Ethnic Groups and their differences - brief
This can be an incredible way to explore how many different cultures view gender-norms, and their role in society. It can also be up to the writers discretion on how they portray specific ethnicities and how their people display A/B/O, however, the purpose of this distinction in different ethnicities should be to uplift people, not to bring them down – looking at you, writers who consider the western approach to be the norm, when it isn’t even the norm in western society. How’s that 5/6 divorce rate feel? Anyway.
A general idea on how to extrapolate on this effect is this – how do peoples bodies change in different environments? In areas where people face real predators – like jaguars, and bears – would it be safer for Omegas and Alphas to have less of a scent and simply have better senses? In places where food is scarce most of the year, perhaps the Omegas and Alphas sync their ruts and heats to either whenever the harvest is plentiful – whenever their fat reserves reach a certain amount – or simply every year when spring begins? Perhaps extreme environments, such as hot deserts and humid jungles, will force Omegas and Alphas to sweat without a scent, and to have less heats, and perhaps colder places will allow couples and families to intentionally spark heats to create warmth? Perhaps you could even have certain ethnicities that lack the sensory range of others, or vice versa, or have ethnicities that display differently due to their environment not requiring such extreme differences in strength, like New Zealand and some island nations, where there were no natural predators, perhaps allowing the Omegas to develop into being as strong as, or perhaps stronger than their Alpha counterparts in moments of high stress. If the world is post-fallout, especially a radical kind, such as chemical warfare, perhaps the world lives in greater extremes, creating whole new ethnicities in places that live life differently, and are biologically sometimes adjacent to their neighbours.
The most important part to stress would always be that the people would match their environment, and that another people entering, and enforcing their worldview would go incredibly poorly, even if they are seemingly more in the right – such as cold weather ethnicities valuing small, close units, as opposed to large desert-based communities who share their resources for safety and survival. It’s all about a matter of perspective, and the way in which different ethnicities – such as Old Celtic and Gaelic and Picti Britain and their subsequent invaders – interact and raise children and families can be a brilliant way to examine and deconstruct gender, culture, ethnic influence, and society as a whole.
It would also be interesting to explore what kind of Omega and Alpha beauty standards exist due to the environment around them – such as the continent of Australia, where being tidy and clean is the most attractive feature someone can have, versus perhaps a resource scarce country, who value partners who are evidentially eating well. It is interesting to note that, recently discovered by anthropologists, peoples in desert countries acquire and store fat in different ways and forms to peoples in cold weather countries. Which is another consideration a writer can use when writing in different perspectives! Something one character is ashamed of – such as thicker than usual in their culture and ethnicity thighs – can be considered incredibly attractive to another character due to their culture and ethnicity placing heavy importance in the presence of such features. Perhaps even an Alpha who is ashamed of having a quiet voice, being from a country in Europe, is considered incredibly attractive to other varieties of Ethnic Omegas and Betas because a ‘quiet Alpha is a good warrior and a hunter’. Writers can go as ham as they want with this, because it’s a real thing in our actual world! Exploring the differences in beauty standards from different ethnicities and cultures can be an incredible experience.

@morbidlizard replied to your post “Can I ask, why do you love BL romance better than...”:
I mean it's unfortunate but asian BL is just hands down better than western for so many reasons <: / I've been reading asian BL for literal decades now (AHHH) and I can maybe count on one hand the western series I've enjoyed that had some sort of queer romance that had all I wanted or at least a part of the tropes I like...And even then, it's usually F/F relationships 9_9 (and when I say asian, I mean japanese, korean, chinese, some indonesian too! etc etc...)
Actually yeah this is also really where it's at
I think a lot about how we're still getting extremely like... milquetoast wholesome queer narratives (most of the time) in western m/m romance media (I have nothing against Heartstopper, but it's extremely 'all queer people are pure wholesome need-to-be-protected jellybeans' and like, cool, but I want more than that as well - like give me 20 shows that are 'all queer people' in 20 different genres, thanks. BL will give me that - BL will pay people to give me that.
The only way I can get that from western media is fanfiction, and sometimes - kind of - from published m/m, when it's not paint-by-numbers rapid release that isn't about telling stories from the heart and it's about telling stories from the bank account instead (which is a valid reason to write, it's just not what I'm looking for as a reader - most readers who end up loving and writing fanfiction aren't looking for this imho)).
