The Yule and Winter Solstice Menu: Recipes for the Winter Holidays
The holiday season offers dishes that warm the body and comfort the soul. At the Winter Solstice the focus is on rich, hearty, and nurturing. The season celebrates displays and masterful cooking through roasted dishes, slow cooked stews, bright salads with pops of fruity flavor, and sweets that double as delicious gifts. Seasonal fruits and vegetables include beets, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Citrus Fruits, Cranberries, dates, escarole, fennel, horseradish, kale, parsnips, pears, persimmons, pomegranate, radishes, sweet potatoes, and winter squash.
At this time of the year I like to honor the traditions and the foods that my family cooked. I love the nostalgic feeling of creating recipes that my parents had at Christmastime, so you may find recipes inspired by that. Do you have a dish that reminds you of the winter season and December holidays? Is there something you traditionally make for your Yule or Winter Solstice celebrations that I didn’t put on this list? Please let me know and I will add it!

Pantry Staple Baking
We’ve rounded up a collection of recipes that utilize your everyday pantry ingredients. In the recipes below, feel free to switch up your spices, jams, nuts, garnishes, and more with whatever you happen to have stocked in your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to customize the flavor profiles to fit your baking needs!
Caramelized Banana Bread
Tumblr media
Crowned with golden Caramelized Banana halves and offering a hint of cinnamon flavor, this loaf is all about taking the banana to the nth power of sweetness. If you don’t have sour cream, you can substitute full fat regular yogurt or crème fraîche.
2. Hazelnut-Banana Sour Cream Muffins
Tumblr media
With a toasty Hazelnut Streusel topping and the tender crumb of banana bread, these muffins are a welcome treat for any morning. If you don’t have hazelnuts, feel free to swap them out with whatever nut you have on hand.
3. Johnny Bread
Tumblr media
Every Sunday morning in households and eateries across Bermuda, johnny bread is served with boiled potatoes, bananas, and codfish. With a golden-brown exterior and tender, fluffy crumb, johnny bread is versatile enough to enjoy with dinner or as a snack smeared with jam or honey. Traditionally, Bermudians cook the dough shaped into a disk or cut into a scone-like wedge in a hot skillet. For our recipe, we bake the bread for a few minutes after frying.
4. Cardamom Flourless Chocolate Cake
Tumblr media
The beauty of this cake is the crackled top, which, combined with the cardamom-scented cake, yields the perfect mix of crispy, soft, chocolaty goodness in a single bite. If you’re running low on flour, this is the cake for you!
5. Classic Soda Bread
Tumblr media
A traditional take on quick bread, this soda bread recipe is brought to life by buttermilk and baking soda. These two ingredients combine to create a crunchy crust and a subtle tartness that’s definitively mouthwatering. Plus, this recipe requires only a few pantry ingredients and you can make your own buttermilk by adding 1 tablespoon (15 grams) white distilled vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup (240 grams) whole milk.
6. PB&J Blondies
Tumblr media
This blondie recipe makes the most of two pantry staples: peanut butter and jelly! In a throwback to your favorite childhood lunchbox item, we added luscious swirls of grape jelly and extra peanut butter to the top of our peanut butter-rich batter. Swap out the grape jelly for your favorite flavor.
7. Chocolate Olive Oil Cake
Tumblr media
A grown-up chocolate cake, this olive oil stir-together batter has sophisticated cocoa notes complemented by a deep, dark ganache frosting. If you’re running low on butter, this cake is good option because it relies on olive oil for its fat content.
8. Cinnamon Jam Loaf
Tumblr media
Filled with sweet, jammy swirls and topped with a nutty streusel, this quick bread makes for a hearty breakfast or tasty dessert. Substitute the jam for whatever fruit preserves or spreads you have at home. If you’re out of cinnamon, use nutmeg, allspice, or cardamom to spice things up instead.
9. Orange-Cardamom Loaves
Tumblr media
