what's funny to me about the whole "oh dazai was definitely leaving sigma behind" thing is. even if you were to say that dazai has no care for anyone ever (he very much does regardless of the depth of his bond with a person but that's a whole different conversation that gets me heated so i won't go there here) do you sincerely think he wouldn't at least TRY to wake up the one person in the decay of angels who has the info he needs (which he might not even be aware of because he wasn't in the ROOM when sigma took fyodor's hand and passed out) and who he has formed a fairly civil relationship with. "oh but he already defeated fyodor—" you don't know that. none of us know that. and even if it's the case dazai is SET on finding out what fyodor's ability is/was. he literally told sigma that his plan was to kill him and have sigma take the information from his corpse. and let's say that he hasn't guessed that sigma took fyodor's memories and that finding out what his ability is/was after the explotion is impossible— why would he fucking abandon sigma like that. dazai is a lot of bad things, but he's not that cruel. and if you think he is then you've been manipulated by a fictional character i don't know what to tell you

im just thinking about texting osamu wishing him a happy holidays.

he’s your former employer who signed your most recent paystub. you’ve moved on now to better opportunities. onigiri miya closed down for an evening yet still full and warm and bright with employees rejoicing the change in your life and mourning you leaving the team.

and you’re out with your friends. lights have been strung up overnight and the city feels different. it’s lively, beautiful. your friends are hilarious and yet, as you pass by a restaurant that serves nothing remotely close to onigiri, you yearn.

it must be the mop cleaner they use, you reason. that familiar scent is unmistakable.

the night goes on with karaoke and fried goodness and gifts exchanging. you find yourself tucked in the back of a cab close to midnight with your friend’s mouth resting right above your ear, bringing in small snores.

to pass the time, you scroll on your phone through old photos. there’s your friends who’d taken your device captive while you went to the restroom, a selfie of you all in front of a sprinkling fountain. a smile adorns your lips until you scroll too far.

the sight of a thick armed man beside you as you blow out congratulatory candles makes you yearn. it’s cold all too sudden and not even scooting closer to your friend for just a smidgen more of body warmth can soothe you.

and life truly is good. you are so thankful for the fun you’ve had and for the impenetrable routine of changing seasons that you must say something.

you pull up osamu’s contact and the history alone shows your previous relationship. it’s littered with shift requests and warnings on your end that you’re running late. never did it go deeper because that relationship has been established.

but you’ve gained distance and for once, it’s a good thing. his last correspondence was one week ago.

i’ll miss having ya but i know you’re amazing. good luck out there

you take that luck and hope the he responds in kind.

odasaku lives au in which dazai manages to convince oda not to walk to his death and they both decide to run away from the mafia together. dazai also decides to kidnap chuuya because "I need my dog with me, of course", and he doesn't know how to tell him he wants chuuya with him.

oda just sighs deeply, because he knows he is going to spend his life looking after those two.

yet, as he looks upon chuuya and dazai, two of the most feared people, curled against each other, chuuya's mouth open wide and slightly snoring and dazai's head holding the other's shirt tightly, he can't help but think he is glad he is alive, after all.

he lays his tan coat over the two boys and smiles.

What annoys me the most about this trend of "vilifying vs woobifying complex characters" is that it removes any sense of agency these characters have. It's always either "ohh this character is the worst person in existence and none of their reasons matter and they don't *deserve* redemption" or "this poor sad baby only did it cause x,y,z people were cruel to them" like. Yes. The choices a character makes are inherently based in their environment and circumstance. But they are also responsible for those choices. Cause they could have chosen differently! But they didn't! It's a balance! You can hate a character without ignoring the circumstances that made them, and you can love a character without taking their agency or responsibility for the choices they made away from them. It's not about "deserving" redemption it's about if the choices they make now are better than before.

That said, Nakahara Chuuya has done nothing wrong, ever, in his life.

Gender swap fantasy Soukoku story:

Dazai is a peasant and the librarian in a small village. She dabbled in magic and uses it to help around the library. (She was once a very prolific witch with many enemy's)

Chuuya is a run away princess who works as a mercenary.

Someone places a hit on Dazai's head and Chuuya tracks her down with the intention of killing her. For some reason Chuuya doesn't quite understand she can't bring herself to kill Dazai. Maybe because of the fact she seems so different from the stories or pure curiosity. It's not something that really matters anymore. Somehow Chuuya ends up befriending the charming ex-witch current librarian. Chuuya falls for this woman who as annoying as she is had clearly been trying to change since her time as that deadly witch that haunts many peoples nightmares.

Chuuya doesn't realize she's in love for quite some time. No, it's not till Dazai saves Chuuya from a bunch of guards and bounty hunters trying to bring Chuuya back to her kingdom that Chuuya realizes she's head over heels for the woman.

Soon word gets back to them that Dazai is now a wanted criminal by decree of Chuuya's home kingdom and upon capture will be publicly executed. There is also a high price on her head. Chuuya in order to save Dazai returns home and agrees to take upon her duties as princess once more if and only if Dazai is left alone. Her parents agree and the Bounty is lifted.

Not long after Chuuya has taken her duties back up Dazai shows up at the palace begging for an audience with the princess. While her parents are hesitant Chuuya begs to see her again. Once they relent and Chuuya is allowed to see her they have a rather tearful reunion. Dazai asks why Chuuya would return, knowing how much Chuuya hated everything that came with being princess, and Chuuya confesses. Dazai obviously reciprocates and turns to Chuuya's parents begging for a chance to court their daughter. They agree and Chuuya and Dazai are wed before the year is over.

