DC OC | Solana's Heritage & Helioas

I'm finally talking about Helioas and its relation to Solana's heritage

Let's start with the basics of Solana Banks's heritage: she's half human. She feels a disconnect from her mother's side because she was raised in Helioas for most of her life and also the fact that her mother's family didn't even know she existed until a few years ago.

Her full name is Princess Solana Phoenixia Selemaine Aerius. Her mother Lucille named her Solana because of her blonde hair and the sunburst birthmark on her back. She's used to being called that instead of Solana Banks.

But to get a deeper meaning of her mixed kid dilemma, let's take a look into Helioas.

Helioas is the alternate dimension where Solana hails from. It has one sun and two moons-- one major and one minor. The major moon is called Selemaine and the minor moon is called Ilsaria.

Much like Koriand'r, Solana's people are descended from animals. In her case it's birds, namely the phoenix. Many Helioasans have intricate tattoos that can transform into wings. Every Helioasan has different wings; Solana has more avian wings while her father had angelic ones. Their feathers range from red to gold with many members of the royal family having orange and gold ones.

Helioas is mostly desert but has a few rivers. As a result, river gods are some of the most worshipped alongside the sun goddess Rasina. One of the river deities is Rasina's own sister-in-law, Orsha.

Helioasans are darker skinned with dark eyes and bright or dark colored hair. Yoja, Solana's father, has red hair while his mother had blonde hair; which is whom Solana gets her hair color from.

Helioasan culture is very matriarchal with the queen being the center of the government. The queen has the final say in all matters both political and social. The king also plays a vital role, which includes the overseeing of religious holidays, domestic affairs, etc. So if Solana were to return home, she'd become the ruler of Helioas by birthright. Women have a very high social and political standing in their society, especially when it comes to the upper class and aristocracy.

Helioasan noblewomen go through a rising ceremony, which is when they set out to become members of society. Noblemen are taught to court noblewomen of high-ranking clans using singing, dances, and gifts such as housemaking and cooking. One famous mating ritual is when a man makes a woman's bed after their wedding, which shows commitment, respect, and love.

Which is why when Solana walked in on Bart making her bed, she became embarrassed and told him she wasn't interested in mating him, which was awkward for everyone else.

Now back to Solana and her mixed kid trauma.

Solana exists between two different worlds: Helioas and Earth. As I mentioned before, Solana was raised on Helioas most of her life. She was raised with the same ideals and principles that other Helioasan royal women are raised by. She knows everyone on her father's side of the family.

She has very little knowledge of Earth through Lucille and even then finds it hard to adapt to the planet. But when her father is killed and Helioas is destroyed by Belladonna, she has to go to that place she has little knowledge of and spend the rest of her life there.

On Earth, she has trouble fitting in with the other kids. She gets made fun of for speaking in a formal manner, how she dresses, etc. Not to mention her powers. There's a major disconnect between her and her human counterparts, including her mother. Solana hasn't had to face some of the things Lucille has because of where she's from. She's not used to the kids in her class living in normal houses instead of grand palaces.

And that's what makes her feel isolated. Because she is quite literally the only one of her kind.

As soon as Hui Ying graduated high school, she knew it was party time. She immediately dyed her hair upon starting college.

School was not her forte, but weekday drinking was.

A few months into her junior year, she was trying to figure out if college really WAS for her. She'd drop into a nearby college bar and just talk it over with one of the bartenders, Berjes.

Hui Ying: "Thanks for listening...I know this is, like, your JOB to be here. God, I should tip you more. You're like a free therapist. You're, like, 22, too, right?"

Berjes: "Yeah...college wasn't really an option for me, though. But I don't really care for going. So, I get it. It's tough. But life's too short to do things you dread every day, right? You'll do whatever your heart tells you to do. You'll make the best decision you can for yourself. Believe that."

Hui Ying had a lot to think about. Li Hua, on the other hand, was not doing any thinking at all. All of her brain power went into a brand new sorority she couldn't afford called Orsha Frhum.
