[5/7] Relationships: Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna
On her wedding night, before going to bed, Alexandra wrote in her husband’s diary: “At last united, bound for life, and when this life is ended, we meet again in the other world and remain together for eternity. Yours, yours” (Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie).
My dream is some day to marry Alix H. I have loved her a long while and still deeper and stronger since 1889 when she spent six weeks in St. Petersburg. For a long time, I resisted my feeling that my dearest dream will come true (Nicholas II’s 1892 diary entry).
The marriage that began that night remained unflawed for the rest of their lives. It was a Victorian marriage, outwardly serene and proper, but based on intensely passionate physical love.
To Alexandra, Nicholas was always “Nicky”. To him, she was “Alix” or “Sunshine” or “Sunny”. Sometimes through the rooms of this private wing, a clear, musical whistle like the warbling song of a bird would sound. This was Nichola’s way of summoning his wife. Early in her marriage, Alexandra, hearing the call, would blush red and drop whatever she was doing to hurry to him. Later, as his children grew up, Nicholas used it to call them, and the birdlike whistle became a familiar and regular sound in the Alexander Palace (Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie).

Nicholas II or Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov (18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918), known in the Russian Orthodox Church as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer, was the last Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his abdication on 15 March 1917. During his reign, Nicholas gave support to the economic and political reforms promoted by his prime ministers, Sergei Witte and Pyotr Stolypin. He advocated modernization based on foreign loans and close ties with France, but resisted giving the new parliament (the Duma) major roles. Ultimately, progress was undermined by Nicholas's commitment to autocratic rule, strong aristocratic opposition and defeats sustained by the Russian military in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. By March 1917, public support for Nicholas had collapsed and he was forced to abdicate the throne, thereby ending the Romanov dynasty's 304-year rule of Russia (1613–1917).

[6/8] Moments: The execution of Russia’s last imperial family (July 17, 1918)
[...] in the early hours of the morning of Wednesday 17 July, they [the Romanovs] were unexpectedly awoken by their captors and ordered to dress (The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra by Helen Rappaport).
In their bedroom, the girls carefully slipped into their jewel-lined camisoles, making sure every tiny eye hook was securely fastened before donning their plain white blouses and black skirts. Alexei, too, put on an undershirt concealing gems, while Alexandra tied a cloth belt containing several rows of large pearls around her waist (The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia by Candace Fleming).
[The family was] Told that they were being moved downstairs for their safety from unrest and artillery fire in the city, they complied without question. In an orderly line Nicholas, Alexandra and their five children, Dr. Botkin and their three loyal servants Demidova, Trupp and Kharitonov, walked quietly down the wooden stairs from their apartments, across the courtyard and into a digny basement room. As they went, there were ‘no tears, no sobs and no questions’ (The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra by Helen Rappaport).
Yurovsky began reading from the paper: “In light of the fact that your relatives in Europe [are] continuing their aggression against Soviet Russia [it] has been declared that [you are] to be shot”. “Lord, oh my God!” stammered Nicholas. He turned to his family. [...] “I can’t understand you”, said Nicholas. “Read it again, please”. Yurovsky did. “What?” Nicholas cried again. “What?” (The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia by Candace Fleming).

At just 13 years old Alexei Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II’s son, was killed. The whole entire family was. Alexei was a mischievous boy, but he also suffered from hemophilia which limited a lot of thins in life for him.
Hemophilia or “the royal’s disease” effects inbred males. It’s usually passed on from inbred women however. It is a very terrible disease, it weakens the immune system and makes healing from injuries way more difficult. Alexei, being the mischievous boy he was, used to get injured way more than he should have.
It was recorded just after birth he began bleeding from the umbilical cord in a large amount. His parents chose to keep his condition a secret from the public. His life was almost lost multiple times, and when he danced with death it was always awful.
There’s a few stories of Alexei playing pranks or mischief. One for example took place at a dinner party. Alexei was under the table and removed a woman’s shoe and showed it to his father. His father told him to put it back, and Alexei did. But before he did he put a ripe strawberry into the toe of the shoe.
Another story was of him waking up crew members on a naval boat so he could play games with them. Instead of Nicholas scolding him, he laughed and said ”That’s the way to bring up an autocrat!” His father joked, calling him “Alexei the terrible”.
He was loved dearly by his parents, especially his father. Whether that be because he was the youngest or the only son I’m not sure of. He had a good friendship with his sisters as well. Growing up he became more shy and more aware of his disease. He looked like his mother, and had his father’s shyness.
(Just thought I’d share some Alexei facts)
