Rigel had a lovely time flying around with her friend, @tishinada's Zas, who helped her get some of the blue mage spells she needed in areas and dungeons that she couldn't do alone right now. They had fun! I'm tackling Blue Mage because everything else is at level 90 and I don't want to to go ahead with post-Endwalkers - specifically because I don't want to run out of MSQ yet but also because I know Rigel will hit a trial at some point and be barred from going on (since those trials can't be done unsynced with less people, and a lot of her FC friends are on breaks right now). Blue mage's setup is...interesting to say the least. And it's going to be a long slog. She's at level 25 now, and the class is currently capped at 80. I'm glad I'm getting into it, though, because the NPCs and storyline seem to have clues that could help learn more about Dawntrail next year. I've also heard that Blue Mage can be ridiculously overpowered in content, so perhaps she will be able to do a few of the things that Rigel has not been able to accomplish with her main class. And unlike some of the other jobs (cough cough MONK, where Rigel stopped doing the story at level 50 because she just couldn't stand to continue working with those NPCs) - Rigel gets to tell off the NPC when he pisses her off.

Shout out to these ladies @tishinada @rainofaugustsith and Lyria for another successful hunt. The Great Hunt this time. Taking down dragon’s with the power of friendship....and brute force. A LOT of brute force.
Anyway, we decided to get out “fisherman’s picture” with our price and the cute little cat who sent us after the man eating dragon.

