The thought of needing to inform FERDINAND I of his having a namesake makes you a bit ill, but you are already hard at work devising several plausible excuses for the gesture. Something about how you've named it after the one most invested in its naming, or how it is similarly prone to drooling. Yes. Yes, you will be able to deflect quite easily, should the need arise. It has nothing to do with your fondness for FERDINAND or your desire for a substitute in his imminent absence, no—again, you are not so prone to sentimentality. It's about the drool.

Well, anyway. Best to move on with your day and think about something else, lest you grow maudlin or cultivate further affection for the PLANT. May the GODDESS be merciful and never cause you to develop inclinations that could be described as paternal.

Now that your plant has received sufficient care, it is time for COFFEE. You set to making your morning brew. By CHANCE, there happens to be sufficient water remaining in the kettle for FERDINAND I to have TEA, should he wish it.

Per your TIMEPIECE, it is now a quarter to eight. You have made excellent progress on your PRE-BREAKFAST TO-DO LIST thus far: the only remaining task is to remove FERDINAND. You are starting to get rather peckish and would like to be rid of him quickly, but over the past week, you have found that extracting the man from YOUR QUARTERS is a more arduous task than it ought to be.

Truly you have been blessed by the explosion of modern technology now that such developments are uninhibited by the maneuverings of ANCIENT DRAGONS in positions of ecclesiastic power. Never again need you scurry to the window to make out the clocktower or attempt to recall precisely how many times the church bells last rang: now, you are wholly your own man, trapping time in your POCKET.

As you squandered your first glance in a stupor of admiration, you spare a second glance at the TIMEPIECE and see that it is currently half past seven. You have some time before your meeting with your ASSASSINS at nine, but you still need to complete your PRE-BREAKFAST TO-DO LIST and also have BREAKFAST.

Your next task will be to water your PLANT. Your PLANT was a gift from BERNADETTA, coincidentally also received exactly one year ago today. You regard your PLANT and are satisfied with its condition. You are not so taken to sentimentality as she, but when you made to mock her to FERDINAND, he—to your disappointment, if not your surprise—agreed, and tasked you to assigning one.

This exercise does not please you. But to acquiesce would require little effort on your part—and besides, you only need hold to this practice until the end of the month, after which time FERDINAND will not be here to badger you about the issue.

Your clothing choices have always been appropriate for any situation you may encounter throughout the course of your busy, busy days: formal occasions such as PUBLIC AUDIENCES with HER MAJESTY, more casual meetings with ASSASSINS or members of the BLACK EAGLE STRIKE FORCE, or your various other chores and TASKS.

Last night, however, FERDINAND voiced that he would be rather keen on seeing you in an atypical outfit, seeing as today is a special day. You do not agree that the day is special in any way, but it seems a small favor to try something a tad different.

You should choose your outfit wisely, as it may be a while before you have time to get back to your room and change should you elect to wear something particularly daring.

Like everything else in your JOURNAL, your TO-DO LIST is written in your SECRET CODE. You make a new list for yourself every night before you go to bed and update it throughout the day to ensure you complete the myriad tasks YOUR JOB requires. You are very good at YOUR JOB, so you always complete your tasks on time and in a satisfactory manner. It would be very unusual for you to perform poorly at a task or to not complete it by the deadline. If such a thing were to occur, you would not be having a normal day.

The YOU of last night assigned the following tasks to the YOU of today:

When making this TO-DO LIST, you were surprised to note that today will be a very light day for you. Most days, the number of tasks you have to complete numbers well into the double digits and has, on many occasions, gone into the triples. Some part of you wishes that you had more tasks to do, such that you will not invite the possibility of being struck by something so atrocious as DOWN TIME.

You are not religiously inclined, but if there is still a GODDESS or some other powerful hand directing your movements, you surmise they either:

have taken pity on you and wish to aid you in having a normal, uncomplicated day;

Although he too often forgets his place as LADY EDELGARD’S inferior, and his normal speaking volume rings the ears, and his snoring really ought to be addressed with a qualified physician posthaste, there are aspects of him you do not detest. His company is not loathsome. He has ideas that are occasionally sound. His puerile optimism is admirably indefatigable. And from a wholly objective view, he is handsome and big.

