"Уастырджи уе 'мбал"

Today in my homeland of North Ossetia marks the beginning of Dzhiorguba - a week long celebration in honor of Uastyrdzhi, a heavenly patron of wayfarers, warriors and men in general. His true origins are shrowded in mystery but some theories connect him to St George.

This decorated belt buckle, fittings and strap end come from an Alan catacomb in North Ossetia. During the 6th and 9th centuries this area was part of Khazar Khaganate, a large commercial empire that used to cover modern day Ukraine, Kazakhstan and parts of Russia. The Alans regularly migrated through their lands until the Khazars drove most of them to the mountains. These Alans were the ancestors of the modern day Ossetians.

Today is my birthday, and I can think of no better birthday present than Qazt: Ossetian Urban Rituals in Vladikavkaz, a 46-minute documentary film released earlier today by Tbilisi-based Ored Recordings, whose remit is “traditional and local music from the Caucasus and beyond.” The film comes hot on the heels of Ored’s release of the eponymous album a week ago. Nothing would make me happier today…
