Hello there! Idk have you ever talk about this or not, but I just found out a translation of an interview with Kubo called 'Bleach Jet' from local Bleach fanbase. One of the question said 'are the captains married? Since the only confirmed married one is Byakuya and he's actually younger than other captains'. Then Kubo answered 'well, tbh I never thought about it. But when I think it over, it would be sad if somebody as old as Yamajii is not married. So let's assume that they could be married, but it's just not necessary to be included in the story so I never write about it'. You know, I was so excited when I read it lok. In your opinion, which captains are apparently married? I only could imagine Ukitake since he's a perfect husband/daddy material (well I also want to know who's that lucky woman). But the others, seems kinda impossible lol. I'll be happy if you responded to my question. Thanks!

OH MAN. I’m interested in this in a couple of ways. The first way I am interested in this question is that neither of us had ever once wondered this. It did not even occur to us to wonder this, LOL. Too busy fixating on WHEELS, apparently.

Because of this, it feels like a magic trick, where the source material has asked you to look in a particular direction at a particular thing and sleight of hand (spouses) might occur before your eyes without you ever seeing it. I truly just took for granted that everyone would be single unless explicitly noted otherwise--Byakuya continues to be married to Hisana in his heart as the only married captain, until eventually Rukia joins him.

But it’s exciting to me that there could already be secret spouses who never came up simply because the narrative was never pointed in their direction. I’ve experienced this with people IRL before, and I think there’s plenty of precedent for this in Bleach itself, given that there are a fair number of shinigami with relatives whom we know to be alive and well and never meet.

For instance, Yoruichi’s brother seems really young, which suggests that their married parents might…? still be alive?? Unless they died tragically in the decades immediately preceding TBTP when Yuushirou was a baby, which I guess is equally possible and probably further justifies Soi Fon’s distaste for Urahara/her being high-strung about the kind of company Yoruichi keeps/depends on. Maybe the Shihouin Parents died when all of Soi Fon’s brothers did. 😬 (Speaking of family members it never occurred to me would have existed until we were told they existed…)

As for our currently or were-recently serving Gotei officers: In my mind, Yamamoto and Sasakibe were together. Not romantically—in a different universe, maybe, but in theirs the fact that Yamamoto is Captain Commander and Sasakibe is his VC precludes all else. Because this relationship exists, it forecloses all notion of other romantic partners, even as they themselves are not romantic partners.

I’ve always imagined Kyouraku and Ukitake having a different but kinda similar thing going on, though I’d be more willing to imagine that Ukitake also has a spouse out there somewhere than Yamamoto having one, re: your suggestion in the original ask. It makes me think about all of Ukitake’s siblings. I assume they’re all well into adulthood at this point but… how much do they know? About how Ukitake died? How much were they depending on his care (financially, family leadership-wise, family mediation-wise, etc.)? :(

One other person I could imagine having a spouse is Rose. Specifically, I could imagine him having had a spouse, past tense—pre-exile. If he were Seireitei-born to some middling noble house. Imagine with me a wife, and a noble marriage put together on the expectation that the line should continue by the birthing of children. It was arranged; they’re well-matched and get on quite famously. They have similar interests and pedigrees and if their marriage is not driven by fiery all-consuming PASSION, well, many marriages aren’t and they always have music to turn to if they’re in need of that kind of enchantment. When Rose was sentenced to death/exiled, his marriage was annulled and his wife was re-married to a different Outoribashi or related clan. I don’t think Rose would have wanted otherwise—it’s been 100 years now, and she and her new husband are quite happy; heirs were produced, etc.—but it’s still sad. The Vizard exile had more consequences than many in the Gotei will ever know, and more still that will never be written.

The second way I am interested in this question is that I actually really enjoy Soul Society as a place where social roles—specifically as they relate to romance, marriage, and children, in any case—are a lot less circumscribed than they are often understood to be in the mainstream of the Living World. If the prototypical narrative in the Living World is, say, "by age 20 you will be married to a spouse of the opposite sex and children will follow thereafter," that doesn’t seem like the case within the Gotei, at least from what we see, and I love thinking through potential factors.

Some baseline examples:

A billionty of the people in Soul Society weren’t born in the first place, and instead arrived.

Shinigami lifespans differ from humans and life milestones may not function in the same way (even as it seems like shinigami spend a LOT of time in what are optimal child-bearing years for us).

Shinigami biology also differs from ours, potentially in ways that matter--who knows what fertility is like for them.

