Hi! I'm new to Spuffy and I was wondering, are there any "big" fics that you would recommend? Like the fics that most people have read/heard about, if that makes sense lol😅
Hi, anon!
Well, I only started reading Spuffy fanfic a couple of years ago, so maybe I don't consider the same fics as classics as most people do, hope my recommendations will work for you anyway (:
*if you're looking for more Spuffy stories, check out my ficrec tag!
These are my top 5 favourite OLD fics:
Found by CupcakeCute [PG-13]
Begins between TGIQ and Power Play, continues post-NFA. Buffy learns of Spike's resurrection from an unlikely source and immediately sets out to make things right as The Apocalypse breaks out in L.A. Spike/Buffy pairing, some Angel/Cordelia.
My Life Closed Twice by anaross [R]
Post-Not Fade Away. Buffy seeks Spike's remains, but then finds him in the most unusal place.
The Other Side of Midnight by Holly [NC-17]
In the months following the destruction of Sunnydale, Buffy cuts herself off from her friends and resumes life the only way she knows how: fighting evil. It’s only a matter of time before her past catches up with her, and brings about the man she lost and loved too late…only he doesn’t recognize her face.
Promise of Frost by Eurydice [NC-17]
When a snowstorm strands Buffy and Spike, they are forced to turn to each other for strength, especially when a missing Giles, mysterious visitors, and way too much magic threatens to turn it into a not so very merry Christmas. Set mid-S4.
The Writing on the Wall by Holly [NC-17]
There was no body to bury. There was no funeral. There was nothing but the three rules and the knowledge that a thousand years of torment was nothing compared to a world without her in it. Spike embarks on a journey through the Gates of Hell to rescue the one he loves, but in order to save her, he must risk losing himself.
And these are my top 5 favourite LONG fics:
A Different Kind of Hell by OffYourBird [NC-17]
Jumping through Glory's tower portal, Buffy and Spike find themselves in a hell dimension they never expected. One that looks suspiciously like 1880's London. Will they find a way back home? Will the truth behind William the Bloody at last make itself known? Will Buffy ever stop butchering the Queen's English? Join them and find out. Starts off at the end of "The Gift."
The Darkling by OffYourBird [NC-17]
When Buffy’s quest to get Spike returned to her is fulfilled in an unexpected way, she finds herself in a complicated relationship with an intrigued master vampire who isn’t the man she loves, but who might be someday… if she can convince him to step out of the dark.
Hunger by Sunalso [NC-17]
AU. Spike killed his third Slayer, but Dru was already dust. He's been lost, but when his supper turns out to be more than he bargained for, it leaves him hungry for something else instead. And Buffy? She's just hungry.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Sunalso [Adult Only]
Buffy has fallen into darkness and been forced to become a ghost in her own past. Only she didn't come back alone. What will it take to overcome depression, obsession, and death so that she can learn to live, love, and laugh again.
West of the Moon, East of the Sun by KnifeEdge [NC-17]
I keep having the strangest dream. Every night it's the same thing: a dark room, a big bed, and a silent vampire that I can feel, but not see. I'd be wigged, except it's just a dream, right? It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever willingly sleep with a vampire again…

What’s your top 5 worst designed/fatally flawed firearms?
1. J-22
Tumblr media
Made by Jennings, Bryco, Lorcin, Jimenez and a bunch of other “Ring of Fire” cheapo pistol producer I have never seen one of these that did not jam after 2 or 3 shots. They are junk.  My dad has one and he wants to get rid of it. I told him to take it to one of those gun buyback shindigs for a $50 gift card but I couldn’t ethically do that because it would be cheating the gun buyback people.
2. The Sten Sputter Gun
Tumblr media
Invented by a man named William F. York, the Sten Sputter Gun was a short lived attempt in 1982 to circumvent NFA laws. According to ATF definition a machine is a firearm that can fire more than one shot per trigger pull. York was like “ah ha ha!, a gun doesn’t need a trigger! So he modified Sten submachine guns to fire without a trigger. Like most SMG’s they fire from an open bolt. So the user would just release the bolt and it would fire in full auto continuously (an most likely uncontrollably) until the 32 round magazine was empty, which took around a second. The ATF made York cease and desist, and ordered he issue refunds to his clients. This proved moot however because after three years of producing them he didn’t have any buyers.
3. The Canadian Ross rifle
Tumblr media
A straight pull bolt action created to arm the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I the Ross Rifle was one of the worst combat weapons ever devised. Now to get something straight, it was an excellent sporting rifle that had unparalleled accuracy. However it was not a good combat weapon. It was highly susceptible to mud, dust, moisture, and other outside weathering. It was very ammo picky, requiring the highest quality ammo to function properly. Breakdowns were common. There was even a flaw where when cleaning the bolt could be assembled incorrectly, causing it to blow straight back into the forehead of the user when fired. Ian from Forgotten Weapons actually demonstrates this. Demonstration at 13:35
youtube
Due to national pride and hubris the Ross was issued regardless of it’s problems. Many soldiers hid their Ross rifles, preferring to use British Lee Enfields instead and only taking them out when high ranking officers did inspections. Eventually the Ross was replaced with the Lee Enfield.
4. The Breda 30
Tumblr media
This was a light machine gun invented by the Italians and used during World War II. It’s big flaw was that it used a fixed magazine. Not a detachable magazine but a fixed magazine. Loading was done using fragile stripper clips.
Tumblr media
So the gun would fire a burst of 20 rounds and everything would have to stop in order to load it with a stripper clip. US Army tests found that the Breda 30 could put out the same rate of fire as a couple of infantrymen with M1 Garands. The weapon was prone to jamming. It had an internal lubrication system to oil cartridges as they fed into the chamber. Of course this could be counterproductive as the oil would attract dust and dirt, and considering these were deployed in North Africa and East Africa...
5. The Early SA80
Tumblr media
Britain’s first modern bullpup assault rifles, it would also go down in history as a national scandal and embarrassment. As soon as it was adopted in 1985 field tests showed that it had many problems. The British Army and Government addressed these problems by sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting “la la la la la”.