However much it pains you to admit it, you have counted FERDINAND as one of YOUR FRIENDS for some time now.

Two weeks ago at the GARREG MACH reopening celebration, you both engaged in a tad too much revelry and awoke the next day in a position not dissimilar from your current one. Since your return to the ADRESTIAN CAPITAL last week, the two of you have made a habit of waking up like this.

But at the end of the month, the Emperor’s COUNCIL will break for the summer, and FERDINAND will return home to DUCHY AEGIR until the Verdant Rain Moon.

You are trying very hard not to think about it. If you spend any amount of time thinking about it, you will not have a good day.

You decide to get up and begin your morning routine before this starts to properly distress you. The snoring situation is becoming so dire that you will not be able to tolerate staying in bed much longer, anyway.

You should get dressed and take a look at your TO-DO LIST before you do anything else.

Today is the 17th of the Great Tree Moon in Imperial Year 1188. You wake up in YOUR QUARTERS in the palace of ENBARR, the capital of ADRESTIA. You are fond of YOUR QUARTERS. Your room contains all of your favorite things, such as your BOOKS and POTION-MAKING SET and your collection of EERIE KNICK-KNACKS.

Through the window beside your BED, you can see the sun beginning to crest on the horizon and can feel a light spring breeze. HOW TO PLAY

What is this?

This is a collaborative story about Hubert von Vestra from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The goal of the game is to help Hubert have a perfectly normal day without too much excitement or fanfare.

The story progresses based on the results of the poll at the end of each chapter. The gameplay is intended to emulate old text-based adventure games (and, yes, Homestuck).

Mostly, this is an excuse for me to draw stupid stuff.

I'll draw a panel and write a post. The end of the post will contain a poll or other question to decide where the story goes next.

You can help direct the story by:

Asking for clarification or details via ask or by replying to the post, ex. in the replies on this post

In each post, words that appear in BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS have definitions in Hubert's JOURNAL. The first time a defined word appears in a post, it will link to the part in the journal where the definition appears. Any subsequent time the word appears in the post, it will only be BOLDED AND CAPITALIZED.

The post may also contain links to minigames I've made (ex. the coffee game) or to other pages on my website that are related to the game (ex. Hubert's inventory, aka his pocket). I don't intend to link to any other websites, but if I do end up linking to another site in the post, I'll give a heads up.

Depending on the choices made in the story, Hubert's mental state may be affected. You will want to keep that in mind when voting. Remember: YOU are Hubert. And you want to have a perfectly normal day.

How does voting work?

Options for Hubert to take will be listed in a poll at the end of each post. The poll duration will be one day. When the time has elapsed, Hubert will take the highest-voted action. I'll write/draw how it plays out, then post a new poll to choose the next action.

Polls will have a minimum of four options representing potential actions for Hubert to take. Three or more will be preset options, and the last will be an "Other/Write-In" option for a custom response.

How will the story play out?

I have an outline for the story. To the best of my ability, I'm going to try and keep it on track, but I'm leaving most of it to the winds of chance. If things start to really get off-track, I may eliminate the write-in option and just give three preset choices, but here's hoping it doesn't come to that.

When does the game update?

The game will update after the current poll has expired and whenever I get around to drawing and writing the response. I'm making an attempt to turn things around in 24-48 hours after the poll ends, but who knows how long I'll keep that up.

Note that many of the pages for game mechanics, such as the JOURNAL and Mind Wasteland, are updated almost as often as new posts are made, depending on how the story plays out. You might want to keep an eye on those.

STORY DETAILS

What knowledge do I need going into this game?

The game is set just over two years after the end of Crimson Flower.

There may be references to events that have happened in my post-war fanfic series, In the Days After. However, you don't need to have read the series to know what's going on in the game. Hubert will also keep notes on anything that is relevant in his journal and you can reference the information there.

(FYI: the journal, minigames, and related tools are not hosted on tumblr and is instead on my own website for formatting/organization purposes. I'll give a heads up if linking to any pages not on this blog or my own website.)

