Waterloo may be a digression, but Hugo’s giving it the feeling of having a plot by focusing on specific “characters” in this chapter. He still holds to his point on the overall chaos of battle by switching rapidly between them; the first paragraph alone covers various men and battalions, most of whom die suddenly within that very paragraph after being introduced. In addition to the randomness conveyed by this rapidity, Hugo specifies the unexpected ways in which many of them were killed as well. To offer just one example:
“A sergeant of the English Guards, the foremost boxer in England, reputed invulnerable by his companions, had been killed there by a little French drummer-boy.”
The “invulnerable” is suddenly killed at the hands of one who appears weak; experience and strength only offer so much protection against this form of carnage.
This section honestly feels like parts of Homer’s Iliad (as well as the mythology around it). The “weak” killing someone “invulnerable” resembles Paris taking down Achilles after the events of the epic and towards the end of the Trojan War. Similarly, the “listing” of deaths is common in several books of the Iliad where the focus is less on the feats of individual characters than the totality of the war itself, with many of the fallen characters being given a brief description of their deaths at most. Some examples from this chapter are:
“ Baring had been dislodged, Alten put to the sword.”
“ out of three lieutenant-colonels, two lay on the earth,— Hamilton wounded, Mater slain. Ponsonby had fallen, riddled by seven lance-thrusts.”
And here’s an example from Butler’s translation of Book XV of the Iliad:
“ Hector killed Stichius and Arcesilaus, the one, leader of the Boeotians, and the other, friend and comrade of Menestheus. Aeneas killed Medon and Iasus. The first was bastard son to Oileus, and brother to Ajax, but he lived in Phylace away from his own country, for he had killed a man, a kinsman of his stepmother Eriopis whom Oileus had married. Iasus had become a leader of the Athenians, and was son of Sphelus the son of Boucolos. Polydamas killed Mecisteus, and Polites Echius, in the front of the battle, while Agenor slew Clonius. Paris struck Deiochus from behind in the lower part of the shoulder, as he was flying among the foremost, and the point of the spear went clean through him.”
There’s a similar trend of giving quick lists of deaths, with occasional background (”lieutenant-colonels” vs “leader of the Boeotians”) or information on how they died (”seven lance-thrusts,” “point of the spear”). Overall, it’s quite gruesome and monotonous, making the battle as a whole feel senseless, gory, and dull in contrast to the “heroic” exploits of individuals, who are praised for participating in this same activity because they’re somehow considered distinctive (like Napoleon and Wellington here or any of the major Greek or Trojan heroes in the epic poem).
As in the rest of the epic, some characters are given moments of “glory” that highlight their courage and/or strength. In this chapter, Wellington stays standing in the middle of a rain of bullets even as his aide dies by his side, not flinching in the face of the French forces. While this certainly adds to the drama of the chapter, it also glorifies Wellington to an extent (which, of course, further raises the tension).
Spoilers below:
It’s notable that Hugo doesn’t only use this language for Waterloo; he takes this same approach to describe the deaths of most of Les Amis. He even makes the comparison explicit, quoting the Iliad immediately after they die. And of course, where Enjolras goes, classical metaphors will soon follow. He was the only one not wounded (suggesting invulnerability, like Achilles), and he’s also called “Apollo” (a deity) before he dies. Hugo certainly wants the reader to view their cause as glorious (hence the descriptions of Enjolras), but he also wants to underscore the pain and senselessness involved in any form of battle. It’s less “battle is awful and should be avoided at all costs” and more “we should live in a better world where les Amis wouldn’t have died like this, fighting for basic human dignity.”

