Dislikes: Darkness,Loneliness,Ruined Art,Uncontrolled Fires
Talents: Painting with Magic,Traditional Art,Reading Emotions,Poetic Speaking
Unique Magic: “Hues of You” ~ Any paint or liquid substance Ming has on a paint brush can be infused with emotions that if applied to a living being's skin will affect them.
Personality: A kind and compassionate young man with a vast curiosity of the world and the living beings within it. He has a scary and powerful imagination that affects him so much that what is real and what is not, exists in the same world to him. He can see the colors of people's souls and read their emotions, often advising others to not dwell in those colors for long or to cope with the stains of the past. He is a bit difficult to understand but if you open your mind to his deep words all will become much clearer. He loves meeting new people of all kinds.
Bio: The young artistic visionary spreading his love for art and feeling one's emotions. From his homeland people will say he is an unfortunate boy as he is the sole survivor of an incident at an art academy he attended for most of his life…all taken away in smoke and flames. Some feel he has gone mad from grief while others say he has adapted to something new and it's beautiful. He is kind but always questioning, making friends but also wanting enemies…it's an endless interesting time in his presence. He yearns to figure out the light and darkness in his heart or mind that call out to him…he is unsure.
More Info:
Ming's eyes change colors constantly depending on his mood or the mood of the person he is staring at. They shift between Purple,Red,Blue, and Gold. Their meaning always has multiple reasons.
Purple ~ Pain or Hope
Red ~ Anger or Passion
Blue ~ Sadness or Peacefulness
Gold ~ Despair or Overwhelming Emotions
The magic paint swipe that follows Ming is just his palette that can change all colors. It vasts into his giant paint brush when he needs to put it away but usually walking around with it as artistic inspiration can happen anywhere.
*Ming is indeed human but given his abilities he may be something else entirely but who knows.
He can only use magic via paint or liquid substances.
His giant paint brush can function as a flying broom.
Like in usual too engrossed artist fashion Ming will forget to eat and sleep properly. This is why his eye look so tired and his body is so small.
Ming likes to eat and receive things in 3s of possible. He will only eat 3 grapes then wait hours til he will do so again.
Since can see the emotions of people right away he just considers everyone is his friend or is fine with him because the colors are so telling when someone says they are his friend.
Is genuinely fearful but also excited to meet people who seem to lack emotions...

Welcome Home Update Spoilers
The Welcome Home site recently updated! I combed through the site quickly and managed to find quite a few things which I’ll post here. Spoiler warning, I’m just going to be listing a lot of the new stuff as I found it & where to find it. Not gonna theory craft as it is too late for that and I’m very tired.
/I Stick around on main page. Wally draws a house which leads to audio titled “I”. Wally says “There you are. Welcome home! Ha ha ha.”
WELCOME HOME PAGE
/help Yellow Flower drawing next to Eddie leads to new audio file titled “Help”. Wally says “What are you waiting for? To hear me again? Ha ha ha. I think… that means you can hear me.”
/will-2 Red & blue flowers lead to audio file “will”. Wally says “That’s… what an eye looks like. My eyes are black. What colors are yours?”
/4-14-bf Fly next to drawings leads to video titled “answer”. Close up of garden, clips(?), and peeled/open fruit(?). Frank and Barnaby are arguing. Frank is trying to tend to his garden while trying to dissuade Barnaby from sticking around to crack jokes. Finally Barnaby leaves and Frank says “Honestly I don’t know how you can stand to be around him-“ audio then distorts, but sounds somewhat like he said Wally. Video also ends there at that glitched part.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PAGE
/you-1 The You page has the same text, but now has a heart drawing with an orange smiley face on it. Clicking leads to an audio file titled “You”. Wally says “Can you see me? That’s okay if you can’t. Don’t worry. I know you’re there. You know I’m here too. I will talk to you.” His voice distorts a bit at “can’t” but gradually goes back to normal.
Note: I don’t remember much of what was here originally, so idk if much of the character info has changed. Sorry if I don’t catch smaller things.
Frank is stated to not have any known information as to his origin prior to moving into Home. No concept art could be found of Frank either.
/neighbor “So Below” now has a swirl underneath it. Clicking on it leads to an audio file with a shaking record disc. Hours makes various noises in it. Possibly morse code?
/8-14-ef Eddie is the only neighbour with a bug on his profile. Clicking it leads to a video titled “answer”. Close up of paper chains. Eddie called Frank for help with a beetle in the post office. Frank gets the beetle and reassures Eddie. Frank says “In fact, you’re not scared of them are you-“ audio distorts but still probably Wally. Video glitches and ends there.
/will Wally’s portrait in his profile now has a blue flower on the canvas. Clicking leads to an audio file titled “Will”. Wally says “You’re the most. Ha ha ha. You’re… so still. What are you doing?”
/9-14-fp A beetle-like bug is next to “About Us”. Clicking it opens a video on the same page titled “answer”. It’s a close up of a table with a plate and apples on the table. Frank and Poppy are talking about food. Preparing food made with nuts. Frank says “maybe this food could have saved my garden.”. They talk and Frank says “Besides, we’re all safe and sound here. Wouldn’t you agree-“ this time it is much more distinctly saying Wally. Video glitches and ends there.
ABOUT US PAGE
/10-14-js Grasshopper at the bottom leads to video titled “answer”. Close up of script while Julie and Sally argue over performance choices. Sally eventually gives in to Julie's choices, sighing and saying “Such is the way of artistic collaboration. Wouldn’t you agree-“ audio distorts, sounds less like Wally but still plausible. Video also distorts and ends on that.
/a Blue heart is clickable and leads to an audio file titled “a”. Wally says “I have more eyes than I did before. You know how to draw eyes. You draw mine many times. I know it is thanks to you, neighbor, that I can see. But it is still… I can’t… see.”
White text only visible through highlights.
- how’d you begin?
- “But it hurts.”
- Why’d you make this website?
- “Does it hurt?”
- Do you know how many episodes?
- “The numbers are so hard to read. Sometimes I can’t see them.”
MEDIA PAGE
New page!
Not much to say tbh. Some good audios tho
/1-14-ph Weird yarn bug off to the side near the top. Goes to a video titled “answer”. A close up of yarns & fabrics while Howdy and Poppy speak. Howdy is delivering some more yarn for Poppy. Acknowledgement of someone else in the room. (Howdy says something along the lines of “Helps to have an extra set of arms. I can see you know that quite well.”). Howdy offers Poppy a yarn spinner. Poppy says “Do you think you could help me figure out how to spin the yarn-“ Most likely Wally at the end, but it gradually gets more distorted after “could”.
NEWS PAGE
Drawing above Julie & Frank's heads is not clickable
Toy company called Marlo that keeps turning up dead ends.
Guest book is being closed. They bring up the mysterious images.
OOOOH “So many guest signatures… so many of them are trying to communicate. What are you telling me for? Do you think I can answer. What are you trying to do to me. I’m closing that guest book. I’m not playing this game anyone. The ringing is enough.” Right underneath the latest update.
STICKERS PAGE
/i-2 A drawn star with a red dot on it appears behind the text. It leads to an audio file titled “I” where Wally(?) starts drawing eyes with spiral pupils. Wally says “Do you like to draw? I do. Do you know how to draw an eye? First, you draw a circle. Next you draw a smaller circle inside. Then you color it in.”
Sprites of all the characters along with banners
/11-14-jb Spider at the top leads to a video titled “answer”. In the video, it’s a shot of light coming through some branches while Julie and Barnaby are arguing over who’s funnier. Second acknowledgment of another, most likely Wally (Barnaby says “You hearing this little buddy?”). Julie makes a pun. Barnaby is very sassy. Julie says “it was to a funny joke. Wasn’t it-“ Wally is distorted, video glitches and ends there.
MERCHANDISE PAGE
/phone The telephone does have audio for Wally. It’s titled “duet”, but this one is a longer recording. Wally talks to you for a while before Home creaks and Wally wraps the call up.
Lots of merchandise, so it’s safe to assume Welcome Home was very popular back when it was airing.
/6-14-jf A butterfly is resting on the C in “Currently Unknown Records”. Clicking it takes you to a video titled “answer”. It is another close up of the garden, this time with more destroyed produce(?). Julie and Frank are talking and Julie is offering solutions to Frank's garden problems. They are giggling and cheering up. Julie says “Don’t worry, I’m sure we could come up with a good joke between the three of us. Isn’t that right-“ Possibly Wally. Audio distorts & video cuts off.
THE PLAYFELLOW EXHIBITION PAGE
Does a rundown of how things started and the exhibition. Shows photos of the exhibition.
Welcome Home believed to have a four year run, from October 11th, 1969 until sometime in 1974.
The Question Answerer helped restore the vinyl records and the talking telephone.
/understand A drawing of a house appears next to the Poppy sprite at the bottom, which leads to an audio file titled “understand”. Wally says “Do you like Home? Home is my house. Do you have a Home too? Do you hear it too? You can hear mine.”
Small detail but out of all eight spinning vinyls at the bottom, the one on the very right is out of sync with the others.
