Books of 2024: KILLING FLOOR by Lee Child.
This isn't a genre I typically read; HOWEVER!: my dream agent was on an episode of the Writing Excuses podcast about beginnings, and they said this one is Very Good, so I borrowed my dad's paperback copy to give it a whirl.
I'm low-key hoping this will help me sort out some Genre Issues™ I suspect I'm having with a writing project, too, which is a nice added bonus! Excited to see how this goes.

💭 What inspires you and your writing?
this is a real marketing major-ass answer (from your local marketing major), but i love sharing knowledge and telling stories. writing’s one of those things that’s a bit of a compulsion for me—i’m always writing something. i took a five-year break from fiction writing before i stumbled ass-first into fanfic last year, but even in those years when i was focusing on my career, i was writing guides and trainings and a ton of other stuff—just not anything fun, lol.
writing is also so cathartic. sometimes i set out to tell a specific story, but at other times, a particular emotion gets me in a vice grip and i have to put it to words before it’ll go away. my stories tend to wind up as emotional dumping grounds as a result.
i don’t write things pulled directly from my own life, but there are bits and pieces of myself and things that have happened to me scattered throughout stuff i’ve written, and usually when i’m about 75% of the way through a piece, i’ll realize it’s absolutely related to something i’m currently going through. funny how art works that way, even when you don’t intend for it to.
and occasionally i just have a fire lit under my ass about an issue and i get so hot about it that i gotta compile my thoughts. looking at you, silver snow
🚦 What sort of endings do you prefer to write: ambiguous, bad, happily ever after, etc.?
look, i would love nothing more for them girls (pick whichever girls you please) to have a happy ending where they kiss and are stupid in love for the rest of forever. i love reading those kinds of stories. but in my heart of hearts, i love an ambiguous ending. i like when there are still questions after the story ends. i like thinking about where things could go or how the characters will go on after the events of the story. like, shared space could be read as having a happy ending, but i don’t really think it is. and with the victors; the vestiges, well. you’ll see :0)
come to think of it, i’m not sure i’ve ever written a happily-ever-after, but i don’t think i’ve ever written a 100% bad ending, either. i read too many bury-your-gays stories and watched too many sad european queer coming-of-age films in my youth to ever be happy putting that kinda thing out into the world. i want to write about love with all its ugliness, but not despair or hopelessness. i think what most appeals to me about an ambiguous ending is that lingering feeling of hope. it’s not the same as the kind you get from a happily-ever-after, and something about it speaks to me.
💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing?
honestly? how to take criticism. i took a creative writing class in high school where we had to read our work out loud and then receive feedback on it from the other writers in the class, and that did a lot for me. going into that class, i’d already been writing for forever and had won some little local writing contests and such, so i was a wee bit of a pretentious douche. but i’d never gotten real critique before beyond, essentially, spelling and grammar checks. it humbled me lol. it made me grow so much as a writer, and i could see where i needed to improve or where my head was wedged way too far up my own ass for others to follow. it also helped me recognize strengths i didn’t know i had, and that was huge. it’s easy to get into a self-doubt spiral when making creative work, and good, constructive criticism can do so much to help avoid that.
to this day i love critique. i like knowing what worked or didn’t work so that i can continue to improve as a writer and do better next time. did my themes land? did something really work, but another part fall flat? i’d love to know!! i try to treat everything i write as practice for the next thing, and frankly that’s helped take some of the pressure off so i don’t go into total Perfectionist Mode.
i know critique is kind of a sensitive topic in fan spaces, but i think that’s because a lot of people have gotten unsolicited criticism that is purely critical and isn’t constructive. but getting good, constructive criticism will do so much to help a person grow as a writer. it’s scary, and sometimes it hurts! writing is very personal for most people, and it stings when things aren’t received the way you think they will be. but i know i’ve grown more from having my failures pointed out (and, very importantly, having the good things about those efforts acknowledged) than anything else.