Dripping with sweet Orange Glaze and scented with warm cardamom and vanilla, these loaves are absolutely mouthwatering. This recipe also relies on pantry staple vegetable oil rather than butter to impart tenderness to the crumb.
10. Sour Cherry Shortbread Linzer Cookies
Tumblr media
These are the best sandwich cookies you’ll make this summer. A tiny bit of citric acid in the cookie dough creates a zesty sour cherry flavor, which balances out the buttery shortbread cookies. You can fill these linzer cookies with any jam or  preserve you like, and you can nix the citric acid in the cookie if you don’t have any!
11. Toasted Almond Sablés
Tumblr media
Président® butter makes these sparkling sablés the ultimate buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookies. Here, it imparts a creaminess that complements the flavor of toasted almonds exquisitely. Président is France’s number one butter and our go-to for all crumbly French cookies.
12. Lime Shortbread Bars
Tumblr media
Classic shortbread gets a summertime makeover in these zesty Lime Shortbread Bars. Adding lime zest to the dough adds a bite of freshness and plays up the buttery flavor of shortbread you know and crave. You can freeze the uncooked dough and bake off as you need!
13. Cheesy Beer Bread
Tumblr media
This cheesy loaf comes together easily but packs a whole lot of flavor! Use your favorite pale ale and Monterey Jack cheese, or whatever you happen to have on hand.
14. Marble Sheet Cake
Tumblr media
Swirls of rich chocolate batter and sweet almond batter combine to create this stunning sheet cake. Top with a dusting of confectioner’s sugar for a simple yet elegant finish. You can flavor the almond batter with any other extract you happen to have on hand.
15. Peanut Butter Cookies
Tumblr media
Chewy, cakey, and full of addictive nuttiness, this fuss-free recipe checks off all the boxes for the ultimate peanut butter cookie. Plus, it’s the supersize bakery style you know and love. You’ll turn to these again and again when the late-night cravings call.
16. Blueberry Muffin Bread
Tumblr media
For all the blueberry muffin fans out there, this one’s for you. With a tender, buttery crumb packed with juicy blueberries and a crunchy sugar-coated top, this Blueberry Muffin Bread is the loaf pan version of everyone’s favorite muffin.
17. Oatmeal Cherry Walnut Cookies
Tumblr media
These Oatmeal Cherry Walnut Cookies by Marian Cooper Cairns are the summer cookie you’ll be eating all season long. Who needs raisins when you can have a much bigger, even sweeter flavor impact with plump dried cherries? If walnuts are not your jam, pecans or hazelnuts are great substitutes. Be sure to toast the nuts for optimal flavor. Baking at 350°F (180°C) until the nuts smell slightly fragrant, about 8 minutes, will do the trick.
18. Classic Olive Oil Cake
Tumblr media
A staple in most Mediterranean kitchens, this light and barely sweet cake is perfect for an afternoon snack or late morning tea. A final brush of olive oil just before serving brings the fruity flavor to the front of your palate as soon as you take a bite. Olive oil takes the place of butter in this rich cake.
19. Flourless Fudgy Cookies
Tumblr media
Chocolate lovers will swoon over the rich texture of these Flourless Fudgy Cookies! Top with walnuts, your favorite nut, or whatever nut you happen to have on hand.
20. Do-It-All-Dough
Tumblr media
This miracle recipe can go sweet or savory, depending on the baker’s whim. This flexible enriched dough will become the most trusted recipe in your bread repertoire. Luxuriously rich with milk, butter, an egg, and just a dash of sugar, the Do-It-All Dough can become the tender base for both Almond Cream Rolls and Garlic Herb Clover Rolls. So feel free to fill and top with any of your favorite ingredients.
21. Sour Cream Coffee Cake
Tumblr media
This endlessly customizable classic comes together in a flash. The warm notes of vanilla complement the subtle tanginess from the sour cream beautifully in the irresistibly tender crumb. When topped with the nutty crunch from the almond-cinnamon streusel, it’s pure magic.
22. Classic Vanilla Pound Cake
Tumblr media
You can choose your flavor with this incredibly simple, perfectly sweet pound cake. Go almond, lemon, or vanilla. Top with your favorite glaze, chocolate sauce, or a sprinkle of confectioner’s sugar. The possibilities are endless!

