OMGCP LoveFest: Favorite Canon Moment

For @omgcplovefest , Day 1. There are so may moments I adore from Check, Please! (the graduation kiss, the relationship talk in the kitchen, meeting the team), but this little bit of intimacy from episode 3.5 is my favorite moment. They are both just so happy and comfortable with each other. When have you ever seen Jack so at ease?

They’re smooching, snuggling -- just so smitten. You have Jack basically pouncing on Bitty and not being able to take his hands off him. You have Bitty being sassy and too cute for words with his iconic “You charmer!” line. :)

And oh yeah, did I mention the heart eyes on Zimmermann? That boy is so far gone. I love it! I live for Zimbits happiness, and this is great.

Day 1 of @omgcplovefest!!!!

SUNDAY 10/1: Share your favorite canon moment(s)/character(s)

So hard to choose, but this was a pivotal moment for me in the narrative. The moment when Jack shuts down Bitty’s self-sacrificial and “caring for others is more important than caring for me” tendencies. In Jack’s position as a closeted NHL player, the easiest route for him would have been to keep going as they were, despite Bitty’s obvious unhappiness. And probably, Bitty would have let him. But Jack didn’t, because Bitty’s happiness is more important to him than his career, which is also so pivotal, because up until now Jack hasn’t cared about anything more than the NHL. This point in the narrative means a lot to me as someone who’s a lot like Bittle - someone who tends to take care of others even at the expense of my own self care. I too need people like Jack in my life who will prioritize me and, in turn, help me to prioritize myself. Also I just love the way their relationship is developing, their open communication - they are a team, and it’s so very nice to read about them.

This was So Fucking Hard. But here are five of the best fics. A couple of these should not be a surprise, as I did the podfics for them. Others I would podfic if I had five hours of space on my soundcloud/clyp accounts.

For the longest time, Kent thought what happened to him before the Q was normal.

Or: a study in Kent Parson, past and present.

This has every trigger warning in the book on it. But it’s a beautiful story of overcoming hardship and having each others’ backs and letting oneself be happy after all.

The thing is, he’s had study nights and tv marathons in Chowder’s room. He’s gotten stoned in Shitty’s, and Lardo’s, crashed on Jack’s floor after a kegster, gone to Bitty’s for advice, and checked Ransom and Holster’s for ghosts. If it were anyone else’s, Nursey would at least have some indicator of what was going on, because he’d be able to recognise the decorations, the layout.

But Derek Nurse wakes up in William Poindexter’s room and has no idea where the fuck he is.

Nursey and Dex bodyswap. Or, how Dex learns about privilege and pulls his head out of his ass.

Instead of doing my top five fave fics, because I run @omgcprarepairs with @dexsnursey (who has written a huge number of my fave fics tbh), I’m gonna share five rarepair fics that I really enjoyed that I think deserve a little love.

It’s usually during the summer, when the Haus is quiet without all the boys there making messes and noise and a home, that Mandy ends up thinking about it. She tries not to, really she tries—it’s depressing enough to regularly lose time because you’ve suddenly run out of ghost mojo or whatever and you have to disappear for a while—but there’s something about the kitchen and it’s curtains that makes her wonder if she would’ve chosen the same ugly pattern had she ever gotten the chance to. She probably would’ve; Jenny loves them. If Mandy lets herself, she can easily imagine what else she would’ve done had she had the chance.

Unsurprisingly, death got in the way of a full life.

These are my all time faves, in no particular order-

1. Loose Lips Sink Ships - SummerFrost

"Epikegster 2014 starts with Bitty’s Winter Screw date crashing the party, and ends with Kent Parson giving him his hat and four tickets to an Aces game."

Super hard hitting Kent/Bitty AU, beautifully written.

Word count: 30k

2. Ill Equipped - lastknownwriter

"Jack's first mistake was getting drunk in a salsa club with Kent Parson. Or, the accidental Vegas married AU no one asked for."

Amazing mixture of Zimbits fluff and NSFW, just so cute!

Word count: 66k

3. Infinity, Plus One - SummerFrost

"Eric Bittle hoped to find a lot of things at Samwell University, but being caught in the cross-fire between his surly captain, Jack Zimmermann, and his friendly-but-moody alternate captain, Kent Parson, was certainly not one of them."

This one rips my heart apart, another Kent/Bitty sitch that is wonderfully written (ily SummerFrost)

Word count: 75k

4. Baking Is Punk As Fuck - heyfightme

"In which instead of actually playing hockey, the guys play shitty (pun intended) DIY punk in a band called Soft Hands. classically-trained pianist eric bittle doesn’t quite know what’s hit him."