When the SA80 was deployed in the Gulf War in 1991 it was quickly revealed how bad it was. It jammed constantly and soldiers often kept the magazine partially loaded to prevent malfunctions. It was very susceptible to the elements. Parts broke down and were damaged easily. Maintenance was painstaking and laborious. The magazine would fall out of the magazine well on a whim. It’s plastic furnishings would melt in the hot Iraqi sun. It’s parts made a rattling sound that would signal when British forces were approaching.
Hundreds of thousands and SA80′s had to be taken off the line and sent to Heckler & Koch to be “re-manufactured”. Since then a number of new models have been produced and supposedly most design flaws corrected. However it still has a bad reputation, whether deserved or not.

I would love that playlist!!! I'm digging that cover of here comes the sun you posted especially since it's a grey rainy day here and I need some sunshine in my life. I'm glad you're doing better, I spent a great deal of today and yesterday cleaning and crocheting! Tbh based on your head cannons I'm picturing Papa I crocheting with me as I listen to murder podcasts!!! - nfa
Oh my gosh I love listening to Murder podcasts! Although it’s kinda hard watching or listening to anything dark and spooky like I usually do because of this stressful time...And yes!! Papa I knitting and crocheting with you! He doesn’t make anything for himself, he gives them to the ghoul children/kits that need them or to the community bin where we keep hats and gloves for he winter if one should need them!
Also to add to reccomendations, Ghost has a lot of covers! Their albums Popestar and If You Have Ghosts are both cover albums, and there are covers exclusive to vinyl but they are on YouTube! The ones on YouTube are It’s A Sin and Avalanche! I actually own the vinyl that has those
Also I’d reccomend their BBC session videos! They are just a few songs that are performed live so...
Also just look up YouTube videos of Special Ghoul, you won’t be disappointed! Special Ghoul is basically Tobias Forge (the man who plays Papas I-III and Copia) before he finally revealed his identity. Those videos are gems

Spuffy Fic Recs
Am in a streamline-y, KonMari mood, so I decided to pull all my fic recs together into one post. So, forty Spuffy fics that spark joy...
Short(er) Fics
Not My Boyfriend by allmadinhere - Gorgeous, compact nugget of a story concept that ticks along with the perfect blend of tension and humour.
Closer by TheHouseKeeper - Poetic, awkward and beautiful post-NFA reunion story. It's Spuffy all growed up.
The Sharing Game by stuffandnonsense - Our post-series heroes teeter on the precipice between friends and lovers. My favourite kind of fic: rafts of wonderful dialogue with deep, insightful dives into character and relationship history.
Spike's Demon vs. Pants by ChryshCn - A delicious confection of a story - funny, sweet and smutty. Utterly edible. Also, if there exists a more perfect Spuffy fic title, I haven't heard it.
Something New by joycometh - Spike has a post Something Blue ponder. And an erection. A poke at Spike's season four psyche with clever turns of phrase, evocative description and lovely character insight.
Still Point by kalima - My favourite take on the Chosen fade to black scene. Pithy, pointed and properly good.
Ketchup Blood by kalima - Reiterating my point above re the proper goodness of kalima's writing. Divine post-coital chat set in season six. At Denny's.
Encapsulated by BillieLiar - Decidedly yummy take on the forced-to-share-a-hotel-room trope.
Daybreak by Sigyn - Gorgeous bit of writing. Intimate and specific and leaves one wanting to hug Spike until his bones creak.
Awake by betty crachit - Glaringly fab take on Spike (equal parts stoic, stumbling and smarty-pants in the face of adversity) with reams of crunchy, clever language. That the story also has a rock solid plot and a dollop of gorgeous smut is just plain showing off in my opinion.
New Year by Sigyn - A tender little season seven moment that digs into the nuances of Spike's soul. Plus there's cribbage.
Phone Call by anaross - Heart-smoosher of a oneshot that speaks to my nagging suspicion that Buffy would not ever really let herself love Spike.
The Day the World Turning Day-Glo by stuffandnonsense - Spike’s ex-girlfriends have a chat. It’s exactly and entirely as wonderful as it sounds.
6am by acekoomboom - Buffy mourns Spike. Unflinching and punch packing.
In Such a Night by Dactylgirl - Exquisite, aching, body-cinching UST.
Comfort & Joy by Dactylgirl - Yet more exquisite UST (plus bonus lovely Giles and charming Scoobies).
Mr Talky Mouth by kalima - Luscious, lascivious, languid, lubricious—just all the L words really—little oneshot.
Cold by Sigyn - The filthiest, grittiest, prettiest language in Spuffidom.
Gunning for Buffy by the_moonmoth - Season five bite-y perfection.
Black Hole Confessions by OffYourBird - For anyone who watches the morning after scene in Wrecked and habitually hears the mental 'Good God, The Writers Arsed Up The Destroyed House Metaphor' klaxon... this story is the perfect fix-it. Metaphor (and character) done right.
Left for Yesterday by the_moonmoth - This WIP is just a wee, chapter-long nugget of setup but the_moonmoth is so flinging-flanging good that I don't begin to care. Her writing, dialogue and character-work are all shot through with charm, wit and warmth. Oh, and she swears thoroughly, properly and creatively.
You Came Back by FlightsofFancy - This story is just a lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely (repeat ad nauseam) continuation of the Hell's Bells scene. It perfectly captures and builds on the soft (green) glow of the pair in the moment.
Reciprocal by the_moonmoth - Divine smut and such deft timeline-manipulation that builds and maintains tension with fierce precision.
Long(er) Fics
Uncontrollable by sweetprincipale - Spike replaces Riley in the spiritually-compelled-to-boink-room during Where the Wild Things Are. Fuck or Die trope to the nth-iest of delicious nth degrees.
Indigo Overture by Rikki-oko - Beautifully paced and punchy romance with skilfully crafted characters. AH enemies to lovers trope done so, so right!
The Ewer of Enheduanna by the_moonmoth - Entirely different story, but I can echo my praise for Reciprocal - divine smut and such deft timeline-manipulation that builds and maintains tension with fierce precision. Also, it's just sodding wonderful.
Rules of The Road by Gort - Roadtrip-y, slow burn-y, build-of-affection-and-trust WIP. A story that takes the end of season five in a different direction but still feels wholly true to character.