It seems like shinigami are dying just like, all the time, which I can imagine genuinely altering baseline assumptions around what interpersonal relationships are like and what they mean.

I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity here for a lot of different types of relationships being much more normalized and understood alongside the marriage/children route. (And, additionally, the marriage/children route being more naturally understood as itself quite individual and rife with complexities that the boilerplate version of the Living World’s Notion of Marriage tends to leave out.) So that’s all very exciting to me.

What is the prototypical sexuality in Soul Society? Idk, all of them? What is the prototypical formal relationship arrangement? Idk, all of them? With probably more heterosexual coupling (or at least heterosexual-reading coupling), and more monogamy/marriage in noble circles, proportionally-speaking. I mean, I don’t think people getting married and having kids would be exceedingly rare, in the sense that Renji and Rukia probably weren’t making scandalous tabloid splash pages (though maybe on slow news days Hisagi has threatened this—idk I’ve never read WDKALY); but it feels like it would be one option among many, rather than the norm to which all other potentials are compared. I’m very enamored by the idea that D. All of the Above is Soul Society’s default in this one regard.

They might live under ridiculous authoritarian hierarchical military whatnot, but AT LEAST LOVE IS FREE.

History:

Toya was born on the streets in the 66th district, a district known for its notorious gangs and constant crimes. Her parents were killed in a gang war, where she was then taken in by a gang and raised to become one of them.

She spent her days doing petty crimes and getting tattoos to show her loyalty.

Toya first met Soi Fon when she was on a mission in Rukongai with former captain, Yoruichi Shihouin. She rescued Soi Fon from a group of bandits, marking the start of their companionship. After Yoruichi’s betrayal and departure, Toya and Soi Fon became distant. Toya became more involved in criminal behavior, while Soi Fon coped with the loss of her mentor by training nonstop.

Eventually, Toya strived to be a soul reaper, training day and night, in order to do what Reila would have wanted and went to become the 3rd seat of the second division. There she became head of the Detention Unit, looking over the criminals in the Maggot’s Nest. Her and Soi Fon, despite a rough start, managed to make up for the time lost without each other. In light of this, the two start to develop deeper feelings for each other, over time developing their bond. Toya hopes to one day become a captain as she feels her true potential hasn’t been met yet.

General Appearance: Toya is a young woman with sun-kissed skin, short, spiky dark indigo hair and salmon colored eyes. There are two strands of hair that extend down and end just below the shoulder. She is of average height and has a rather slim build. Underneath the robes she is quite toned and has many tattoos covering her body, from neck to toe, to symbolize the gangs she was part of in her hometown. A rather notable one is symbolized by flowers on her chest to symbolize her lost love. Toya has a rather apparent scar on her face and a small beauty mark sits under her right eye. She wears the traditional black shihakusho with a salmon colored sash that matches her eyes around her waist. On her feet are a pair of traditional sandals, though, sometimes she’ll choose to walk around barefoot. Additionally, a necklace with various types of teeth hangs around her neck and she has multiple ear piercings. Just by looking at her, she always seems to wear a rather devilish grin.

About the Character

Personality: Toya is very laid back and chill. She has a careless demeanor and in serious situations she often keeps a naive attitude. She also has moments that seem childish as she likes messing with people. Due to her upbringing, she is rather tomboyish and isn’t one for taking many baths, being even rude as she lacks proper etiquette. This is a large contrast from her captain’s views which sometimes becomes an issue. Despite this, Toya is very loyal to her squad and quite determined in fighting. She never gives up without a fight and tends to get all her tasks done in an efficient manner. When it comes down to it, she can be quite scary when fighting as she is intent on killing her opponent if needed. Additionally, she proves to be quite the flirt and even a pervert as she sometimes obsesses over Rangiku Matsumoto’s breasts. Toya also speaks with a slang tone.

If not using her weapon, she is quite skilled in utilizing punch and kick attacks, training day and night back in her hometown. Despite being so laid-back, her reflexes are top notch, even avoiding her captain’s kunai attacks when she gets on her nerves.

Strength: Despite Toya being a third seat, she is at the combat level of a captain. Her true strength is unknown, however her Bankai had proven to be immensely powerful and destructive.

Durability: Toya is rather durable having a strong muscular build from years of training. She can hold up in a fight for long periods of time.

Spiritual Power: Toya has very strong spiritual pressure, rivaling that of Kenpachi Zaraki when fully exerted. Her spiritual energy glows dark red when unleashed.

Powers and Abilities:

Swordsmanship - Toya is an adept swordsman, being able to wield a katana and her axe with ease. Her axe especially requires a lot of coordination and dexterity, proving that she is skilled at handling.

