i'm actually still not quite over the fact that oveta and korahi's stories continuously overlap until they finally cross paths in that market. that they don't even say anything to each other, they just smile from their different stalls. oveta rolls her eyes bc kova is being ridiculous and korahi bites her lip so she doesn't laugh and it's so simple, so peaceful, so fucking mundane. they have no idea who the they are to each other. oveta, the girl who killed the queen that destroyed korahi's people, her family. proof that someone tried to fight for them. korahi, the very creature that oveta was almost executed for defending, the push that became a shove to build her own kingdom and write her own laws. proof that nakia failed. but for just that moment, that blip of time, they were just two girls sharing a silent joke, and everything was okay.

You are the first women to serve...Never forget it...You have given up comfortable homes, highly paid positions, leisure. You have taken off silk and put on khaki. And all for essentially the same reason-you have a debt and a date. A debt to democracy, a date with destiny. You do not come into a Corps that has an established tradition. You must make your own. But in making your own, you do have one tradition-the integrity of all the brave American women of all time who have loved their country. You, as you gather here, are living history...From now on you are soldiers, defending a free way of life. Your performance will set the standard of the Corps. You will live in the spotlight. Even though the lamps of experience are dim, few if any mistakes will be permitted you.

COL. OVETA CULP HOBBY // POLITICIAN
“She was an American government official and businesswoman who served as the first United States secretary of health, education, and welfare from 1953 to 1955. A member of the Republican Party, Hobby was the second woman ever to serve in a presidential cabinet. She also served as the first director of the Women's Army Corps from 1942 to 1945, and was sequentially editor, publisher and chair of the board of the Houston Post. She entered public service when President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed her administrator of the Federal Security Agency, soon after reorganized as a federal executive department, known then as Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and Hobby became its first head.”

“While women were encouraged to enter the paid labor force, wartime changes in women’s behavior aroused concern. Nowhere was this ambivalence more obvious than in the military itself. In a major change from the past, women entered every part of military service except combat. One thousand civilian female pilots joined the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), 140,000 women joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), 100,000 entered the navy as WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), and others enlisted with the marines and coast guard. A few were physicians, and many were nurses. Although a small number of women held dramatic and highly publicized positions in formerly all-male areas such as aviation, most served in administrative, clerical, and communications jobs. Occupations in the military reflected the gender-based divisions in the civilian labor force.
Nevertheless, the military made great efforts to recruit women during the war. Oveta Culpa Hobby, director of the Women’s Army Corps, proclaimed women “are carrying on the glorious tradition of American womanhood. They are making history! …This is a war which recognizes no distinctions between men and women.” To the female Americans she hoped to recruit, she said, “This is YOUR war.” Women of “excellent character” who could pass an intelligence test could join the WACs, provided they had no children under the age of 14. Healthy, unmarried women with no dependents under the age of 18 could enlist in the WAVES. A WAVE who married might remain in the service, if she had finished basic training and as long as her husband was not in the service. The birth of a child brought an “honorable discharge.”
Although the armed forces offered women alternatives to full time homemaking, it was virtually impossible to combine a job in the military with family life. Nevertheless, the armed services presented the image of the female recruit as very “feminine” and domestically inclined. Every effort was made to dispel prevailing notions that military work would make women “masculine” or ruin their moral character. A guidebook for women in the armed services and war industries, for example, included a photograph of a young WAVE with a caption that described her as “pretty as her picture… in the trim uniform that enlisted U.S. Navy WAVES will wear in winter… smartly-styled, comfortable uniforms… with a soft rolled brim hat.”
…At the same time that women’s war work was given a domestic aura, domestic tasks gained new patriotic purpose. Millions of women were involved in volunteer work during the war, and much of it involved traditional skills such as canning, saving cooking fats, and making household goods last longer. Much as homemakers in the depression recognized the importance of their domestic skills for the homemakers of the war years saw their work as contributing to the success of the war emergency.
Women contributed to the war effort, but not at the expense of their domestic duties. Traditional marriage was still expected for them. It was, in fact, one of the primary reasons given for fighting the war. The walls of barracks were decorated with “pinups,” photographs of women in alluring poses reminding the men why they were fighting. Movie star Betty Grable was the most popular pinup, not because she was the most sexy and glamorous, but because she had a rather wholesome look. Grable came to inspire the girl back home and the “American Way of Life” that inspired the men to fight.”

"Women who stepped up were measured as citizens of the nation, not as women. This was a people's war, and everyone was in it." – Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby, first director of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) A dedicated civil servant and lifelong advocate for women in American public life, Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby helped open the door to women serving in uniform in the active components of the U.S. Army. Culp Hobby’s career in national defense began in 1941, when she became the leader of the War Department Bureau of Public Relations’ Women’s Interest Section. Culp Hobby served in this role until 1942, when she was appointed to lead the newly created Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), an auxiliary branch of the Army meant to fill manpower gaps in the Army as the nation mobilized for the Second World War. When the WAAC was renamed the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in July 1943 and made into a formal active component of the Army, Culp Hobby retained her leadership role and received a Colonel’s commission, becoming the highest-ranking woman in Army history up to that point. As director of the WAC, Colonel Culp Hobby worked tirelessly to create a professional, model organization of female soldiers to prove that women could contribute the American war effort if given the opportunity. The 150,000 WAC’s that served during WWII distinguished themselves through their efficiency and good conduct, freeing the equivalent of seven divisions of male soldiers to join the fight on the front lines against fascism and tyranny. Culp Hobby became the first woman in Army history to earn the Distinguished Service Medal, receiving the prestigious decoration for her contribution to American victory through her leadership of the WAC. After the war’s end she returned to civilian life, becoming a publishing mogul in her home state of Texas and eventually serving as the first Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1953 – 1955 (becoming the second woman in U.S. history to hold a position in the President’s Cabinet). #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #WAC #WW2 #WomensHistoryMonth #MilitaryHistory Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Army Recruiting Columbia, TN) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpilVrdOxFa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