💭 What inspires you and your writing?

this is a real marketing major-ass answer (from your local marketing major), but i love sharing knowledge and telling stories. writing’s one of those things that’s a bit of a compulsion for me—i’m always writing something. i took a five-year break from fiction writing before i stumbled ass-first into fanfic last year, but even in those years when i was focusing on my career, i was writing guides and trainings and a ton of other stuff—just not anything fun, lol.

writing is also so cathartic. sometimes i set out to tell a specific story, but at other times, a particular emotion gets me in a vice grip and i have to put it to words before it’ll go away. my stories tend to wind up as emotional dumping grounds as a result.

i don’t write things pulled directly from my own life, but there are bits and pieces of myself and things that have happened to me scattered throughout stuff i’ve written, and usually when i’m about 75% of the way through a piece, i’ll realize it’s absolutely related to something i’m currently going through. funny how art works that way, even when you don’t intend for it to.

and occasionally i just have a fire lit under my ass about an issue and i get so hot about it that i gotta compile my thoughts. looking at you, silver snow

🚦 What sort of endings do you prefer to write: ambiguous, bad, happily ever after, etc.?

look, i would love nothing more for them girls (pick whichever girls you please) to have a happy ending where they kiss and are stupid in love for the rest of forever. i love reading those kinds of stories. but in my heart of hearts, i love an ambiguous ending. i like when there are still questions after the story ends. i like thinking about where things could go or how the characters will go on after the events of the story. like, shared space could be read as having a happy ending, but i don’t really think it is. and with the victors; the vestiges, well. you’ll see :0)

come to think of it, i’m not sure i’ve ever written a happily-ever-after, but i don’t think i’ve ever written a 100% bad ending, either. i read too many bury-your-gays stories and watched too many sad european queer coming-of-age films in my youth to ever be happy putting that kinda thing out into the world. i want to write about love with all its ugliness, but not despair or hopelessness. i think what most appeals to me about an ambiguous ending is that lingering feeling of hope. it’s not the same as the kind you get from a happily-ever-after, and something about it speaks to me.

💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing?

honestly? how to take criticism. i took a creative writing class in high school where we had to read our work out loud and then receive feedback on it from the other writers in the class, and that did a lot for me. going into that class, i’d already been writing for forever and had won some little local writing contests and such, so i was a wee bit of a pretentious douche. but i’d never gotten real critique before beyond, essentially, spelling and grammar checks. it humbled me lol. it made me grow so much as a writer, and i could see where i needed to improve or where my head was wedged way too far up my own ass for others to follow. it also helped me recognize strengths i didn’t know i had, and that was huge. it’s easy to get into a self-doubt spiral when making creative work, and good, constructive criticism can do so much to help avoid that.

to this day i love critique. i like knowing what worked or didn’t work so that i can continue to improve as a writer and do better next time. did my themes land? did something really work, but another part fall flat? i’d love to know!! i try to treat everything i write as practice for the next thing, and frankly that’s helped take some of the pressure off so i don’t go into total Perfectionist Mode.

i know critique is kind of a sensitive topic in fan spaces, but i think that’s because a lot of people have gotten unsolicited criticism that is purely critical and isn’t constructive. but getting good, constructive criticism will do so much to help a person grow as a writer. it’s scary, and sometimes it hurts! writing is very personal for most people, and it stings when things aren’t received the way you think they will be. but i know i’ve grown more from having my failures pointed out (and, very importantly, having the good things about those efforts acknowledged) than anything else.

hello (i am the cursive anon) but have since left the anon because WOW i truly didn't expect you to make a comic out of my silly rambling so i just have to THANK YOU for your drawing. also, mechanical pencils are better than traditional pencils. however, the one problem that i have with them is that the lead can break pretty easily which is highly annoyingly as someone who both writes fast and hard. random but have you tried calligraphy? it's super relaxing even if you don't have the best handwriting 10/10 recommend

oh and another wacky idea, i think that edelgard might have a special wax seal reserved just for byleth (color would be either blue or red with gold) and with an extremely fancy E

100% agreed on the lead issue too 😤😤😤😤 it’s very annoying. i like having nice thin lines for traditional drawing/sketching though, and battling a pencil sharpener all day to maintain that crispness just ain’t worth the struggle lol.