FFXIV Write Entry #16: Primal Catechism
Prompt: deiform || Master Post || On AO3
A/N: Spoilers for Endwalker (including a bit of timeline editing for my own purposes), plus some more arcanima nonsense combined with Synnove’s personal distate for egis. :D
--
It was the most common debate Synnove had with Y’mhitra: was the use of an egi in the style of Allagan summoning a form of blasphemy?
Neither woman was inherently religious, so the debate generally stayed in the realm of “academic exercise,” but there was something about the way an egi was harnessed that Synnove found…inherently distasteful. While normally there could be a certain poetic justice in using your enemy’s tools against them, it soured with the knowledge that said tools had been created originally out of desperation. There was, too, the genuine unease in the creation of even a pseudo-simulacrum of a being that she knew would have known joy at her demise. Synnove remembered the earthquakes that had shaken La Noscea in the years before the Calamity, and no one in Limsa Lominsa ever knowing if it was natural, or the Lord of Crags being summoned beneath U’Ghamaro once more.
And thirdly…for all that Synnove did not consider herself religious, egis were fragments of someone else’s gods. Synnove knew, intimately, what it felt like to have pieces of her culture ripped away from her, even as Aunt Angharad did her damnedest to take them back and save what she could. Unease had sat deep in her chest the first time she had summoned an egi under Y’mhitra’s watchful, excited gaze, an Allagan soulstone clutched in her hand.
There was no getting rid of the pieces of primal aether that lingered amongst her own; that Y’mhitra, and the memories contained in the soulstone, made abundantly clear. So Synnove had done what she always did: she ripped it all apart and made it her own. It had taken moons to properly break down the soulstone’s memories into usable math (made more difficult being on the run from the XIVth Legion in the wake of the slaughter at the Waking Sands), but in the end, she had a viable system of arrays that would augment her carbuncles with an egi’s power levels, rather than replace them with a primal facsimile.
But now Synnove and her sisters and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn stood on the precipice of the ultimate mission: travel to the edge of the universe, where the Meteiae nested, and avert the Final Days once and for all. And the old system wasn’t going to be enough.
And then the tribal leaders of Eorzea (and Othard) arrived in Labyrinthos with Livingway, to provide the method by which they would transfer all the coalesced aether from the Mothercrystal and into the ark’s aetherburner: summoning their gods via faith through the lens of loporitt creation magic, which wasn’t riddled with all the Ascian-created caveats of bending others to their will and plans. Which was, to digresses for a moment, insane. And brilliant.
(Synnove was a scientist, and well knew the line between insanity and brilliance was very, very thin. The loporitts danced across the line perhaps a little too easily.)
But it presented a unique opportunity, and since there was two days until it was time to launch, Synnove said fuck it, because it couldn’t hurt to ask.
2nd Order Patriarch Za Da was a known entity, and while he remained wary of non-kobolds (particularly the Lominsan-flavored ones like herself), he agreed to meet with her. So, too, did Flame Ritualist Nayojj Chah of the amalj’aa, and High Priestess Tateli Huatotl of the ixal. They met in one of Aporia’s meeting rooms, and there Synnove, with her three original carbuncles on their best behavior, carefully laid out the history of Allagan summoning, the function of egis, and how her carbuncles differed from the Allagan model.
Patriarch Za Da had met her carbuncles on prior occasions (both in battle and not), but Tyr he now examined much more critically. Her eldest son dwarfed the kobold, but he sat patiently, his tails gently waving on the ambient aether current, as the priest appeared to stare straight through him.
“Yes, I can sense, perceive, notice it now,” he said at last, sitting back in his chair. “A piece, a part, a fragment of Father Titan, but it is not his soul. More similar to a blessing, a warding, a benefit granted to His favored.”
Synnove minutely relaxed; that had always been a worry of hers, that she had junctioned some foreign soul material to her carbuncles, but there had never been any way to tell.
Priestess Tateli was petting Galette thoughtfully, the emerald carbuncle purring with her eyes squinted shut in pleasure. “Similar to the goddess, is your daughter,” she said, clacking her beak. “Why the magic has worked so seamlessly, I believe.”
“Aye,” Ritualist Nayojj said with a nod, their growling voice reminding Synnove of a crackling furnace. Ivar was in a blissed-out state getting a belly rub from them. “Based on what you have told us of your carbuncles, by pure chance, their personalities compliment those of our gods—when our gods are at their best.”
Priestess Tateli hissed. “A mockery of Lady Tempest, the zealots have made!” she said. “A cycle of pain, our fear has made! Remember the stories of her as she truly is, few now do. Vain and proud, she is! But not cruel!”
Ritualist Nayojj shook their head. “And we could spend a moon or more lamenting the mistakes we have made, ourselves and our people and our former enemies,” they said. “We do not have the time for such this day.” And then they looked right at Synnove and said, “What is it that you desire?”
And Synnove told them.
All three sat quietly, absorbing what she had said, the seconds stretching into minutes. Synnove sat patiently; she was confident, at least, that if they said no, she had not given offense. And this was something she did not want them to quickly acquiesce to. She asked a boon the likes of which not even the most devout would dare to desire.
It was Patriach Za Da who finally spoke. “Mistress Greywolfe,” he said quietly, “you have shown yourself to be respectful, considerate, courteous, and for that I thank you. On this matter, I cannot promise, assure, declare that Father Titan will agree to do what I ask beyond the fueling of the ark. But I will ask.”
Priestess Tateli and Ritualist Nayojj nodded in assent.
Synnove stood then, and bowed respectfully to each of them. “That is all that I ask,” she said. “Thank you for your time.”
--
Two days later, the Scions and Warriors of Light and the loporitt crew of the Ragnarok watched with awe via the monitors as the Mothercrystal became the epicenter of the greatest summoning on Etheirys since Zodiark and Hydaelyn. And then for a brief time, the sky was full of primals, chasing the ark, before dissipating to join the aetherburner.
And if some extra motes of light settled on the three carbuncles at Synnove’s feet, that was between Synnove and the Lord of the Inferno, and the Lord of Crags, and the Lady of the Vortex.
(And the Endsinger, when Synnove decided now was the perfect moment to tap into that granted power boost.)
(But that would be later.)

I've been eyeing the Calfskin Rider's jacket since I started the game, but even once I had the money for it (it has been priced over 1 million gil sometimes on Famfrit), I couldn't bring myself to spend that much.
Then this morning, my retainer brought it to Zas, lol. I came really close to selling it, then reminded myself that I'd break down eventually and buy it, so my retainers saved me 850K :D
And it was worth it! I thought about dyeing it, but it just looks so good in black and she already had the pants to match.