GUESTBOOK PAGE
As previously stated, the guestbook is closed for the time being.
/find The big image of Wally and Barnaby looking through the guestbook has a drawn text bubble appear beside it. Clicking leads to an audio file titled “find”. Wally says “…I can’t hear you… Do you know who I am? We’ve looked into each other’s eyes so many times. You’re looking at me now.”
/13-14-he The beetle at the top of the page leads to a video file. It is a close up of multicoloured apples(?). Howdy and Eddie are talking. Eddie's in a rush as usual. Howdy sends the bowling balls Julie ordered off with Eddie. Howdy says “Let’s hope he doesn’t run into anybody with that order, ey-“ distorted saying of Wally, audio glitches and video ends.
/7-14-ej There’s a worm in the submissions. In the submission by zip. Clicking on it leads to a video titled “answer”. In it is a close up of paper with colored pencil drawings on it, while Eddie and Julie talk. Probably related to that drawing of them dressed up and Julie acting as a CEO figure, cause they're talking in the same dialogue and way. Business goes broke and Julie goes off to freak out about it. Eddie says “Oh yeah he’s right here. Phone call for ya-“ distorted Wally, audio warps and video ends.
Other than that, there’s not much different. They filled out the rest of the book and seemingly got rid of the previous hidden messages
Hopes this helps some of y’all.

• His Experiences He's tall and gracefully slender. Every twinkle and smile of his is beautiful. The way he puts his sword back into its sheath is a delight for the eye. He carries the same aura as those famous artists I learned about in art classes during my studies in Lumopolis. — Vice
• His Story (I) Code name Fox. Though he keeps reminding everyone that he's not the Royal Fox... • His Story (II) Fox wants to become a painter. He likes framing the air with his hands. • His Story (III) Once, someone randomly asked Fox how he deals with remaining soup after cooking, and he replied without hesitation that he uses it to make porridge with "extra wild parsley." • His Story (IV) Fox once told the story of how a respected teacher of his was how he came to join the Phantom Thieves. I can't forget the sad expression on his face from then.
[4 minutes featuring 51 pieces of voiced dialogue that occur within the game. Text translations below, with some minor edits for clarity/additions of left-out dialogue.]
"My experiences here will be inspiration for my drawings."
"Good morning. It's almost breakfast time, right? I'd like to taste the food here first."
"Are you on an evening stroll? [Not a bad] idea. Mind if I join?"
"Still [awake]? [How odd.] Though, the same goes for me." (NOTE: Correct me if I'm wrong, but another interpretation would be for Yusuke to say something like "Though, I'm not one to talk.")
"[Hm?] What? Oh, you're taking a walk too?"
"Is this the Colossus? It's a unique experience to overlook the land from the sky."
"There's no traffic expenses to worry about in this world... [Not bad]."
"The water in this world tastes great... On par with the tap water in my world."
"Seaweed tea and dessert [makes for] the best [combination]."
"When I sit down, the tail on my outfit seems to get in the way..."
"You calling yourself the Last Caelestite would be equivalent to me calling myself the Future Star of Nihonga."
"The Colossus is so spacious, I even want to [rent] a room from you as my [atelier]."
"This world has so many things I've never seen before, inspiration is just pouring in!"
"I love this world. I hope I can record it all on my canvas."
"The Colossus really has everything... [You'll show] me around later, [won't you]?"
"Meals are complimentary? That's amazing!"
"The interior design here... Was it done to your preferences?"
"[I'll handle this. Please] leave it to me!"
"This is Fox of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. You need [my power], right?"
"The application of blade and brush share some similarities."
"I've gotten [a little bit] more powerful, it [seems]."
"It's going well. Keep it up."
"Push them back, Goemon!"
"Time for me to shine."
"Leave this to me."
"There's nowhere for you to run."
"Time to wake up!"
"He is another me!"
"An opening!"
"Slice it!"
"Cut it to pieces!"
"Perfect. Now, on to the next victory."
"Sorry you have to see me looking like this..." (NOTE: Some clarification here—it sounds like he's saying something more like "my apologies for showing you something unsightly.")
"Alchemy Stars!"
"I want to explore the mysteries of this world too, so let's go!
"Tails, cat ears, dragon horns... The creator of this world sure has [interesting] taste."
"Come, let me show you the most aesthetic performance you've ever seen!"
"Eclipsite figures... There's no artistic value in them whatsoever.
"Joker is a trustworthy leader."
"Having allies isn't a bad thing."
"Walking is pretty nice. You save a lot in travel expenses."
"My dislikes...? I want nothing to do with anyone who dislikes art."
"I can feel the beauty from the exterior of this Colossus."
"It's for me? I shall take it."
"[...Such a nice thing, for me? My apologies]...I shall appreciate it.
"A [present] for me? Hm? How lovely!"
"Terrific! Absolutely terrific! You really know what I like, [don't you?]"
"As long as I can draw and paint, I don't care where I am."
"I've been into donating blood lately." [Yusuke laughs] "Yes, it's my new hobby."
"I believe the supermarket's having a sale today... Oh wait, I'm in another world..."
"It's coming to an end!"

hi!! do you have any tips on starting ur writing blog? ive been wanting to create one for awhile but have no idea as to where i should start. for example, making banners and creating the right links to everything 😭
hiii <3 ! id be more happy to help you out ! if you need anything else, please lmk and i will try to answer asap!
Tumblr media
1) ACCOUNT THEME / LAYOUT !
- you should prepare a main post you’re gonna pin to your profile ! makes it easier for users to find your works and all your info :)
inspo?! — your pinned post does not have to be fancy whatsoever, it can be very simple , up to your choice ! i say look at other blogs for some inspo on yours and look at pinterest for a theme!
- just have fun with it , test out random dividers and find pics that could match , whatever style you want :))
2) FFS / LINKS
- this isn’t as complicated as you think!! after having your masterlists and other stuff, linking things does not take much work :))
- you just have to edit / make a post , copy text and click the link icon to paste the link you copied!
3) BANNERS
- you can use any apps to make your banners! personally, i am now a canva user and love making my headers there ^^ !!
- just play around with colors , pics , etc to get the cover you want ! your banner may not be perfect right off the bat but thats okay !!
- you dont always need a banner for your fics, 3 pics on the top of your post is fine as well ! (like a moodboard header)
- but again, its all preference :))
4) TAGGING
- when you wanna post a fic , use as many tags as possible ! it gets attraction to your posts so i recommend it !
- as you can see, people are in networks so that they can reblog their works for more attention!
- def a important part (even though it can be tiresome)
Tumblr media
FINAL NOTES — just have fun w your blog !! don’t be pressured to always post, work on whatever you wanna work! i hope your writing blog turns out well and you start it soon !

Tumblr media
You were honestly dreading the portrait. You had never enjoyed having your picture taken in any way or form, so the idea of having an image of yourself immortalized with paint on canvas made your stomach churn.
It was apparently a tradition at the firm you had just started at. Each of their lawyers had a portrait commissioned to hang up in a row down one of the hallways. You had remembered seeing them when you first went in for your initial interview, but you hadn’t realized that they were such an important aspect of the office, or that you would be required to get one done for yourself.
It wasn’t enough to be a deal breaker, you enjoyed working at the firm and had gotten along with your coworkers better than you had at past offices. But the portrait still felt like a problem to you. And according to your boss, no number of arguments, even from a great lawyer like yourself, could get you out of it.
To make matters worse, the artist who had been commissioned to do all of the past portraits had moved across the country and was unable to do yours. This meant you and your secretary had to select a new artist to paint your portrait. And while you had never met the artist who did the portraits of your colleagues, and therefore had no attachment to them whatsoever; the idea of not having the same person do yours added another level of anxiety to the situation.
When you arrived for work in the morning, the line of portraits haunted you as you made your way to your office.
“Ms. [L/N]!” your secretary calls out to grab your attention before you walk into your own personal work space.
“Yes?” you ask, making your way over to her desk.
“I have a list of artists who are available and can be commissioned to do a portrait,” she handed you a stack of laminated papers filled with pages of contact info and reference photos.
“Thank you, Jisoo,” you smiled. “I’ll let you know when I pick one!”
You sighed heavily as you shoulder open the door to your office. At least thumbing through these papers would be an excuse to start actual work a little later. You hang your bag and coat on the rack by the door. You push a pile of papers out of the way to go through the stack Jisoo had handed you.
You tried not to notice that the majority of the artists painted portraits in a style similar to baroque, all of their female subjects made to look dainty and always entirely captured in pastels. That must have been a tip Jisoo had received from your boss. While all of your male colleagues had caused you no trouble, the big boss had made several comments about you being a “female lawyer.” Getting a portrait in this style would not only demean you but also make yours stick out like a sore thumb in that long line of serious, warm-toned ones. You had no doubt that your boss had been breathing down your poor secretary’s shoulder as she searched through artists for your portrait.
You silently thanked Jisoo when you noticed she had managed to sneak more of a variety of artists at the bottom of the stack. You pulled out the few that seemed to be able to create a portrait that would resemble those of your colleagues.
