Transcript:
Dr. Garza: Dawn, maybe we should— Dawn: Just give him one more minute. He said he’d be here, he’ll be here. Dr. Garza: Okay, but I do have another appointment after this. We can’t wait much longer. Dawn: I understand. I’m sure he’s close.
Phoenix: Hi. Dawn: There you are. Where have you been? Phoenix: Traffic, I’m sorry, I got here as fast as I could.
Dr. Garza: Let’s go ahead and get started. I’ve looked over your lab results, and everything looks great. I have a copy for you to look over, and I’m happy to answer any questions if you have them, but I don’t see anything concerning. Dawn: Ok, great. Dr. Garza: Now, I understand you wanted to discuss fertility options, and the possibility of IVF? Dawn: That’s right.
Dr. Garza: Well, I’m afraid we can’t pursue that at this time because, according to your bloodwork… Dawn, you’re already pregnant. Dawn: I’m sorry, what? Phoenix: Are you sure? Dr. Garza: I’m sure.
Dawn: I don’t understand. I haven’t felt… I’m not sick. Last time I was so sick. Dr. Garza: Symptoms can vary between pregnancies. Your circumstances now are also very different now than they were then. And you may still develop symptoms.   Dawn: Right. So, do we know if… I mean, what are the chances... [voice cracks] I’m sorry. Dr. Garza: [handing Dawn a tissue] It’s okay. Given your history, I’ve booked the ultrasound so we can check on the health of the baby today and get an idea of how far along you are. I have no reason to believe there’s anything wrong at this point, okay?
[Dawn nods, wiping her eyes]
Dr. Garza: Like last time, we’ll do a transvaginal ultrasound. You’ll want to empty your bladder, and then undress from the waist down. I’ll leave a gown here for you and be back in a few minutes. Dawn: Okay. Thank you.
Dawn: You’re awfully quiet. Are you okay? Phoenix: Yeah. Just nervous. Are you okay? Dawn: I think so. I can’t believe we’re here again. How fertile are you? Phoenix: [laughs] We’ve been having unprotected sex for like four years and you’ve gotten pregnant twice. I don’t think that speaks highly of my fertility. Dawn: It does for me. Phoenix: I guess.
Dr. Garza: Are you ready? Dawn: I’m ready. Dr. Garza: Great. This will be a little cold, but just try to relax. If you experience any pain or discomfort, or if you want to stop at any time, just let me know, okay? Dawn: Okay.
Dawn: Is this really happening? Phoenix: [sniffles] Yeah, it’s really happening.
Dawn: I can’t believe it. We’re going to have a baby.

Phoenix: Hi. Dawn: Hi. What are you doing up? Phoenix: Couldn’t sleep.
Dawn: [kisses his back] Mm. You okay? Phoenix: Oh yeah, I’m good. Just enjoying a quiet moment while it lasts. Dawn: Do you want to be alone? Phoenix: No, no. Stay.
Phoenix: I was thinking… I’d like to take Aspen to Copperdale, to meet Julian. And there’s something I kind of want to do while I’m there. Will you come with me? Dawn: Yeah, of course. Phoenix: Thanks. [squeezes her] I love you. Dawn: I love you too.
Dawn: We should go back to bed. Phoenix: I’m not really tired. Dawn: Me either. Phoenix: Mm, we’re going to be exhausted tomorrow. Dawn: Worth it.

Phoenix: What? Dawn: Phoenix, you have the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever known, and I love you so much.
Phoenix: But? Dawn: No but, just listen. Phoenix: Okay.
Dawn: You know how everyone says that your whole life flashes before your eyes before you die? Phoenix: Yeah.
Dawn: When we were on that mountain… when I fell. I thought for sure I was going to die. But my whole life didn’t flash before my eyes. All I saw was you. Every second from the moment we met. And then I stopped, and suddenly everything was silent and black. And then I heard your voice. When I opened my eyes, I saw you. You caught me. I don’t even know how that’s possible. But you did. You’re not just the love of my life, you’re my partner, my hero, my soulmate. Not a day has gone by that I haven’t felt safe, supported, and loved by you too.
Dawn: Now you can ask me. Phoenix: Will you marry me? Dawn: Of course, I will.