College is Awesome by dampersandspoons - This AH story captures perfectly the clumsy, all-consuming teen desire for sex, connection and acceptance. It's also one of the funniest fics I've ever read. It's also loveable-sexy-nerd-William fic. It's also a rare example of a story in which the male romantic lead is cautious, clever and kind rather than masterful, all knowing and presuming. And, also, the smut is wonderful.
In For a Penny by bewildered and the_moonmoth - Spike time travels back to season four and good lordy does that make me happy. A WIP with lashings of snarky Giles and fabulously put-upon Spike.
Monsters by betty cratchit - A perfect UST-laden season four caper by an author with the most melodious and charming writer's voice ever in ever.  Perma WIP.
Beyond the Pale by FlightsofFancy - The most intriguing Initiative plot I've ever read. Conflict aplenty and top shelf character voices. The fab action sequences are just the icing on this WIP cake.
Books and Their Covers by JustTiff - A delectable AH take on Spike in a story with a beautifully calibrated slow, cinching, flirty build-up.
Ex Magic by bookishy - Deft writing, rock solid character voices, and a season seven plot that just bellows with interesting/clever/smutty potential. It’s the WIP I’m most excited to see continued.
In Heat by Nautibitz - This fic was my intro to both fanfic and smut. Even if it were shite, I'd still be sentimentally attached and rec the stuffing out of it. But it's not shite, not even close; it is, in fact, sublime.
Thursday's Child by Zabjade - Trauma and ensemble-y interaction and gender dynamics and gentle domesticity and high drama and moral complexity and slow build affection. Read it! Read it, I say!
Care by Sigyn - Good god this is a good premise: the Something Blue spell doesn't break and Buffy & Spike marry. What this is not is a breezy story making use of Spuffy's convenient canon engagement to make 'em bone ad infinitum. (Not that there's anything wrong with those stories; I personal eat those stories up with a spoon). But what Sigyn creates here is something more complex, clever and considered. She ducks none of the couple's flaws/impediments/limitations and ultimately she earns the bejesus outta the couple's happy ending.
Ever Sun, Ever Moon by St Ephiny - This WIP is absolutely laced was fraught, palpable tension and it's just heart-thumpingly good. St Ephiny is such a fabulous storyteller—handling character, timelines, dialogue and action with such aplomb—that she's able to push the characters to emotional extremes and still have them feel entirely grounded, believable and true.
My Life Closed Twice by anaross - The most delicious, articulate, nuanced, moral, tough, bitchy, swoon-inducing iteration of Spike in fanfic.
Ketchup and the Crocodile by yellowb - Post resurrection, Buffy runs away to New York. A beautiful, subtle and deliciously genuine story.
Crash and Burn by Nautibitz – AH. Brat meets brat. Fun and funny and fucking hot.

Shoot Report – Barry Cheadles’ 3D course October 2019
Sun through the trees
This was another shoot where I would be behind a camera rather than a bow, but I wanted to get something written and out there as I feel its worth promoting. This isn’t an NFAS club by run Barry Cheadle who does all the course laying and preparation. Situated at Bower Hill, Nr Button Oak its about a 45 minute drive for us, depending on the traffic. In fact it wasn’t the…

Chapter 1
Tumblr media
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Florist Y/n x Bartender Sun, Moon, Lunar, Eclipse and BloodMoon
Fluff
Warning: None
Word counts: 1990
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 17th
Y/n POV:
It was the near beginning of spring. This morning I was driving to my new store that needs to be set up. As I pulled up to my soon to be open store. I park my car as my phone goes off and I pick it up to see who was calling me.
“Great it’s her”
I sighed since it was my mother who was calling me. I never got along with my own mother as she was very strict, pushy and never let me have fun when I was just a kid. My breaking point was when she wouldn’t let me decide my future cause she wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. “Let's get this over with” I grumble to myself as I answer the call to see what my annoying mother wants. “Is there a reason why you are calling me?” I waited to hear what my mother had to say since all I heard on the other side  of the phone were just random noises. After about a minute of quiet, mother  just cussed me out then hung up. "That was something?" Putting my phone away as I got out of the car to go meet the old owner. "There they are, I hope your trip wasn't too terrible was it?" Denise, the old store owner said as she welcomed me inside the empty building. "Other than traffic being a bitch, it wasn't too terrible" I scratched the back of my head as I looked around the empty shop.
"Well I hope you make good use of this place, it would be great to see it be alive again" Denise smiled softly as she handed me the keys to the place. As she was chatting with me, she showed me where my new home will be. "I hope this will be as satisfying as a home and a shop" I smiled softly and nodded my head as I looked around the apartment. It was perfect to me as I can live how I want while I start my dream shop soon. "It's perfect, thank you for letting me have the place as I know it was precious to you" Denise chuckled softly and waved me off as she said that she was more than happy that it was in better hands now.
When Denise left me alone to my new home. I looked outside to see that a mover truck was waiting for me as it was now time to get unpacking. "Alright here to a new start" I said to myself as I headed outside to get help from the movers starting moving in my boxes and furniture.
It took about 20 minutes to have all of my belongings in the apartment once the movers left. Now here was the first day of me getting not only my apartment ready and set but I also have to start working on doing some repaint and design to the shop. I started my apartment first as I didn't have much to do and it was just me living here.
"Let's see, my living room is set, my bedroom is almost done and the kitchen is ready whenever I get hungry" I was nice to have my own place away from my toxic mother. As I carried over my last box to the bedroom. I looked out the window to see that I was next to a bar. "Celestial Light Bar, that is an interesting name for a bar" I chuckled softly as I started unpacking the box that had the rest of my belongings in. After I finished unpacking everything, I went to take a little break and layed in my new bed I bought.
"I'll start working on the shop tomorrow, I'm too tired to work on it today" I closed my eyes and relaxed a bit. I didn't realize that I ended up falling asleep. It was a long day for me because I didn't know that I was this tired.
April 18th
Beep beep beep
Hearing my phone alarm going off. I whine at the loud noise as I turn off the noisy phone. After a moment or two, I opened my eyes to see that I was in my new room. "So it wasn't a dream" I sighed in relief as I sat up and stretched.
As I got up and headed over to my dresser to get some clothes to change into. I jumped when I heard a loud slam open as I looked outside. A guy was thrown out of the bar as I watch to see a red like Moon bot came out of bar and crosses it metal arms. “This is interesting” As I watched what was happening, I could tell that the man must be totally wasted by how he staggered to get up. Soon as the guy started to yell at the animatronic that looks like he doesn’t give a damn.