One of the artist profiles catches your eye. For a moment you couldn’t understand why Jisoo had included him. It seemed as if most of his works were abstract, just random splashes of color and shape. They were beautiful, you thought, but none of them exactly worked in place of a portrait.
Then you turned the page to see that Jisoo had included a portrait he had painted.
It was beautiful.
You looked at the description. It was just a casual portrait he had done of his friends. But it was so… breathtaking. You felt as though you could see the subject’s entire life and personality contained within the picture.
You thumbed back to the artist’s information page, wanting to learn more.
Xu Myungho.
“Whenever I paint portraits, I prefer to really know and understand my subjects first. I have a process of getting to know someone and understand what they want from their portrait. If I am not painting in a way that honors that person and represents them accurately, then why am I painting their portrait at all?”
You had to admit that this part of his profile was appealing. If he had a whole process, then that meant you could delay the existence of your portrait for a bit longer.
Also, there was a small, selfish part of you that said: If I’m going to have a portrait of myself, I want it to look as nice as this one.
You walked back out of your office and handed the profile back to Jisoo, “Let’s contact this one.”
“Xu Myungho?” she confirmed, looking up at you after glancing at the paper.
“Yes, that one,” you affirmed. “Let me know if and when you get a response.”
*****
He had a kind face.
That was your immediate thought upon meeting him. His features were soft and his smile was gentle.
He had requested to meet you in a coffee shop. It was small and very quiet. There were beautiful slanted sky lights, exposing the whole place to the glow of the early morning sun.
He didn’t look how you thought he would based off his art. You knew better than to believe that artists would dress sluggishly or that you could guess how someone would present themselves based off of what kind of art they made. But you were still surprised to see him so well dressed and well kept. He obviously cared for his presentation. You would think he was living a corporate lifestyle.
He carried a camera with him.
“Oh, I’m into photography too. And well… you never know when you’ll find something that inspires you,” he explained when you asked about it.
You liked the way he spoke. His answers were simple and yet held so much meaning. But he wasn’t pretentious about it. He was just himself.
His personality was as kind as his face. He was very sensitive to your hesitations and didn’t judge your predicament.
“If you’re nervous about it, we’ll take this slow. We can run through a number of options on how to style it. You said you didn’t want yours to stick out too much, correct? Would you mind if I came to the office to take some reference photos of the other portraits?” Myungho suggested.
“Not at all! I work regular office hours for the rest of the week, so you can stop by anytime!” you offer.
“Perfect!” he said taking a note in his planner. “Also, I assume you read my piece on portrait commissions? I hope you don’t mind if I ask to meet you often as I work on this…” Myungho searches your expression for a reaction.
“Oh! I don’t mind at all!” you assure. “To be honest, I just moved here. It would be nice to have an excuse to get out and explore a little!” Myungho nods and smiles as he listens, his hand absentmindedly taking notes as you speak.
The first meeting is brief. Myungho merely wants to know what the project is for and set up a schedule for your next meeting. Although you hadn’t been with him for very long, you left the meeting feeling at ease. You could already tell that working with Myungho would not cause you the amount of anxiety you had anticipated.
*****
“Is that the sexist one?” Myungho whispered to you, pointing at the picture of your boss and nudging you.
You laughed in response, feeling validated by Myungho’s notice of your boss’s behavior. His nose had sort of scrunched up earlier when you showed him the other artists your boss had told your secretary to suggest to you. “Not that I don’t respect these artists or think they’re talented, but…” he thumbed through the pages and pages of pink and blue pastel, “It’s obvious that he’s treating you differently since you’re a female lawyer.”
You hadn’t even had to complain to Myungho about it, he had picked up your boss’s subtle sexism himself. But work had to be done so instead of ranting, he simply ‘tsked’ and set down the photos so you could show him the portraits of your colleagues.
He took out his camera to click a few photos of the other portraits, “So as far as feeling…” he starts off before pulling back to check a setting on his camera. He pulls the device back up to his eye and talks slowly as he continues taking references, “Did you want to look more serious… or approachable?” His words are chosen carefully so as not to offend you in any way. You take a moment to once more appreciate how far Myungho goes to make sure you feel comfortable with him.
“I guess more approachable…” you trail off, “But…”
“Still respectable?” he guesses looking away from the camera for a moment to make eye contact with you as he awaits your answer.
“Exactly,” you confirm nodding your head.
Myungho stays silent for a moment, clicking through his camera to make sure he got all of the reference photos he wanted. Then he stares up at the actual paintings for a long while. You realize he’s inspecting their backgrounds. “Would you like for the setting to be here in the office? It seems as if theirs are placed somewhere like this,” he points out.
“Oh, I guess that would be a good idea. Whatever you can do to make mine as similar as possible. Would you like to take a look around the rest of the office?” you offer.
“Sure,” he gestures you to lead and follows after. “Do you think anyone here would know the exact measurements of the other canvases? I can probably guess the correct size, but I’d rather be absolutely sure before buying one for your portrait.”
“I’ll ask the head secretary later on and forward you whatever information she sends me!” you assure.
“Perfect,” he thanks. Myungho lets you lead him around, stopping you every once in awhile to take plenty of photos of different parts of the office. “I honestly think there are lots of places here that would provide a decent, simple, warm-toned background as the other portraits have,” Myungho comments. You simply nod in agreement. “How far am I allowed to go?” he asks suddenly.
“I’m sorry?” you ask, flustered by not understanding what he means.
“Oh, I mean like… I don’t want to interrupt your work,” he explains. “I’d like to see your daily process or even sit in on one of your trials? I’m supposed to be representing you as the professional you are. But I won’t do any of that if it makes you uncomfortable.”
“I think that should be fine… I just don’t know how entertaining it will be for you…” you say uneasily, not wanting him to get bored by your job. I mean, he was an artist. If you were being honest, most of your career was paperwork. You weren’t sure how much fun shadowing a lawyer would be to an artist.
“It’s fine,” he chuckled, taking a picture of a window at the end of one of the office hallways. “You’re my subject, so it’ll be fascinating to me.”
He assures you with a kind smile as you try to ignore the way your heart skips at his words.
*****
Myungho does end up accompanying you to one of your trials as well as shadowing you at work for a day. He only does each one once, though.
“See? I told you it’d be boring,” you tease him about it at your next meeting with each other, feeling a lot more friendly around him by this point.
“It’s not that. I just wanted to get a feel for how you are when you’re working. I got more than enough material from those two times,” Myungho holds up his journal as evidence. He was right, you could tell that many more pages had been used since the first time you had seen it. You guessed there must have been something he saw interesting in your work life. “Let’s go for a walk!” he suddenly suggests, getting up from his seat where the two of you had been drinking boba outside of a café.
“For what reason?” you ask but follow his lead.
He shrugs, “I want to ask you a few questions, but I believe sometimes we think better when we’re moving rather than when we’re sitting still.” Myungho sets off. There was a park near this area, you were sure he was leading you there.
It was spring. The trees and flowers were blooming. Petals were falling.
“Why did you become a lawyer, then?” Myungho asks, pulling his camera out and beginning to inspect its current settings.
“I guess for the same reasons anyone becomes a lawyer. A sense of justice? Wanting to help people?” you shrug. In your heart you knew that wasn’t actually true of all lawyers and that there was corruption in your profession as there was in any other. But you had always tried to do your best to bring true justice.
“It was nice to see you sticking up for the little guy in the courtroom,” Myungho comments, starting to take pictures at this point.
You shrug, watching his process of photography as you speak, “It was just the case I was given. I’ll probably keep getting smaller cases like that until I’m no longer considered the newbie of the office.”
“Did you always want to be a lawyer?” Myungho signals for the two of you to walk a bit further, obviously taking interest in a tree a bit further down the walkway.
“I don’t think so…” you think for a moment. “I went through a bunch of dreams as a kid and in high school as lots of people do. Then one day my friend mentioned she could picture me as a lawyer and it all sort of just… clicked?”
“That makes sense,” Myungho pauses to get an angle on the tree before bringing his camera up once more. “Sometimes all it takes is someone saying it straightforward, out loud.” After snapping a few pictures of the tree, he lets his camera fall to hang from the strap around his neck. He takes his journal out and scribbles some more notes.
“I know you’re the one that’s supposed to be asking the questions, but I’m curious… What do your notes look like? Are they all just about how boring and predictable I am?” you joke.
Myungho shakes his head as he smiles. “How many times I’ve called you boring in my journal is a secret,” he teases.
You laugh, once again noticing the ever-rising level of comfort and understanding between the two of you as you mess with each other, “But seriously, I’m not allowed to know what you’re writing about me?  What about after my portrait is done?”
Myungho simply shakes his head at you. A firm no. That’s your answer. “Besides,” he says, pulling his camera back up after pocketing the journal, “we don’t have time for that. I still have plenty of incredibly important questions to ask you.”
“Like what?” your curiosity is genuine.
“What’s your favorite color?” Myungho asks with the smuggest grin, only barely managing to avoid your arm as you swat at him.