Thomas Baudinette is actually doing incredible work in this area of Media Studies, where it's literally a known thing that BL - particularly in countries like Korea, Thailand and Taiwan - is actually taking huge strides ahead in the genre, comparatively, especially when up against western BL.
It almost feels like we're on a giant lag, buffering behind them, and about the only place we aren't is in fanfiction, which makes sense, because the cross-pollination between fandom and south-east Asian BL is incredible (literally, they got omegaverse and guide-verse from western fanfiction and western fandom, and imho are doing a lot more with it for money than we are, see: Pit Babe).
I've been reading up pretty heavily into Baudinette's work, and also a lot of the recent and up-to-date work in BL Studies (a thing), and like, it's just kind of fascinating the different interrogations of BL we have going on in different cultures and subcultures, and how different senses of place and culture and ethnicity and minority and belonging can influence our tales, along with many different manifestations of capitalisation, economy, influence etc.
And that isn't to say there aren't huge problematic areas for BL in all countries, not just western, I can critique western BL so easily because I am western, and it's been really interesting reading critiques of BL from academics who live within other countries from their perspectives too. But I do think if I want really great BL romances, turning to fanfiction and then turning to other cultures and what they're doing is often the first thing I do. I just don't have to search as hard to find what I'm looking for. And like, I'm lazy, lol, I don't want to search through 100 published works to find like 1-5 stories I might reread but not over my favourite manhwa or like fanfiction or whatever.
This has been my area of like... personal study for a few months now (literally reading Regimes of Desire: Young Gay Men, Media and Masculinity in Tokyo by Baudinette atm) and I have a lot of thoughts of which this is just a very generalised ramble and not actually anything of great meaning but like sadkljfas TL;DR yeah

The slur topic is a bit weird tbh, not because people are annoyed about certain terms sounding like or being alike, but because it forgets that certain slurs are particular to a specific place, and not everyone is going to know or even care to research because it has no relevance to them, or is even something that pertains to their social experience. Expecting everyone to adhere to specific rule of not using what is a "slur" in one place probably won't work, because of how different the understanding of language and personal social politics are. If a term has absolutely zero relevance where you live, and it's already tied to a different meaning a/b/o as a term for omegaverse, how should they ever connect the dots, or care to find out that someone from a different culture also uses that words as a slur? Why is a completely unrelated person suddenly guilty of the insults and slurs perpetuated by people of a different culture? And even just the awareness of it or the mind of it. Will people who ask this also respect not using slurs and terms of insults from other cultures? Or is this a thing only expected of people when it comes to anglospheric racially/sexuality/indentity charged insults and slurs? How many people think "colored" is an insult or a slur? In South Africa it's a description for, I quote "multiracial ethnic communities". The other name for the makrut lime, "kefir/kafir/kaffir/cafri" is considered a racial slur against black people in South Africa, yet it's still readily and openly used in recipes, videos, food guides. It also originated in Islam and was used against non-believers. Oriental has a big negative history in the West, and is considered a negative term, and degrading. Yet you can easily find a lot of Asian stores that use that specific term or tag to refer to items produced and sold in the global market. I think a big one is also for other Spanish speakers that the word "negro" for the color black is constantly being pointed at as a slur by people not speaking Spanish, but as a Spanish speaker myself it's literally just a color. Crayola could sing a song about the misunderstandings about their multi lingual labelling of their crayons. I remember a person from the West having a giant tantrum about an online stores url, "BiginJap" ranting about the fact that the "Jap" part, even though the store using it Big in Japan, is a literal japanese store, from Japan, selling Japanese products. Gypsie is considered a slur across a lot of Europe, if not most of it, I still see people argue that because "it's fine here in the US" they don't have to care about it and can just use it, even if they're not part of that group. Who's in the right here? The Roma and Sinti people or Europe? Or the people using the term in the US? I am not saying you can't criticize the use of these words, but I'm saying that to in a way or some form to consider the intent when they're used. To assume the worst, especially when the person does not share your culture, language, or awareness of your culture shows a degree of ignorance and personal cultural-centrism that just won't work on a global scale. You can say "this is a slur where I am" but whatever that means to anyone not part of your culture, is up to them by the end of the day, especially when it's meaning can wary so much.
--
No, in general, nobody expects anyone to care about anything to do with Australia. That's partly why people are irritated about this one: the difference between what everyone is expected to know about the US vs. Australia.

Since I mentioned Matilda, I can’t stop thinking of stories like Annie, Cinderella, and even mythology where godly parents were somewhat detached from a demigod’s childhood (like Hercules).
