I'm thinking again about how in the dream version of Ed and Stede's big beach reunion, at the start of the season, they run into each other's arms and fall over together.
Tumblr media
But then, in the real version, at the end of the season, they run into each other's arm and hold each other up.

If you see any of my posts about Izzy’s death know that I am NOT mad that Izzy died. It makes sense for him as a character. I AM MAD at how he died, the characters reaction to him dying/once he’s dead, and the way it was rushed.

oh dont mind me im just thinking about how our flag means death's final episode is really just a big metaphor for how queerness will live on no matter how hard cishet people try to integrate themselves or try to eliminate us. you cannot kill the queer spirit just like how you cant kill the pirate spirit

Izzy digs himself out of the grave- but it turns out the crew were too lazy to dig more than two feet deep(.6 meters). So a dramatic moment is cut short with him just...sitting up. Lightly disturbing the dirt around him.

OFMD SEASON 2 EP 8 SPOILERS
Listen obviously I'm super sad about Izzy dying, but I've had some time to think on it in the last 8 hours that I've been at work, and I have some things to say about his death to the show creators and actors (even though they'll probably never see this lol):
Thank you for redeeming him and letting him redeem himself before he died.
Thank you for giving me time this season to learn to love him as the complex character he is, not just the antagonist he portrayed before he learned to love and be loved.
Thank you for killing him in a way that meant something (Ed being able to move on from the Blackbeard persona) rather than just killing him (or anyone else) to up the views.
Thank you for letting him die at peace with himself and with the world and with his family.
Thank you for having his family give him a proper burial and goodbye, rather than just having him die and then changing the scene to one he is no longer in.
Thank you for giving me what I think is the first time where one of my favorite characters has died/been killed, and it was done in such a way that I didn't go through the five stages of grief, I saw it happen and was immediately awash with acceptance (even though I was still sad) because I knew the character had done their best, and they were at peace, and their death wasn't specifically an end for them, but rather a beginning for others, and a good one at that.
So thank you David Jenkins, and Taika Waititi, and Con O'Neill, and everyone else who helped develop Izzy Hands into the wonderful character that he was. Thanks for giving him, even for a small amount of time, la vie en rose.

What about "indestructible little fucker"? After surviving so much, to go out like that...
What about the symbolism of the crew chanting "one more song" and Izzy's triumphant "I've got one more song!"

It would be so sexy of them if in episode 8 Ed goes fishing but everytime that he catch something is a bottle, so he fishes bottle after bottle of love letters that Stede wrote for him without even being sure that Edward would read them someday just because he loves him, just because he couldn't hold it in

I've been turning over the 'boyfriends' deleted scene in my head all day, rotating it gently in my hands to get a good look at it from all angles, trying to figure out why it hit me in such an emotional place, and I realised it's because it's so...young?
It just perfectly captures that wonder and surprise and joyfulness of being in love for the first time, and realising that you can suddenly use words like 'boyfriend' and they mean something tangible to you - testing out the language and definitions of your relationship for the first time and being absolutely giddy with it all.
And the fact that it's two middle aged men, who have both been on their own specifically queer journeys, gives it a whole other layer of meaning and importance.
As queer people, so many of us were denied the opportunity to have these experiences when we were kids; standing on the sidelines and watching our peers go through all these rites of passage, whilst never quite able to reach out and touch it ourselves. And I think many of us live in perpetual fear that because we didn't to get to have this as kids, then we've missed out, and we will never get the chance to have those experiences in the same way.
But it isn't too late.
My mum came out as gay at 50, and I watched her go through the same thing when she met her first ever girlfriend (who is now her wife): the absolute excited youthful joy of being in love and getting to do all the things she never got a chance to do when she was younger. As a twenty year old, I was a bit annoyed and embarrassed by my mum suddenly turning into a lovesick teenager, but looking back on it now as a thirty-something, it actually makes me well up slightly thinking about how absolutely beautiful it was.
And that's why the 'boyfriend' moment puts me in such an emotional headspace. Because what this silly show did was cup my face gently in its hands and say 'it's never too late to have this'.
I'm so, so glad that we have so much representation for younger queers these days; that young queers get to see themselves represented on screen, having all these experiences that every young person deserves to have. But it's so much rarer for us to see older queers represented in this way, too. Older queers getting to have this is so important, and watching these two men in their 40s experience this, being allowed to revel in the giddy joy of first love - omg we're boyfriends! - like the happy lovesick teenagers they thought they'd forever lost the chance to be, it's just everything to me.

As a diehard Izzy hands fan from the first time I watched the show, who’s main fan interaction with OFMD has been about Izzy (ie basically any fanfic i’ve written is Izzy related, a lot of my original posts are izzy related etc) I AM SO DEVASTATED WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE IT

You don't understand, they didn't put the music of the scene where Ed lies on the beach in purgatory and the music of the scene when Ed comes out of the ocean in his leathers on the soundtrack! They're both just not there!
I need that music.
I want that music. It is fantastic music. Why wouldn't they put it on the soundtrack? Why make a soundtrack if you just leave the best parts out?
I know the Kraken-music is the Swede's aria from the season 1 fuckery, but it is not just the instrumental version of the original classical piece, it's very different. And they incorporated their own versions of Gnossienne No. 5 and Händel's Sarabande in this seasons soundtrack album, so why not this?
And I considered that the part playing over Ed on the purgatory-beach might be another classical piece, but now I doubt it, because no one seems to be able to identify it.