AND Ive been bald recently#honest to gods can Not tell how well I did in the written tests. like I finished all of them with at least ten minutes to spare#but it's because they kept putting a giant timer on the projector screen and it scared me so bad. delf trauma#the content of the test itself I straight up. dont know if its any good#the thing with me. that u can probably tell by idk looking at me and hearing me talk and stuff. is that I speak english but I am#VERY bad at tests#which makes any formalized english testing for me extremely fucking funny#and like it's supposed to be in the same structure as an ielts set of questions and apparently that means#they kept asking me to confirm or deny that the author of the text agrees with the statements they got in the questions#and I was sitting there like okay you made me read about weird phrenology shit and then you ask me this?? like are we asking#textual or contextual or. how deep into the rhetorics are we talking here. cause two of these three authors are certified weirdos#(yes the reading segment had three texts. one was about physiognomy and how there was definitely a grain of truth in there#one was about tea - this is the inconspicuous one - and the last one was about the potentials of toxinology#with a general vibe of pseudomedicine zeal to its writing. it's probs from a family magazine or something)#so straight up yeah I can defend my quiz answers to a judge but that does Not mean it's gonna be the one on the answer sheet yknow#kinda the same with the writing segment. where like they gave me an extremely easy to expand on subject and then a piece of paper#the length of a receipt. and that just. I could NOT parse the expectation of that setup#like I saw that and was like. so do you want me to do it badly? or do it so excellently I deliver all I think in like 100 words or less?#cause I'm capable of one of those things and the distinction is important here#and like. yes I know it's a language aptitude test. they're looking to know if I speak english#and I Have done something like this before multiple times just with a different language. but that was. idk I have never had a ladder here#I know I speak the language. YOU can probably tell I speak the language. would this test's result reflect that? I don't know!#it's a baffling experience. I'm still thinking about it the day after. tldr it's really not about the english for me it's about the testing#it's so. it's reflected so clear in the listening test where I missed an entire question (other than the one they gave us for free) bc#my brain just noped out of my body for three seconds and when I yanked it back the tape's already moved on

there’s stuff i’m actually mad about re: tumblr rn and the MAIN one that pisses me off is the prev tags chain thing. like even before ‘prev tags’ took off and became a hot topic it was still common to just click back through to see other people’s tags. and while there is now a way to click back through to OPs post or the previous post by clicking the right part of the post, you can’t then go back to the blog BEFORE that one. which fucking sucks (actually i haven’t updated the app since this started and i’m using xkit on desktop so idek what state this is all in rn)
but anyway i don’t even hate it as much as other things it just makes me the angriest bc there is NO reason for it, and no reason not to listen to the userbase and switch it back. and it frustrates me when i see complaints about it on staff posts right next to complaints about tumblr live bc like… you know that’s never gonna change right?? obviously no one uses tumblr live, everyone wants to be able to turn it off permanently and not have to snooze it every week - but given all of that, i think it’s pretty clear that it’s executive-level decisions that tumblr is being made to implement?? like, the fact that there is a “snooze” option at all, to ME, says “we know none of you want this so this is how we compromised”
and similarly the fucking new viewer for pictures/gifs (why anyone thought it was a good idea to include images and gifs in this rather than just videos, i don’t know). that’s probably what i hate the most but i can see why there is pressure to do something like this and i don’t think feedback is going to make a difference. the reblog chains thing just fucking baffles me and i hate that they haven’t listened on that one - they did with the marketplace icon!!!

i just had like A Thought, as im making lambda gifs?
its weird to articulate and might not make complete sense, so bear with me
but like... comparing lambda and nu’s sword effects. there’s a cool distinction going on there, which is:
lambda, who is a predecessor but not necessarily a prototype, per se. her swords are more....... bulky and needlessly. clunky. jagged. comparatively. (despite it being called sword summoner EX in fight, ignoring that for the sake of simplicity, it to me just indicates nu existed first playably). i mostly noticed this from crescent saber ngl.
but nu, on the other hand, the actual Proper murakumo unit wielder. everything is more streamlined and (they’re physically the same size but.. SEEMINGLY) compact and efficient.
it just struck me as an interesting detail