Chiron from Greek mythology.
Chiron was notable throughout Greek mythology for his youth-nurturing nature. His personal skills tend to match those of his foster father Apollo and made him rise above his beastly nature. Chiron was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine, and thus was credited with the discovery of botany and pharmacy, the science of herbs and medicine.
Although a centaur, Chiron's physical appearance often differs somewhat from other centaurs, demonstrating his status and heritage. In traditional Greek representations of Chiron his front legs are human, rather than equine, this is in contrast to the traditional representation of centaurs, which have the entire lower body of a horse. This clearly sets Chiron apart from the other centaurs, making him easily identifiable. This difference may also have highlighted Chiron's unique lineage, being the son of Cronus. Chiron is often depicted carrying a branch with dead hares he has caught hanging from it. Chiron is also often depicted wearing clothes, demonstrating he is more civilised and unlike a normal centaur.
According to an archaic myth, Chiron was sired by the Titan Cronus when he had taken the form of a horse and impregnated the nymph Philyra. Soon after giving birth to Chiron, Philyra abandoned her child out of shame and disgust. Chiron, effectively orphaned, was later found by the god Apollo, who took him under his wing and taught him the art of music, lyre, archery, medicine and prophecy. Apollo's twin sister, Artemis, trained him in archery and hunting. Chiron's uniquely peaceful character, kindness, and intelligence are attributed to Apollo and Artemis.
A great healer, astrologer, and respected oracle, Chiron was said to be the first among centaurs and highly revered as a teacher and tutor. Among his pupils were many culture heroes: Asclepius, Aristaeus, Ajax, Aeneas, Actaeon, Caeneus, Theseus, Achilles, Jason, Peleus, Telamon, Perseus, sometimes Heracles, Oileus, and in one Byzantine tradition, even Dionysus.

Stymphalian Bird
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stymphalian Bird
Pausanias theorized that the Stymphalian birds originated in Arabia, citing the presence of fierce desert birds known as the Stymphalides. He then admits that the population found at Stymphalos, in Arcadia, may have been the result of a few wayward birds making their way into Greece. Following this line of reasoning, Pausanias deduces that they earned the name of Stymphalides due to their fame in Greece, and the name then supplanted whatever name they originally had in Arabia!
Variations: Stymphalide, Bird of Ares
The appearance of the Stymphalian birds is no less muddled. Their most feared weapon is the sharpened, pointed tips of their wing feathers, which they fling like darts to stab their prey. Sometimes their feathers and beaks are made of bronze or iron, the better for piercing armor. Pausanias described them as about crane-sized, but resembling the ibis in shape, but with a stronger bill; elsewhere he says they are like hawks or eagles. In Greek art they have been represented as ibises, swans, and other such waterfowl; at least one obol from Stymphalos shows a bird with a short crest and a stout, powerful bill. Finally, no doubt influenced by tales of harpies and sirens, the temple of Stymphalian Diana also has stone statues of virgins with birds’ feet.
It remains true that the Stymphalian birds were first and foremost associated with Lake Stymphalia. They terrorized the region, ravaging crops, killing people, and poisoning the ground with their dung. Fox suggests that the legend originated as a glamorization of a plague or pestilence rising from the marshes, which would explain their noxious qualities. While their feathered darts could pierce armor, they were powerless against a certain type of tree bark, which held them fast like quicklime. There was only so much bark to go around, though, and the birds seemed numberless.
It was this scourge that Heracles was sent to destroy. As his sixth labor, it was one of a list of impossible tasks, and indeed the vast numbers of birds seemed beyond the hero’s strength. Heracles got around this by exploiting a simple fact – despite their numbers and ferocity, Stymphalian birds were as easily spooked as sparrows. Fashioning a pair of bronze castanets, he made such a din that the flock took off in a panic; from there he shot a great number down with his arrows, while the remainder of the birds flew off and were never seen in Arcadia again.
That was not the end of the Stymphalian birds, as from Greece they made their way to the Black Sea and populated the Island of Ares, where they became sacred guardians to the god of war. It was this flock that Jason and his Argonauts encountered on their way to Colchis. While the birds of Ares managed to wound the Argonaut Oileus with a feather projectile, they were scared off once more by the noise of rattling bronze armor, but not before pelting the Argonauts with a hailstorm of feathers.

Among them, Agamemnon pushed ahead. He killed Bienor, shepherd of the people, and then Oileus, his friend and driver. Oileus jumped from the chariot and hurtled headlong straight at Agamemnon, who drove his sharp spear through his eager forehead. The thick bronze helmet could not stop the blade. It drove right through the metal to the bone. Inside his skull his brains were turned to mush, despite his eager courage. Agamemnon the lord of men, destroyed them both, then stripped their armor and their clothes, then left them there -- their naked chests shone bright. Then he attacked Isus and Antiphus, two sons of Priam, one born in wedlock and the other not, both riding in a single chariot.

História do Atletismo
Tumblr media
Modalidades do atletismo antigo
Tumblr media
O fim do atletismo
Criação do Comité
