OFMD Observations - Growth Through Storms

SO I haven't watched yet (waiting for my cousin so we can have a watch party), but I do want to point something out regardless based on all of the stuff I've seen online. And some of the comments rightfully point out how absolutely unhinged Edward has become.

What I don't understand are the comments that question why he would ever hurt Izzy.

Because here's the thing...

I need everyone to remember that Izzy wanted Ed to become Blackbeard.

At the end of season 1, Ed was grieving, but he was able to at least begin processing feelings. He might have even been able to live a stable life until Stede found them again.

But Izzy pushed him over the brink. Because Izzy had fallen in love with Blackbeard, not Ed. And he felt as though Stede had taken Blackbeard from him. So he wanted to take Ed from Stede.

And he did.

At least for a little while.

What we're going to be seeing, most likely, is Izzy's reluctant realization that he's been worshiping a character. That it isn't worth losing pieces of himself (literally) to a love that can never be real because it's completely based in the fictions others (including himself) created.

That the person he wanted Ed to become would actually destroy them all.

These character arcs are just so incredibly beautiful and complex, because they all rely on the growth of one another, but also of the growth that they do themselves.

We have Izzy, who needs to learn how to love himself first, but also needs to relearn who his friend and former captain is behind the fiction.

We have Ed, who needs to shed the expectations, the grief, the hatred, the anger, and learn how to be Edward for the first time, even when life gets difficult, even when he's stepping into a storm.

We have Stede, who needs to grow into a love that isn't selfish, isn't waiting for him. Who needs to be able to apologize. Who needs to learn that he can't just leave or fix his mistakes by staying, but by fighting for others.

And we even have Lucius. Who's traumatized by what happened to him. But can only grow by relearning who Ed is. By conquering fears of friendships and relationships that hurt him and stepping forward into new ones.

For those who are saying they hate certain characters, that's fine. You're more than allowed to!

But I just encourage everyone to remember that these people are learning how to be human for the first time. They're shattering through the fictions others have fabricated for them, that they themselves believed, and are allowing themselves to feel everything, good and bad, in order to grow through the cracks. You can't do that without cutting yourself, no matter how carefully you may step through the shards.

And that's fucking beautiful.