“Go Home and sober up”
I was slightly surprised by the sound of this animatronic voice. A rough deep voice as it coldly tells the customer to leave was hot in my opinion. The man flipped the bot off as he staggered away while the bot turned around to head inside. Before it moved, my eyes widened as it turned its head towards my direction and looked at me. I held my breath as it stared before giving me a simple smile as it went inside the bar.
“I…okay then?” Shaking my head a bit, I went back over and got dressed as I grabbed the keys. Once that happened, I left my apartment and locked it as I headed to my car to head to the store. “Alright, let go get those paints and brushes as I can get started repainting the store's walls” I said to myself as I started to car and drove to the store.
After some time passed, I got what I needed and headed back to my place. Parking my car, I got out and went to my trunk and opened it to see the two paint cans I bought and a few bags with brushes and other things in it. “Let's get these inside and set up so I can start painting” I grabbed the bags first and hung them in on my arms while I grabbed two paint cans and shut my trunk as I headed over to the door.
As I place the paint cans down. I tried to get my keys to unlock the door but I ended up dropping them. “*Sighs* This is my luck” As I crouch down to pick up my keys. I look to see another animatronic outside of the bar cleaning the windows as if it was like a sun but more of an eclipse look. “Take a picture, it’ll last much longer” The animatronic said as it stopped and looked at me. “Oh i'm sorry, I just happened to look and saw you and was surprised” I said quickly getting up as I fumble around to get the right key to unlock the door quickly. “Sure I’ll believe that” The animatronic chuckled softly as it was about to go back to work but then stopped for a moment. “You're not from around here are you sir/ma’am?” I shook my head as I found the key and unlocked the shop's door.
“I just moved here yesterday” I said to the bot as I gathered the paint can’s and opened the door. Before I headed in, I turned to the animatronic and waved goodbye to them. “Well it’s nice to know you… Eclipse” The animatronic said as I tilted my head in confusion. “Eclipse is my name” Eclipse said as he went back to cleaning the windows. “I see, well I’ll see you around then Eclipse” I said to him as I headed inside the shop and closed the door before I set everything down onto the floor. “Alright time to start painting!”
45 minutes later
“Alright the first coat of paint is now on, got to let it dry before I put on another coat of paint” I sighed softly and went over to crack the door open to let the paint smell out so it can dry quicker. As I took a seat onto the ground and looked around. I started to think about what to do since it was gonna be a bit til the paint dries. “Hmm maybe having a look at the bar next door wouldn’t hurt since I got nothing better to do right now” Getting up and looking at myself to see how bad I need to change. I went up to my apartment and took a quick shower while I got new clothes to wear for the rest of the day.
Once I was ready, I grabbed my keys and headed out the door as I locked it then headed to the bar next door. As I opened the door and walked inside. I was amazed by the celestial theme and how big it was as there were a lot of people here. Looking around while I walked over to the bar, I stopped to not just see one but five different animatronics. Eclipse and the red moon looking one was amongst the five with another sun like animatronic and two moon like ones.
“Sunny, we have another customer!” The light blue moon animatronic said as he looked at me with a cute smile. The sun animatronic looked to see me and smiled as the rays on its head danced around happily. “Your right Lunar, go welcome them!” The Sun animatronic said as the one named Lunar came over to where I was and greeted me with a bright smile.
“Welcome sir/ma’am, we hope you enjoy yourself here at celestial light” Lunar said as he guided me over to the bar where the other four were standing. “I see that we meet again sir/ma’am” Eclipse said with a soft chuckle as the red moon animatronic did the same as the moon and Sun animatronics turned to look at the both of them. “You know them Eclipse” The Moon animatronic said as Eclipse shook his head and turned to look at me. “Their our new neighbor next door” Eclipse said as he got down and pulled something out from the bottom and placed a menu in front of me. “A new neighbor, how exciting to hear!” The Sun animatronic said as he held his hand out to me.
“I’m Sun but you can call me sunny, these four are Eclipse that you met already, Lunar who just greeted you, Moon my twin brother and lastly BloodMoon” Sun introduced me to everyone as we shook hands. “I’m Y/n, I just moved here yesterday” I said smiling softly before I looked at the menu that Eclipse gave me not that long ago. “So you're very much a newbie in this town” Moon said as I nodded my head and looked at each of the animatronics. This was the first time I had an actual full on conversation with live animatronics. “So you're all bartenders huh?” I placed the menu down for now as everyone nodded their heads.
“Very popular ones to say the least” BloodMoon spoke as he leaned against the counter and grinned at me proudly. “I see, so what kind of drinks do y'all make?” I ask them personally even tho I could have looked at the menu. “Well sir/ma’am, each of us have our own theme drinks that are special to just your usual normal every day drink you can think of and more” Sun smirks as he places his elbows on the counter and leans against his hand before giving me a wink.
“Really huh, well then I would like to try on of those special drinks if you don’t mind~”

Spuffy style Reading Challenge - #20: A Fic A Week
So this is gonna be a looong list, be prepared!
A Fic With More Than 200k Words
West of the Moon, East of the Sun by KnifeEdge [NC-17]
I keep having the strangest dream. Every night it's the same thing: a dark room, a big bed, and a silent vampire that I can feel, but not see. I'd be wigged, except it's just a dream, right? It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever willingly sleep with a vampire again...
Fic You Haven’t Read by Author You Love
Seven by Holly [NC-17]
It's been months since Willow almost ended the world, and a tense summer has turned into an ominous fall in Sunnydale. Spike is back from wherever and acting weirder than usual, a new threat is rising that—for once—doesn't seem to stem from the hellmouth, and Buffy has no idea who to trust or what to believe. She also doesn’t have the luxury of time to figure it out. Some things never change.
Popular Fic in 2021:
You Learn by bramcrackers [Adult Only]
When Buffy learns about Angel’s history with Drusilla, she can’t ignore how he seems to keep everything about his past to himself unless forced. How can she love someone she doesn’t even know? A trip to a local mage later, she’s plunged headfirst into Angel’s entire sordid history in a series of visions. And dealing with all of that would have been a hell of a lot easier if Spike hadn’t somehow been pulled into it, happy to add the color commentary.
