I find it both kinda sad in a weird bittersweet way that Dekomori and Nibutani's relationship is built on a disagreement about Nibu's past.

Nibu's whole thing is that Mori Summer doesn't exist, never did exist, and that Deko should just forget about her. Of course, this doesn't really take into account that, no, Mori Summer did exist... sorta--Nibu certainly played that role in the past at least. And in playing that role, she'd made an impact on people's lives. Deko in particular seems to derive a lot of joy from Mori Summer's message of love and clearly considers Mori Summer important to her. And of course Nibu stance on the matter places herself in direct opposition to Mori Summer.

And therein lies the crux of the matter: Nibutani and Mori Summer are, for all that Nibu denies it, the same person.

Nibutani never stopped believing in what Mori Summer believes in--not really. She still believes in spirituality and powers beyond human means. Fortune telling, fungshui, the power of love? She's quite the romantic, of course she still believes in all that.

And Dekomori's way too smart not to pick up on that.

Like, sure, Deko plays the immature idiot most of the time, but of all the characters, she's probably the most emotionally mature out of all of them. She understands that she's part of a dumbass fantasy LARP group. It's a hobby. It's a normal activity that people can find fun. It's a thing Nibutani finds fun even when she acts like she doesn't. Deko very well could just let go of all the play acting/fighting and it wouldn't affect the rest of her life at all, but she doesn't because she finds it fun.

Which is why Nibutani infuriates her. It infuriates her the same way Yuuta's dismissal of Rikka's fantasies despite him also finding it cool infuriates her. Here was some smarmy two-face of a girl who used to be important to her saying that all the fun they used to have and are still having was and is meaningless. No, they most certainly are not, and she would prove it.

So they fought.

They fought for months and months and neither were really willing to budge. It was futile, they knew, but they kept fighting anyway. Eventually that just became what their relationship was like. And in a way, it became comforting for them. It was familiar and consistent. They knew exactly what would happen when they interacted. They have no intention of changing it.

What makes this so bittersweet is the fact that, despite the two of them fighting so much, it's clear that the two of them do grow to care for each other. But with their relationship built on a disagreement, on so much stubbornness and habitual antagonism, there isn't really a way for them to develop their relationship into something healthier without one of them yielding. And neither are going to yield.