Transcript and Bonus below the cut:
Phoenix: It’s been ten years, almost to the day, since I lost my mom. I’ve been thinking about her a lot since we had Aspen. Something about knowing that she’ll never get to know her granddaughter. That Aspen will never get to know her. It’s a different kind of grief that I wasn’t prepared for.
Phoenix: [wipes a stray tear from his eye] After I moved in with Julian, I would come out here sometimes. I’d sit on this bench and look out at the water, and I’d talk to her. I’d tell her about my life, that I loved her and missed her, that I was sorry for being such a pain in the ass. I even told her about Malcolm. I don’t know why this spot. Maybe just because it’s pretty here, and away from everything and quiet, but I could almost convince myself that she could hear me.
Phoenix: I guess I hoped that by bringing you both here… well, it’s the closest I could get to introducing you.   Dawn: If your mom was here right now, would she prefer it if I called her Leanne? Or Miss Realta? Phoenix: [breathes a laugh through his nose] Definitely Leanne. She’d give me hell if I let you call her Miss Realta. Dawn: Okay. Well, Leanne, my name is Dawn, and I am madly in love with your son. We’re getting married in a couple of months, and I’m so excited. You’re invited, of course, if you can make it to Brindleton Bay.
Dawn: Most importantly, though, this is Aspen. She’s your granddaughter. Her middle name is Leanne, after you, of course. And, um, you should know that Phoenix is an incredible father. I wish I could’ve gotten to know you. And I wish you were here to give me some parenting advice because you clearly did something right, and I feel so lost all of the time. But I promise we’ll come back to visit, at least every Winterfest, so you can see Aspen as she gets older.
Phoenix: Thank you. Dawn: Thank you for sharing this place with us. I can see why you were drawn to it. It does kinda feel like she’s here, like she’s listening. Phoenix: [nods but doesn’t speak for fear that his voice will betray him] Aspen: [coos] Phoenix: [clears his throat] Did I ever tell you that she wanted to write children’s books? Dawn: I remember you saying she used to make up stories a lot when you were little.
Phoenix: Yeah [smiles at the memory] She was never able to pursue writing seriously because she was always working two or three jobs to take care of us, to take care of me. I always hoped she’d be able to one day, and that she’d publish her own books. I can probably tell Aspen a few of them from memory, but how cool would it have been to be able to give her an actual book?
Dawn: That would’ve been amazing. Out of all the stories she told you, did you have a favorite?
Phoenix: Oh, god, um… if I had to pick, it would probably be this one about a polar bear name JuJu that dreamed of going to Jupiter. [laughs] I remember, we were learning about the solar system in school, and we all had to do a report on a planet. I chose Jupiter. But I had a really hard time writing the report, I’d never done one before. So, she made up this story about my favorite animal, a polar bear, going to Jupiter. It was really funny and full of facts about the planet. Not only did I get an A on my report, but I made her retell the story about a hundred times.
Dawn: Aw, that’s so cute. I wanna hear it. Will you tell us the story? Phoenix: Right now? Dawn: Yeah. Phoenix: Okay, sure…

And, of course, Aspen got to meet her Great Uncle Julian while they were in Copperdale. She was a little unsure at first, but she warmed up to him pretty quick. 🥰