Kido - Kido is probably Toya’s weakest asset. Though she knows a decent amount of knowledge on them, she doesn’t really rely on their powers.

Shunpo/Flash Step - Being a part of the second division, Toya has a quite efficient shunpo. She is able to be very agile and avoid attacks with ease.

Zanpakuto: Toya’s zanpakuto appears to be a normal size katana which, when commanded, turns into a double-headed axe known as Hakaiono (Axe of destruction). Her command is Creep, and once turned, it becomes about 6 feet tall. The axe is all black, besides the silver blades and the silver chain that extends from the bottom. Toya demonstrates great capability in her handling skills, being quite quick and efficient when striking. For extended attacks, she throws the axe forward and utilizes the chain for reach. When striking, a deep red hue can be seen illuminating from it. A neat ability that her shikai can do is create a shadow clone of itself. This confuses foes on which axe is real.

Zanpakuto Spirit -Toya’s Zanpakuto spirit is of demonic origin. It is reflected by her Bankai in the form of a large demon creature that stands at 10 ft tall. Her zanpakuto realm takes place in a fiery underground cavern.

* Bankai - Her bankai is known as Jigoku no Sōzokujin (Heir of Hell), in which once released, she completely transforms into a demon-like entity. This entity stands at 10 ft tall and is extremely powerful, resembling something from the underworld. A horned skull covers her head from the nose up, with glowing red eyes deep within its sockets. Her once double-ended axe splits into two dual-wielded ones, red cracks glow as they are etched into the blades. She is able to deliver heavy hitting moves in this form, some of wish can cause damage to walls and buildings. Toya rarely releases her zanpakuto due to the destruction it creates in its wake and the fear it brings. The ground starts to crumble and quake, forming tiny streams of magma around the surrounding terrain. The temperature also grows hotter, the warmth becoming almost dense. Toya has yet to fully master her Bankai as it can be very hard to control at times. Often if in her demon state too long, a different force seems to take over her completely, simply looking to destroy anything in its path. Due to this, she tends to be more low key about it around others as it often doesn’t get the best reception. Overall, her Bankai seems to resemble that of a creature from hell, causing speculation as to its origins. Only having used her Bankai a few times in her lifetime, Toya still doesn’t know the full extent of its power.

Background: Marisa Deshawn had dreams of being a successful rapper ever since she was in high school. At fifteen years old, Marisa produced her first mixtape all by herself under the name “Lil’ Killa”, which quickly became popular around her high school. Upon graduating, Marisa changed her stage name to “XO DEATH”, and set her sights on starting an independent label. However, in the years to come, she came to realize that starting a label was harder than she initially thought. Even with only a few acts signed on, she can barely amass enough money to send them on small concert circuits around the city, let alone whole tours. Marisa herself desires to put out a full length album, but every attempt she’s made in trying to amass budget for one has failed, forcing her to put out small mixtapes that receive very little success. Personality/Additional Background: Even in spite of her circumstances, Marisa is pretty outgoing, energetic, and laid back, many citing her has “chill to hang out with. She’s also known for being a bit playful and coy. Marisa spent most of her childhood with both of her parents, but when she was around eleven, her parents divorced. She spent the rest of her adolescence in her mother’s custody, and would see her father every now and again, but he moved out of state and she lost contact with him. When she was fourteen, her mother remarried to a man of Spanish speaking descent, and about a year later, her mother gave birth to Marisa’s half-brother, Nico. Marisa gets along with her step-father just fine, and despite the big age difference, she helps out with her little brother whenever she can. She’s also dedicated a few songs to him at some of her live performances.

Appearance: Marisa has described herself as “little in the middle, but got much back”, whatever that means. She’s an expert at urban street wear, commonly wear nice jackets and coats, ripped jeans, jean shorts, and an expansive variety of logo t-shirts. Many are surprised to find out that she gets most of her wardrobe from the thrift store. She has long, raven black hair that she often does up in a ponytail.

Shiba

♦ - Quirks/Hobbies

I think that Shiba Love the Outdoors. You know how in Jane Austen novels, there’s always That Guy who wants to go shooting all the time, or otherwise just tromp around? Or Mustrum Ridcully from Discworld? Anyway, that was the Shiba back when they were noble, and now that they are Disgraced, they are just outdoors, all the time. They used to have an Elegant Rukongai Estate, but Kuukaku sold it off and now just builds various Arm Houses.