idk there's something about oveta planning for days to kill nakia (her own aunty), sneaking into her room at night and poisoning her, watching her die slowly and painfully with a hand over her mouth so she can't cry out. leaving her covered in blood and bile, with her eyes wide open and unseeing.
vs.
killing a guard (she didn't even know his name), not exactly on impulse but still barely a plan, by bashing his face in as quickly as she could until they're both covered in his blood, and then she steals his clothes and his keys and his sword and then. then she cleans his face, and she tells him she's sorry, and she kisses his eyelids.

the splintering!!!!!
(im never shutting up about this series btw)
i offer you Oveta and Mika's first meeting <3
--
“Just give me what I asked for,” She pressed, pleased when her voice and sword remained steady. “And we can part ways without any mess.”
The man only continued to watch her, apparently in no rush to comply with her demands.
The creak of leather and hiss of steel were her only warnings before Oveta’s sword was wrenched from her grasp, a sharp and sudden blow to her sternum sending her stumbling back onto her rear with the wind knocked from her lungs.
A larger sword, worn but cared for, glinted in the sunlight as the tip dipped towards the soft skin of her throat. The man seemed somewhere closer to amused now, his head tilted slightly. “You should be more careful of strangers,” He offered. “You don’t know what they’re capable of.”
Oveta shot him a dark look, heart thumping against her ribs even as she thought of a dimly lit bedroom and the sticky wetness of blood on her palm. Did this man know what she was capable of?
Would he believe her to be a murderer?

Oveta Keyboard Review – Best Laser Keyboard?
Technology is getting more advanced by leaps and bounds, and we use many different devices every day without even realizing it. Some of these are mobile phones, computers, tablets, and TVs.
However, it can be hard to use the tiny keyboard on a mobile phone or to type with the TV remote to search for content. Even using the keyboard on a tablet can be uncomfortable.
What is Oveta Keyboard?
Oveta Keyboardis a Bluetooth-enabled laser keyboard that you can use on virtually any device, from your desktop computer to your next-generation mobile. It is a practical and useful tool in any situation.
Every time the operating systems of smartphones and tablets are more powerful, and allow us to perform increasingly complex tasks. Thanks to the fact that Oveta Keyboard can be used as a mouse or as a laser keyboard, we can use it to write or create designs directly.
Features
Connection via Bluetooth technology
Compatible with the following versions or later: Windows XP, Windows Phone 7, iOS4, Android 2,1, and Mac OS X are all supported.
A USB cable can be used to connect the projector to the device.
Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery
More than 150 hours of autonomy is possible.
When projected, the keyboard measures 24cmx10cm.
Because of its small size (7.8 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm), it is easy to transport.
It is not recommended for use on brilglass surfaces.
The package contains a projector, one USB cable, a manual, and an installation guide.
What did we like the most?
I didn’t think alaser keyboard would be handy, but in the case of the tablet, it’s fantastic; you can write quickly and comfortably. The TV is another device that can be used extensively; usually, we do not have a keyboard, and using the remote is inconvenient; however, with the projector, you can write without difficulty; however, the TV must have a Bluetooth connection.
Things to consider before buying a wireless laser keyboard
1.  Wireless Connection
One of the most important things to consider when buying a wireless laser keyboard is the wireless connection. There are two main types of wireless connections: Bluetooth and RF. Bluetooth is a newer technology typically more expensive but offers a more stable connection and lower latency. RF is an older technology that is less expensive but can be more prone to interference.
2.  Battery Life
Another important consideration is battery life. Most wireless laser keyboards will require batteries, and you will want to ensure that the keyboard has a long battery life. Some keyboards may come with a charging dock or cable, which can help prolong the life of the batteries.
3.  Keyboard Layout
The layout of the keyboard is also an important consideration. You will want to ensure that the keyboard has a layout that is comfortable for you. Some people prefer a traditional QWERTY layout, while others prefer a more compact one. Some ergonomic keyboards have been designed to reduce strain on the hands and wrists.
4.  Key Travel Distance
The key travel distance is the distance the keys on the keyboard travel when pressed. This is an essential consideration for people who frequently type, as it can help to reduce fatigue. Keyboards with shorter key travel distances are typically more expensive, but they can be worth the investment for people who do a lot of typing.
5.  Weight and Size
The weight and size of the keyboard are also important considerations, especially if you plan on traveling with the keyboard frequently. You will want to ensure that the keyboard is not too heavy or bulky to transport it easily. Additionally, some people prefer smaller keyboards because they take up less space on a desk or in a backpack.
6  Connectivity
Another factor to consider is connectivity. Most wireless laser keyboards use Bluetooth technology to connect to your computer or other devices. However, some models also have a USB receiver that you can plug into your device. If you plan on using the keyboard with multiple devices, you will want to ensure that it is compatible with all of them.