*****
Myungho actually starts your portrait the following week. He was only working on the background, but since he started, your meetings had gone down considerably.
“I’ll probably ask to meet you a lot more once I begin on painting your actual person, but I feel like I’ve already been bothering you too much, so I’ll let you have a break from me for now,” he had explained, smiling as gently as you always did.
You felt pathetic from how much you missed him. You told yourself it was because you had just moved, you hadn’t made enough friends yet.
But at the same time…
A friendship with Myungho had felt easier than any other you’d had. It was like… you two were pieces of a puzzle that fit together perfectly. You always understood how he spoke and what he meant. He never judged any of your hesitations despite being so outgoing himself. Conversation flowed naturally between the two of you and you never felt afraid to tell him anything.
Maybe it was just your desperation for friendship, but…
*****
You smiled at the pictures Myungho sent you as he worked on your portrait. It was still just the background but you could tell he had chosen your personal office as the setting. It was incredibly detailed and accurate. He only sent you small portions as a preview but you could see that the lighting was a soft blue coming from the window. The tones he had included would compliment the portraits of your colleagues well.
“When I finally start on you, how the portrait looks will have to remain a secret to the end.”
You roll your eyes at the text; you should’ve known he’d pull something like this.
*****
“Shouldn’t you have enough reference photos to paint me?” you ask Myungho as he sits quietly in the corner of your office. The canvas was turned so you couldn’t see the front of it at all. And Myungho had efficiently threatened you out of trying to take a look.
“I do,” he agreed, nodding his head, “but sometimes you get to a feature on a person that’s difficult to pin down and it’s best to have the real thing for reference.” He winks at you as he finishes speaking. It’s a daring move on his part, but you receive it well, returning a bright smile.
“Are you going to show anyone else before it’s done, or is everyone besides you forbidden from seeing it before your masterpiece is completed?” you ask, fanning through some papers.
“I will reveal it to only you once it’s done. After that you will get to decide if you like it, or if I owe you a whole new painting from scratch,” Myungho’s eyes never leave the canvas.
“I highly doubt that will happen,” your mind drifts to the small previews of the painting you had seen. You also thought of the original portrait that had convinced you to contact him in the first place. There was no way you’d dislike what he made. You were sure of it. “Are you really planning on staying for my whole work day?”
“The longer I stay, the more of this painting gets done,” Myungho explains simply.
“I tend to work a little late…” you test, seeing how he’ll react.
“That’s fine. I guess you’ll just have to treat me to dinner to make up for my overtime,” Myungho beams into his work.
“Fine, but I pick where we eat.”
“Deal.”
*****
Myungho asked you plenty more questions at dinner, but this time, his journal did not appear once. The two of you simply speak back and forth, finding out more and more about each other. You laugh and laugh. And hours pass. And you two don’t notice.
Myungho allows you to ask him all sorts of questions about his life and his art, finally opening up the doors to you that you had already opened for him.
“I really missed you,” you blurt out suddenly, halfway through dinner. Myungho looks genuinely surprised since the first time you met him. You immediately feel heat move up your face and out to your ears. “I just mean… you know, when we weren’t seeing each other as often. I missed actually having a friend around here and-”
Myungho grabs your hand, fingers fully lacing with yours. That gentle smile is present as he looks into your eyes, “I missed you, too.”
*****
You grow somewhat anxious as your portrait is nearing completion. Myungho had admitted he valued you as a friend too, but what if that was just to please a client? What if as soon as the portrait was done, he disappeared completely from your life?
You watched carefully every day as Myungho worked, seeing him paint smaller and smaller areas with more specific and detailed strokes.
You were also anxious to see the finished piece. You found yourself staring down at the reference portrait Jisoo had given you that Myungho had painted. It was so breathtaking every time. You wondered, though, if there was enough to you in order to create a portrait like that.
*****
“Yeah, I’ll have to leave right after I’m done with your portrait,” Myungho explained, dropping a paintbrush into a jar of water.
“Do you do that often? Leave town for work?” you ask, trying to mask how much your heart hurts from the idea that Myungho will just up and leave as soon as he’s done painting your portrait. It was stupid to feel like that anyways, he had no obligation to stay in town just because you wanted him to.
“Sometimes, it honestly just depends on the clientele I’m getting,” Myungho’s tone feels different than usual. Was he possibly nervous to tell you he’d be gone?
“How long will you be away?” you had tried faking your apathy by staring at your computer screen. The truth was, you hadn’t been able to read a single word on it.
“Just a couple of weeks, it’s going to be a really simple piece,” he assures.
You only nod.
*****
“Sorry I couldn’t be here to reveal it to you myself.”
That was all the note had said. You had found it on your desk that morning after Jisoo had informed you that your portrait had already been hung in the hall.
You didn’t want to see it… but you also really did.
You found Jisoo already standing in the hall, staring up at it. Her expression only added to your anxiety. What was that? Disgust? Interest? Approval?
You act as cavalier as possible when you stroll up next to her. You’re trying to think of a casual conversation starter but you fall quiet as the painting finally graces your sight.
It’s a simple picture, you sitting at your desk, looking out at the spectator, obviously midway through working on something. As you had already noticed from the preview photos, the lighting is soft and blue. It illuminates you from the window behind your person. The colors and tone go along perfectly with the other portraits. The detail is impeccable. And your expression… Myungho had landed right on the line of approachable and respectable. But the real kicker was…
“Your eyes,” Jisoo speaks your thoughts out loud. “I don’t know how he did that… I don’t want to sound dramatic but it’s like… I don’t know… There’s a universe in them… He must see something really… beautiful…” Jisoo trails off realizing she’s absentmindedly speaking her own thoughts. She straightens herself out and glances at you, “Sorry if I misspoke.”
You shake her head, knowing she must be experiencing what you felt when you saw a portrait by Myungho for the first time, “It’s alright, Jisoo.”
“The guys are going to be so jealous of your portrait,” Jisoo laughs. You give her a genuine smile for a moment, unable to pull your eyes away from the painting for much longer.
*****
Myungho had requested a follow-up meeting to confirm that you were satisfied with his work. The two of you met at a food truck in a park.
“Sorry I asked you to meet so late, but I wanted to see you as soon as I got back,” Myungho says as he hands the vendor money for both of your food. You can tell he had been travelling. It was the first time you had seen him in casual clothing and with his usual slicked back hair in an un-styled look.
He seemed so… cute like this.
Myungho had ended up having to stay for three weeks on his trip. Since he was busy with the client, he didn’t contact you often. You tried not to be clingy about it, but couldn’t help sending a couple texts asking how he was doing. Every time his response was just that he was doing well and he was sorry he wasn’t there.
You still weren’t exactly sure where you stood with him. He had already been paid for his work by your firm. But the follow up could still just be pleasing a customer in order to maintain a good reputation.
It felt sort of embarrassing to be so desperate to see him without even knowing if he truly cared for you.
Myungho leads the two of you along the park path. You try to stop yourself from staring shamelessly at this more natural looking Myungho in the yellow park lights. He looks ironically cozy in the loose denim jacket he’s donning.
“So, I’m afraid to ask since you haven’t brought it up, but… The painting?” Myungho searches your face for a tell on what you’ll say to him.
“I love it a lot,” you say quietly, almost too embarrassed to expose all of your true feelings on the subject.
“Is that it?” Myungho actually giggles, pushing his face closer to yours.
“I can’t really explain it. I just know that I love it,” you offer. Myungho nods and accepts this answer. The two of you slowly step along in silence. It’s comfortable, being in his presence. You’re terrified of what it will feel like if this ends.
You let yourself look back up at Myungho again only to see he looks quite nervous himself. You’re about to ask what’s wrong when you see him sneak a glance down to your hand. Your gaze follows his only to see his hand slowly inching closer to yours. Warmth blossoms in your chest and you can’t stop the smile that pushes across your face.
You help him by closing the gap, fully grasping his hand with yours.
Myungho has the cutest smile on his face as he stares down at your joint hands, beginning to rub his thumb against your skin.
“You know… I don’t actually meet with clients this often,” Myungho admits quickly before clearing his throat. “I don’t know if that’s selfish of me to want to get to know you more and spend more time with you.”
You stop walking and tug on Myungho’s hand to get him to do the same, “Well, I supposed I did guilt you a bit with all that talk of not having anyone else I know here.”
Myungho shakes his head, “I wanted to spend time with you, I really did. I like you a lot.” You smile up at him. Myungho reaches up with his other hand to take firm hold of the side of your face. You feel his thumb brush gently across your cheek. The feeling of his skin against yours leaves your mind fuzzy with excitement. “[Y/N]?” Myungho’s eyes ceaselessly searching into yours. “Can I?”
You nod immediately, not even fully caring what he’s asking for.
Myungho steps closer and leans in to press his lips softly against yours. It’s only for a moment before he pulls back. His hand leaves your face to grab the back of your head, holding it still as he changes the angle of his head so his lips can meet your forehead this time.
“Can we plan a real date?” he asks, keeping his face close to yours.