You Can Read in a Day

Of course, she has to find out eventually...

They’re also both on the phone, and don’t notice that the elevator they’re stepping into might have a few problems. Will they get to know each other once they get stuck inside, or will they be at each other’s throats sooner than William can say “pet” and Buffy can say “sexist jerk”?

Historical Fiction From A Favorite Time Period

Grace by Soulburnt [NC-17]
In the aftermath of 'Dead Things,' Buffy fears that Spike has dusted.  She doesn't think she can survive the world she's been pulled back into without him.  When she finds he's alive, Buffy takes a chance at reclaiming her own life by sharing her time, words... and even her blood.
Set in Your Home State - I’ll amend this to Europe
Just to Reach You by Sunalso [R]
Post-Series. Spike and Buffy have been a couple for almost two years. The honeymoon is over and together they're discovering they still have a lot to learn about themselves, each other, and how this whole "normal" relationship thing works.
You Once Started But Never Finished
These Violent Delights by Touchstoneaf [Adult Only]
Part 2 of the Something Wicked series  (S5, beginning with "Buffy vs Dracula") Spuffy have been together for a while now. Things have been great. The Scoobies have more or less accepted the reality of their couplehood, Spike finally has his own place, so there’s plenty of thoroughly excellent shag-time, and college is kind of fun when you have a worldly, undead tutor to poke fun at your instructors and help you remember your lessons with fascinating anecdotes or, when that fails, incredibly memorable sexy-times. Life is actually, like, bordering on good. But then Mr. Eurovamp 2000 blows into town and causes a bunch of jealousy. And then Buffy starts having a bunch of crappy Slayer dreams about glowy purply stuff. And Dawn is going off the hook even more than usual, and Mom is acting weird… And, as if there’s not enough to deal with, Buffy’s pretty sure that idiot Riley Finn is still lurking around town trying to come up with a reason to shoot her boyfriend… Buffy should have known things couldn’t stay yummy for long. She probably would have started to worry if it had.
With a One Word Title
Called by Dusty [PG-13]
A slayer, a vampire and how they called through the years.
A Fairy Tale Retelling
Ever Just As Sure by lafillesauvage [R]
Because there can never be enough Spuffy retellings of ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
A Fic Set in High School or Durig the High School Years
Beneath the Surface by The Danish Bird [NC-17]
Spike returns a little earlier to find his gem. The mayor decides that shooting Angel with a poison, which only Slayer blood can cure, is simply too risky for his Faith. And suddenly, Buffy finds herself locked up in a strange underground room in the company of her mortal enemy and the vampire who just broke her heart. But maybe it isn’t all bad. Maybe, this way, Angel will see that this idea about leaving for her own good is bad. Right? Spike, he just wants to get out, but if that’s out of the question, well then at least he’s going to try to have some fun! Starts out right after The Prom and before Graduation Day pt.I.
Fic Set in Another Country
Encapsulated by BillieLiar [NC-17]
“Hotel. I was supposed to have a hotel. This is so not a hotel.” “They’re called capsule hotels, luv, they’re getting common lately.”
Reread a Favorite Fic
Right Next (Door) to You by talesofstories [PG] - this is an all human story
“Why don’t you and Spike just move in together?” “Because that would be really weird? We’re neighbors and friends, Dawn; it’s not like we’re dating.” Buffy firmly ignored Dawn’s muttered, “You could have fooled me.” (Buffy and Spike are neighbors, best friends, confidants. What they aren't is dating. Which is the one thing that everyone assumes they are doing.)

He didn't know exactly when the bickering and annoyance turned into something more, he just knew that they had been building their way up to this at least since they had walked out of that alley as the sun threatened at the edge of the horizon; if he was completely honest with himself, probably since that moment in a darkened school hallway seven years ago. After holding back for so long, it was no surprise that when they finally let go, the result was explosively chaotic.
They had just gotten back from a patrol of the city, doing what they always did in the downtime between attacks from Wolfram and Hart, keeping the fight going strong and the demon population as low as could be expected for L.A.. Spike had shed his duster on one of the couches of the hotel’s lobby, left his blood and ooze coated axe on the floor, and headed out into the courtyard as he had every night since the fight that should have killed them all.
Except this night was different. This night, he hadn't waited for Angel to fetch the first-aid kit, hadn't waited until they'd patched each other up, as they did after every other rough fight. He hadn't gone to heat up their mugs of blood, hadn't scrounged up Angel's favorite bottle of whiskey, that he always sniffed out no matter where he'd tried to hide it. The routine Angel'd come to grow used to over the past few months was completely ignored. He'd simply walked right past Angel and out the other door.
Angel stared after him for a few moments, contemplating, before following after him. He knew the younger vampire had been injured in the battle, nothing major, but enough that the scent of his Grandchilde’s blood filled his senses, the rich spice of Aurelian blood, of family, overpowering the cloying scent of jasmine that usually kept him away from the courtyard. Beneath the scent of blood he could smell the storm of emotions brewing within the smaller blonde; the scent of Spike’s arousal, he expected, any fight worth its salt never failed to get both of them aching for release, the anger and desolation, however, he had not. What had made this night so different, he’d never know, Spike himself probably didn’t know, and he didn’t plan on asking him anytime soon; he wasn’t so sure he’d like the answer.
He briefly wondered if he should attempt to snap Spike out of his weird mood by nagging at him for leaving his stuff all over the lobby, but quickly dismissed it. He didn’t want to fight, he was tired of fighting, tired of the way their arguments had been escalating more and more lately, even more than they had before the alley. He felt that each yelling match, each little jab they took at each other was bringing them closer to a breaking point, and he didn’t want to think about what might happen once they reached it.
Still hovering in the doorway to the courtyard, he watched Spike walk over to the back wall of the property, kneeling beneath the birch sapling that marked Wesley’s grave. Confused further, Angel couldn’t help the sharp hitch in his breath when he suddenly smelt the salt-tang of tears that tinged the night breeze. Maybe they had reached their breaking point sooner than expected, without even the satisfaction of one final, knock-down, drag-out fight; Spike rarely ever cried, and usually only over the loss of love.