Transcript:
After a couple of meals, a few liters of water, and plenty of sleep, the group was ready to take on the hardest part of their expedition. The steep ascent to the summit.
Dawn is feeling better, at least her nausea and headache have subsided, but her body is still feeling fatigued.
She tells herself this is normal. Everyone is tired and sore by now. But they’re so close. Everything they’ve worked for over the last year is only a few miles ahead of them.
When they reach the final rock face, they can do little more than stare in awe.
It’s larger than anything they’ve seen before now and covered in ice.
They all take a moment to gaze up at it and inspect it, finding a path up.
Kiyoshi and Atlas start climbing first. Each taking a different route while the others watch from below.
Dawn decides to follow Atlas, feeling more confident in the path he took.
The ice makes it difficult, she slips once, but regains her hold.
About halfway up, she notices a shimmering aura in her periphery.
Soon, the ache starts behind her eye again, made worse by the sun reflecting off the snow at the top.
She’s tempted to pull her goggles down to cover her eyes, but with the ice coating the rock, her grip is precarious at best.
Dawn: [to herself] You’re almost there. Just keep going.
She adjusts her gaze and continues on.
She’s forced to stop and take a breath when she’s hit with a wave of nausea.
Phoenix watches anxiously from the bottom. Having watched her climb many times before, he can tell something is off.
She can see the ledge only a few feet ahead, can hear Atlas and Kiyoshi talking just out of view.
She reaches for the next hold, but stops when her foot slips out from under her.
Her muscles begin trembling as she keeps herself in place, trying to get her foot secured again to take the pressure off her upper body. Before she can, her hand start slipping, and she realizes she’s not going to be able to hold on much longer.
Dawn: Atlas!
Hearing the panic in his sister’s voice, Atlas runs to her without thinking.
He’s relieved to see how close she is; he can nearly reach her.
Atlas: I got you. Take my hand. Dawn: I can’t.
Atlas: You can. Dawn: No, I can’t hold on. Atlas: Come on. You’re so close, I’m right here.
As she moves to reach for him her foot slips off again. Atlas grabs for her.
But it’s too late.

Author’s Note
A few things to understand about Dawn:
She very much lives in the future. It’s what makes her such an optimistic person, and able to shove away the pain of the past. She’s always looking forward. So, when the future is uncertain, she gets a bit frantic.
She would much rather spin out on tangible problems like time and money than face the deeper, more abstract feelings trying to surface. If she’s spinning on the details, then there’s no room for the emotion to come through.
And if she can figure out all those little details and have a plan, then she can go back to living in that future place and keep those nasty emotions buried deep where she believes they belong.
But, as I’m sure we all know, what you don’t face will come back around one way or another.
Transcript:
Phoenix: What are you doing? Dawn: I can’t sleep. Phoenix: What time is it? Dawn: A little after two. Phoenix: Come here, come back to bed. Dawn: I’m too restless.
Phoenix: What’s on your mind? Dawn: Nothing. Everything. Phoenix: Do you wanna talk about it? Dawn: [sighs] I don’t know yet. But since you’re awake, can I ask you something? Phoenix: Of course.
Dawn: What do you want more: to get married or have a baby? Phoenix: What kind of a question is that? Dawn: I just mean, we’re gonna have to prioritize. The fact is, we only have so much money in savings. If we have to go through IVF, then we can’t afford to do that AND have a wedding.
Phoenix: Told you we should’ve eloped. Dawn: I’m serious. Phoenix: I know, I’m sorry. Dawn: So, if we can only do one now, which would you choose? Phoenix: I- I don’t know. I think I’d choose baby, but if it’s important to you to be married first, then— Dawn: No, I don’t care about that. I think I just worry that if we put it off now, then it might never happen. Phoenix: What do you mean?
Dawn: Like, if we go through this process and it’s successful, that’s great, but then we have this baby taking all our time and energy and money and we’re on our own and how do we even save and plan for a wedding while doing all of that? And there’s no guarantee that it will even be successful, so what do we do then? If we put our savings into this and it doesn’t work? Do we save again for a year and be right back where we are now? I hate that it has to be so hard. Maybe it’s better to focus on getting married now because we know in the end that day will be wonderful and happy and then we save and try for a baby after. But we’ve already waited a year to start this process and I don’t know if I want to wait another. I was so happy and excited and now I’m freaking out and I don’t know what the right answer is.
Phoenix: Dawn, sweetie, breathe.
Dawn looks up at him, tears stinging the backs of her eyes threatening to betray her.
Phoenix: Come over here.
Dawn: What? Phoenix: I know it’s not what you want to hear, but there is no right answer. All we can do is take things one step at a time. When is your appointment? Dawn: I don’t know. I was going to call them tomorrow.
Phoenix: Good, go ahead and make the appointment. Let’s see what your doctor says, and then we can decide what direction we want to go. We don’t have to figure it all out now, okay? Dawn: Okay. Phoenix: Is there something else? Dawn: No. I don’t know. I don’t want to talk anymore tonight. Phoenix: Alright. We don’t have to.
Phoenix: It’s all going to work out though, I promise. Dawn: How do you know? Phoenix: Because we’re in it together. Dawn: [grins] Is that the best you’ve got? Phoenix: That’s all I’ve got.

