It's September 12th. 🎨 On this day in 1940, 18-year-old auto mechanic Marcel Ravidat took his dog, Robot, for a walk near his home in Montignac, France, and made one of the most stunning archaeological discoveries of all time. During the walk, Robot ran into the entrance of a hole created by a fallen tree. Ravidat threw some stones into the hole and was surprised when they seemed to travel a long ways down. He returned later with a teacher and some friends, and they climbed down the hole. They soon discovered what are now known as the Lascaux cave paintings – 17,000 to 20,000 years old and described by experts as “the cradle of art.”
The cave holds more than 2,000 painted and engraved images of animals and abstract symbols. A watertight protective layer of chalk has remarkably preserved the artwork in vibrant blacks, browns, reds, and yellows. The paintings are almost all of animals. There is only one human depicted and no flowers, trees, or landscape. The meaning of most of the abstract symbols is unknown.
Ravidat became an official guardian of the cave and a guide who, until the day he died in 1995, never lost his initial awe of the artwork he discovered. Lascaux was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, but is now closed to the public for its own protection. Only a few hundred meters away, though, lies Lascaux II – a virtually identical replica with 80% of the original images reproduced. It attracts about 250,000 visitors a year. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