Dessert on Thanksgiving is practically synonymous with pie—for many of us, it’s the only day in the year that we eat pumpkin pie (some happily, some begrudgingly), but apple, pecan, and all sorts of other more unusual pies might find their way to the table. (My childhood Thanksgivings always featured about half a dozen kinds.) There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a classic, but pie is hardly the only way to end your Thanksgiving dinner, and dessert is always more fun with multiple options. We’ve rounded up 19 dessert recipes to help you expand your horizons—whether you want to keep it fall-appropriate with creamy pumpkin cheesecake or spicy gingersnaps, or throw tradition completely to the wind with rich chocolate brownies and tiramisu.
Fruit Desserts
The Best Apple Crisp
Want all the flavors of apple pie with a lot less work? A crisp is the way to go. The spiced apple filling we use here, with added complexity from a shot of whiskey, is every bit as delicious, and the crumb topping—made with turbinado sugar and chopped pecans—provides a more interesting textural contrast. Short on oven space? Try making your fruit crisp on the stovetop instead.

Gluten-Free Apple Fritters
Apple fritters aren’t traditionally associated with the holiday, but they’re certainly seasonally appropriate, not to mention tasty. Studded throughout with crisp bits of apple and lightly glazed, these particular fritters are gluten-free thanks to their base of Chebe mix, made with modified manioc (cassava) starch instead of wheat flour. Keeping the fritters small allows a good ratio of crispy fried exterior to fluffy crumb.

Apple Oatmeal Cookies
If you plan to be a guest rather than a host on Thanksgiving and have been tasked with bringing a dessert, consider cookies, which are easy to make in bulk and travel well. Both chopped Granny Smith apples and applesauce go into these chewy treats, doubling up on the apple flavor.

Pear, Riesling, and Ginger Sorbet
After a heavy Thanksgiving meal, I secretly long for something light and refreshing, not rich, in my dessert, and this juicy sorbet fits the bill. To make it, we combine chopped pears with sweet-tart Riesling and spicy ginger. We like a good deal of ginger to help cut through the sweet fruit and minerally wine, but feel free to scale it back if you prefer a milder ginger flavor.

Chocolate Treats
Olive Oil Cake With Roasted Grapes and Ganache
[Photograph: Carrie Vasios Mullins]
It may read like an odd jumble of ingredients, but this cake perfectly bridges the gap between a fruity dessert and a rich and chocolaty one, for those who want the best of both worlds. Olive oil gives the cornmeal-based cake a complex savory backbone that plays well with the sweet roasted grapes. A glaze of bittersweet ganache makes the whole thing feel a little fancier.

Salted Dulce de Leche Brownies
Honestly, my preferred way to eat dulce de leche—a caramel-like concoction made by simmering condensed milk in water—is straight from the jar or can with a spoon, but I have to admit that these brownies make a more civilized, presentable option. The brownie dough is super fudgy and rich, with a thick layer of dulce de leche swirled on top, plus a generous sprinkling of sea salt to offset all that sweetness.

Quick and Easy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Our ultimate chocolate chip cookies are indeed fantastic, but they need to be started a day in advance, and you may not have that kind of time if you’re looking for a fast, easy, and crowd-pleasing dessert. Making the cookies with larger chunks of chopped chocolate bars, instead of commercial chips, produces wonderful melty pockets in the finished cookies; the dust that you generate while chopping is just a bonus, as it ensures that every bite has a little cocoa flavor. An unexpected ingredient—nutmeg—helps deepen the rich butter flavor.

Sweet and Salty Stout Marshmallow Bars With Pretzels, Potato Chips, and Chocolate
[Photograph: Morgan Eisenberg]
Like cookies, bars are a travel-friendly choice if you’re heading to a friend’s or relative’s house on Thanksgiving, and these bars, which nail that perfect grown-up balance of sweet and salty, are destined to be a hit. Inspired by Rice Krispie Treats, they swap out the puffed rice for the deep savoriness of potato chips and pretzels. Our homemade marshmallow binder only heightens the effect—it’s made with stout beer instead of water.