This list would not be complete without fandom superstar heyfightme. All I can say is that this fic is incredibly written, and LORD it is LIFE CHANGING. Plus, supporting local Australian creators!

Word count: 56k

5. Alicia is P.O.T.U.S. - @fanaste

This is an ongoing fic which is exactly what it sounds like - Alicia is P.O.T.U.S., Jack is the first son, and Bitty is the peppy new Social Media Manager. It has only just started, but I adore it already. This one isn't NSFW (yet?)!

Careful the Tale You Tell by @tiptoe39

I am not really a Patater fan (although, really, I am. It’s complicated), but I am always down for really good fic, and really good lines from fic. This is by far the best fic in this fandom in terms of quality. I’ve re-read this one more than I think any other, and it’s all because of the quality of the writing.

Best line: "The slow ascent that’s taking them, above the heads of millions, to a small private island in the sky."

Apprivoisé by @sadquebecois

This is a tumblr fic that I can’t read without sobbing. It’s sad in the way that one of Jack’s biggest secrets is sad – Jack believes he cannot play hockey and love a boy too. If you’ve seen a reblogged version I highly recommend you go to the source because if you don’t know French, translations are built in for you. And gosh, is it beautiful.

Best line, en francais: “Je ne veux pas d’être un secret, mais je t’aime surtout. Si je dois être caché, je le ferai pour toi.”

If We’re Falling in Love by @northerndownpour (sunfair on AO3)

I’m always a sucker for Madison fic, and I think this is the best version of those first few days that Bitty and Jack have together after their first kiss. It’s got a good mix of longing, desire, and peace as they learn how to love each other.

Best line: He isn’t sure what he wants to tell her, exactly. This is a big deal for me, or this is important to me, or Jack is important to me and I need you to please try to understand that even if I can’t completely explain it right now.

baking is punk as fuck by @heyfightme

Way back in my first fandom I read a fic that had a considerable amount of music in it – each chapter started with lyrics and some scenes were highlighted with lyrics, all that I had never heard before. I sent $10 through the mail to the author and she sent back two cassette tapes (yes, cassette tapes) with the soundtrack to the story. That fic shaped my musical taste to this day. What I’m trying to say here is that yes this fic is interesting and well written, but the omgcp fandom needs this fic. The best part of fandom is sharing your interests with others, and I wonder how many people out there will have their lives forever altered because they were exposed to a different type of music because of this story.

Best line: Staring as he is, he can make out the words I DREAMT OF YOU IN MONTRÉAL in a speech bubble emerging from what appears to be a skull.

C/O Eric Bittle by @luckiedee

I had the privilege to beta this fic and I still come back to it again and again now that it’s been posted for a while. This is kind of random, but I love that so much of this fic takes place over the threshold of a door as they teeter around getting to know each other well enough to be let inside.

Best line: The hallway is empty, and Eric is surprised his heartbeat isn’t echoing off the walls.

I just re-read this the other day and yep, still great. It’s an alternate meeting AU with Jack in the NHL and Bitty working in a baking supplies store. While we’re here, I’ll say that if you like this one you may as well do yourself a favour and go and read all their other fics, because they’re all just as enjoyable. Fluff and other hopeful fics, and not just Zimbits.

the backpacker’s guide to the aftermath of gap year hookups, by heyfightme ( @heyfightme )

Zimbits | ~12k | Mature

It’s like a rom-com where Jack and Bitty hook-up overseas and then [spoilers - go read it]. I love it so much! Well written fluff that still has layers of drama, tension and hilarity (and yes, some sexiness too).

The Skype Dates, by tiptoe39 ( @tiptoe39 )

Zimbits | ~73k | Explicit

Basically a real-time account of Jack and Bitty’s Skype conversations over the summer after they kiss in Goodbye For The Summer - Part II. Day by day, it shows them growing into their new relationship, opening up to and learning about each other. It’s wonderful. I would read another 73k of it.

Infinity, Plus One, by SummerFrost ( @yoursummerfrost )

BittyParse (feat. Pimms + Pimbits) | ~76k | Explicit

A fabulous reworking of the comic with Kent as part of the Samwell hockey team. Totally in awe of how believably this fic fits Kent in with the rest of the team, and a really gorgeous (though at times torturous to read in a good-hurt kind of way) relationship between Bitty and Kent. I have more than one SummerFrost fic bookmarked because they are all amazing, and really emotive.

Something Like This, by emmagrant01 ( @emmagrant01 )

Zimbits | ~285k | Explicit

In the author’s own words, “AU where the Goodbye for the Summer comics didn’t happen". It’s going to take a while to read, but it’s going to be worth it. I’ve read it multiple times despite the length because it’s so well done; the characters, the story, the pacing, the everything. I’m blown away by the dedication it must have taken to write every time.