Junelezen day 8: Beauty
After the Calamity, Zas spent the next five years traveling, spending months at a time aboard ships as a merc traveling with the merchants who employed her, and the sea got in her blood, learning everything she could from the sailors when she had nothing else to do. She now thinks the oceans and other bodies of water are the most beautiful part of the star.
Much later, she was offered a house in Ishgard. But Limsa was her real home, so she choose to turn the house into a public arboretum instead, trying to recreate some of the beauty of distant lands for Ishgardians, particularly the small folk without the resources to travel. Each floor had an elemental theme (though water ties them all together), with the upstairs air (fae) themed*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main floor is her personal favorite, using greens and blues with green lighting to create a water/deep sea theme. Lots of aquariums and koi ponds.**
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cellar is both earth and fire, a cave garden.***
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every floor has water features---waterfalls and ponds of some sort. And lots of places to sit and chat with friends and enjoy the gardens.
*No one’s realized that many of the plants in use are from a reflection rather than the Source. But who in Ishgard has traveled enough to realize that they aren’t native, lol?
**The lighting is very low throughout which makes for difficult photography. But it’s part of the atmosphere, almost a necessity to get that pale greenish lighting for the deep sea garden. But I kind of think any WoL coming back from the First would crave dim lighting, plus Zas is a Duskwight. I assume they are somewhat more adapted to caves (Gelmorra) than most other races.
***The fire part is unfortunately sparse because I started hitting the limit for items lol. If they do increase the number of items for houses with 7.0, I’ll be adding to the cellar in particular.

day 3: Spring
“Such a lovely spring day!”
Tumblr media
“...I wonder, Argos, are the colors still as bright, the perfumes as sweet? Or are they only a dull reflection of what you shared?”
Tumblr media
(Endwalker spoilers below the cut (sort of))
“How she would have thrown her arms wide and inhaled the sweet perfumes of spring!”
“I miss her too...but as long as we’re both here, a little part of her lives on.”

Junelezen 7: friends
For someone who is reserved and expects people to judge her for her rather humble origins, etc., Zas has a lot of good friends. But none are as close as her young protege’ Salix (Miqo’te belonging to @cinlat) who she met and adopted when she found him in the Shroud, being overwhelmed by Ixali.
(Zas and Salix when they first met)
Tumblr media
Then these two introverts were adopted in turn by an extremely extroverted Lalafell, Koko (belonging to @kunoichi-ume), who wandered up while they were fishing one day and adopted them (to their utter bafflement). Now they both would do anything to rescue her from the trouble that seems to trail after her constantly (not that that would have anything to do with her impulsiveness or enthusiasm lol.) (Story by cinlat about adapting to their boisterous friend)
(shortly after they met Koko, in the FC chamber they shared)
Tumblr media
When she met Salix, she had just picked up the bow for the first time herself, having previously fought as a marauder for several years, and he was struggling with his father’s lance. Salix turned out to have a knack for healing with herbs (a really sweet story Cinlat wrote about this discovery) and with Zas’s encouragement, he took up conjury. Healing suited the quiet shy young man much better.
(Later after Salix took up conjury while Zas was dabbling with machinist)
Tumblr media
Koko, on the other hand, was trying to conquer thaumaturgy, a choice complicated by the fact she lacked the patience to sit and study books for any length of time. Impulsively, she picked up Salix’s abandoned lance one day when the other two were out (story by @kunoichi-ume), and they found her in the midst of much (unintentional) destruction, having found the weapon that truly suited her. Out of self-defense, they made sure she got proper training, lol.
(Koko’s accidental prank lol)
Tumblr media
(screenshots by Cinlat)
The three of them are inseparable. The other two might be happier with a little less excitement than life with Koko brings them (story by cinlat). But they wouldn’t trade life with her for anything
(Salix finding Koko a less hair-raising costume to wear lol)

And second set of screenshots from All Saint's Wake, again with @rainofaugustsith's Rigel as Merlwyb, these also taken by Rain (thank you, yours are so much better!)
Tumblr media
Firelight is a good compromise on the lighting for these two.
Tumblr media
We couldn't get Merl's changing expressions to show up when I was in gpose, but I really love how these came out.
Tumblr media
I think this one may be my favorite because of Merl's expression :D
Tumblr media
Ooops, someone walked in on them. Zas has that embarrassed "you didn't see that" grin, while Merl is suggesting this is NOT the right time...
Tumblr media
And back to the topic at hand...

