Repost @maripari9 “En Función del Interes Nacional” (In Function of National Interest) made in collaboration with @vasquezlaroche is a series of six screen printed light boxes.

These two are currently up on view at @cueart until September 2nd! The screen-printed surfaces depict iconic logos from Venezuelan companies that were expropriated during the regime of the former president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez and current President Nicolas Maduro.

Through the works, we consider the way that products and their branding are an integral part of national identity as it has been built over the past few decades. Through the use of cardboard, we make reference to the distribution of products, particularly to the way many of these Venezuelan goods are no longer made in Venezuela and many Venezuelans travel to other countries to find traditionally Venezuelan products. On top of the screen printed logos are laser cutouts of images of Simon Bolivar, known as the liberator.

The images are taken from Venezuelan currency called the Bolívar which has reached record-breaking high levels of inflation. Seen as a series, racialized differences in the representations of Simon Bolivar become apparent. His image and association with liberty are used as a political tool for garnering support.

Multimedia components including LED taxi/rideshare lights reading “libre” (free), can be seen through the cutouts in the cardboard. Through their various layers, the works draw connections between the use of the notion of liberty as a political tool from the colonial times of Simon Bolivar all the way to contemporary times of globalized neoliberal markets and economies. They ask audiences to consider the meaning of and access to liberty and authoritarianism across political spectrums.

Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti as Venus

The painting Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti as Venus, made byNoel-Nicolas Coypel, is an oil on canvas that is 54.3 by 42 inches big and currently featured at the Ringling Museum of Arts. Coypel’s painting is a portrait of Elisabeth de Bourbon, Princess of Conti, who was quite beautiful and a subject of much attraction, as clearly depicted. The painting has the allure of a bright dream-like outside scenery alongside flowers and flowing silks that quickly catch people’s attention. There is a trend of light pastel colors such as light pink and white garments, a baby blue sky, and pale colors that highlight the pampered life of French court. Baby cupids also adorn Princess Elisabeth with pretty flowers, which remind the audience of her youth and charismatic charm. Coypel and Elisabeth clearly worked on creating her public image to feature this delicacy and goddess of love illusion through the balance of colors, dimensions, and rococo fragility. Being a fan of the Rococo style drew me into this painting, and while deeply inspecting it, I was reminded of feelings of love, attraction, and even womanhood because of the delicacy and love illusion imbedded within the oils, which I believe is exactly what Elisabeth and Coypel intended the audience to feel.

The Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti is associated with the Rococo art style and was painted during the Enlightenment (18th century). Although the Enlightenments focused on scientific learning and philosophical ideas of life, liberty, and separation of church and power, there was a popular appeal with elite members communicating their wealth through rococo- styled art, interior design, architecture, and more (2.1 Shifting Sensibilities: The Enlightenment and Rococo, ART 188). Princess Elisabeth, being an enlightenment follower herself, illustrated this dramatic shift from the previous baroque style into the lively rococo style when depicting herself. She and Coypel worked on illustrating her image far away from the remote, aloof, and formal style into this delicacy, lighthearted elegance conveyed through light and pastel colors (portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti). Understanding the imagery and alluring beauty of this painting tells the audience that Coypel enjoyed painting natural beauty and depicting love and its allure through lightness and asymmetrical pose. Ringling described it as “This Rococo pose reminds us of the change and fragility that love encounters” (portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti). The message of great shift and nature beauty found with youth and bright accent is illustrated throughout the painting for the audience to see, as is the image of Elisabeth as a playful and charming goddess. There are also references to how the elite's pampered life and wealth through luscious silks and pearls. There are many references and illustrations to convey the message clearly.

Overall, I think the importance of this art is to bring a different perspective to a changing society. I think it creates this idealized perspective of wealth, love, and beauty. There is something about its specific naturalistic complexity, such as the princesses’ beauty compared to previous works of art, that makes it attractive; however, there’s also referenced to love with baby cupids and imaginary figures. I believe this painting was made to catch the audience’s attention to this dream-like scenery and entice us with beauty while reminding us of love. As a woman, I particularly felt drawn to its beauty.

Colombian leader's son says drug money entered father's campaign

Petro, at age 37 the eldest of the leftist president's children, was arrested Saturday and denied the charges in a hearing Wednesday.

BOGOTA: Nicolas Petro, son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, told prosecutors that money from a drug cartel filtered into the campaign of his father last year, a confession aimed at mitigating his own exposure to money-laundering charges.

Nicolas Petro “received large sums of money from Mr. Samuel Santander Lopesierra, known as The Marlboro Man,” prosecutor Mario Burgos said during a hearing Thursday.

“Some of the money was used by Mr. Nicolas Fernando Petro himself… and the other part went into the 2022 presidential campaign,” Burgos said.

Petro, at age 37 the eldest of the leftist president’s children, was arrested Saturday and denied the charges in a hearing Wednesday.

But he changed his tune a day later when he announced his aim “to initiate a process of collaboration.”

“I will refer to new facts and situations that will help justice,” Nicolas Petro said.

Local press reports said the younger Petro learned of new evidence held by prosecutors, and that Burgos offered to reduce his potential time in prison by half if he collaborated.

President Petro said Saturday he recognized the independence of the judiciary in charging his son, indicating Nicolas Petro would have to face the consequences.

Speaking on Thursday to poor farmers in Sucre department in the north, Petro denied that he had been in league with his son to bring dirty money to his campaign.

“What will never happen… is that it is said that the current president… has even suggested or become an accomplice of one of his sons or daughters to commit a crime, because that has not happened,” he said. “If that were true, this president would have to leave today.”

The charges against the younger Petro are for “acquiring, investing… covering up and giving the appearance of legality” to money obtained irregularly, in addition to seeing an unjustified increase in his net worth.

After Nicolas Petro had an alleged affair, his ex-wife, Daysuris Vasquez, accused him of siphoning off money intended for his father’s 2022 campaign, using it to live the high life in Barranquilla, a northern port.

The younger Petro was a legislator from the surrounding Atlantico department, and helped his father gain support in the Caribbean region, historically opposed to leftist politicians.

Burgos said Nicolas Petro received some 400 million pesos (about US$102,000) from Lopesierra, a former Colombian senator who later served a US prison term for cocaine trafficking.

Lopesierra got the moniker The Marlboro Man for importing cigarettes, some of it said to be contraband, through Colombia’s remote La Guajira Peninsula on the Caribbean coast.

In 2006, a US jury convicted him of smuggling two tons of cocaine into the country, and laundering millions of dollars. He was sentenced to a 25-year prison term, but went free after 18 years.

Burgos said Nicolas Petro may have received a similar quantity of money from Alfonso “The Turk” Hilsaca, a businessman who has been implicated in financing right-wing paramilitary groups.
