I'm reading this book, The Politics of Losing: Trump, the klan, and the mainstreaming of resentment

It's a really fascinating read and goes into the different waves of the KKK movements in the US and white nationalism in general and compares it to the sentiment and movements now with the proud boys, oath keepers, trump, Patriot prayer etc. The researchers say the klan movement of the 20s was the largest and the most motivated. They took their anger on immigrants (Italians, Jews, southern Europeans) and Catholics especially vs the other two klans who focused on African Americans mostly.

One thing I didn't know was how active the klan was in promoting public school because they wanted to worsen the immigrant children's education and options with Catholic school- a form of community, preserving the original Italian culture and even charity and help for them. They also promoted a prudish Protestant culture of prohibition and went around mean mugging and harassing teenagers making out in the park or whatever under the guise of family values . This is how this version of the Klan was super popular on Oregon, Colorado and in the Midwest. It's really gross and we can even see a repeat of this today where a lot of action of riots, protests and general unrest is happening in the west vs. the traditional south. Basically what I got from this was areas that are extremely white, middle class and already fine and privileged have the most racists not because of huge waves of immigrants or poc arriving- it has to do with the idea of the possibility of these white people's 95% all white world ending and they want to preserve this homogeneous community at all costs. This is why you dont find the KKK being popular in Boston, NYC, LA etc. Also, when a shift in the global economy happens they immediately blame it on immigrants and diversity vs. capitalism.

Just in case you get into a conversation with someone at a Patriot Prayer rally who asks the typical question “what white supremacists?”

While Jeremy Christian was not directly related with the Patriot Prayer group, this is the sort of mentality that this group attracts. Portland's mayor was concerned enough to try and cancel Patriot Prayer’s next Portland event after the stabbing, but could not. Gibson went onto the news and promised that his next rally would be to promote free speech and christian values, and that there would be absolutely no White Supremacists allowed. Instead, he invited well known white supremacist and YouTube live-streamer Baked Alaska and his bodyguard Antonio Forman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baked_Alaska_(entertainer) Joey Gibson included this header on his facebook for 3 months after that event;

But he felt the need to defend Jeremy Christian, the guy who had stabbed and murdered the 2 men on the Max train in Portland. I mention this guy because he was arrested at the scene of a Patriot Prayer event.