They love campfires. They love fishing. They love riding boars. It is Shiba tradition to know various kinds of trees and the constellations and how to orienteer. Isshin has tried to take his kids camping many times and generally comes off as an incompetent fool because all his knowledge in this area only applied to Soul Society.

The Kurosaki kids are very much city dwellers, but I feel like if they got to have a lengthy visit to the Rukon, they would just absolutely thrive running, jumping, climbing trees. Yuzu would attract a Totoro within hours.

Miyako was Seireitei born-and-bred, and the first time Kaien had her out to the family estate, she was up to her knees in the lake, trying to catch frogs, and Kaien fell double in love with her.

☯ - Likes/Dislikes

Shibas like: Loud things, also being loud. Parties. Food, and lots of it (with a special affection for breakfast foods.) THEIR FRIENDS. Working really hard and then chilling a well-deserved chill.

Dislikes: People who talk big and then fail to live up to it. Doing things based on societal pressure. Dressing in a way that does not match their personal preferences. PEOPLE WHO HURT THEIR PRECIOUS FRIENDS. The Central 46.

▼ - Childhood

Hi, are you ready for Sobbing Hours? I think that Isshin was an only child and that he hung out with the main branch a lot when he was young. I think Isshin is somewhat older than Kaien, and often treated him as a younger sibling, both good-naturedly bullying him, but also teaching him About the Heart and other important Shiba values. In other words, I think that the way Kaien treated Rukia is based on the way his favorite cousin treated him and what goes around comes around.

Shihouin

☮ - Friendship, ▼ - Childhood, ♒ - Cooking/Food

I’m gonna kinda do these one go, but I’ll touch on all of them.

For all of Yoruichi’s freewheeling independence, I think that the Shihouin is a very strict clan, and even though she has a lot of power, she was raised with a lot of high expectations.

One of the nicknames for the Shihouin Clan is the House of Godly Gears, a name I would have dropped approximately 100,000 times if I were writing Bleach, and one of its duties is to be the caretakers of various artifacts and relics of Soul Society. We know that the Fon Clan is one of their vassal families whose duty is to support the Shihouin with regards to the Onmitsukidou, but I like to think that the Urahara are a different vassal family whose duty is to be artifacers and experts on the use of magical objects. At some point, Yoruichi describes Urahara as a “childhood friend”, but I think they probably met more toward their late childhood, like tweens or early teens. I don’t think Urahara is particularly high ranking in his own clan, but I think he was regarded as very talented, and was selected at an early age and groomed to be Yoruichi’s Chief Science Advisor of sorts, and they became besties (which was not necessarily looked well upon by Yoruichi’s family and more senior retainers, leading them to them building secret hideouts and such).

I think Yoruichi found her own parents very cold and strict, and wanted to be a different kind of Clan Head. I think she struck up a friendship with Kuukaku when they were adolescents, and she was really influenced by a lot of Shiba values-- namely putting your own ass on the line for the things you care about, rather than hiding behind the secret forces but also sucking the marrow out of life. I think this is also part of what was behind her constant trolling of Byakuya, and even if not as much sunk in as she hoped, a lot more sunk in than Byakuya hoped (see: Byakuya’s penchant for getting attached to Rukongai dirtbags)

Since Yoruichi was the Clan Head when she vanished, I assume that means that her parents had died, and so she was a parent figure to Yuushirou. I think she tried to raise him with close family bonds she saw at the Shiba, rather than what she herself was raised with, and that she took a personal hand in his upbringing-- playing with him, reading him bedtime stories, etc. I think that when she was banished, leaving Yuushirou behind was her biggest regret (sorry, Soi Fon, but at least you’re old enough to take care of yourself).

Eating! I think that Yoruichi has tremendous spiritual energy, and she needs to eat a lot to maintain it, but she was constantly criticized for eating in an ignoble/unladylike fashion, and she ended up with some disordered eating in her youth, in that she was often hungry, but wouldn’t eat enough because she got very neurotic about being watched. Urahara used to bring her snacks when they would meet. After she gets banished, she starts eating a lot as a comfort mechanism, because using one trauma to fight another trauma is a time-honored tradition. Both she and Urahara are just pathetic at cooking. They both love Tessai’s cooking, but he cooks very healthy stuff, so sometimes she and Kisuke have secret junk food binges. She will not admit it, but her favorite food is really cheap, corn-based cat crunchies (eaten in cat form).