Rich and Creamy Tiramisu
Our version of this Italian favorite pairs ladyfingers with mascarpone and a coffee syrup made with sweet crème de cacao and toasty Cardamaro. By reducing the number of egg yolks typically used for tiramisu, we keep the focus on the mellow flavor of the mascarpone. If you really want to impress, build the dessert with homemade ladyfingers; given how much other cooking you may have to do on Thanksgiving, it’s totally fine to buy them from an Italian bakery (or even the supermarket) instead.

Pumpkin Layer Cake
True cake lovers will take this fluffy pumpkin layer cake over pumpkin pie any day. A blend of ginger, cinnamon, and cloves gives it that classic pumpkin-spice taste, while adding lots of egg yolks to the batter mimics the custardy texture and flavor of pumpkin pie. A tangy cream cheese buttercream frosting cuts through the warm spices and earthy pumpkin purée beautifully.

Brown Butter Carrot Cake
Brown butter is the secret to this show-stopping carrot cake, reinforcing the flavor of the earthy-sweet carrots, nutty pecans, and toasty whole wheat flour. That flour is an important touch, too: It absorbs moisture better than white flour, preventing the cake from getting weighed down by water from the carrots. This recipe does require a fair amount of prep work, but the tedious task of peeling and shredding the carrots can be done up to a week in advance.

Gingerbread Sheet Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting
[Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
This big cake requires only 15 minutes of active time, so it’s easy to balance with all your other holiday responsibilities. Just because it’s simple to make doesn’t mean it’s boring, though—it’s got a fluffy buttermilk crumb, a deep sweetness from molasses, and a nice kick from a combination of spices, including an unusual addition of Chinese five-spice powder.

Pumpkin Cheesecake With Gingersnap Crust
This holiday-appropriate cheesecake is made with pumpkin purée and the standard pumpkin pie spices you’d expect, like ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. It’s the gingersnap-and-brown-sugar crust, plus the crunchy candied-walnut topping, that makes it truly special. For maximum fall-spice infusion, we use the above trio of spices in the crust, filling, and topping.

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Icing
[Photograph: Elizabeth Barbone]
A base of white rice flour and cornstarch makes these cupcakes gluten-free, but it also offers the added benefit of giving them a neutral flavor, which lets the pumpkin purée, pumpkin spice mix, and ginger shine. To keep these cupcakes dairy-free as well, make the cream cheese icing with vegan butter and cream cheese.

The Best Gingersnaps
We want two things from our gingersnaps: a seriously spicy kick, and a texture that truly snaps. To achieve the latter, we use whole wheat flour and cream the butter and sugar for several minutes, ensuring that the cookies turn out especially crispy. A mixture of ground and grated fresh ginger provides all the spiciness we crave.

Easy 1-Bowl Oatmeal Cookies
Our favorite oatmeal cookies rely primarily on one trick: resting the dough after it’s formed into balls on the baking sheets, allowing the oats time to soak up moisture and tenderize. Give your unbaked cookies about 45 minutes to sit before baking, and you’ll be rewarded with perfectly chewy specimens. Dried cranberries feel more festive than the usual raisins, and they have just enough tartness to balance out the sweet dough.

Apple-Ginger Tishpishti (Gluten-Free Almond and Walnut Cake)
Tishpishti is a traditional Sephardic cake, in the spirit of nutty, sweet, syrupy North African and Middle Eastern desserts like baklava. It’s a gently spiced, gingery dessert perfect for your gluten-free guests.