You nod enthusiastically, giving him a big smile before pressing a kiss of your own against his nose. “I have a question, though…”
“What is it?” Myungho’s hand strokes carefully through your hair.
“Is your girlfriend allowed to read your journal?” you give him your best puppy-dog eyes.
“I’m breaking up with you,” Myungho teases, shaking his head and reaching up to pinch your nose.
“Not even a peak?” you tease back, running after him as he starts off the path again.
The sound of your and Myungho’s laughter fills the air as you two chase each other around the park, attacking each other with sweet kisses when you manage to catch the other.

hi!! thank u so much, i hope u are too. before i get into this, i just want to preface my answer by saying that it’s okay if u don’t end up finding any internships/placements. it’s great if u land one (or multiple ones), but if not, it’s not the end of the world and u can still find a job once u graduate. it’s just important for me to reassure all u soon to be graduates bc i remember i was SO stressed about job hunting and finding internships that i would regularly have stress induced crying jags (lmao rip). so seriously, don’t worry if u don’t score any work placements. u will still be ok.
so to jump right in in ur final year, it’s a good idea to start searching for internships/placements to start gaining experience in prep for graduation. a good place to search is linkedin (and if u don’t have a profile yet, it’s a good idea to sign up and start filling up ur profile with ur info bc it comes in v handy for ur professional life), google jobs & glassdoor etc. apply to as many places as u can (i recommend applying to companies/roles that actually excite u, bc it makes the whole process less shitty and borderline tolerable if not enjoyable lmao).
it’s also a good idea to start putting together a cv, if u don’t have one, or if ur like me and never bother updating ur shit, make sure to update the one u already have. update it with ur predicted grades and job experience if u have any. if ur struggling to find a nice design for ur cv or if u just want to change things up a bit, i highly recommend canva - they have lots of great cv templates. aside from cv templates, they also have a lot of great design templates for everything ranging from posters to business cards to presentations, and it’s completely free. seriously, i can’t recommend it enough.
if ur like me and also struggle majorly with interviews, i also recommend doing some interview practise. google common interview questions use the STAR technique (situation, task, action and result) when answering. get into the habit of explaining ur accomplishments and responsibilities this way. it might also help to write a few down as examples to refer back to (this helped me a lot bc i’m v forgetful and need everything written down in order to be effective lmao).
that’s all for now, hope that helps!! if any of u have more advice, pls comment below 🤍

The Abyss Gazes Also - Watchmen blog
(SPOILER WARNING: The following is an in-depth critical analysis. if you haven’t read this comic yet, you may want to before reading this review)
Tumblr media
Rorschach is arguably the most beloved character in the graphic novel.
Now anyone reading these reviews who hasn’t read the graphic novel I imagine must be slightly confused by that statement, considering I haven’t exactly been painting a very glowing picture of him. He’s misogynistic, homophobic, bigoted, violent and sociopathic. Not exactly the traits you’d associate with a ‘beloved’ character. And yet that’s exactly what he is. Out of all the characters in Watchmen, Rorschach is by far the most popular. Of course this isn’t exactly a good thing. A big reason for his popularity is because of people either missing or ignoring the satirical subtext of the character (Ted Cruz reportedly is a big Rorschach fan. Let that sink in for a moment). That’s not to say the character isn’t well written or compelling. I’ve said in the past that Rorschach is my personal favourite character simply because of how interesting I find him.
The Abyss Gazes Also explores the origins of Rorschach and I thought this would be a good opportunity to not only analyse the chapter, but to also question where this romanticised view of Rorschach may have come from.
Tumblr media
The Abyss Gazes Also is told from the perspective of Dr. Malcolm Long. A psychiatrist assigned to evaluate and counsel Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach. I absolutely love this setup and how it plays out. Like with Doctor Manhattan’s origin story in Watchmaker, rather than just giving us a big info dump, we get to explore the backstory through the eyes of a certain character.
Malcolm represents everything Rorschach despises. He’s part of the corrupt establishment, thinks of no one but himself and deludes himself into thinking everything will be fine so as not to upset the apple cart. (also, while not overtly stated, considering Rorschach’s extreme right wing views, I imagine the fact that Malcolm is black probably doesn’t help matters either). From the beginning we know that Malcolm doesn’t really care about helping Rorschach in any meaningful way. He just wants the fame attached with studying the mind of this infamous vigilante. And by the end he does get to fully understand Rorschach better than anyone else, but at a horrifying cost.
As Malcolm learns more about Walter’s transformation into Rorschach, we see his otherwise upbeat personality slowly dissolve as he begins to see the world from Rorschach’s point of view. I love how Alan Moore chooses to represent this. In the beginning, Malcolm’s notes are eloquent, detailed and optimistic, but as the issue goes on, the sentences start to become more broken, much darker and disjointed to the point where it actually begins to resemble Rorschach’s speech pattern. It’s a subtle illustration of Malcolm’s changing psyche. We also see him become more and more aware of the situation between America and Russia, whereas before he was very much focused inward on his career and his wife. As his perception of the world around him changes, the things he used to care about fall away. He neglects his wife and by the end his career is virtually in tatters because in the wake of potential Armageddon, none of these things matter to him anymore. Now on the one hand you could see this as some kind of comeuppance. A selfish man getting what he deserves. But it’s also deeply tragic because the point is no one should have to view the world the way Rorschach does.
Which brings us to the man himself.
Tumblr media
The life of Walter Kovacs is... a bit of a bummer, to say the least. His mother was a prostitute who regularly abused him and he had to endure a lot of bullying and torment by sexist pricks labelling him as a ‘whoreson.’ It’s this that has contributed to his view of women (more on that later) as well as his own distorted view of sex. In the extra material, we get to read some of Walter’s psychological profile, which includes a diary entry from a younger Walter describing a nightmare he had where his mother was ‘dancing’ with a man and, upon further inspection, realises the two have been morphed together into a grotesque monster that then chases him. A literal beast with two backs, if you will.
It’s also worth mentioning that the most significant moments in Walter’s life that led to him becoming Rorschach were all sex related and involved women. Obviously there’s his mother. There’s also the job he got at a women’s clothing store, which clearly made him feel extremely uncomfortable, the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, whose uncollected dress was used to make the Rorschach mask, and of course the murder of Blaire Roche. This I think is what led to Rorschach’s reductive view of women and also serves in some ways as a damning critique of how women are presented in comics. Every woman Walter has ever encountered has either been a helpless victim or a sexualised monster. Even Laurie, the Silk Spectre, contributes to this because of the sexualised image her mother forced onto her. In many comics, the assault or death of a woman often serves as the catalyst of a male hero’s journey, and Rorschach is the same, except it’s presented deliberately as being incredibly distorted. His relationship with women is already fraught thanks to his mother, but his encounters with Kitty Genovese and Blaire Roche serve as a way for him to justify his distorted view of reality. I particularly like the inclusion of the real life case of Kitty Genovese and the myth that over forty witnesses saw her being attacked and did nothing to help. Of course Walter seizes on this and uses it to support his worldview. We’re not even sure if the dress he uses to make the mask was actually intended for Kitty as it could just be a delusion that Walter has concocted to fit his narrative. Whereas other comics might use a woman’s pain as motivation for the male hero, here we see the male ‘hero’ use multiple women’s pain as a means to an end. A way of excusing his behaviour and justifying his actions. It’s a great reversal, exploring the sexism of the refrigerated woman trope.
Tumblr media
What I find especially interesting is how despite his childhood, despite his right wing views and despite his reductive view of women, in his early days you could accurately describe Rorschach as a proper superhero. During the period that Walter refers to himself as being ‘soft,’ he teams up with Nite Owl and stops many criminal masterminds such as Big Figure, Jimmy the Gimmick and Underboss. You get the feeling that, had he stuck with Nite Owl, he might have grown to be a somewhat more balanced individual. (which is not to say Dan doesn’t have flaws too, but he’s far better adjusted than Rorschach is, that’s for damn sure). It’s what comes later that sends Rorschach past the point of no return. And no I’m not talking about the murder of Blaire Roche, though that was probably the final straw. I’m talking about Rorschach’s first encounter with the Comedian.
See, I don’t think Rorschach would have become a murderer if he hadn’t met the Comedian first. In his interview with Malcolm, Walter speaks of the Comedian in glowing terms, saying he’s the only one that understood how the world works. If it wasn’t for the Comedian planting the seed of nihilism in Rorschach’s head, he might have reacted slightly differently when he discovered the fate of Blaire Roche. I’m not saying he wouldn’t have reacted violently, but I do honestly think it wouldn’t have been quite so extreme.