We’re lucky to have such fantastic writers in this fandom and it was hard to narrow it down to five(ish). These are five(ish) fics that I go back and read again and again. xo

A Tale of Love and How it Finds You by Nightswatch/@zimmermaenner - Bitty sees Jack Zimmermann almost every morning, but he’s never said a single word to him. Honestly, Jack Zimmermann probably doesn’t even know that he exists.

But at the hands of the village baker, Eric finds hope in the most dreary time of his life.

The Backpacker’s Guide to the Aftermath of Gap Year Hookups by @heyfightme - or, how to find yourself (and a minor obsession) at the end of six months in europe.

The Things You Said by @thewesternredcedar - Sometimes, when things get really hard and it's late at night and he can't sleep, Jack thinks his life might be better without hockey, that maybe if he gave it all up and became a firefighter or a gardener or a chef, if he left the ice forever, maybe then he wouldn’t need to have that bottle of pills in his bag anymore. But every time he’s back on the ice, he remembers. This is the only place where his life actually makes any sense. Or, the story of three times Jack Zimmermann meets Eric Bittle.

Until Your Father’s at the Table by @alphacrone - Ten years after Samwell, Eric Bittle runs into Jack Zimmermann in a sports bar in Boston and rediscovers the most important relationship of his life.

Being in Motion by @marswithghosts - Watching a college boy jerk off online for money is not what Jack Zimmermann ever saw himself doing. Getting to know that boy is something he expected even less.

Today's theme for @omgcplovefest is your top 5 favorite fics in this fandom!

As I have before with rec lists, I'm disqualifying anything on the first two pages of the CP tag on AO3 sorted by kudos - everyone knows and loves those fics, they don't need my rec. Some of them are amazing stories that I've read multiple times, but so have most people.

But that still leaves so many great fics, and this was so hard! So this is not quite a definite Top 5 and more like Five Fics That Are Definitely In My Top 20 And You Should Read. Ask me on a different day and you might get a slightly different list, but these are all way way way up there.

Finally I'll Be Yours by @angryspace-ravenclaw

When Jack uses a youtube tutorial to make cupcakes, he doesn't expect his entire life to be turned upside down by the charismatic Eric Bittle--YouTuber extraordinaire.

I think one of the first WIPs I followed in this fandom. Bitty has cystic fibrosis and is Deaf, and since the author has personal experience with both of these it’s very realistic and deals frankly with Bitty’s health problems. But it’s also incredibly sweet and fluffy as these two fall for each other immediately, before they can even meet in person, and there is hurt/comfort all around.

Ok, this one doesn’t really need the rec either tbh - the only reason it’s not on the top two pages is because it’s so recent, and it’s on the third page as it is. You’ve probably all read this amazing and fun AU, and if you haven’t, you are missing out. Again, the author having personal experience with the AU setting gives it a realism that makes the story that much more immersive. Plus lots of good music recs built in!

The only non-Zimbits on the list (they’re in the background, though). This deals frankly and harshly with one possible backstory for Kent, and what happens when he finally starts to deal with it. Answer: Gets a really hot boyfriend. For real, I want Ngozi to draw Day into the comic so I can ogle him. But seriously, shit goes down in this story, but it has a happy ending with Kent on his way to healing.

Bitty sighs. “So now everyone in the Haus thinks I’ve started a long-distance relationship with someone from California named Colton who I met through Twitter…” “Colton?” “I know, Jack. I was panicking!” Jack has to bite his lip to keep from laughing. “Okay. Colton.”

Or, the one in which Mashkov says the line, “Soon you get head here, too,” and it’s not a sex joke. Enjoy.

I won WRC’s auction in FTH, and this is what I got and it’s so good. I just scream and reread it and scream some more. From Jack’s ridiculously awkward attempts at tweeting as Colton, to Bitty being prepared for Jack’s visit to Madison, to the ending that I did not see coming, it’s just adorable and perfect.

Journeyman - an athlete who plays for a large number of clubs over his professional career.

Jack Zimmermann signs with Providence, but winds up playing for five clubs in his eight year career. Good or bad, Bitty is with him every step of the way.

This fic does such a great job of showing the ups and downs of Jack and Bitty’s life together over time as Jack gets traded repeatedly. It deals really well with the realities of negotiating a marriage where you can’t always control where you live, or whether you’re living together (a topic I am all too familiar with), medical problems, Jack’s addiction, all sorts of things. Like, so much happens in this fic, it’s hard to believe it’s under 40K!
