Pittsburgh Neighborhood Profile: Brunot Island
Tumblr media
Brunot Island mush ball team, 1929. Duquesne Light Photograph Collection, AIS.2012.05.
While no proper residential neighborhood is currently found there, Brunot Island (or Brunots) has as interesting a history as any of Pittsburgh’s 90 neighborhoods. Between near-death historical mishaps, famous races, and sheer potential, the 129-acre island two miles down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh’s point has seen a lot.
Brunot Island takes its name from Dr. Felix Brunot, a French immigrant who settled in the Pittsburgh region following the American Revolutionary War. Brunot owned and lived on the island which, according to historical accounts, was larger than its current size. Writing in 1810 following a “voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers” Fortescue Cummings described the island thus: “This island contains near three hundred acres of a most luxuriant soil about half of which has been cleared by Dr. Brunot, a native of France, who adds hospitality and sociality to the abundance which he derives from his well cultivated farm”.[i]
Tumblr media
Brunot Island, 1902, Part of Allegheny City’s Ninth Ward. G.M. Hopkins Plat Map Volume 2, Plate 31.
In 1803 the Brunots received a soon-to-be renowned group of guests. On August 3rd Merriweather Lewis and his compatriots, in the infant stages of their journey west, visited the island upon their departure from Pittsburgh. During a display of (attempted) marksmanship using Lewis’s air gun, a guest delivered an errant shot to a bystander’s head! The bystander would survive, and as the ASC’s Patricia Lowery Papers show, the incident lives on in infamy.[ii]
By 1820 Dr. Brunot had sold the island and for much of the 19th century it was utilized as farmland, with limited residential use. In the latter portion of the century the Pittsburgh Railways Company constructed the Brunot Island Power Station on the island’s Eastern half to power electric street cars. The Western half of the island was occupied by a dirt race track, primarily used for horse racing by members of the Pittsburgh and Allegheny Driving Club. The island was only accessible by ferry, as the bridge spanning it was used as railroad trestle.

In 1915 the Pittsburgh Press reported on a spectacle that would likely still draw an audience today. In a matchup between budding technologies, thousands of spectators ferried to the island to watch aviator Barney Oldfield race his plane against “master driver” De Lyold Thompson (from Washington, PA) in an automobile. The Press described the event as a “race between the two crafts to decide their identity”.[iii] The car won the race.[iv]
Duquesne Light (the renamed Allegheny County Light Company and subsidiary of the Philadelphia Company) took over operations of the Brunot Island Power Station in 1913, following which expansions were made in generating capacity. During World War I “Pittsburgh…turned to Brunot Island for Power. Stoker attendants worked around the clock to keep the boiler fires blazing.” Capacity was again enlarged in 1930 with the debut of Reed Power Station.[v]
Tumblr media
Brunot Island, 1929, with Reed Power Station Under Construction. Duquesne Light Photograph Collection, AIS.2012.05.
Today, Brunot island is the property of Duquesne Light, however there is evidence that it has been seen as desirable for more than a power plant in its recent history.
The ASC’s Edward Smuts Papers reveal that in the early 1970s discussions were had concerning Duquesne’s potential reduction of the Brunot Island plant and redevelopment of the entire island.[vi] Long-range plans included “a nuclear plant in the 80’s on the southern end of the island” although it was acknowledged that proximity to the City rendered that idea unrealistic. The potential for “public recreation” and “other elements including specialized types of housing” were suggested as well.
As recently as 2011 a group of Lewis and Clark reenactors proposed a Lewis and Clark Nature Preserve on the Eastern End of the island which would include hiking trails, wildlife habitats, and be accessible by kayak, ferry, or a pedestrian bridge.[vii] Modern architectural concepts for residential and recreational use of the island certainly have an exciting flair.
While not as well-known as Herr’s or Neville Island, Brunot Island certainly has had an interesting history. As the city and region continue to experience consistent population numbers and a demand for affordable housing, Brunot Island may become a proper neighborhood yet.

Where To Find Dog Parks In Chicago's Western Suburbs
ACROSS ILLINOIS — When the weather’s sunny and your pooch is gazing out of the window of your home with a far-off, wistful look, it’s time to visit a dog park. There are plenty of dog parks in Chicago’s western suburbs.
Dog parks are so popular in the Western suburbs that the DuPage County Forest Preserve says it issues roughly 10,000 dog park permits every year.
Here’s a look at where to find a dog park, what’s nearby, and more.
Before You Go
Most dog parks in the western burbs have specific requirements regarding vaccinations, leashes, age, and more. Dog park hours are usually between dawn and dusk. Before you head out, check to make sure you meet all the requirements for the dog park.
Dogs are also permitted in many of the forest preserves and parks throughout Chicago’s western suburbs, though dogs must usually be leashed unless the park has its own space for dogs.

"Enough is enough", "Get rid", "Poison" - These Boro fans want key man gone after FA Cup draw
Loads of Middlesbrough fans have been reacting to their disappointing draw with Newport County, and there are plenty calling for Tony Pulis’ head.
Middlesbrough drew 1-1 for the second consecutive game on Saturday, matching their drab affair against Millwall with an identical result against League Two Newport.
The underdogs travelled to the Riverside stadium labouring in 14thplace in the fourth tier of English football, and they will now fancy their chances of an upset in the replay.
Pulis elected for a fairly strong side for the cup tie, starting new signing John Obi Mikel alongside many first team regulars like George Friend, Stewart Downing and Britt Assombalonga.
Thogden has ranked his top 5 sets of Championship away fans for Pl>ymaker FC. Did your club make the list? Find out in the video below…
Daniel Ayala put Boro in front early in the second half, and it looked to be an underwhelming but assured result, only for former Riverside academy player Matthew Dolan to pop up with an equaliser in the 93rd minute.
Fans are now getting fed up of Pulis, as his side have scored two or more goals just three times in their last 13 games.
The 61 year-old’s Boro win rate of 44 per cent is actually the highest of any club he has managed, but his negative play-style is infuriating, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Please let that be the last time we hear from him
— • (@erimus123) January 26, 2019
He didn’t happen to resign did he?
— Liam Dunn (@DunnLd15) January 26, 2019
There is nothing that would improve this club and its atmosphere more than sacking Tony Pulis. Every day he spends at the club is just setting us back further and further. Negative, outdated manager
— Danny Taylor (@DannyTaylorDT) January 26, 2019
Is there a spare seat on the Newport coach by any chance? Take the dinosaur back home on a one-way ticket.
— Jay Shaw (@JayShaw180) January 26, 2019
Get rid of the fossil now enough is enough
— YOUAREMYBORO ?????????????? (@THEREALBORO) January 26, 2019
Tony pulis get out of our club! ?
— Simon Hide (@sihide1) January 26, 2019
I’ll keep saying it- Pulis isn’t the right man to take us forward.
— Matthew Bye (@MatthewBye13) January 26, 2019
Utter joke, first time been to a boro game and not celebrated a goal, dire to watch, need pulis out pronto, pure poison