I’ve said in a previous review how all the characters of Watchmen are technically nihilists. Rorschach and Comedian are a perfect illustration of two contrasting ways of reacting to nihilism. Namely moral absolutism versus amorality. The Comedian believes that the world has no meaning and that morality is a joke, and so uses that as an excuse to commit heinous acts for his own amusement. Rorschach is also a nihilist. After his encounter with Gerald Grice, he learns that morality and meaning doesn’t exist, but unlike the Comedian, Rorschach takes the opportunity to impose his own morality onto the world. Like ink blots on a blank canvas. The problem is with his own warped sense of reality as well as his motivation. Having discovered that Gerald had killed Blaire Roche, dismembered her and fed her to his dogs, Rorschach no longer has any interest in helping people because, in his mind, people are beyond help. He just wants to hurt and punish those that ruined the world. This isn’t justice. This is revenge. Revenge based on faulty logic. Walter says this was the day he became Rorschach, but it’s also the day he stopped being a superhero as far as I’m concerned. While his motivations and worldview was questionable before, he was at least acting for the common good. Now he’s just an angry man lashing out at the world indiscriminately.
So why do some people have this romanticised view of Rorschach? Well one reason I think is because he’s a man who lives by his own code. Whether we admit to it or not, there is a part of us that wants to see the predators of our society get what they deserve, so even though we recognise that Rorschach is going too far and that his views and beliefs are unsavoury, there’s a little voice in the back of our heads that most of us may not want to acknowledge quietly whispering ‘yes.’ Because if these are truly evil people he’s doing these despicable things to, then it must be okay, right? But then we have to ask ourselves the same question we did about the Comedian back in Absent Friends. Are we saying that the moment someone commits a crime, their life becomes forfeit? That they deserve to die? What does that say about us and our own morality? Which leads to another reason why I believe some people romanticise Rorschach. It’s because it’s easier to romanticise Rorschach rather than to acknowledge what he potentially says about us.
I love Rorschach because, as a character, he forces us to ask some very awkward and uncomfortable questions about our own morality. How far is too far? Where do we draw the line? If the misogyny, psychotic behaviour and extreme violence aren’t deal-breakers, what is? Can we really excuse these poisonous views and beliefs if the person in question is acting, supposedly, for the greater good? This is what makes Rorschach such a fascinating character in my opinion. And I’m sorry to say that if you can’t bring yourself to think about these things, then I’m afraid you just don’t understand Rorschach, or indeed Watchmen, at all.

Dark Knights, Darker Queens (YanSim x Ouran Host Club)
Oka and Mori both catch the eye of one another after a few chance encounters. Ayano, weary of her friend's potential suitor and his friends, gets info on them and unknowingly brings The Shadow King of the host club into the crosshairs of Akademi's own operator from the shadows.

Chapter 1. Combustible Elements
****
A/N: I’ve been throwing this idea in head around for great long while and I think I’ll be putting all other projects on the back burner to get this done. This will be a lemon free story, rated M for some suggestive things. Also, there’s list of headcanons I concocted for this crossover, listed on my Tumblr here (those on ff dot net, just remove the spaces: https://olboypacman.tumblr.com/post/187175780544/dark–knights–darker-queens–yansim–x–ouran-host. One more thing, there will also be a number of bonus chapters that quite fit in with the narrative I’m trying to craft. I thank everyone for the continued support, likes and favorites of my work (and to the people on AO3, I hope you can come to enjoy my work, as this is going to be my first project posted to the site).
****
It’s the final day of the Japan Karate Federation’s national tournament (the first of its kind), aptly named: The Brightest of Youth Under the Heavens.
The tournament is an invite only showcase of Japan’s younger karate practitioners, 15-18, green belt-rank and up to show their mettle against one each other in a semi full-contact, open weight (no weight classes), 2 4-minute round, single elimination format. The event is being held in the Buraza Town Convention Center. The event’s competitors aren’t divided by gender, age or by form in an attempt to truly find The Brightest of Youth Under the Heavens.
Of those invited, the styles of karate represented are (as per the JKF’s recognition) wadō-ryū, shotokan, shito-ryu, goju-ryu and for the first time ever in a JKF sanctioned tournament, kyokushin.
It was with great controversy that kyokushin practitioners were even invited.
Budo’s father, Tatakai Masuta, had developed his own style of fighting based off his own mastery of the kyokushin style of karate and his experience as an amateur boxer and experience as a very successful career as a kickboxer. He’d even became an international star and national hero as a result of his exploits. Ta-Sensei, as he’s known affectionately among his students, describes the Masuta style as a more particle form of karate. Philosophically, he still emphasizes the discipline, self-discovery and self-improvement aspects like another forms of karate, but in terms of actual practice he emphasizes a no-frills approach. In practice, most other types of karate askew hand strikes to the head in order to adhere to the competitive standards of most sanctioning bodies, but Tatakai believes that cheapens what one can learn.
The Masuta style of karate had been brushed off as a bastardized style of a bastardized style by the purists of the community and more namely, the JKF. The big wigs of the JKF had announced this youth tournament a few months back with the Buraza venue in mind and immediately there was a clamoring for local standouts, Raibaru Fumetsu, Budo Masuta and the up and coming Ayano Aishi to participate.
But there was just one problem.
Raibaru was a pure kyokushin stylist and Budo’s and Ayano’s styles were both students of the Masuta, which is based on kyokushin.
The JKF didn’t recognize the kyokushin style as a sanctioned variation of karate under their organization’s regulations.
It caused a national uproar by fans of the elder Masuta, and the fact that such a high-profile competition was being held in Tatakai’s hometown was an even further insult.
The higher ups of the JKF had to decided, after consulting with Tatakai, to bring the kyokushin style under their regulation. Some of the JKF members had thought that Tatakai would go out his way to demand drastic changes to the rules to allow strikes to head during the competition, but Tatakai was surprisingly easy going about whole situation, considering he’s been going through his drama with the JKF since he was a boy.
He didn’t hold a grudge that he was barred from some of the more prestigious tournaments in the country as a youth for simply choosing what he thought was a more practical version of karate. It was actually that that pushed him into boxing and kickboxing, as he’d never been recognized as an elite karateka due to the JKF’s inclination against kyokushin.
He thought of the situation as more of a promotional opportunity for Masuta Karate. If one of his students or better yet his son was to place or win the whole tournament, it would be the ultimate vindication for him (it’s important to remember that he doesn’t hold a grudge for not being to compete in their competitions as a youth, honest!).
Budo Masuta was dressed in a plain black t-shirt and white gi pants, with white walking shoes and his signature headband missing, having given it to his most treasured kohai. He was currently walking from the refreshment area, eating a plain onigiri.
He’d been edged out on the judges score cards in his most recent bout of the competition by his perennial rival, the adorably diminutive karate virtuoso, Mitsukuni Haninozuka, after making it to the final 8.
Oddly enough Honey himself had just been knocked out of the tournament by the former Akademi karate club leader, Raibaru Fumetsu to secure her spot in the finals.
Now, he was his way back to the tournament area for Ayano’s semi-final match.
The floor of the convention center is awash with people making their way to their seats or crowding around the various monitors, watching the highlights and sound bites hyping this last semi-final bout.
For this event, the convention center was stripped down to its bare essentials. Its bleacher seats were pushed to walls revealing the solid grey concrete floor beneath. Instead of the bleachers, there were black steel chairs used instead. This was done to make way for several platforms raised about 4 feet off the ground to act as rings for the invited competitors. The platforms themselves were made steel and its sides covered by black canvas covers. The actual ‘rings’ are made of lengths of 2x4s covered over by a carpet pad with plain white canvas over top of them.
As he continues to make his way back his seat, he hears murmurs of anticipation for the next bout.
Ayano Aishi, Budo’s kohai, clubmate, and student (and crush) had blazed her way through the competition with frightening ease, despite her level of experience compared to the rest of her contemporaries. Budo’s guess is her proficiency is genetic as her mother had been scarily talented fighter in her youth.
“How long until Ayano-chan’s fight, Budo-kun?” His companion asked softly.
He stops and takes his phone out to check the time, “About ten minutes Oka-chan. Plenty of time for us to make it back to the seats Hiroshi and Ryoba-san saved for us.” Said Budo, excitedly.
Oka wears a look of mild worry, “Do you think we should make haste, Budo-kun? Ryoba-san can be scary when she’s kept waiting.” She responded quietly.
Oka Ruto’s been friends with Budo for as long as he can remember. Their mothers went to college together, or something along those lines.
The point is kind of moot by now…
Anyway, his shy, soft spoken and supernatural obsessed friend was currently dressed casually. Her dark-blue shoulder length hair is styled in her usual ‘messy’ way, a single fringe hanging over her the middle of her face. It forms a slight shadow over the top half of her face, giving her purple eyes an almost glowing appearance. On the subject of her eyes, they have rings underneath them. Her habit of staying up late researching and watching paranormal documentaries and movies being the culprit. Budo’s often lectured his friend about it, but obviously his lectures have gone ignored. She’s clothed in a black and purple striped long-sleeved shirt. Her top is complemented by a dress, who’s length is just above her knees. Her look is completed by long black socks and black heeled boots.
“Ryoba-san isn’t so bad, but it might be a good idea to hurry up.” Responded Budo.
“Budo-chan!” Yelled a high-pitched, sing-songy voice.
The martial artist turns to see his long-time rival making his way toward him with his younger cousin in tow.