i haven’t tried calligraphy but i’d really like to!! i get so envious of people who can bust out swoopy, swirly, pretty letters so gracefully. whenever a calligraphy video comes across my dash i’m Fixated 🤤 it’s so cool. i’ll have to make an attempt at it eventually.

also agreed on edelgard’s fancy wax seals. she definitely started doing it at hubert’s insistence (he was really sick of trying to figure out which pieces of edelgard and byleth’s correspondence were personal or business-related). i love big fancy “e,” though i could also see her agonizing over getting exactly the right design or symbol to use on the seal as to represent her feelings for byleth. girl loves her symbolism.

byleth: it’s… a bird… dragon? wolf?

edelgard: [launches into a twenty-minute long diatribe about the eagle’s significance to the hresvelg family, why she chose a wolf for byleth, and how the symbol represents their unity]

byleth: it’s, um. it’s very cool, el.

🌻 How often do you read your own fics?

uh well immediately after i post a fic, i re-read it like three times because, inevitably, i will find a zillion mistakes i somehow missed in my previous fifty rounds of editing. then i will be unable to look at the piece for a month or two. after that i’ll remember it exists and do another round of edits. usually this is the most extensive edit as i’ve had enough time away from the work to realize where and how i was talking out my ass. sorry to anyone who reads my stuff before this happens lmaoooo i hope it’s stomachable!!

after that, i can (usually) bear to look at the fic again and i’ll remember i wrote it for me and that’s why it contains all kinds of stuff i like lol. i’ll re-read and do nitpicky edits maybe once a month or so. more if i’m proud of it.

💡How many WIPs do you currently have?

ummmmm. let’s see. in no particular order, i’ve got a good chunk of progress goin’ on these right now:

the victors; the vestiges. chapter four is so close to being done but i have to keep touching it and touching it.

recognition chapter 3. this chapter is technically smut, but rather unsexy smut. twin character studies in a smut wrapper. apologies to anyone who’s subscribed to that as i have no idea if i’ll ever be brave enough to publish it.

yet-untitled edeleth smut that is purely about sex for sex’s sake. i’m having too much fun with this one

very angsty fic about byleth’s first days in enbarr

morrowind reincarnation-slash-modern au

a way too ambitious nerevoryn fic i’ll don’t think i will ever finish

that casphardt fic i promised you ten thousand years ago OOPS!!!!!

i’m also dreaming about doing a political drama set in fhirdiad just after the war but i’m not sure if i have the brain or historical chops to pull it off. maybe someday.

💌 Is there a favorite trope you like to write?

hmmm. i don’t think so? i really enjoy writing and exploring established relationships, but i wouldn’t say it’s necessarily my favorite as i enjoy writing non-romantic stuff, too. thematically, my favorite thing to write about is devotion. i’m pretty much always writing about devotion or grief (usually both).

On fountain pens and cursive:

Fountain pens slap. However, I dislike pencil strongly but also make too many mistakes for pen, so I am locked into erasable inks only. So it’s gel pens for me forever I guess! I write in either print or cursive depending, but I find most people my age or younger (I’m in my early 20s) just can’t read cursive. Hilariously, this means I do most of my writing printed but I write poetry and rants and journal entries in cursive.

I also use cursive to take meeting minutes when the meeting people are older than me because there’s like a 50/50 chance it impresses them lol.

i’m a mechanical pencil guy on the rare occasions where i’m 1. handwriting and 2. Not writing in pen. but i always respect the og #2. i’m just a little neurotic about keeping a pencil perfectly sharp and a mechanical one solves that problem lol.

tbh using cursive Tactically is a big brain move and i respect that immensely. i’ve drawn comics for a long time and before i picked up fountain pens, said comics were the only reason i remembered how to write in cursive lol. it’s kind of a shame that more people can’t read it these days but hey, if it makes it a makeshift form of code, that’s pretty neat 😈

🦈 Which character is the toughest to write?

i’m lucky in that most characters flow pretty easily for me, but i’ve struggled the most with writing ferdinand and bernadetta.

ferdinand’s voice is more challenging to execute than i ever anticipate it will be. i barely featured him in chapter 1 of muscle memory, but it was enough to stress me out. he has this particular tone i can’t seem to nail—he’s overly confident and sunny in a way that can come off as oafish, but that oafishness is usually hiding a clever and thoughtful truth.

