The other week, during one of my Empowering Dietitians Group Supervision Mastermind calls, I reminded the group that we are not to blame for our feelings of imposter phenomenon, perfectionism, or burnout. We were taught to be high achievers. Our perfectionism was reinforced -- by capitalism, by competitive dietetic internships, by standards of strangers critiquing what a model dietitian should look and act like. So we internalize it. Our type A perfectionism rises to the occasion and we say yes to everything. We pile our plates high with projects and client case loads and side hustles and endless responsibilities. Pause. Just because we internalized a message from our overworked, obsessed with the bottom line patriarchy and the equally demanding professional dietetics culture that resulted from it, does not mean we need to keep feeding into it. Where my tofu lovers at? 👋🏼 ⠀ ⠀ Despite what you might've heard, there's no reason to fear this little legume.⠀ ⠀ MYTH 1: Soy causes breast cancer. ⠀ ⠀ REALITY: Eating 1-2 servings of soy has a neutral or beneficial effect for most women. Tofu, tempeh, and miso are safe to eat even after a breast cancer diagnosis—hormone-sensitive cancers included. (Yup!)⠀ ⠀ I wrote a blog post a couple years back that breaks down this and more of the myths (+ research) on soybeans. Go to the link in my bio to give it a read, and then come back to try this delicious recipe. It's quick, crispy, and so, so good on top of your springtime asparagus haul!⠀ ⠀ What's your favorite way to eat tofu?⠀ ⠀ SESAME CRUSTED TOFU⠀ ⠀ Ingredients:⠀ 1 block pressed extra-firm tofu, chopped into cubes⠀ 1 tablespoon sesame oil⠀ 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (black and white)⠀ 1 tablespoon rice vinegar⠀ 2 teaspoons tamari (or soy sauce)⠀ 1 teaspoon honey ⠀ 1 tablespoon cornstarch (or arrowroot powder)⠀ ⠀ Instructions:⠀ Combine tofu, sesame oil, sesame seeds, vinegar, tamari (or soy sauce), honey, and cornstarch (or arrowroot powder), and stir until tofu is coated. Spread tofu in a single layer on a hot, greased skillet over medium heat. Cook 7-9 minutes, or until the bottom of the tofu begins to separate from the pan and turns golden brown. Flip and cook 5-7 additional minutes, or until tofu is golden brown on all sides. It, like all diets, puts all the responsibility on the person who is following whatever "guidelines" are involved and then all of the blame on said person who stops following it because it's likely too restrictive/rigid....ergo, it's not a lifestyle. #heresyoursign You might not be making a maintainable lifestyle change if: - you can't eat as much as your body is hungry for - you can't eat the foods you're hungry for - you have to eat/stop eating at certain times - you have "cheat days" - you have to avoid certain foods (and not due to allergies) - you can have certain foods only after a period of avoiding or after "earning" it - you have to move your body for a designated amount of time or particular way - you're unable to enjoy meals with others because of the restrictions you're following - you find yourself eating the same foods over and over due to limited choices that are "approved" This is by no means a fully inclusive list but hopefully provides some ways to notice diet culture #youmightbeonadietif #zerochanceitsntadiet #nondietapproach #nondietdietitian #haesdietitian #dietsdontwork #EDRD #intuitiveeating https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt85VK-lPl6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=aduk8eqvokqk

You know at the end of Cinderella when the step sisters are trying to cram their feet into her glass slipper??? 👠 Well, they didn't fool anyone. They got it to look like they had their feet in the shoe, but upon further inspection they only got it on their toes, and their heels were hanging out the back. . That glass slipper is just like the social ideal @jessihaggertyrd is talking about. Just as the step sisters wouldn't have been able to walk around or do anything productive in an ill-fitting slipper, we are unable to experience body acceptance or trust when we're constantly trying to force our bodies into some fabrication of diet culture. . We weren't designed faulty so that we would have to try all our lives to fit into society's one diet-culture-approved mold.