Mitsukuni Haninozuka is waving excitedly at the duo of Budo and Oka, his wavy blonde hair swaying at his actions as he closes the distance between them. He’s still dressed in his gi, with walking shoes and a bag of candy clutched in his non-waving hand. He’s sporting a nasty bruise on the right side of his face as a result of his semi-final bout with Raibaru, she knocked him out via a left high kick to the head. Despite being thumped silly, his spirts are no less dampened, as evidenced by his bright smile and cheerful glow in his big brown eyes.
As always, his bigger, yet slightly younger cousin is bringing up the rear. Takashi Morinozuka was walking steadily, his face with a subdued expression. He’s wearing blue jeans, a dark grey zip-up hooded sweatshirt and a navy-blue t-shirt underneath it, and  black and white sneakers. The taller young man nods at Budo, as they arrived, Takashi standing to the side and behind Honey.
“Takashi-kun, Mitsukuni-kun, what’s up?” Says Budo.
“Not much,” responded Mitsukuni, “we were looking for our friends in hope of finding seats for your kohai’s semi-final match. Takashi had met me at the medic center after Rai-chan kicked me in the face. You haven’t seen any of them around have you?”
“Can’t say I have, unfortunately. Hey, have I introduced you two to my friend, Oka?”
“Oh, hey there Oka-chan! I’m Mitsukuni Haninozuka,” the smaller karateka said excitedly, as he bowed, “but my friends call me ‘Honey!’”
“Um...hi,” she said quietly, “I’m Oka Ruto.” She finished as she bowed slowly and meekly, “It’s nice to meet you, Honey-kun.”
A long pause goes over the group as they’re waiting for Mori to introduce himself. But the young man is currently occupying himself staring at Oka, a blush tickling his cheeks and his black eyes slightly wide. He possesses the look of a man who sees something he very much likes.
She’s…she’s beautiful. Thinks Mori.
Oka herself isn’t quite sure what to feel.
Despite the incredibly handsome, tall young man staring, no, outright ogling her, she feels a flutter in the pit of her stomach and her heart is starting to hammer in her chest. Not to mention she’s got a blush of her own is beginning to adorn her features.
“Uh…Takashi-kun?” Said Budo, trying to get his tall friend’s attention.
“Takashi…?” Asked Honey. “Takashi?”
The smaller martial artist then clears his throat, then cocks his arm back and elbows Mori in the gut.
The tall young man lets out an ‘oof’ at the impact.
“Takashi, you’re being pretty rude to our new friend!” Honey practically squeaked at his younger cousin.
At his chastisement, the blush on Takashi’s face intensifies at his rudeness, clearly embarrassed. He rubs at the spot his smaller cousin elbowed him at. “Sorry,” he said in his deep baritone, “I hope you can forgive my behavior.” He said stepping forward, taking a knee before the increasingly flustered young woman. He takes one of her hands in his, gently. “I am Takashi Morinozuka, it’s a pleasure to meet you Ruto-san.”
“Hmm,” Honey hummed quietly to himself, “Mori doesn’t usually lay it on this thick unless he’s tired, or…” He trails off, a knowing, assumed smile adorning his features.
“Um, ah, oh, I, uh,” mutters Oka, as she’s unsure of what to do.
Budo puts a hand on her shoulder, “Oka-chan, take a deep breath. Takashi, maybe you should…”
Takashi’s eyes widen and the blush on his cheeks, as if it were possible, gets even darker. Mori releases Oka’s hand while standing up to his full height and steps back to give her space. His hand goes up to the top of his head, finding a spot to scratch in an attempt occupy himself from his embarrassment.
Budo, having just polished off his onigiri, laughs heartily at his friends and shares a look with Honey, “Oka-chan, as you were.”
Oka then begins to anxiously fiddle with hem of her shirt, while looking away from Mori. “It’s nice to meet you too, Takashi-kun,” she said softly, a subtle smile coming on to her face.
“Ah, Honey-senpai, Mori-senpai, there you are,” interrupts a smooth voice, “the next bout is about to start.”
“Sorry we kept you waiting, Kyo-chan,” said Honey, “I saw Budo-chan and wanted to say hello, and we made a new friend in Oka-chan!”
The aforementioned ‘Kyo-chan’, dressed in a tan unbuttoned shirt, with white undershirt and jeans, pushes up his glasses and says, “Be that as it may, the rest of us has been waiting on you, not just in anticipation of next match, but also an update on your health. That was a nasty kick you took.” He steps forward, eyeing Honey critically. “I wonder how that bruise will affect business.” He muttered, quietly. “Anyway, I think it’s best we make haste to our seats. Tamaki’s been particularly insufferable since your loss. I’m very close to doing something I may regret.” The bespectacled young man turns toward Budo and Oka. “Masuta-san, it’s nice to see you again. Oka-san, sorry I couldn’t formally meet your acquaintance, but we really must be going.” He said, bowing to the Akademi High students.
“It’s fine, Ootori-san. Another time.” Said Budo.
Kyoya begins to make his way from Oka and Budo. Honey waives his goodbye as he turns to join him and Mori nods at them, giving a small smile to Oka before he joins the other two.
“I think that boy put a spell on me…” Said Oka, as she put her hands to her chest, attempting to slow down her heart.
****
By the time Oka and Budo got to the seating area, Ayano and her opponent are already in the middle of the no-rope ring being given their pre-match instructions.
“Budo-kun, Oka-chan! It took you two long enough!” Said, Ayano’s mother, Ryoba Aishi. The beautiful, flawless faced, and youthful Aishi matriarch is wearing look of slight impatience, her lips forming a thin line and her grey eyes are narrowed in annoyance. She’s dressed in her usual slightly undersized navy-blue t-shirt, with a black leather jacket over it and blue jeans and her black hair is tied in a long braid that’s hanging over one of her shoulders.
“Ryoba, dear,” said a just as youthful looking black-haired man seated next to her, in a composed voice, “what matters is that they’re here to support Ayano, right?” He finished, flashing a brilliantly bright smile at the ebony haired woman, gently taking her hand in his.
“My darling Hiroshi!” Ryoba said, her annoyance melting away. “You’re right!” She gets up from her chair and yells, “You knock ‘em dead, sweety! Show them what Aishis are made of!” She directs her gaze back to the other two teenagers, “Come on, take a seat you two!”
Hiroshi Aishi, Ayano’s father smiled at his wife, his almost boyish features and dark-brown eyes glowing with adoration for woman before him. He’s dressed in a white polo shirt under a black sport coat with khaki pants. He runs a hand over his clean-shaven face, turning his smile to the two students, appearing much younger than he is, “Glad you can make it.”
“Sorry,” Oka and Budo intoned at the same time, before they took their seats.
“I wouldn’t have missed this for the world, plus Ayano would’ve handed me my head had I not shown up.” Budo said jokingly.
The competitors make their way back to their respective corners. Ayano, clad in off white gi top and pants with a green belt tied around her waist and red gloves and shin pads on her hands and feet, makes eye contact with Budo as she does. She gives him a small smile, her tied back black hair and the ends of her headband (Budo’s headband) swaying and bouncing as she walks.
“Nope, not for the world.” He said shooting a smile of his own at his cherished kohai.
The aged, salt-and-pepper haired referee for this semi-final bout is dressed as expected, in a black and white stripped shirt, black pants, black shoes and black rubber gloves adorning his hands.
“Blue corner, are you ready?” The ref yells, pointing to Ayano’s opponent, who’s dressed in a white gi top and pants, a black belt with gold stipe and blue gloves and shin pads on his hands and legs respectively. He’s about a head and half taller than Ayano and about as built as Budo. He nods his head in the affirmative to the ref, his medium length spiky hair swaying with the motion and his light brown eyes trained in determination on Ayano.
“Red corner, are you ready?” The ref bellowed once more, this time pointing to Ayano, her expression and shimmering grey eyes showing her will and determination.
“Round 1, fight!” Yelled the ref, as he made a downward gesture with is hands, stepping back from the middle of the ring.
Ayano steps to middle of the ring in a stable fighting stance. Her feet are about shoulder width apart, left hand and foot forward in an orthodox stance. She’s very light on her left leg, only standing on the balls of the foot. In contrast, her right leg is flat on the ground, her leg almost completely straight. She’s holding her arms tight around her body, right hand almost touching her cheek and left held in front of her. Usually her head would be tucked, her chin in her chest, and her shoulders would be high, but due to hand strikes to the head being illegal, there was no need. As she moves toward her opponent, she does steadily, methodically, with no movement wasted seemingly.
Her opponent his much less static in his stance. He’s up on the balls of his feet, bouncing about, his right hand and leg forward in southpaw stance. His feet wider apart than Ayano’s and his hands are chest level. He has to come to a complete stop in regard to his bouncing in order to move.
This is part of the reason Tatakai modified his kyokushin base for Masuta style karate.
Waisted movement.
Ayano closes the distance between them and for her opening gambit, throws a left low kick. The blow lands with a low thud, the kick having impacted the outside of her opponent’s thigh of his lead leg.
Her opponent’s eyes widen, that fist attack having done damage.
