personally i think more pnf fic authors should work the hilarious story of penelope the platypus into any fic involving OWCA/perry

AKA today's post brought to you by the dumbest paragraphs in a fic i've ever written:

OWCA had never been the most standard agency, however: they’d started out as someone’s crackpot idea to train actual animals into agents, an initiative which had been quickly dropped when the only animal that had shown even the slightest ability to reach levels of sentience OWCA needed had been a female platypus named Penelope a few decades ago. She was ultimately gifted to the Bronx Zoo when OWCA gave up on animals altogether, and then promptly made the news for faking a pregnancy for extra rations and then escaping back to OWCA—not that the general public knew about that last part. (Penelope had been hastily shipped back to Australia and hopefully lived a long life in the wild.)

OWCA had stuck with animal code names for their now very much human agents, however—and in honor of Penelope, the best agent of every generation was assigned the platypus.

(Perry still kind of thought he ultimately won the moniker because ‘Perry the Platypus’ rolled off the tongue better than most other agents’ names.)

Penelope (disappeared July 1957) was a platypus at the Bronx Zoo known for faking a pregnancy and her repeated refusal to mate with the zoo's male platypus, Cecil. The New York Times said that Penelope was... "sick of love" when she escaped from the zoo's platypusary in 1957, never to be seen again.

On August 19, 1957, a Time magazine article wrote that she was "one of those saucy females who like to keep a male on a string".

Teddy the Pomeranian is owned by the submitter's local dog cafe, and the image used was distributed on that company's public Instagram account for promotional purposes. Fira the cat is owned by @notblueferet, image used with permission. Mashed Potato the rabbit is owned by @boba-thot, image used with permission. Image used for White Gladys is an actual orca involved in the attacks believed to have been orchestrated by White Gladys, though it cannot be determined if it is the original herself. Penelope the Platypus lived and died in the 1940s-1950s and I was not able to find digitized photos of her. (If anyone has any, please send them to me.) A generic image of a platypus was used to represent her.

I think that male bettas are pretty well known for being little murder gremlins at this point, but the females really deserve the title of morally ambiguous girlboss. Unlike the males, you can put multiple female bettas in a tank together and they usually won’t fight to the death immediately. And people usually assume that that means their tank is peaceful now. No, you put multiple female bettas in a tank and they are all just biding their time, ready to start the murderfest whenever they feel they’re strong enough. But they’re also really sweet to humans and if you set up the tank correctly and pay close enough attention to it then bettas sororities can work, so I think they deserve the title of morally ambiguous girlboss

Teddy:

Honestly she's beautiful, she loves belly rubs, she is plotting something. She's hbic. She's going to take over the world one day. She's sneaky but also has a love of pink chairs. She's an icon

White Gladys:

Miss Orca was harmed by boats and then plotted revenge by teaching other orcas how to attack boats and they all went on the sink yatchs <3

Penelope:

girl faked a pregnancy for extra food and ESCAPED THE PLATYPUS ENCLOSURE when the jig was up, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN. girlboss behavior if i've ever seen it.

Fira:

You could say she is... Morally.. GREY (I'm sorry)

She is sometimes so so sweet and honestly she's an absolute icon really but also she eats my curtains and that's kind of a dick move

“Aaron,” the British accent that came from her was as annoying as it was endearing. She didn’t call him Hotch, she called him Aaron. And, for some reason, that was almost the worst part. Nobody called him Aaron; Emily only called him Aaron when they were alone, or inside of her own head.

On either side of her, Penelope and JJ glanced across, the three of them sharing a wordless judgement, a promise of a discussion that would take place later, an assessment of what they were witnessing. Penelope looked away, but JJ’s eyes lingered on Emily’s for a moment longer, and she knew Jennifer was checking on her. Still the only member of the team who knew about their affair, JJ was the only one who could possibly assume Emily would feel any sort of way about Kate and Aaron’s interaction. Emily gave the smallest shake of her head, and they both looked forward once more as Aaron introduced them, pasting perfectly polite smiles onto their faces and giving Kate Joyner a nod of acknowledgement. Emily tried not to purse her lips too tightly together. She was secretly pleased to see that Morgan didn’t offer her any sort of smile at all.

Poor Kate had no idea how many members of the BAU already had her card marked for things that were completely out of her control.

i knew there were some platypus in the comics, but i can't say i was really familiar with her. i wonder if she was named after the real-life platypus named Penelope. 🤔