Angel felt a brief pang of jealousy wash over him at the thought of Spike crying over the loss of Wesley’s love, but quickly tamped it down, tossing the thought aside. It had been months since that dreadful night, and Spike had shown no more grief over Wesley’s death than expected of someone who had barely begun to become a friend of the deceased Watcher. No, these tears were the result of something more, something much longer in the making. He hesitated still when he saw Spike stand from his spot on the earth and cross over to one of the stone benches that were set around the yard and sat down. A bird let out a cry somewhere in the distance, and as if it had broken some spell that had been keeping Angel rooted to the spot, the elder vampire moved forward, quickly closing the distance between him and his Childe.
He stopped a foot away from Spike, their eyes meeting as Spike finally lifted his head to face him. The turmoil etched on his face made Angel wince, and he ached to reach out and brush away a tear that clung to his eyelashes.
Spike’s frown turned into a scowl as he stared up at Angel, and before Angel could prepare for it, he leapt from the bench, knocking the larger vampire down to the dirt. He straddled the brunette, his fists landing blows to Angel’s torso, his lips twisted in an ugly gash as he shifted into the face of his demon, fangs glinting in the moonlight that broke through the surrounding trees.
Angel let Spike pummel him, taking the hits and watching the tears continue to slide down his Childe’s face. As Spike’s rage seemed to flag, his punches losing force, Angel thrust up, flipping them over. Grabbing Spike’s wrists, he pinned his arms above his head as he pinned his body to the ground. He stared down at his anguished Childe, tempted to sink fangs into the stretched column of flesh of his neck as Spike turned his head away.
“Look at me, Spike!” Angel growled, his voice taking on a tone he hadn’t dared to use against Spike in decades, too reluctant to dredge up the emotions and memories so deeply enmeshed within the threads of that dominant timbre. “Childe, look at me, and tell me what the fuck that was about. Now.”
Spike let out a barely audible whimper and whipped his head back around to look up at Angel, unable to fully meet his stern gaze.
“Why?” Angel’s own eyes blurred at the wretched sound of just that one word, and he had to force himself not to stop Spike from speaking further. "Christ, Angel, I'm the only one left. The humans have all gone, the Blue Meanie's gone off God knows where. Slayer's livin' her life normal as she can, like we wanted for 'er. Even Dru has left her stars behind in favor of the sun. Months it's been, with no one to get between us, I've been there, by your side at every bloody fight, so why? Did I expect too much? Why haven't you come to me?"
Angel’s eyes narrowed against dawning realization, not wanting to understand as well as he did, unable to maintain ignorance, all the same. Still, Spike sobbed on.
"Did you think I don't know exactly why you run off to your bed as soon as we're through fixin' each other back up? Did you think I've forgotten the scent of your need? Did you forget mine? Months now, months, I've waited. For a look, a touch, anything. I know you want me, every time we argue, I know. Yet you've done nothing! God, how I've wanted to fuck you through the floor every bloody day, take you against every dirty brickwall in every dark alley."
"Then why haven't you?"
Angel couldn’t stop the question from spilling from his lips, and once spoken, needed to know the answer desperately. Spike blinked, mouth working silently as he processed the halt in his rant. He let out a shaky, incredulous laugh as he found his voice again.
"Because, you pillock, I couldn’t! Angelus ain’t so far gone from you that I’d risk you having my hide if I tried makin’ the first move to start things back up again. Learnt my lesson, didn’t I? Christ, mate, you nearly sent me out that sub through the torpedo hatch for it the last time. Was only lucky the lure of all that hot blood surroundin’ us had you riled up enough to give in. Me arm still hadn’t healed up completely ‘fore you made me swim for it. So, yeah, ‘s been up to you to take that step, pet.”
Angel let go of Spike’s wrists and sat back on his heels, his mind reeling. He’d let so much time go to waste, thinking that if Spike had wanted him, had wanted to start up again what they'd left behind so long ago, that he would have initiated it. He’d thought that Spike would have made some -probably loud, definitely vulgar- show of his desire as he had with every other thing he’d wanted from Angel over the years. Had he read everything so wrong?
Spike sat up slowly, demon face still to the fore as he haltingly closed the distance between them, his gaze lingering on Angel’s parted lips before flicking up to meet his eyes. The look on his face hardened, and Angel could feel him slipping away from him again, could see the walls going up behind his eyes, locking away the emotions he had allowed to break free.
“I’m done, Angel. From now on, we fight separate. I’ll still be here to help if some world-ender shows up, but I patrol alone. Try to keep your needs taken care of before you return after a fight, yeah? If it’s still unbearable, I’ll move out. Now, if there’s nothin’ else, mind movin’ your fat arse off me?”
Angel felt his face shift as he surged forward the final scant inches that separated them, his fangs nearly slicing through Spike’s bottom lip as he covered the pouting mouth with his own. Cool lips yielded easily to his with the whisper of a plaintive gasp, and Angel eased the body beneath him back to the ground as hands gripped at his back to pull him ever closer. The taste of Spike’s blood mingled with his own on his tongue as their fangs pricked each other's lips as they explored never-forgotten territory, and Angel growled into the mouth hungrily devouring his own.
His hands clawed desperately at Spike’s t-shirt, shredding the worn fabric with sharpened nails in his need to feel the cool, smooth flesh hidden beneath the black cotton. As he ran his hands over Spike’s chest, he felt him tugging urgently at his shirt, pulling it out of the waistband of his slacks, slim fingers reaching underneath to slide up his back, gripping at his skin. He broke the kiss, pulling back to quickly tear the shirt off, and stared down at his Childe, the yellow of his irises barely visible around wide-blown pupils, mouth gaping and panting with needless breath. Beautifully wanton, chest heaving, and hands endlessly running over any inch of skin he could reach, trying to urge the elder vampire back down to him. Angel wanted to kick himself; how could he have almost lost this glorious creature?
Bending back down, he bypassed Spike’s lips and nipped his way down his jaw, teasing blood to the surface of the pale skin, fangs pricking lightly at his earlobe before he finally spoke.