We could talk about how those individual cases might be impacted by omegaverse (and I’m not gonna discourage you from doing that if you find it fun). But I think a deeper, more cohesive question would be: how would fiction that mentions/concerns adoption be portrayed in omegaverse? Would the fantasy of the perfect found family carry over, would new themes/fantasies emerge, would these themes change based on historical events, etc?
Also! your adoption post wasn’t a downer!! >:(( it’s a topic that is worthy of analysis like that, and it wouldn’t feel right if it was a happy-go-lucky theory anyway. Also also I lowkey apologize for dragging you back from the dead with my post 💀
Lmao, no no! Just a lot have been goin on rn and such you didn’t drag me back. I’ve been in my other tumblr too wisjsi
Anyways! (Over all Tw// for this post for any other readers)
“how would fiction that mentions/concerns adoption be portrayed in omegaverse“
depends on how your adoption in your verse is. Currently I am very neutral about how to go about this so I’ll cover everything:
Positive: It would kinda be like, adoption is good and has its issues but it’s mostly well/handled the best way they can! They’d portray it with merit and addressing (or at least loosely) the circumstances and why this was an option that was chosen would arise. I think for fantasies I think the ‘found family’ wouldn’t carry on AS much. Maybe that’s only in the deepest parts of the world where theres just bad everywhere.
Since this is positive I don’t think there would be too many delusions but one delusion I can see is that “Adoption can never be an option for you because your life isn’t as bad,” which- is bad and sad but I think that delusion would carry over. Why? Well an ethnical adoption system IN MY OPINION doesn’t involve you taking away a kid cause they’re in poverty it’s having programs to help that family. (There is more but happy part lol)
I also think that parents don’t consider adoption as the solution to their puppylessness. They consider it a way to help a kid in need with the possibility of gaining nothing
Neutral: Neutral will be well what it is. It’ll have its delusions and its realities. Found family fantasy would be HUGE but not the fantasy of ‘perfect parents.’ (Aka our world thinks you just need love and cultural stripping and identity change isn’t bad because they adopted you and that’s a good thing. In ‘positive’ this would be addressed with parents better being equipped and researched about a kid’s possible cultural background. At least with transracial adoptions)
I think the issues surrounding it is addressed but in a basic form opposed to a deep one.
Negative: Tbh like how our world is today. Found family delusion, ‘adoptive parents are saints,’ ‘adoption is a gift’ and I think a NEW delusion that would arise is: ‘they gave you their scent you should be grateful,’ like okay?? Another would be how about the dynamics:
‘Your parents adopted an Alpha?? Oh you should be so so so grateful since you are- no offense a handful,’ - Delusion: Alpha children has the lowest adoption rate to be picked cause they’re a handful
reality: Alpha children are harder to adopt out because the government wants to keep its charity points and Beta Children just don’t- have that kind of ‘urgency,’
‘Omegas are adopted mostly because they’re the most tragic so of you’re gonna adopt adopt an Omega!’ - Delusion: Omega children have the most tragic stories so adopt them
reality: The system know Omegas are the societies babies, ofc they’re gonna pull on their heart strings and make some shit up about how 90% of their omegas come from a bad situation
Beta’s would cost the least
As for INFANTS since you cannot tell a pups dynamic until ages 3-4, they are usually kept unavailable unless you are willing to pay an ungodly sum (they gotta get those dynamic stories/papers)
As for historical events I have a few in mind? But they are not part of my culture so I feel awkward for bringing them up lol
Some Matilda things to cleanse your soul:
Matilda grew up in her parents house, so her scent confusion and security isn’t ‘that’ severe. But also that place smells of 80% smoke and other things so definitely still bad (I mean ofc it is)
Matilda was older when she found out she wanted to be adopted - and that’s okay and 1000% valid (imo) and Ms Honey did all the research after adopting her
Ms Honey’s scent is very much honey suckle, dewdrops, and the sunset
Matilda’s scent is a soft grassy breeze, leather and a small hint of lemon

hello! for the questions for fic writers meme, a few questions for you:
Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?
12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?
17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?