The young man opposite the Masuta karate disciple responds by throwing a kick his own. He launches a low right kick. He however launched it in a panic. His mistiming of his attack caused his leg to ride up Ayano’s left leg.
Ayano responds by catching his leg, then throws another kick at the fighter, now on one leg.
It has the effect one would expect, it knocks him down.
The ref steps in between the two, yelling, “Down!”
The official motions for the young man to stand asking if he’s alright.
The young man nods in the affirmative, readying himself for further combat.
The referee waives the action onward and Ayano goes back to work. She opens up with a jab-hook combo to her opponent’s midsection, pushing him back. He further gets a push kick to his midsection for his trouble. He tries a combination of own, stepping in with a jab. Ayano deflects it easily, but it was just a ruse to get her attention. He slams a long-left body kick to her midsection, his instep landing just below her chest. The power of that kick had knocked Ayano off balance. While she recovered, the young man had swarmed her, trying a punching combination of his own. He however was over eager in his approach and ended up right against Ayano as a result. The dark-haired young woman manages to get double underhooks on the young man, swimming both of her arms underneath his, grabbing hold of his gi. She places her head underneath his chest, standing him straight up as she forces him back little-by-little. She suddenly breaks her hold him, forcefully pushing him back, completely breaking his balance. As he tries to steady himself from being shoved, Ayano launches a right high kick at his head.
But at that moment, a horn sounds signifying the end of the round.
Ayano stops her kick, centimeters from her opponent’s face, ‘oos’ and ‘ahs’ coming over the crowd at the near landing of the kick.
“Stop!” Yells the official, signaling the competitors back to their respective corners.
Ryoba stands from her chair and yells, “Just like that Ayano! You almost had him! One more round like that and you’ve got it in the bag!”
Hiroshi claps subtilty at his daughter’s productive round.
“Keep up those low kicks next round, Ayano! He respects them and hasn’t shown adequate defense against them.” Budo yells at Ayano.
She nods at her friends and family, readying herself for the next round, the rest period rapidly coming to an end.
The referee signals the two fighters to be ready for second and final round.
At the bell, he gestures for the fight to begin again.
Ayano opens up by following Budo’s instruction, committing to low kicks, her opponent having no real answer for them.
He eventually starts to respond by throwing left rear straight at Ayano’s face, in a desperate attempt to keep her off of him. He doesn’t land on her head, but it’s enough to get, not just Ayano’s attention, but various spectators as well.
“Hey!” Yelled Ryoba.
“Illegal tactics ref, come on!” Yelled Budo.
Ayano continues to work her way through the match, eventually responding to her opponent’s straights by palming them to deflect them, bringing her right arm up from her body to do so.
The jeering at the young man’s straight attempts get to the point where the ref stops the fight, with 2:00 minutes remaining in the fight.
He pulls the young man to the side, warning (but not penalizing) him to watch the punches to the head, much to the vexation of the crowd and their loud boos.
He walks over to side of ring where the judges are situated.
“He’s technically not landing anything to the head,” said the ref to the judges, “but he’s getting close. That why he was warned and didn’t have any points deducted.”
The official steps back to center of the ring waiving the fight back on.
Ayano’s opponent goes right back throwing those jabs to the head, always falling short and Ayano always palming them to deflect them.
The young man throws one more rear straight, this time taking a big step forward, a wicked smile adorning his face as he does so.
Her right hand comes forward once more to deflect it, her arm leaving that same side flank vulnerable.
He pulls his left hand back at the last minute, instead bringing his left leg forward for a kick.
It lands flush on Ayano’s right side, impacting her liver. As always with a blow to the liver, the reaction to it is delayed.
She falls down a second or two after the kick landed, holding her right side, the pain so intense she’s unable to do much else.
“Aya-chan!” Yells Hiroshi.
“Ayano!” Yells, Ryoba, Oka and Budo.
Ayano’s usually passive-faced visage is twisted in agony, as she writhes around in pain.
A wave of boos comes at Ayano’s opponent at his questionable tactic.
The young man, looking all too pleased with himself, is motioned to a corner as the referee starts to count out the downed Aishi legacy.
Ayano starts to work her way to her feet through the intense pain as the ref counts to ten.
Through it all she gets to her feet at 8, her kicked liver still throbbing agonizingly.
She’s doubled over, holding her body as the ref approaches, “Can you continue?”
She nods in the affirmative, grey eyes reminiscent of her mother’s simmering with determination, despite her body language indicating otherwise.
The ref waives the bout on ward, and Ayano’s opponent presses his advantage. He charges toward her aggressively and throws another straight, but Ayano lets it fall short. He then brings his rear hand forward once more, not throwing a punch to the head, but grabbing her right hand, pulling it forward by the glove, bringing her right hand from her body once more. With that same opening in her defense exposed once more he throws another kick to right side, targeting her liver. It lands again, hard. The pain is worse this time, as the agony of the previous liver strike hadn’t quite left her system and is tacked on top of this most recent liver kick.
Amazingly, Ayano remains on her feet despite her body screaming at her to go do through all the pain and she leans over in further anguish.
The young karateka opposite her further presses his lead, throwing a body kick, this blocked by Ayano lowering her guard. He goes for one more kick. Ayano defends to her body again, seemingly smart to the young man’s plan. The kick, a question mark kick, was faked to the body, but went high to Ayano’s unprotected head, creating a smacking sound audible throughout the area.
Ayano falls over, knocked out, crumpling under her own body weight as the gift of consciousness is no longer contributing to holding her up.
The referee waives the bout off at the advent of the unconscious young woman being struck so.
“Ayano!” Yells Budo as he tried to storm the ring.
The in-ring official waives medical personnel to the scene to help the knocked-out young woman.
Budo’s stopped by the event security from getting to his downed kohai, “Get the hell the off me! Ayano!” He yelled as struggled with the security guards.
“Budo-kun!” Said Hiroshi, sternly, defusing the scene, stopping the tussling security guards and Budo in their tracks. “Look,” he said pointing.
He pointed to the scene of Ayano being attended to by the various medical personnel, already having her seated up under her own power.
“They’ve got her, son. They’ve got her. How about I grab the girls, you lead us to the med tent and meet we Ayano there, huh Budo?” Said Hiroshi, calmly to his daughter’s senpai.

“Oh, my dear sweet baby!” Yelled Ryoba as she held Ayano’s head to her ample chest as she was sat on a dark teal cot.
“Um, Aishi-san? Your daughter just suffered a concussion, I think you might be suffica-“ Started to complain a female doctor.
Ryoba turns her head to medical professional, eyeballing her skeptically for more than one reason.
“No, it’s fine,” said Hiroshi, smiling at his wife and daughter, scratching the back of his head in worry, “it’s best to let her get it out of her system.”
Ayano manages to get some breathing room between her mom and her, before she utters, “I’m fine mom, it’s just a concussion. The doctor says no sparing for a month, and I’ll be fine. But I’m still smarting from those liver shots.”
Ryoba further fusses over her little girl at proclamation of still being in pain. “My goodness, I’ll never let you compete again!”
“Mom!” Said Ayano in protest.
“Then that Tatakai better button his style of karate! Otherwise it will be him getting kicked in head.” Said Ryoba, hugging her daughter tightly once more.
“Ba-chan,” said Hiroshi, “she said she’s fine, let the girl breath.”
Ryoba reluctantly lets her daughter go at her husband’s behest, “Okay, but you’re just going fuss over her yourself.”
“You got me, Ryoba. But she’s my little girl too,” he said as he approached the daughter-in-mother’s-embrace duo.
Ryoba hesitates to give the girl room, looking between her two loves. She sighs audibly, “I trust you both, I just… I just worry okay?”
Ryoba steps back, but not before she lays a kiss to her daughter’s forehead, “Mom! Come on! Budo-kun and Oka-chan are here!” She said, as she smiled slightly and looked to her friends.
Ryoba chuckles lowly as she steps away from Ayano, her place being taken by Hiroshi.
“I’m proud of you, Aya-chan. You did well. Do promise to be careful next time?” He said, as he ran rubbed the top of her head.
She swats playfully at his hand. “Of course, the last thing I want to do is worry you, dad. You’ve got enough to worry about with, well you know…”
“No worries, Aya!” He said, as he turned and started make his way to his wife, who herself is eyeballing the lady doctor who’s rapidly shrinking under Ryoba’s gaze. He takes her hand, bringing attention to him. “Ryoba, lets hit the merch stand!” He said, before they left. “I’ll leave you in Budo’s and Oka’s hands.” He stops, thinking further, “Actually, on second thought, Budo hands off! Oka take care of our girl!”
“Aishi-san!” Said Budo, flabbergasted at the implication.
“So, I hear you made quite a stir when I got beat, Budo-kun.” Said Ayano.
“Well, you got kicked in the face! I just did what,” he hesitates, his cheeks blushing, “what any friend would do in the situation.”
“So, start a fight with the security to get to me?”
“Well, I um…” Budo stammers.
Ayano and Oka both laugh at their friend’s expense.