in general, i like bernie, but she’s not my favorite lmao. pre-timeskip, i find her to be so tough to write as she spirals for nothing and can easily take control of a scene. it’s hard to keep her on task, and i worry about her coming off cringey. i’ve only made an attempt at writing her in echoes of zanado and i’m not sure i’ll do it again, though i’ll definitely give post-timeskip bernie a chance to shine at some point. gotta reward her for all that growth.

i’ve also taken a few stabs at writing locked tomb fics, but i simply cannot get harrowhark’s voice quite right, so those have yet to see the light of day. alas. maybe i’ll finish one eventually!

❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?

hmmmmm. i don’t feel like i’m particularly skilled at crafting one-liners that stand out or are all that witty. i tend to either be partial to parts of sentences or entire passages that flow well. for whatever reason, i was pleased with the line in muscle memory chapter 2 about kissing the “soft plateau below her navel” even though it’s just describing a tummy lol. the words feel nice together.

i’m gonna cheat and throw a few out here. edelgard’s rant about the cats’ names in her majesty’s favored felines was so fun to write and still cracks me up. she’s so high-drama smdh. love her. there’s also a really stupid sex joke early in that story that’s not even a joke, per se, but also makes me laugh.

i think like you mean it contains some of my most primo navel-gazing angst, and i’m especially fond of the very last paragraph:

She held her like she was the other end of the tether, like she was the only thing keeping her here, like holding her could save her, could give her purpose, could make her worthy, like the heat-on-heat of their intertwined bodies could make meaning of all the things that didn’t make sense in this world. She closed her eyes, and held her, and begged the favor of an absent god, praying that she—that this—could be enough.

i also like this line from chapter eight of at the edge of the void:

And even without her love, he would still choose to make himself a planet and remain in her orbit, knowing full well he would be eventually swallowed by the gravity of a dying sun.

unfortunately, my neuroticism doesn’t let me like it that much because i’ve not put enough thought into whether anyone in fódlan, especially edelgard, has a concept of what gravity is or that suns (plural) can die. i won’t let me have any fun.

oh gosh. this is a lot of power to have and i have too many ideas. it’s hot on my mind because of the vickyvesties, but i freaking hate how almyra is treated in canon. fódlan is atrocious with any and all foreign policy but sweet sothis are they dicks about almyra.

i also would have loved more screen time for our agarthan pals. i really, extremely do not fuck with clowns, but i still wish we could have gotten more depth from kronya, who was just on the cusp of being really interesting.

i realize i’ve cheated and said more than one thing but whatever i’ve got one more: all of azure moon should be placed in the circular filing cabinet, but especially rodrigue’s death scene. insane to have felix’s dad’s death be entirely about dimitri when felix is standing right there. triple insane to have it happen at all when byleth could just fucking rewind it!!! hello! did you forget you have time powers??? wake up girl!!!! we got an explanation for why she couldn’t undo jeralt’s death, but they don’t even hand-wave away rodrigue’s. byleth just accepts that he’s gotta go. what a joke!!

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

morrowind is yuri and i made a 3.5 hour long powerpoint presentation to defend that stance.

for fe3h, i don’t think my headcanons are too wild for the most part, but i subscribe to the theory that sothis’s dragon form is um. really big. like, say, yea big:

my hottest take? the agarthans were kind of right. unfortunately they were too stupid and evil to make anything of being right.

💘 Is it easier for you to write angst or fluff?

oh, angst. absolutely angst. when the mood strikes and i get the right idea, i can crank out a fluff fic pretty fast, but if i set out to write fluff, i could wind up sitting around for hours trying to come up with something. i’m a lot better at plugging away at angst.

my fluff fics are also prone to taking sudden turns into angst if i don’t keep a close eye on the flow of the conversation. the beginning of chapter 3 of the vesties is supposed to be very light-hearted and sweet, but it was an ordeal keeping byleth from souring it all. she’s so emo in that story and it’s terrifically hard to make her have any fun. i had to scrap six or seven paragraphs and rework them completely because she bummed claude out so badly at his freaking new year’s party, and that simply would not do.