Great minds must think alike, because I've answered 12 and 17 here! (Short answers: omegaverse and train controller AU, respectively) 7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of? As I mostly write shorter fics, worldbuilding doesn't crop up too often in my works (and consequently, it's not one of my strengths, either). That being said, the times I have stretched my legs with slightly longer stories, I have had fun with some of the worldbuilding elements! There are two fics I'd like to highlight in particular. Firstly, a rare Original Work: Aulia & Haidrul's Enchanted Weapons and Wares. Given I struggle with worldbuilding at the best of times, I was completely astonished to find myself writing a 10k origfic within the span of four days 😅 But I was on holiday when someone who's writing I admire came up as a last-minute pinch hit for an exchange, and the character types they requested fit in perfectly with this fictional world I'd kind of been building in the back of my head for years?
Which might sound a bit strange (then again, do I know how these things work? not really), but basically, it's low fantasy set in an Indonesian-inspired post-apocalyptic world, where magic is a known quantity but is dying out due to a rejection of tradition and a declining population. The story is basically framed as two elderly store proprietors telling stories about their Youth to a passing traveller who's going east to fight in the war (there's a dragon problem, but that's not the focus of this particular fic...), and how they built a happy life for themselves despite not living up to the expectations people had for them. Honestly, I'd love to write more in this world and expand on the universe more, but I have a certain impostor syndrome when it comes to stories inspired by my own culture: as a mixed-race person, I never really feel like I can lay claim to anything when it comes to race and ethnicity and that's something I'm still working through and unpacking for myself. Writing this fic was definitely a step in the right direction though and helped me let me overcome that fear a tiny bit for myself. Secondly, my longest Dragon Age fic, To Find A Cure, which is mostly told through a series of letters told between Anora and her wife, Warden-Commander Cousland, during the Inquisition-era while Cousland is off on her quest to, uh, find a cure for the Calling! I ended up knee-deep in Fereldan Politics Lore for this one, oops, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I also ended up with something of a sequel outlined with a bunch of OCs where Elethea Cousland (who's introduced in To Find A Cure: she's Fergus's daughter and was sent to Denerim as a child to be raised as heir to the throne), Rowan Guerrin the II (pours one out for Connor...), and a maternal cousin of Anora's run off to try and reunite Anora and Elissa when Anora is on her deathbed (Anora is of course, extremely displeased that her heir has disappeared when she is actively dying, but Elethea's a bit of a romantic...) It's basically inspired by The Stolen Throne but these three are aware of Ferelden's proud history of polyamory so, less tragic in the end.

*walks up to you*
uh, out of curiosity, what are the ‘two big ones’ people miss in omegaverse????
The two big things people forget when reading, writing, looking at, thinking about omegaverse that make me physically cringe at the lack of awareness:
Omegaverse is a recontextualization of our current world, with constructs and hierarchies that mirror those we know to exist. Cisnormativity and heteronormativity are reflected in them. "Alpha x Omega" and "Beta x Beta" relationships are the heterosexuality of omegaverse. A person's prescribed social roles (based on their secondary sexual characteristics) suiting their self-concept is the cisgender of omegaverse. Sure it's supposed to be queer, but it's usually not. Blahblah list of reasons. But #1 makes me cringe BECAUSE of #2.
Gender, sex, sexuality, identity, and understanding of all of these ideas are relative to culture. Particularly ethnicity and the way these concepts are taught people. The ideas of what is normative and what is queer, what is acceptable and what is not, whether these characteristics are relevant to a person's identity or not, so much of these things that are discussed in queer theory and shit? It's not the same everywhere in the world. US white person queerness isn't US black person queerness isn't Chinese diaspora queerness isn't Han Chinese in China queerness and I could go on, but do you see what I mean? People create and read omegaverse by their own ideas of these concepts, same as people often judge other places' constructs based off one's own constructs instead of the constructs and context of that place or people. Consider Sappho And Her Friend shit, or historical ciswashing and straightwashing and whitewashing and this that and the other.
Ancient Greek Omegaverse wouldn't necessarily be Today Greek Omegaverse which wouldn't be Today US Omegaverse, where the US is where the genre originates. Ya know what I mean?
For that reason I think it'd be a challenge to do respectful, thoughtful portrayals of FGO Omegaverse. You'd be framing it primarily through FGO being Japanese and therefore use Japanese Omegaverse norms, but you'd have to have a lot more information and develop different understandings of omegaverse concepts for different Heroic Spirits from different places. I'd want to do a thoughtful portrayal, anyway. I'd be bored out of my fucking mind otherwise. I've read so much Omegaverse that very little entertains me.

I have no idea when this ask was sent, but thank you so much for reading! I am glad that my little research and ramblings interested you!
