Game 245 - deskspace by npckc
Tumblr media
I picked up this game through the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. I chose to donate 10 dollars, and I found about 153 games in the bundle that I was actually interested in. So, the consideration for this game will be if it was worth the 7 cents (rounded up) that I paid for it and the hours that I played it for. The bundle has since ended, but I still encourage you to make a donation to the organizations listed here.
What did I think it was at first? no idea!
How was the character creator? There isn't one! There isn't really a way to customize your experience either.
How was the game? This is a fun little self-care / time management app! You can log your mood, set timers, and take little breaks.
Tumblr media
What did I not love? The UI is very minimal and the app is cute, but my cell phone does all of these things for me. Google can do most of these things. I don't necessarily need an app for this.
At 12 minutes and 7 cents, was it really worth it? It's a pretty cute little utility, and if you find that having your phone on you is a distraction when you study this could be helpful!

A good story does not need to depend on heavy visuals or excessive length to get a message across, and this is made apparent across npckc's wonderful Hot Spring series.

Tomato clinic
Tumblr media
Donating blood for hungry vampires.
This game is avaliable to download to Windows, Android and Mac, and it’s completly free.
Again, no romance (I’m sorry all romantics here, I promise, that I have plenty of content for you). It’s a short and sweet game about a clinic where you can donate blood for vampires to use. We are a human that doesn’t know much about vampires and wants to learn more. Does vampries burn in the sun? What are vampire traditions? You will learn all of that thanks to our cute hosts.
It’s really simple game, mostly visual novel with some small quizez and mini games. There are also multiple endings, I think three, but I really recommend checking out diffrent dialogue options. It’s really easy as this game has save option.
As for MC, we can name them, choose their pronouns and even a little of their apparance.
It’s a really short game, even if check out every ption, it would be at maximum one hour of content, but it will make you smile.
There aren’t any trigger warning, but if you don’t like talking about blood I would be careful (but no blood is seen).
Help this two vampires make a change in the world!

Game 7: one night, Hot Springs (Jan 2024)
This is a pleasant surprise, a game about a transgender person's experience about society, and how going out of your comfort zone can led to new experiences. While I can't say that it's a define experience for transgender people to open up, and the world to just be kind, at the least One Night, Hot Springs puts a positive spin to attempting to grow out of your comfort zone despite previous hardship.
Sadly, it's only real downfall is perhaps being too positive and short while trying to explain some rather complex feelings in a small amount of time. Despite this though, one night, hot springs still manages to juggle all it's characters well and give rather unique dialogue and experiences with each new choice you make. The fact that I wanted to see all the endings immediately, and experience more of the world is a testament to how good this game is, but it's sadly still too brief to satisfy me.

Game: one night, hot springs by npckc
Genre(s): slice of life, cozy
UI SHOWN: Main menu, preferences, textbox
Notes: Cute and heartwarming, the simplicity of the UI matches well with the chibi-fied character sprites and stylized backgrounds.

Dinking around in RPG Maker 2003 is actually really fun, I'm just writing the stupidest dialogue for this test game that's a standard RPG acting as a prequel to Hit and Run In This Mundane World! and Shiko's like "Who are you? I was dead" and the Sun King is like "Don't worry I brought you back to life now go on". I'm gonna grab my mouse so it's easier to place events and
I just remembered I didn't turn my poem in. I should do that. And then work more on the visual novel script (input the pronouns tool and write up to the MC going to work)

There's something so painful about seeing yourself represented so truthfully.
Early on Haru, the transgender lead in Year of Springs, Googles "How do women do X" and I burnt with shame. Made worse by playing the whole game with my cis girlfriend. Don't get me wrong- these games are cute! But seeing every one of your flaws magnified made this the most emotionally taxing game I've played all year.
Haru ghosts her friends because she can't risk becoming a nuisance to them. She agrees to things she doesn't want to do, and is never honest with anyone, because meakness is the only defensive mechanism she's allowed to use. I was so relieved the final game of the trilogy dealt with the asexuality of a different character instead- finally I could see someone else instead of the intimate diary of my doppelganger.
I do love these games and heavily recommend them to anyone curious about queer visual novels- the sprites are adorable, the music perfect, and the writing quite incredible- these are some of the best written visual novels I've played.

thanks for the explanation! i know it's been really long since i even asked for it i've just been having a hard time getting motivation to write anything. anyway
a tavern for tea is a short visual novel by npckc. you play as the owner of a tavern that only serves tea. your first customer is a human and you serve him a drink and have a short conversation, until a second customer enters. he's a demon. apparently humans and demons don't get along in this world so it gets a little tense between the two customers, and then the human leaves. if you serve your second customer the right drink, you'll find out he knows the first, and he's wanted to actually talk to him for a while. so you decide to create an opportunity for them to put their differences aside and get to know each other. (this admittedly sounds kind of like a romance plot now that i'm typing it out.)
in case you want to play the game for yourself now, i'm stopping here. i think it's enough to get someone interested. i don't know how much of this actually counts as 'propaganda' but i think others have written stuff like this so...?
npckc also has more games too! i think the most popular one should be a year of springs? i remember Haru was submitted to this bracket and lost in round 1. there's also a game where you play as a witch solving magic-related problems in a human-populated town and another one where you, as a human, try to learn more about vampires and make some friends too. and there's a game about making food from the protagonist's culture, nothing related to magic. they're all short (except a year of springs i guess?) and sweet so yeah! try some of them you won't regret it :D