Me: "Yeah I've been listening to the audiobook I'm Glad My Mom Died and it's been pretty good so far" Friend: "That book is so sad tho"

5 minutes later

Me: "Look I just read this one and it was pretty good!" *points to My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness* Friend: "That looks like it's a pretty depressing book" Me: "It is but it's really good :D"

Another 5 minutes pass

Me: "Alright I'm going to buy this book!" Friend: "What's the name?" Me: "The summer Hikaru died" Friend: "WHY ARE YOU ONLY READING SAD BOOKS!?"

#then i was like 'hold on i did read something cute recently' and I pointed to a sign of aff/ection lol #i didn't notice the pattern until she pointed it out #to top it off i almost bought a book by osamu daz/ai and that's when it clicked and I was like 'omg she's right'#anyways listening to the audiobook got me in a reading rush #i normally read manga since that's what I like and it's the easiest for me to read #i just get distracted pretty easily when it's a normal book lol #but i've been wanting to listen to more audiobooks while I clean #there are so many available on spotify for free so might as well #but listening to i'm glad my mom died was pretty easy to me i really liked it #i was listening to the invisible life of add/ie larue but I got a little lost so that is a book I do need to read physically #i needed something easier to listen to so i put on the love hy/pothesis lol #it's been entertaining so far #my friend did tell me some parts are pretty cringy but that overall it's a fun book #i'm not even halfway through the book but I do get some of the criticisms the book gets good and bad #i've been wanting to read more for a while now so LET'S GOOOOO

Been thinkin about a Poe, Ranpo, and Dazai trio friendship lately…

(Because I needed to bring some happiness to my life. Please I can’t read the manga I can’t find it online anywhere and I got my info through tumblr screenshots can someone please tell me what exactly tf is going on —)

Detective Gang™

They’re all so smart but also all dumbasses at the same

90% of the time, Poe has the singular shared Braincell of Common Sense

4% of the time the braincell is lost and Dazai is leading the investigation to find it. 4% of the time the braincell is still lost and Ranpo has to take over the investigation to find it

(2% is shared between Dazai and Ranpo. They’re smart, but they have no common sense at all compared to Poe. Who is also lacking in the common sense department btw, because a single braincell is still just a singular braincell)

Listen, working together they could solve ten cases in a second flat. But at the same time, them working together to shop at a store to get weekly groceries would result in a lifelong ban for all of them (at least until Poe bribed the store lol)

Any time the trio go anywhere, ever, Dazai is third wheeling in the background of Ranpoe and loves being dramatic about it. He constantly walks approximately five feet away from where Ranpo and Poe are hanging out to make his point more clear, takes his phone out, takes a pictures, and definitely captions it with something stupid to send to them later

Example:

Dazai: *sends an image of when they were all hanging out at the aquarium together. Ranpo and Poe are holding hands while standing in front of a touch tank, facing away from the camera and into the water. Dazai has the most disgruntled expression his face has the capability to create*

Dazai: Come to the aquarium, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.

Ranpo: Shut up. You got to touch a stingray of course you had fun

Poe: plus I bought you that 6 foot squid at the giftshop

Ranpo: Yeah, Poe bought you that squid. Who couldn’t have fun after that?!

Dazai: excuse you, “that squid” has a NAME!!!! Her name is Squidwardette

(Poe, Ranpo, and Dazai def fight over custody of said 6-foot Squidwardette on the weekends)

((“I bought her. Isn’t that like bringing her into the world? I should have custody on the weekends.”

“HEY! YOU DO NOT GET WEEKENDS! That’s leaving me with all of the parent responsibilities on weekdays while you have fun on weekends! It’s not fair!”

“Well, me and Poe are a couple and can provide more stability in her life! What do you bring to the table? Being a sad single parent who can’t even get lai—”

“DON’T YOU DARE FINISH THAT SENTENCE!!!!!!”))

Despite the teasing, they all equally respect each other so much.

Dazai canonically respects Ranpo due to his intelligence not being dependent on an ability. He meets Poe and learns that A) his ability is not linked to his intelligence but to things he writes and B) he was almost able to defeat Ranpo. Dazai also canonically is not able to follow Ranpo’s thought process and keep up with him in certain parts of detective cases.

(He probably saw Poe as just another person to provoke and get a rise out of in the beginning since Poe’s so introverted around strangers. But then Dazai witnessed one of Poe’s… ahem. Passionate declarations of how great he is and how he's going to beat Ranpo one day and how he and Ranpo are the GREATEST RIVALS to ever exist despite being good friends and Dazai thought to himself. Oh. Cool. This one’s insane as well. Nice.) (Also, Ranpo has good taste in men)

(And then they were good friends ever since)

Ranpo just respects the two people who can actually keep up with him. And that he can get along with. Those are basically the two requirements for gaining Ranpo’s respect.

Poe respects anyone who Ranpo respects. His respect grew even more when, after Ranpo had finished solving yet another one of his manuscripts, Dazai asked to read one (because he wanted to make sure Poe was actually worth his salt and not just lying). Dazai of course solves it (though taking longer than Ranpo). Poe was probably a little bit upset at first since yet another person was able to best him, but quickly reassured himself it was just because it was a quick mystery he wrote up since Ranpo wanted one, and not the book he had spent 6 whole years writing like Ranpo had solved the first time. After getting over his shock, he definitely respected Dazai way more than before.

They would all help bail another of their group out if they got into trouble.

Poe: literally bailing them all out of prison

Ranpo: will literally bail from Poe and Dazai if he thinks their current weekend plans are too stupid. Don’t worry, he’ll come back later when they inevitably get into trouble with some sort of plan to get them out

Dazai: can talk his way out of almost any situation. If he can’t talk his way out, he can always turn to murder

Poe, Ranpo, and Dazai would all (and actually have) help each other hide a body, no questions asked. I will not elaborate.