Isshin was a ridiculously lenient parent. At least to Ichigo. He’d never put many limits on his oldest child, no matter what shit Ichigo got up to. So when he had firmly said no tattoos, most people would have assumed that Ichigo would have agreed, as one of the few requests of his father.

Those people did not know Ichigo very well.

(Real quick, special thanks to my little brother for helping me out with coming up with these characters!)

What is Regina’s?

Regina’s is a bar that sits in the back alley side of a small city, owned by a burly man with a passion for drag and bartending named Regina. The joint is known throughout the city for employing young men with feminine physiques.

Nicholas “Nicky” Collins

Age: 22

Height: 5’4

Weight: 115 Pounds

Faceclaim: Hideri Kanzaki (Blend S)

Background: Born with a rare medical condition that stunted his growth in his teenage years, Nicholas was often picked on in high school for his short stature and his shoulder length hair, often getting called “girly” and a “man slut”. Nicholas found solitude in painting, which after graduating, he decided would be his career field of choice. After a few years of saving up money, he moved out of his parents’s house and to the city so he could go to art school. However, being a flat broke college student, he needed to quickly find a job. Luckily for him, Regina’s was hiring. Regina quickly hired Nicholas after admiring the young mans feminine qualities. Despite hating being taken in for “looking feminine”, Nicholas (now nicknamed Nicky) accepts the job since he needs the cash. All of the employees at Regina’s are asked to act “cute” and “flirtatious”, but Nicky usually drops the act when Regina’s not paying attention. He’s also somewhat of an insomniac, since he usually stays up studying or working on projects for his classes after getting home late from work.

Annabelle Smith

Background: Annabelle Smith was married to her high school sweetheart at nineteen years of age. By the time she was twenty-six, she had given birth to her fifth child. As they both get closer to thirty, she and her husband grow increasingly distant. Her husband works an office job, and when he comes home, he sits in his chair, turns the T.V. on, and cracks open a beer. Meanwhile, Annabelle is left all day to cook, clean, and take care of the kids. Annabelle and her husband barely speak to each other anymore. They’re lucky to still even sleep in the same bed together. On the outside, Annabelle says that she full heartedly believes that all women should get married and cater to their husbands and families, but deep down she’s bitter, she hates what her marriage is making her becoming. When she was a little girl, she had dreams of becoming a princess, travel the world, and marrying a dashingly handsome prince. Suffice to say, she feels as if she never got her happy ending. She typically walks into Regina’s under the excuse that she was taking an evening stroll and needs a quick drink of water, but really, she comes in to get a few shots of something to distract herself from the headache of having to take care of five bratty children. That, and she thinks the boys are attractive, at least in comparison to her husband.

Emily Dakota

Age: 24

Height: 5’6

Weight: 130 Pounds

Faceclaim: Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul)

Background: Emily often walks around trying to feel like she’s better than everyone else, however, she also constantly questions the point of her experience. Despite some of her nihilistic feelings, Emily is very politically active on her social media, and is often found attending local rallies and indie rock concerts. She especially believes in overthrowing any form of patriarchy, stemming from a rocky relationship with her father and multiple unwanted sexual advances made on her during her time in college. Despite this, she enjoys coming to Regina’s since she finds cross dressing to be “cool” and “progressive”. She also likes to vape for some reason.

Nancy Hatchling

Age: 30

Height: 5’8

Weight: 135 Pounds

Faceclaim: Irina Jelavić (Assassination Classroom)

Background: When she first graduated from high school, Nancy had dreams of being the greatest actress the world had ever known. Twelve years later, and things didn’t exactly turn out the way she wanted them too. She can’t exactly recall when everything went wrong, or maybe she just doesn’t want to, but at some point along the line, she made the drastic career change from acting to a high school teacher. She often comes by Regina’s to drown in her sorrows, and to procrastinate on grading papers. Even Regina himself warns Nancy that she might be drinking too much for her own good, but at the end of the day, a customer is a customer.

Marisa “XO DEATH” Deshawn

Age: 21

Height: 5’7

Weight: 130 Pounds

Shakstimtar

Age: Unkown (But it’s extremely old)

Height: 6’6

Weight: 240 Pounds

Faceclaim: Villeta Nu (Code Geass)

Background: Many ages ago, Shakstimtar ruled over the lands, and was worshipped by people far and wide. But as the centuries dragged, many a people began to stop believing in Shakstimtar, until eventually, she was mostly forgotten. Left with very little to do now that she’s no longer worshiped, Shakstimtar often grows bored with her existence. Once a year, she descends from the heavens in search of entertainment, said entertainment being in the form of a bar called Regina’s.
