Your thoughts on how the death of Lincoln was and still impact octavia ?
My favorite thing to do lately is to let asks sit for days on end, and then answer them in a fit of inspiration at four in the morning. Sorry about that!
This is such a big question, though, which is part of why I had to wait for inspiration to strike.
It’s not a stretch at all to say that Lincoln’s death had a bigger impact on Octavia than anything else she’s ever been through. I think perhaps that the only events that might define her more are her status as Girl Under the Floor, and the way being discovered destroys the Blakes’ lives. But beyond that origin, which is basically the formative Octavia Blake moment, Lincoln’s death is the most important thing.
It’s been said that there was a different storyline intended for Lincoln in s3, most of which got cut. This is part of what led to Ricky Whittle’s abrupt departure - Ricky was upset with the way Lincoln’s storyline had been reduced, and when he complained, he was bullied offset by Jason Rothenberg. I am always, always going to be curious about what Lincoln’s story was meant to be in s3, because it completely changes the trajectory of Octavia’s story.
One of my favorite acting moments of s3, of which there are many, is Octavia’s reaction to Lincoln’s death, because we see her collapse in real time, and then steel and harden the little pieces of herself that remain. She doesn’t cry out, although she clearly wants to. She doesn’t attack then, against all of her instincts. This bottled up rage and grief ignites for the first time when she beats up a bound Bellamy - and it guides her throughout her downward spiral. Every cruel thing she said, every choice she made for other people, every burden she bore and sacrifice she made, it all comes from that molten steel inside of her, which all goes back to the moment when Lincoln is unjustly executed in front of her very eyes.
That is the moment everything changes from Octavia. That is the moment she goes from being Bellamy’s Little Sister to a major player of her own right. Without the comfort and stability of Lincoln’s love, and burning alive inside with this barely contained anger at the world that took it away, she becomes Skairipa, Osleya, and finally, Blodreina.
I don’t know what would have happened to her if Lincoln had survived the series. If he was still here, I don’t think she would have ever risen to the same horrifying, exhilarating heights, or crashed so hard. He was her anchor. Without him, she became untethered.
I’m still pretty salty about how the show handled her dealing with this, to be honest. While I admired the aesthetics of Octavia’s little mushroom trip, I ultimately found her second showdown with Pike rattled me more than it satisfied me. It does seem that those moments in her proverbial “mindscape” were meant, on some level, to put her grief and rage over Lincoln, and everything she did as a result of his execution, to rest. (I absolutely think Pike deserved some sort of retribution for Lincoln’s death, so this episode left a bad taste in my mouth, but that’s more personal opinion than anything else, and another rant for another day.)
As we enter the final season, I’m certain Lincoln will still be an important part of Octavia’s history and character. I’d be surprised and disappointed if he wasn’t. One of my ideal endings for Octavia is a world where she can teach Trigedasleng to others, like Lincoln taught it to her. That way she can always stand as the bridge between the two worlds, and she can honor him without more bloodshed. I’m not holding my breath, but I think it’d be a satisfying way to think of her spending the rest of her life, once everything is settled.
Thanks for the ask, anon. 💛

10 for the salty asks :)
Thank you, love! 💛
10. Most disliked arc? Why?
Octavia’s arc in s4.
Look, the aesthetic was iconic. Her first, fearsome nickname - Skairipa - her “get shit done” ponytail, her constantly cold expression. Her brief, albeit random af love affair with Ilian. The way she wins the Conclave mostly by hiding and making herself seem like less of a target - more or less how she made it this far in life, period, up to that point in the narrative. I’m down for all of that.
But her arc just doesn’t make sense. The narrative has no idea how to feel about Octavia - is she a ruthless killing machine, driven only by bloodlust, or is she humanity’s one and only last hope for survival, a pure-hearted hero? Because the season shows her as both, and never quite decides which it believes is the truth.
She goes from being a pissed-off renegade assassin who is shamed and more or less ostracized for her brutality and disregard for human life (which in itself is a reaction to the trauma she’s experienced, and the values of her two cultures), to living isolated in a cave/on a farm with Ilian for like, a week, only to have choosing the better option - peace, non-violence, thinking ahead - blow up in her face.
She’s attacked, 3-on-1, and of course, she falls back on her killer instincts to survive. The others all end up dead, and Octavia is discovered by a horrified Ilian, covered in blood and showing no remorse for what she’s done.
We’d think this was another low point in her narrative, but it’s not treated that way. It’s scary, yes, but it’s also shown as inevitable.
And then, Octavia makes her way back home, says she’s “here for the war,” and is immediately rewarded with the opportunity to kill for Skaikru by representing them in the Conclave - indeed, it seems as if she were born for this role, as if this is her destiny, as she is the only person in Skaikru who understands the way the grounders fight, who stands a chance of competing against them without a gun.
She wins the Conclave, mostly courtesy of Luna (see more about this theory here, I think it’s excellent, it helped me come to terms with Luna’s ending) - and is rewarded yet again for her participation in all that violence by becoming Osleya, aka basically the new Commander. She makes a ton of decisions that impact the lives of the rest of humanity, just in the last few episodes of s4, let alone what happens when the bunker is sealed.
I suppose, within the crazy, messed-up morality of The 100 universe, her arc makes sense. Octavia is who she is, and became who she had to be, because of how she was raised, what kind of society she stepped into the moment she was freed from lifelong imprisonment, and how violence in general is revered and rewarded in this universe.
But it was a weird direction for her arc to go, and it’s never quite sat well with me. There’s a ton of moments with her in s4 that I love, stripped of their narrative context, but I can’t think about the greater plot or my eyes start to cross.
I appreciate your ask so much! Thank you!!
