Tales for The Estuary: “Sigbin” The Sigbin or Sigben is a creature that is considered as an Asuang’s pet companion. It is said to come out at night to suck the blood of victims from their shadows. Accounts also show that it can walk and run backwards with its head lowered between its hind legs. It has the ability to become invisible to other creatures, especially humans. It resembles a hornless goat, but has very large ears which it can clap like a pair of hands, probably as a distraction, so it can whip you with its long and flexible tail. The Sigbin is said to emit a nauseating odor. Western cryptozoologists compare it to the South America’s “chupacabra”. Last sighting of the Sigbin was on May 2020. Where a pack of sigbins attacked five cows reportedly in Misamis Occidental, and died with deep wounds while their internal organs missing. Day 31: #Colossal - Bakonaua Bakonaua is a colossal celestial dragon in ancient Filipino tales that is said to cause eclipses. Pre-colonial Filipinos believed that there were seven moons created by the supreme god, Batala (Bathala). This dragon would come, in a cycle, from the deepest parts of space in order to devour the moons whole, angering Batala and causing them to be mortal enemies. To keep the moons from completely being swallowed, ancient Filipinos would go out of their homes with pans and pots, and would make noise in order to scare the dragon. Tales from the Estuary: “Tianac” This belongs to the group of creatures considered as the New Monsters. The New Monsters came into reality during and after the Great Spanish Colonization of the Philippine Islands. There are several theories on how these creatures came to exist. One popular notion is that these creatures were the spirit of the unborn babies who died either through failed childbirth out of wedlock, or some other abortive practices. Being unbaptized, the spirits of these dead babies could not go to the after life, and instead, reverted to a more primordial earthly form. Another theory is that they were specifically created, in secret, by the malevolent entity Merdeca, also known as “The Mother of All Monsters”, before the First Great Rift , of the infamous Makiling Wars. Tianacs take on the form of human toddlers and cry in the jungle to attract unwary travelers. Once picked up by an unfortunate passerby, it reverts to its true form and attacks the victim. These creatures have sharp teeth capable of chewing wood, stone, and some weak metals. Some are also equipped with sharp claws.
