat.
-Kiwimon was “once thought to be extinct,” so I guess extinction is a thing in the digimon world. The digimon life cycle and population is so vague, honestly. They’re probably leaving it vague on purpose so they can resurrect digimon whenever it’s convenient.
-Not only was seeing a gun kinda alarming, but Pinnochimon’s description of what it does was graphic as well, “if you get shot with this you can see the inside of your stomach.” Damn. He also kills/threatens to kill his own subordinates so yeah...
-Really enjoyed the scene with Pinnochimon messing with the kids via voodoo dolls. Love trickster characters (Mad Mod from Teen Titans, Gabriel from Supernatural, etc.) That part also had new character pairings like Hikari and Joe and Koushiro and Mimi, etc.
-Really like Pinnochimon’s voice and crazed personality. So far, I’m liking this arc’s villains more than any of the previous (I really didn’t like Devimon, Etemon, or Vamdemon to be honest).
-Yamato has a lot of feelings this episode and lashes out. I guess you could say he’s the most sensitive of the group since we’ve seen this before. I thought the conflict between emotions and doing what’s right was handled pretty well. It felt like a pretty Japanese conflict to have (collectivism, suppressing your true feelings, etc.)
-I thought it was interesting that they chose to include 4 new digimon as background characters but they barely got any screen time and 2 died. That’s pretty rare. Wondering if the other 2 will return next episode.
-Kiwimon’s attack is called “little pecker” in the sub teehee
-Takeru’s ability to play mind games with Pinnochimon so calmly was impressive. It’s nice to see the growth of the human characters acknowledged in addition to the digimon getting stronger.

Admit it. Did you secretly become Pinnochimon's apprentice while you were still cute and apparently-innocent?
"I'm still cute and innocent I don't know what you're talking about."
