Pastis

Pastis is an anise-flavoured liqueur, a specialty in Marseille where it is served in every bar and café! While I am not too fond of aniseedy drinks, I do like fennel and I'm fond of dill, and, most importantly, I never visit a place without trying its local staples! I thus had Pastis mixed into one of the cocktails we drank one night (served with panisses, chickpea flour savoury beignets!), or poured over flambéed King prawns at the Frioul islands, where we lunched gazing at the water. I enjoyed it enough to buy a bottle at la Maison du Pastis an old, artisan factory, where a kind old lady explained how to best serve it! It is sunny and warm back home today, but I miss my girl and the sea. So, I pour myself a Pastis, to sip whilst thinking of the wonderful memories we made there! Happy Friday!

Ingredients (serves 1):

6 ice cubes

25 millimitres/1 ounce (2 tablespoons) good quality Pastis

still water, to top

Place ice cubes in serving glass. Pour Pastis over the ice. Top wit still water.

Enjoy Pastis immediately!

Las llaves de la casa que estaba cuidando debía dejarlas en manos de la madre del dueño del inmueble, que vive muy cerca de la mansión, así que cuando abandoné el castillo fui a cumplir mi última misión con la reina madre. La conozco desde mi infancia, hay confianza, y me invitó a almorzar moñitas con tuco. Me recibió hablando mal de la suegra de su hijo porque justo estaba leyendo un mensaje que le había escrito. No supe diferenciar qué tanto se debía a que efectivamente la acusada era una escoria humana, y qué tanto se debía a que estaba celosa porque lo que quiere es ser la única abuela de sus nietos. Cuando por fin me permitió llegar a la mesa, ya estaba con todo listo, solo faltaba servir la pasta que se estaba terminando de hacer. Me senté, era el único caballero en la mesa redonda, vi platos, queso parmesano, una botella con pomelo, y un blíster casi vacío: le quedaban dos pastillas. -Estas son drogas para compartir? -pregunté - para mezclar con los fideos? La señora de 75 años estaba de espaldas, revolviendo la olla. Por un segundo pensé que no había entendido mi broma, o peor: la entendió y no le hizo ninguna gracia. Justo cuando yo estaba por decir algo que me sacara de ese momento incómodo, la señora habló: -Esas pastis son dos medicamentos que tengo que tomar ahora, las puse ahí para no olvidarme -hizo una breve pausa y agregó -tenía fentanilo pero se me terminó ayer.

Moi : Bah écoute encore en vacances mais j'ai pas pu aller à la plage aujourd'hui car j'ai pris super mal au ventre. J'ai pris une dose de pastis tout à l'heure et on dirait que ça passe.

D: Le pastis comme remède ... ça fait bien sudiste ça !

Moi: Non mais c'est l'anis qui fait que ...

I have a bottle of Ricard at home at all time. In fact I brought a tradition to our remote hunting cabin to take a "shtiny cannon" (it's a nod to French film La Soupe aux Choux) every morning before we leave each other, it's a half shot of Ricard with a bit of ice cold water - it's usually freezing up here in moose season - before the person assigned patrol duty hops into the canoe to go scout the area.

So anyway, Ricard pastis is like 45 percent alcohol per volume, it's strong alcohol, so I can understand a lover's concern that Benoit Blanc (Benny White) locked himself in the bath with a bottle of it.
