listen i get where people are coming from when they say that nobody should have expected a radical overhaul of the shinobi system considering the series very squarely set up its main theme as not abandoning friends. that certainly was the setup. but i also think it would be inaccurate to say that the story as it evolved affirmed that refusing to abandon one's friends was the be-all and end-all fix for everything. i cannot emphasize this enough: it's not as though the prior generations we saw lacked devotion to their teammates. the problem was that the larger sociopolitical circumstances obstructed their ability to connect in one way or another. even naruto acknowledges at the land of iron that his and sasuke's positions made it impossible for them to reconcile. so for the series to do a 180 and assert that actually friendship was the solution all along (even though there have been no meaningful systemic changes, even though the source of these intergenerational conflicts has not been addressed) rings hollow. it's especially glaring that being violently beaten in a fight makes sasuke desert his quest for justice without any reservation -- therefore no ideological or political separation was bridged, sasuke was just made to forget what motivated him for the entire series' run. naruto and team 7 succeeding where their predecessors failed was not a function of anything they did differently, but mere narrative convenience.
#like. nearly every prominent relationship in this series is definitive proof that love is not enough!#itachi without a doubt loved sasuke and itachi hurt sasuke more immensely than anyone and itachi did it because of loyalty to the state#if that is how you love... your love is worth nothing#so yeah it just feels really disingenuous to say that the series was about the power of friendship all along#and people expecting anything else were watching the wrong series#when textually the power of friendship has ALWAYS proven insufficient#naruto#naruto meta#team 7#and listen u could certainly argue that the friendship in previous gens was deficient because there was no attempt made#at understanding or compromise. and to really live by obito's nindo you had to prioritize each other over country ALWAYS#but the series didn't do that either. sasuke for all intents and purposes 'lost'#and he was integrated back into konoha by accepting the hitai-ate#nrt had a bunch of weird mixed messaging on that front in general. like hiruzen letting orochimaru go which proved disastrous for konoha#or hiruzen and danzo's whole thing lmao#but whether the uchiha massacre was right/necessary was also left ambiguous so i'm not sure how that's supposed to paint hiruzen

Sasuke wasn’t only motivated by the love of his family when he wanted to kill Itachi. He was also manipulated by his brother into seeking revenge, and hating his brother to be able to defeat him. If Itachi hadn’t manipulated Sasuke and made him believe that he had to be lonely to be powerful, Sasuke probably wouldn’t have tried to avenge his family the way he did.
And I don’t really see how Naruto’s actions are rooted in hatred? His actions are more based either on his desire to be loved, or on his own love. Naruto wasn’t full of hatred because he had Iruka and Sasuke.
that’s completely irrelevant, loving his family and being manipulated aren’t mutually exclusive… both exist with each other.
naruto wants to become hokage to prove the village wrong and gain their attention because he’s so angry by the way he’s been treated as a kid. he literally has an entire mini arc in which he literally faces the hatred inside him… the dark naruto? the “true” naruto… it is literally addressed there that he does so much bc he holds hatred for the village erm.. ok

Characterizing Uchiha Sasuke (no he's not mean and heartless)
I saw someone say Sasuke was mean and heartless, now that person has a bias in the context they're talking about...but I won't get into that. I just want to ramble about how I see Sasuke, because it boggles my mind how anyone can come away from Naruto thinking this. It also is so weird to me when people characterize AU Sasukes where there was no massacre as some kind of jerk just for the sake of being a jerk. Because he's not like that at all? So when I write him these are the things I consider.
Pre-massacre Sasuke is sweet. He's bubbly. He admires his brother and father, wants their attention and love. He's very affectionate when he's comfortable, as we see with Itachi. He's open and expressive. He skips and jumps around, he's eager and sincere and hardworking. He smiles! And yes, some of these scenes might be anime-only but they flesh out what we do know of him before everything changed. There's no indications Sasuke was ever a mean kid or a bully (unlike some of his classmates I should say). He might even be kind of shy, mostly keeping to himself and his family.
Obviously this changes after the massacre, how could it not? And it's likely he'll never be the same again.
But parts of this side of him and who he was before can return, whether wholly or in a more subdued sense, with those he feels safe and comfortable with. And a non-massacre Sasuke I think would have grown up loving, kind and sweet. Because even canon Sasuke, as traumatized and wounded as he is, is a caring and selfless person. He saves his team mates without hesitation. He puts himself in harm's way for others even when he's barely standing himself. He throws away his own life for the sake of his clan and what he sees as his duty. He sees Naruto's pain and feels for him despite his own, and never gets angry with him or goes out of his way to hurt him as so many others did - he's actually kind of softer with him. He expresses very clearly that he cares about Naruto, calls him his most precious and intimate friend very bluntly. He loves animals??? He is one of the most emotion filled characters in the entire show and it's because he cares so much.
Not returning someone's romantic feelings/attraction doesn't make him a bad guy. Being annoyed when people get physical with him without his consent doesn't make him a jerk. Not being a social butterfly after his whole family, extended family, and clan were murdered by the person he loved most doesn't make him rude. Being withdrawn because his mental health is understandably terrible does not mean he's a terrible person. Rightfully not wanting to continue to prop up a system or accommodate people in power who did something so heinous doesn't make him a villain or an asshole either.

*through gritted teeth* ok i need you to understand that just bc a character makes a statement about sasuke's personality or whatever and they say it with a completely confident tone and everything, that does not mean they are supposed to be correct. when naruto instigates fights with sasuke bc he thinks he's being looked down on, he is wrong bc he is deeply insecure about his own abilities and self-worth and craves acknowledgement. when kakashi says sasuke is like him, he is wrong bc he is very clearly projecting and his complete misreading of sasuke's character and circumstances ends up backfiring. when sakura says sasuke must have used PEDs to get so strong she is wrong bc sasuke himself later disproves this assumption when he calls out orochimaru's methods. when itachi says sasuke is a blank canvas that can be easily painted over, he is also wrong and later admits he was wrong and can we pls just leave the sasuke was manipulated misinterpretation in 2022

there's a lot i hate about the naruto fandom but i think the worst of all is this strange insistence that hinata is an incredible character who puts sakura's writing to shame.
let's be clear, none of the women in naruto were really written perfectly, and these issues are often spotlighted through sakura as she's the female lead. but while there's a good deal to critique about her writing, she's still a fairly solid character in her own right and there's lots to admire about her. she's relentlessly loyal to her team and pushed herself damn-near close to the top (despite her civilian, or at least low-ranking shinobi background) through sheer force of will. and for all the talk about how there are lots of sexist tropes shaping her character (which is true to an extent), she defies many as well. she never falls for the heroic mc, she's temperamental and doesn't take shit from anyone, she's allowed to be flawed (but she's got a good heart), and so on.
hinata, on the other hand, barely even exists outside of naruto. i've never seen a character who exemplifies "woman written by a man" more, from her demure nature, support of the mc from the sidelines, and modest clothing but still very conventionally appealing design. she had potential in OG (everyone did🤕) with the issues plaguing the hyuuga clan, but that was promptly forgotten in favour of her only moments in part 2 being dramatic love confessions. her cousin dies and all we get from her is "naruto's hand is big and strong."
i like her for what she could have been but she (and maybe karin, but for different reasons) seriously get the worst treatment of naruto's female cast. it never fails to get on my nerves when some dudebro talks all about how she would have been the perfect female lead. it's mind-boggling that such misogyny is on open display in the naruto fandom. hinata's ENTIRE character is a male fantasy and it's not even remotely subtle.