What Slow Cooker/Pressure Cooker Do You Use?
I use a 6 quart oval Kitchenaid slow cooker.* I love this slow cooker. It cooks low and evenly. I love the medium heat choice because most slow cookers that I’ve seen only have the option of cooking on low or high. If you’re going to buy just one slow cooker, this is the one that I recommend.
And I use a 6 quart Instant Pot Duo 60 7 in 1*. I love this Instant Pot because it has the yogurt making function which I use almost weekly.  It has two pressure settings (high and low), and there are also little slots in the handles so that you can rest the lid there instead of putting it down on your counter-top.

Cookie Exchange Party Ideas & Recipes
I’m sharing my Cookie Exchange Party Ideas & Recipes for a fun holiday party this season! Gather your gal pals and host an afternoon of sweets, treats, and good eats!
Who needs/wants a sugar fix? I’m drooling over all these cookies right now and wishing I was in the middle of this Christmas party! I created this last year for Recipe Girl and I’ve got more highlights, tips, and recipe links below.
I think you’ll find my cookie exchange party ideas & recipes to be practical, thoughtful, and most of all, do-able! Gather up your girl friends and start planning now!
Cookie Exchange Party Ideas & Recipes
Plan and send out invitations as early as possible. Use digital invitations like Evite, or just create a group text or Facebook “event” page. The group options are nice because guests can interact and compare notes with each other as to what cookie flavor they’ll be making.
Keep it small and intimate so guests aren’t overwhelmed by baking. Six to eight people is a good number for a small cookie exchange party at home, although you could kick it up to 12 or 15 if you feel comfortable with it.
Have enough cookies for tasting and taking home. Guests will need to bake a lot of cookies which is why I like a smaller party. Remember, guests will want to try each cookie once or twice, plus take a few of each type home with them. Plan accordingly with the number of people in attendance.
Have some other snacks and salty treats available to eat. Snacks or appetizers that are easy to pick up are best. Popcorn is a nice addition, as are these caviar-topped potato chips. Just use thick cut wavy potato chips, top with sour cream or crème fraîche, and a dollop of caviar. There you have an elegant, salty snack that helps cut all the sweetness.
Set up a beverage bar that compliments the cookies. I like this eggnog and coffee bar complete with add-in options like Kahlua coffee liqueur, Godiva chocolate liqueur, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Amaretto almond liqueur, or Frangelico hazelnut liqueur. All of these taste great added to coffee or eggnog.
Have a cookie gifting station so guests can pack them to take home. I picked up these cute kraft boxes at Hobby Lobby and they’re a great size and shape for packaging the cookies. You can line them with tissue, parchment, or wax paper, and offer up ribbon to tie them closed.
Ask guests to bring their recipes pre-printed, or send them to you ahead of time via email so you can print them out for each person to take home. Use these free printable recipe cards if you like.
The idea is for everyone to make cookies from scratch, but let’s face it, some of our favorite people can’t/don’t bake, or life get’s too hectic, etc. Welcome all skill levels and remind your friends that it’s the “fun” aspect of the party that’s important, and that they can improvise with semi-homemade treats if they must. I admit I love a good slice-n-bake cookie! Here are some delicious cookie recipes to try, and I’ve even included a semi-homemade treat too.
Cookie Recipes to try:
whole wheat double dark chocolate brownie cookies because, chocolate!
classic shortbread cookies melt in your mouth and are loved by all.
easy chocolate-dipped biscotti for the non-bakers or when you’ve run out of time.
peanut butter double chip cookies are a tried and true favorite around here.
oatmeal chocolate chip cookies just sound healthy, amiright!
secret recipe chocolate chip cookies because everyone loves a secret!
Cheers! and good luck with your party!

Coolest New Ice Creams in New York
Ample Hills, Morgenstern’s, Van Leeuwen and Blue Marble have as much name recognition as Haagen Daaz in New York.  And the following dessert destinations are positioned to join the local ice cream pantheon, from La Newyorkina and its traditional Mexican helado to Taiyaki, and its fish-shaped Japanese waffle cones.
La Newyorkina
14 W 19th St West Village,NY 10010
(212) 243-6844
Long known as the queen of paletas (Mexican popsicles), Fany Gerson expanded into helado (ice cream) at her West Village brick-and-mortar this past fall. And it’s finally prime season to taste gelato-like scoops made with Oaxacan chocolate, horchata, tres leches, and vanilla beans from Veracruz, spun in a traditional metal cylinder called a garaffa, and topped with beyond-sprinkles additions such as spicy candied mango, puffed amaranth, goats milk caramel, and cherry hibiscus compote.