"Foolish Childe, I've never, never, stopped wanting you. Even through everything that came between us, that need has always been there. Have I forgotten your scent? I would know the scent of you among a crowd of thousands. It tore me up, smelling you, how hot you get after a good brawl, and not being able to ride you into the nearest surface." That tone was still threaded through his words, his chest rumbling with it as he spoke. He felt Spike shudder against him, the already heady scent of his arousal ramping even higher, causing Angel to suppress a groan as he inhaled deeply. "I will never not want you, Spike. I was just too stubborn to act on it, too proud and too scared to reach out to you again, never sure if that hatred you showed for me was really all an act. Every fight between us just solidified my belief that you wanted nothing more to do with me. You aren't going anywhere, Will, not now, not without me chasing you down and dragging you right back here. That enough of a first move for you?"
“Yeah, daresay it is, pet”, Spike moaned into his shoulder, mouthing ceaselessly at any inch of skin he could reach. “Fuck, Angel, we’ve both been so bloody stupid. No more talk, yeah? Wasted too much time already; it’ll keep till tomorrow. Need you.”
Angel growled his agreement into Spike’s ear, eliciting another full-bodied shiver, and teasingly dragged his fangs along the slope of his neck. As he flicked his tongue over the Siring mark on the curve of his shoulder, he felt Spike’s fingers pressing hard at the nape of his neck, a pleading keen falling from his lips. He sank his fangs into Dru’s mark, slipping easily through the pale flesh like a knife through warm butter, a gasping moan of pleasure filling his ears as the sharp tang of family blood filled his mouth. Spike arched up into him, fingers stroking over his skin soothingly as he swallowed down a few mouthfuls of the rich fluid.
Disengaging reluctantly from the closing wound, his tongue laving over it to clean away any last drops, Angel let his demon have a little more control, instinct taking over, and a purr of appreciation and approval rumbled up his throat at his Childe’s offering. He nuzzled briefly into the bared throat, Spike’s replying needy whimper telling him instantly that he wasn’t the only one reverting to his truer nature. Angelus crowed within him, and his already painfully hard cock pressed even more urgently at the zipper of his pants.
Letting his desire guide him, he quickly explored the expanse of smooth, hard flesh writhing deliciously beneath him, pausing only to lave his tongue over first one pebbled nipple, then the other. A steady stream of wordless sounds fell from Spike’s lips as Angel teased the pink buds to straining peaks. Sinking a fang into one of the taut nipples ripped a howl of pleasure from the younger vampire's throat, fingers fisting tightly in his hair as he lapped up the bead of blood from the flushed skin.
Continuing his path down the slim, trembling body, he licked and nipped at curves and muscles, swirling his tongue into Spike’s navel briefly before dragging his sharp teeth along the flat plane of his abdomen to one hip bone jutting starkly from the waist of his jeans. Sucking brusingly hard at the skin, he ran his hand up one quivering leg to paw at Spike's straining hardness. Angel growled hungrily at the spreading patch of wetness he felt dampening the denim and began to tear at the offending piece of clothing separating him from the eager flesh beneath. Silencing Spike's half-hearted snarl of offense at the sound of rending fabric with a warning growl, Angel raised up onto his haunches to hastily pull off Spike’s boots and shed his own pants, tossing them aside with uncharacteristic carelessness.
When the body he'd ached for for so long was finally bared to him, he wasted no time in swooping down to engulf the weeping cock within his mouth. Spike cried out in pleasure, hips arching up to thrust further into the wet coolness that surrounded his throbbing shaft.
"Christ, Angel!" Spike's voice was a breathy gasp, hoarse with the restraint he exerted in not coming at the first flick of that talented tongue over the head of his cock, one hand tangling in Angel's hair, pulling at the short strands as the other clawed at the dirt in desperation. "Sire, luv, please. Too much, gonna cum too soon; wanted this too long, please…"
Angel growled around the heavy length, pulling a deep groan from the blonde, and released his cock with one last slow lick over the leaking head, savoring the taste of his Childe's pre-cum. Gripping Spike’s thighs firmly, he spread his legs wider, baring that hidden ring of muscle to his pleasure. Dipping his head lower, he teased his tongue down over Spike’s heavy sac, delighting in the way he twitched and moaned at the feathery touch.
"Oh, gods, yes, please."
Slipping his tongue down along Spike’s perineum, Angel eased it between the spread firm globes of his ass, over that darker patch of skin that he had been away from for far too long. Working the slick muscle around the tightly furled ring, he felt his cock twitch and leak against his stomach as the rich, erotic, scent and taste of his Childe filled his senses. As the muscle relaxed, Angel pushed his tongue into the tight hole, earning another desperate keen as Spike tried to bear down on the intrusion, his legs trembling in the elder vampire’s grasp.
Licking deeper into him with each thrust, Angel let go of Spike’s legs, allowing them to hook over his shoulders, and pushed his hands under Spike’s ass, fingers flexing, digging into the clenching cheeks as he feasted ravenously. Feeling Spike clench more urgently around his tongue, he begrudgingly eased up his ministrations; he was determined that his Childe would only cum on his cock, and was unsure how well Spike would be able to hold back, as ramped up as they both were tonight. Licking lightly around the loosening ring for another minute, he pulled away.
Spike’s legs fell back to the ground as Angel rose up to his knees, and Angel nearly came himself at the sight he was treated to. Spike’s cock lay flat upon his stomach, the plump head fully exposed now, reddened and angry-looking, and leaking pre-cum copiously. He was heaving great gasps of unnecessary air, his body undulating fruitlessly in its effort to seek friction against the empty air above him. Such a beautiful, desperate picture he made, Angel groaned deeply and gripped tightly at the base of his cock to hold back the impending release he felt surging up from his balls.
Tearing his eyes away from the wriggling blonde, he brought his arm up to his lips and tore into his wrist, letting the blood run down his hand to coat his fingers. At the potent smell of Angel’s blood, Spike snarled and made to rise up from the ground, stopping only at the rumbling growl from his Sire. Carefully and quickly slicking his cock with the fluid, Angel dropped back over Spike, claiming his lips as he easily plunged two thick digits into the slick hole. Spike moaned against Angel’s lips, bucking down against the probing fingers as Angel scissored them, stretching him as efficiently as he could as he fought against the demon urging him to just tear into the tempting body squirming under him. Even running on instinct, he didn’t want to cause Spike unnecessary pain.
“Liam, please…” Spike breathed out, fingers scratching at Angel’s back, his knees digging into his sides as he tried to gain a more substantial leverage to push against. “Sire, please, need more.”