Thank you again!!! I love this once-a-year chance to get screenshots :D

I’ve been meaning to post screenshots of Zas’s house, if for no other reason than I want a record of how it looks now. Because my plans are to turn the entire thing into a botanical garden, with the upstairs vaguely Il Mheg themed, the main floor water themed, and the cellar cave themes, lol. But that stuff is going to take time to acquire and some of it is expensive, so only the upstairs is a (generic) garden so far.
Starting with the main floor, as you enter:
Tumblr media
Normally I have the lighting turned down. Zas is a Duskwight, so I assume their eyes are better suited to dim lighting. But I turned them up to get her music area.
Tumblr media
The kitchen and eating area. Zas is not a cook, so the Ishgardian stove is enough to make tea and coffee and heat food up.
Tumblr media
A sitting area, with her rare ocean fish displayed.
Tumblr media
I’ll reblog with the garden screenshots...

Junelezen day 15: Romance
Zas never believed in love at first sight...and that hasn’t changed. Still, her first sight of the Admiral haunted her dreams for the next five years. Fortunately, Merlwyb hadn’t noticed her in return as the Lominsan forces were mustering for Carteneau. While a Duskwight marauder was certainly rare enough to catch the eye in the pirate city, it was also easy to hide behind her taller Roe comrades...which she did frequently from embarrassment as she had unluckily just hit her early-20s growth spurt and could barely walk without tripping or knocking something over. This bad luck consigned her to a support role---no one wants to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with an axeman who loses control of their axe after all---but ironically almost certainly saved her life. Her old unit was the first from Lominsa hit by Bahamut’s blast, robbing her of the only real friend she’d had. Her guilt and horror at helping retrieve bodies from the battlefield led her away from Lominsa for a time, taking to the road as a mercenary.
But her memory of the Admiral, commanding and self-confident and unflinchingly fearless, eventually drew her back. Well, that and the onset of waking dreams in which the coral towers of the city almost always featured. She hadn’t admitted even to herself that she hoped for another glimpse of the Admiral when she returned, but she certainly never imagined she’d come face-to-face with the Admiral. Or so embarrassingly.
Tumblr media
In her defense, she had turned, expecting the person behind her to be the Commodore, a much shorter Hyur, but she was exhausted from consecutive fights, including that strange man Y’shtola called an Ascian, and found herself staring numbly. She could have sunk through the floor a second or two later, but when she made her eyes meet the Admiral’s, there was more than a glint of amusement in those blue eyes.
Tumblr media
It took very little time in the Admiral’s presence for Zas to become completely smitten, but somehow Merlwyb’s rather outrageous flirting still went over her head. After all, who was she? Just a vagabond, an adventurer. Someone with no family, no money. A Duskwight, a word she couldn’t even think without hearing the scorn most people used. Bandit the tone implied. Uncivilized. Untrustworthy. Different. Zas herself took pride in what she could remember of her people, little as that was, but somehow it never occurred to her that outsiders also said Lominsan the same way. Pirates. Barbarians. Untrustworthy.
Tumblr media
Eventually, Merlwyb had to take matters into her own hands in a way that left Zas with no doubts that the interest was returned. Merl, after all, was far better at reading Zas’s flustered response to the slightest hint of interest from Merl, and while that was amusingly flattering, clearly nothing short of directness was going to end the standoff.
Tumblr media
Things quickly progressed from smitten affection to serious, though again, Zas didn’t really expect more from Merl than pleasant evenings and nights together when their respective responsibilities allowed.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t until their reunion during the search for Raubahn that Merlwyb finally managed to make it clear that this was not a simple fling for her either.
They’ve never looked back, and their only regrets are how little time they are able to have together, especially since both live such dangerous lives. Zas has slowly learned skills in shipbuilding and navigating, and one day, perhaps they’ll both retire to quieter lives. Together.
Though somehow “quiet” isn’t a word that either is really familiar with...

Forget character flaws: What is your character's best trait? What is something that they are proud of, no matter how small? Are they currently working on something to improve themselves/their life?
Ah, thank you!
Zas is my Duskwight bard, a former merc.
Zas's best trait is her fierce defensiveness of her friends, particularly her young protege', Salix (a miqo'te healer belonging to @cinlat) and their young friend, Koko (a lalafellan lancer belonging to @kunoichi-ume).
She's particularly proud of the Duskwight history, literature, and music she's recovered and is trying to make available to other Duskwights again. Better not to ask how she accessed private Ul'dahn collections or the restricted sections of Sharlayan libraries where most material was locked away as "treasures", lol.
Related to that, she practices constantly so she can do justice to Duskwight music when she gets the chance to perform those songs, hoping to remind people that Duskwights were, and are, more than just "bandits".
Thank you!