The autistic urge to make my hermit designs look EXTREMELY fucking funky but hesitant for claims of them not looking enough like what people normally draw
#when I say fucking funky I just mean super fuckin odd jfjfjf like none of them are human in any way. and not even like a monster hybrid way#but like they're straight up mostly not human#for clarification: I have 3 sets of hermit designs if you count the batch referenced here#batch 1 are the ones I normally like to use in my drawings. like the ones you might've seen on the sketch post#batch 2 are way more artificial-like. like based on toys and machinery#and then even deciding what headcanon-base I wanna go off with em depends on what designs I'll use#batch 1 is closely tied with the whole 'the hermits are gods' thing as their more human-like forms but they do have large monster ones#and batch 2 is tied with more. weird shit. like they're all robots or machines or something and there's a lot of creepy science stuff there#sometimes I throw em together for kicks#and I guess this would be batch 3 which is more like. just solid weirdness? just guys but odd#it's why I'm hesitant to post stuff about batches 2 and 3 because they're just funky stuff that goes out of the norm?#I both have equal amounts of fun with them though! like I have something that ties into server resets for batch 2#AND IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE THESE AREN'T AUS? like they're just versions with different visual design and world ideas???#but otherwise it's all the same???#maybe I'll talk about em some day but uuuuuh yeah people might not like em because they're too far out of the norm for non-au designs ig?#I DID NOT MEAN TO TALK THIS MUCH. I will say as a watcher of super if you want to skip to when they get to the tournament of power (take 2) its good also we get more Gohan and piccolo fighting together like I skipped the whole evil fake goku in the future arch cause it was so long and so boring
to be honest i'll probably wait until after i finish dbz to make a decision but as of rn i do not wish to watch any super arc bc i literally dont give a shit abt the fights or new characters i just wanna see the leisure/filler scenes

i think something thats really cool of me is that i always squeeze in as much time possible to enjoy my interests.. like i always have a book with me and books on my phone and articles saved and a whatsapp chat with myself full of links to check out whenever i have time....
#and what left me feeling weird is that i dont think my friends noticed#(by friends i mean a specific circle of irls#)#i kind of have this image to them of like airhead who magically knows stuff#most of my general knowledge is attributed to divine intervention or to my dad#(dont give that man so much credit sometimes i know more than him and it delights me)#so when we spent a lot of time in closed quarters due to travelling together at the beginning of this month they actually noticed#that all of my general knowledge and fullness to the brim abt random shit that interests me comes from active pursuit#bc by being w me 24/7 they saw me in action etsrdytfuygiuhio#anyways compare this to the scholarly image i have in other irl circles and its p funny#🐇☁️

Ayyy hi Lowkey, ty for the ask! Or asks if but I'm getting this one done because I've left you waiting for a hot minute lmao.
A song I've been listening to a lot recently that I can't pin to an exact character, but kind of fits DbD really well to me and I felt would be worth putting here as well is COUNT THOSE FREAKS by Whitey. Good chunk of the lyrics fit really well imo.
For DbD characters, I have a decent handful actually! I've made some playlists for them. I'll share a couple! Unsurprisingly, I have a decent chunk for Claudette, and for Philip too.
For Claudette, two I associate heavily with her are Quiet by Lights, and Plant Life by Owl City.
For Philip, I have Hollow by Cloudeater, Black Cat by Never Shout Never, and White Face, Black Eyes by AJJ. I have a WHOLE lot more for him that I feel really fit him, but I'll leave it at 3 for this.
For other characters, Nightmares & Flare Guns by Seb Adams is a song I feel really fits Quentin, Ghosts With Heartbeats by Plastic Patina I associate with the Nurse, Leopard by Jack Stauber I associate with Ace, and After Party by Air Traffic Controller is a song I heavily associate with all of the Legion.
Sharing music is something that's actually very personal to me, and something I really enjoy doing, especially with people I am on good terms with and really like, or want to get to know better. just people with good vibes to me ig? I've only rly described it right once, because it's very hard to place, but music is very important to me, and I always enjoy sharing it with people I think might enjoy it, or at least give it a shot, even if it might not be their thing. Feels like sharing a piece of my soul, kind of. I dunno lol.
