I think every computer user needs to read this because holy fucking shit this is fucking horrible.
So Windows has a new feature incoming called Recall where your computer will first, monitor everything you do with screenshots every couple of seconds and "process that" with an AI.
Hey, errrr, fuck no? This isn't merely because AI is really energy intensive to the point that it causes environmental damage. This is because it's basically surveilling what you are doing on your fucking desktop.
This AI is not going to be on your desktop, like all AI, it's going to be done on another server, "in the cloud" to be precise, so all those data and screenshot? They're going to go off to Microsoft. Microsoft are going to be monitoring what you do on your own computer.
Now of course Microsoft are going to be all "oooh, it's okay, we'll keep your data safe". They won't. Let me just remind you that evidence given over from Facebook has been used to prosecute a mother and daughter for an "illegal abortion", Microsoft will likely do the same.
And before someone goes "durrr, nuthin' to fear, nuthin to hide", let me remind you that you can be doing completely legal and righteous acts and still have the police on your arse. Are you an activist? Don't even need to be a hackivist, you can just be very vocal about something concerning and have the fucking police on your arse. They did this with environmental protesters in the UK. The culture war against transgender people looks likely to be heading in a direction wherein people looking for information on transgender people or help transitioning will be tracked down too. You have plenty to hide from the government, including your opinions and ideas.
Again, look into backing up your shit and switching to Linux Mint or Ubuntu to get away from Microsoft doing this shit.

Bethesda Softworks will close Redfall developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi RUSH and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, as well as Alpha Dog Games and Roundhouse Studios, according to a companywide email sent out by Microsoft Gaming president of game content and studios Matt Booty this morning.
Full email
Today I’m sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.
To double down on these franchises and invest to build new ones requires us to look across the business to identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success. This reprioritization of titles and resources means a few teams will be realigned to others and that some of our colleagues will be leaving us.
Here are the changes going into effect:
Arkane Austin – This studio will close with some members of the team joining other studios to work on projects across Bethesda. Arkane Austin has a history of making impactful and innovative games and it is a pedigree that everyone should be proud of. Redfall‘s previous update will be its last as we end all development on the game. The game and its servers will remain online for players to enjoy and we will provide make-good offers to players who purchased the “Hero” downloadable content.
Alpha Dog Studios – This studio will also close. We appreciate the team’s creativity in bringing DOOM to new players. Mighty DOOM will be sunset on August 7 and we will be turning off the ability for players to make any purchases in the game.
Tango Gameworks – Tango Gameworks will also close. We are thankful for their contributions to Bethesda and players around the world. Hi-Fi RUSH will continue to be available to players on the platforms it is today.
Roundhouse Games – The team at Roundhouse Games will be joining ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS). Roundhouse has played a key role in many of our recent game launches and bringing them into ZOS to work on The Elder Scrolls Online will mean we can do even more to grow the world that millions of players call home.
With this consolidation of our Bethesda studio teams, so that we can invest more deeply in our portfolio of games and new IP, a small number of roles across select Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will also be eliminated.
Those whose roles will be impacted will be notified today, and we ask that you please treat your departing colleagues with respect and compassion. We will provide our full support to those who are impacted in today’s notifications and through their transitions, including severance benefits informed by local laws.
These changes are not a reflection of the creativity and skill of the talented individuals at these teams or the risks they took to try new things. I acknowledge that these changes are also disruptive to the various support teams across ZeniMax and Bethesda that bring our games to market. We are making these tough decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games.
Bethesda remains one of the key pillars of Xbox with a strong portfolio of amazing games and thriving communities. As we look to the future, there is an impressive line-up of games on the horizon. In 2024 alone we have Starfield “Shattered Space,” Fallout 76 “Skyline Valley,” Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and The Elder Scrolls Online‘s “Golden Road.” As we align our plans and resources to best set ourselves up for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams across Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios, and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well-positioned to build new IP, explore new game concepts, and expand on our existing franchises.

If you love video games and care at all about their preservation, watch and share the video, and make sure to visit Stopkillinggames.com to do something about it.
To try and sum up the video for those who don’t have the time: Ubisoft is a French company killing their video game “The Crew,” a game that needs online access to play, despite having plenty of single player content.
There will be no patch to make it playable offline. This is not a subscription based game. Ubisoft is breaking something you may have legally purchased.
France has some of the best consumer protection laws available. This is a chance to establish legal protections of games you own so that no company in France will be able to kill/destroy a game you legally own.
If this passes in France, gaming companies will basically be forced to not do this anymore worldwide. You have the chance to help get this taken to court, even if you are not French. There are even options if you never even owned the game. Do your part, please.
If there is no options for you to take, share the video, reblog the post, just getting the word out helps.

hey afaik this hasn't happened yet but don't feed my stuff into AIs, no matter what friendly neighbourhood corporation will put a silly hat on Crave (I routinely link to artists who can be paid to put Crave in the silly hat of your dreams). AI makes job searching, something that is already a Sisyphean nightmare, a billion times worse, and I am directly opposed to the idea of training a non sentient program (sentient probably wouldn't be better but as it is, "teach it to learn but not to think because then it might not spend 24 hours a day shitting out money" seems a little unethical) to shit out money for the most annoying people you can possibly think of. Chat bots, AI art, all of it could have a place in a better society that wasn't on pins and needles ready to exploit it in order to put people out of work, injure, maim, and steal.
This blog is unequivocally against the recreational use of AI, because it trains the AI to more robust which them allows for corporate and broad institutional misuse (because a company developing an AI doesn't care about generating fanfic for you for free, it cares about military and government contracts). AIs recognising human faces doesn't stop at making you into a silly painting, it actively harms people in war zones and at protests. AIs being able to recreate hyper realistic images from being trained on stolen art become propaganda machines for the system. At minimum, AIs being able to imitate human speech by being trained on dialogue and voice via writing will destroy jobs, if not something more insidious that it hasn't had the opportunity to showcase yet.
Stop hanging out with bots online.
