Shana Cleveland Live Show Review: 4/27, Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago

Thursday night at Old Town School of Folk Music, Shana Cleveland and her band brought Manzanita (Hardly Art) to life. As promised, Luke Bergman and Will Sprott’s respective pedal steel and synth playing provided a “thick eeriness.” They contrasted the tactility of Cleveland’s plucked guitars, whether Cleveland’s picking was by itself introducing a song or playing an interlude, or hovering atop the textural, foggy hum of the backing band. Drummer Geneva Harrison provided thumping fills on “Faces in the Firelight”, pounding might on “Walking Trough Morning Dew”, and subtle brushwork almost everywhere. Her shaking percussion on songs like “Mystic Mine” emulated the creepy naturalism that inspires so much of Manzanita. At the center and barely in front was Cleveland’s effortless voice, sandwiched in timbre among the instruments, telling the stories that contextualize the songs’ instrumental vignettes.

Though the lines between La Luz and Cleveland’s solo work are, according to Cleveland herself, certainly blurring a bit, she has very much refined a solo artistic voice. A song such as Night of the Worm Moon’s country ballad “I’ll Never Know” was purportedly originally written for La Luz but “didn’t make sense” for the band; you can hear its siblings in the “Paint It Black” guitars of “Night of the Worm Moon” and Spaghetti Western aesthetic of “Face of the Sun”. Manzanita’s songs have doubled down on Cleveland’s pseudo cinematic vibe, from the whistling pedal steel of “Mystic Mine” to Richard Brautigan tribute “Mayonnaise”. When performing the latter, as she sang the line, “I’ll write a thousand songs before I’m done,” Cleveland mimicked a slit throat, the type of darkly humorous and strange mood that oozes from Manzanita just as much as the instruments themselves. If those thousand songs continue to reflect Cleveland’s ever-shifting perspectives and sense of self, we’re in for a treat, sonic and literary.

Also, totally not me grieving, but what if Ruin fucked up and just managed to turn several trillion people and animatronics into cats instead of collapsing their dimensions.

So, then, after Solar 'dies' Moon is just standing screaming meanwhile newly kitten Solar is pressing his face against Moons legs in confusion because he's tiny and cold on the floor and doesn't know how to move besides wriggling like a worm.

So i was inspired by a whacky dream the other night and decided to add an alternate version of ‘Servant Sun’ from the shows episode where evil Eclipse won to my lil SAMS au!

So this variant of ‘Sun’ is a anthro sunflower called Sol who was owned by some bad people who would harvest his body parts to sell on black markets for medical uses (this is why he’s missing the petals on one side of his head in a couple of the scenes. Being a plant, he is able to regrow them though hence the scars)

He escapes one day but has a bounty robot sent after him to bring him back, and he soon runs into Eclipse in an alleyway (he was there for other business reasons) who he begs for help from.

Eclipse recognising the familiar situation, would kill the bounty robot and take the traumatised flower home, where he would introduce him to Lunar and then give them a shower like one would a stray kitten because he’s a lil grubby lad.

(Quick side note: At this point in the AU, Eclipse and Lunar would have found a stable home to live in so they wouldn’t have to worry about travelling with the new addition to the family)

Also shoutout to @sinistershepherd @bitterkarmaa for part of the inspiration behind this sad lil sunflower with their own version of the servant sun they named Rays (who is an adorable sad lad and i adore him)

finished this a while ago ..... forgot about it ... did a couple edits today . here u go.

formally introducing my "y/n"; worms! or dewdrop, if you prefer. and their mini music man friend, dingy. pardon how it's drawn, im still not the best w djmm/mini music men.

stupid lil information dump and two other versions of the image (flat color and one with extra writing on it) under the cut

worms is the only human nightshift janitor at the pizzaplex, and later on instated into a parts and service position as well (without warning from fazco, they kinda just ...... did it for them). the fazwrench is it's mortal enemy. it does have a bag, dingy rides in it sometimes and its where they normally keep their fazwrench, but i didnt feel like drawing it here 🤍 worms does the jobs that staffbots cant do; which actually turns out to be quite a few things. however, luckily there are two zones that they dont need to clean; the arcade area, and the daycare. according to fazco, djmm and the staff bots got the arcaded covered, and the daycare attendants are fully self cleaning. theyre not allowed to interact or talk with any animatronics more than necessary, whch just includes asking the glams to leave their rooms so they can be cleaned and nothing more, which shouldnt be a problem, right?

and heres . a very small chunk of an embarrassingly long infodump on discord </3 for some more info about them. this is like. not even a fraction of the horribly long tangent i went on </3 (they r referred to as dewdrop in these messages)