Phoenix: You really should tell Ash. Dawn: [sighs] I know. I’ll call him later.
Dawn: Are you working late again tonight? Phoenix: Probably. Dawn: [frowns] You’ve been working so much lately. Phoenix: I know. I’ll have a bunch of time off as soon the baby gets here. But that means I have to work more now to get ready. Dawn: Still sucks. Phoenix; Yeah, it does.
Dawn: Megan’s throwing that baby shower thing this weekend. Will you be able to come? Phoenix: I thought those things were only for women. Dawn: Pfft… not mine. I refuse to have some no-boys-allowed party where they stick me in the center of a room and play a bunch of stupid games. Phoenix: [laughs] You sure? That sounds amazing.
Dawn: We’ll throw you one then. Phoenix: No thanks. Dawn: Exactly. And I really hate the idea of a bunch of people buying us stuff. I’d rather just have a celebration where everyone can get together and enjoy themselves. Nothing fancy. Phoenix: Sounds perfect.
Phoenix: I have to get going. Dawn: Okay. See you for breakfast tomorrow then? Phoenix: Definitely. Dawn: ‘kay. And you’ll be able to come on Saturday? To the shower? Phoenix: I wouldn’t miss it. Dawn: Good.
Dawn: Ash, hi, are you busy?

Phoenix: There you are. What are you doing in here? Dawn: Just thinking. Phoenix: Mind if I join you? Dawn: Not at all.
Phoenix: What are we thinking about? Dawn: I don’t know what to do. Phoenix: About what?
Dawn: Just in general. I feel like I should be doing something. Like, reading parenting books, going to pregnancy classes, or decorating a nursery… I don’t know. What do people do when they find out they’re pregnant? Phoenix: Well, you— Dawn: But also, I’m too scared to start doing anything because maybe it’s too soon, maybe we should wait, just in case anything goes wrong.   Phoenix: I— Dawn: Do we tell anyone? I want to tell Atlas. Is that okay?
Phoenix: Of course, that’s okay. Dawn: I’m doing it again, aren’t I? Phoenix: Mhm Dawn: Okay. [takes a deep breath] So, what’s the next step then? Phoenix: I don’t know. I’ve never done this before. What do you want to do? Dawn: What do you mean?
Phoenix: Let’s say everything is going to be fine, what sounds like the most fun thing to do? Dawn: [smiles] Decorate the nursery. Phoenix: Ah. That does sound fun. Is that why you’re in here?
Dawn: Maybe. I’m trying to picture it. What do you think the theme should be? Phoenix: Theme? Dawn: I did the math. I’m six weeks pregnant, which means it happened in Sulani. Maybe we do an ocean theme? Phoenix: We could do that.
Dawn: We could put up a wallpaper with cute little sea creatures on it. Or that looks like you’re under water. We could put the crib over there.
Phoenix: Maybe we should change the carpet. A sandy color, like the beach.
Dawn: Yeah, that’d be perfect.
Dawn: Thank you. Phoenix: For what? Dawn: For being here. Phoenix: I’ll always be here. Dawn: I know.

Megan: How is the wedding planning going? Dawn: [laughs] It’s a lot harder now that Aspen is here. But I finally got the invitations out, so we’re making progress. Megan: Can I help with anything? What do you have left to do?
