Rant and PSA: OCD

OCD culture is everyone assuming that it just means you're a "neat freak" or a "germaphobe" or that "you want things to be tidy and clean" or that it stands for "Obsessive Cleaning Disorder" when really OCD is an incredibly exhausting, draining, and stressful disorder that looks different for each individual person. i'm begging ppl to do your research, it's not that hard. also ppl need stop using OCD as an adjective, our brains are literally programmed to notice asymmetry and it's not just "things you don't like." the paper wasn't cut straight? don't say "can you fix that, i'm just so OCD abt things haha." you simply prefer to keep your office space organized and someone asks to borrow something? don't say "just make sure to put it back where you found it, i'm a little OCD abt that.”

personally i have checking, contamination, and “just right” OCD. i could have others but i’m not entirely sure what they might be. it’s such a draining disorder, and, quite honestly, it can be terrifying at times. information abt what OCD really is, is literally just one google search away. we aren’t here for you to use as an adjective and we aren’t here for you to assume we just like to clean. not every person with OCD has a type that forces them to clean, or be organized. my mom does, i do not. OCD is usually genetic but that does not mean that it manifests itself on the same ways between parent and child.