DO
550 LaGuardia Pl Greenwich Village,New York 10012
(646) 892-3600
Not only will you find pints of straight-up, unbaked cookie dough (meant for transitioning from container to mouth), the childhood guilty pleasure is incorporated into all matter of frozen dairy treats, including ice cream sundaes (gobbed with batter like Fluffernutter, Snickerdoodle, or Oatmeal M&M), ice cream sandwiches (organic Blue Marble Cookie DŌ ice cream, stacked between squares of their signature chocolate chip dough) and ice cream shakes; essentially a pulverized mish-mash of either of the above.

Mr. Dips
111 N 12th St Williamsburg,New York 11249
No Phone
Andrew Carmellini is having a high time slumming it at his William Vale-located Mr. Dips — a refurbished airstream trailer parked on the hotel’s mezzanine.  Instead of composed chef fare, you’ll find smashed burgers, waffle fries, and most notably, “Dairy Dip” ice cream cones coated with flavored Magic Shell, and dubbed “Berry Gibbs” (boozy strawberries with vanilla wafers and whipped cream), or Jacker-Crax (buttered caramel popcorn and a scattering of toasted peanuts).

Soft Swerve
85B Allen St Lower East Side,New York 10002
(646) 476-6311
Your average Mr. Softee it ain’t.  Instead of standard-issue chocolate and vanilla, the base flavors here are Asian-inspired, including Macapuno Coconut, Matcha Green Tea, Black Sesame and Ube Purple Yam.  And you can take your swirls to the next level in one of the Swerve Special Sundaes, such as “Brooklyn Bridge” (black sesame with toffee, mochi and caramel), “Mott & Mulberry” (matcha with oreos and chocolate sauce) and “Broadway” — purple yam with marshmallows and Fruity Pebbles cereal.

Tipsy Scoop
217 E 26th St Flatiron District,New York 10010
(917) 388-2862
Build up a sweet buzz at New York’s first ice cream “barlour,” serving liquor-infused concoctions inspired by classic cocktails.  Think Hot Buttered Rum, Red Velvet Martini, Tequila Mexican Hot Chocolate and Strawberry White Sangria Sorbet.  We’ll raise a cup (or cone) to that!

Dulcinea Churros
90 Kent Ave Williamsburg,New York 11211
(718) 928-6603
This food market favorite recently landed in Smorgasburg with an especially appealing play on their sugar-dusted Spanish pastries.  We’re talking churro ice cream sandwiches — deep-fried donut discs, pressed around almond milk, horchata or even unicorn ice cream, and finished with gobs of Nutella or dulce de leche.

10 Below
10 Mott St Chinatown,New York 10013
(212) 965-1336
While numerous imitators have jumped on board, 10 Below was the first spot to popularize Thai-style ice cream rolls in New York — utilizing a -10F cold plate to instantly freeze liquid crème anglaise, which is scraped into ice crystal-free rolls and assembled into Black Rose Waffle Tacos, or sundaes like “S’mores Galore,” “Key Lime Pie,” “Mint Chocolate Madness” or “Get Avo-Control;” finished with fresh avocado chunks and Himalayan sea salt.

Taiyaki
119 Baxter St Chinatown,New York 10013
(212) 966-2882
Asia is obviously leading the way in ice cream innovation, and the Japanese-influenced Taiyaki has swum to the front of the pack — by specializing in fish-shaped waffle cones; their gaping mouths crammed with vanilla, chocolate, black sesame or matcha ice cream, custard or red bean paste, condensed milk, strawberry or caramel drizzle, and toppings like mochi, cotton candy sprinkles, chocolate powder or graham cracker crumbs.