Thrusting a third finger into the widening hole, Angel pumped into him faster, pulling at the edges of the clenching ring of muscle. He felt Spike’s cock brush against his as the blonde arched up into him, drawing a groaning hiss from his lips. With one last fevered kiss and a final thrust of his fingers, he withdrew from the body writhing beneath him, rising back up on his knees. Spike whined at the loss and grabbed at him, trying to draw that reassuring bulk back down on him.
“Turn over”, Angel ordered, his demon pleased at the haste with which his Childe hurried to comply, a purr rumbling deep in his chest at the sight of the younger vampire rising onto all fours to present to him. “Good boy. Always so perfect, my little one”
Spike whimpered and visibly shuddered at the praise and possession, the demon responding to the approval of its elder. Angel growled hungrily at the arousing picture his boy made; ass high and wriggling enticingly in anticipation, legs spread wide, that slick hole visible and clenching against nothing, pale, lithe back sloping downward as Spike braced his head on the pillow of his hands. It was a sight he had sorely missed over the long decades, and his cock twitched, a thick drop of pre-cum dripping from the tip as he shuffled closer.
Settling between Spike’s legs, his hips pressing firmly against the trembling, pale cheeks, he spread Spike open to him further, his thumb dipping into the gaping hole testingly. Satisfied, he took himself in hand and notched the head of his aching cock at the rim of that tantalizing hollow. Pressing in on one smooth stroke, Angel let out a loud groan as he bottomed out, one hand gripping tight at Spike’s hip, the other sliding soothingly up his spine as the blonde keened and tried to buck further back onto him. Angel fought not to cum at the feeling of the tight muscle gripping his cock so greedily, his chest heaving with a panting snarl.
When the looming orgasm subsided, Angel leaned over Spike’s supple form, planting the palms of his hands flat to the ground, and began to thrust into him, short, fast strokes that pulled a series of whines and whimpers from the younger vampire's throat. Shifting his stance, he sought out that spot deep within his Childe that he knew would bring him quickly to the edge. As he felt his cockhead press against that spongy bundle of nerves, he was rewarded with a mewl of pleasure from the body trapped under him.
Thrusting steadily against Spike’s prostate, Angel dipped his head down to bury his nose in the curve of his boy's neck, snuffling against the skin as he let the demon take over again. Spike arched into the touch, turning his head to bare his throat in blatant offering. With a feral growl, Angel sank his fangs into the stretched column, his pace quickening as he felt his balls tightening, his climax once again rushing upon him.
Determined to bring Spike to completion first, he rutted against him, the tip of his cock punching brutally against his prostate with each stuttered thrust. Spike rocked back against each push into him as best he could, his nails clawing at earth, his vocabulary reduced to animalistic yips and yowls as Angel rode him into the dirt. Feeling Spike’s orgasm closing in on him, Angel shifted his weight onto one bracing arm, offering his wrist to him to complete the circuit of give and take. Spike tore into the proffered flesh, that first burst of rich blood on his tongue propelling him into his climax.
Angel let out a muffled roar around Spike’s throat as his muscles clamped down on him as he came, the smell of his Childe’s cum adding to the heady mixture already filling his head. Thrusting erratically into the tight hole milking him, he drank deeply from the blonde and let his orgasm overtake him, long spurts of cool seed shooting high into the tight channel that clenched around his pulsing cock.
As Spike’s climax subsided, Angel felt more than heard the rumbling purr that began deep in his Childe’s chest. He had retracted his fangs from Angel’s wrist, lapping up the spare droplets of blood from the closing wound with soft licks. Angel let out a responding purr of contentment as the final shots of cum expelled from him, his thrusts slowing to a soft rocking in and out of that grasping, slick, hole, unwilling to extract himself from that welcome softness just yet.
Spike collapsed to the ground, Angel following the movement, cock still buried deep within the pliant body. He nuzzled back against him, taking comfort in the bulk that covered him, a safety he hadn’t felt in years washing over him as he lay there beneath his Sire, his demon sleepy and sated.
Still attached to the blonde by cock and fang, Angel lifted his head from Spike’s neck, tongue flicking over the wound to clean away any remaining traces of blood. As his demon settled back down within him, he felt his softening cock slip from the friction-warmed embrace of his Childe’s hole, a whimper of loss sounding in his ear as Spike shifted slightly beneath him. Angel licked up the length of Spike’s throat, his demon face shifting away as he kissed a path along his jaw to the corner of his lips. Spike turned, his own face back to human form, and captured Angel’s mouth with his own. Tongues sought each other out, languidly tangling together as Spike maneuvered himself onto his back under Angel.
Feeling the mixture of blood, cum, and dirt caking his skin, Angel broke the kiss and pulled Spike with him as he stood up. Spike stared at him warily, cock laying still half-hard against his thigh. Angel felt his cock twitch at the sight of his dirtied Childe, hair mussed and skin bruised from his eager explorations. He smiled softly at him, and took his hand, tugging him along across the courtyard.
“We’ll talk tomorrow, remember?” Angel sensed Spike relax slightly behind him at the assurance and he pulled him to his side as they reached the door into the lobby, looking down into bright blue eyes. “Right now, all I want is a long, hot shower, preferably with you in it, and a good day’s sleep in a soft, clean bed, definitely with you in it. Now, my little one, are you going to come willingly, or do I have to go get the chains?”
Spike shuddered at the words and the images they conjured.
“I’ll come willingly if you promise to get the chains.”
Angel barked out a laugh and guided his insatiable Childe into the hotel ahead of him, his demon waking slightly at the prospect of the blonde bound to his bed for his pleasure. Whatever tomorrow brought, he could deal with, they could deal with, together.

~22/2/2022~ Felt important to post this ^^ on the day we created it 🎨 I got up promptly this morning so I could rush my nanny's card down to the post box before the collection time. Had clinical supervision for the trainee GMHP role - didn't realise how rough I looked til I appeared on camera. Carried on with my collage during it because as usual I had nothing to bring to it, and it helped me to tolerate some of the usual bizarre comments made by course tutor/supervisor - lost count of the amount of times I heard the words 'residual PTSD' and 'chronic' - and sitting there thinking he'd probably use the same words to describe me! 🤦‍♀️🙃 Carried on with my art to try to keep calm while waiting for phone call from ISVA with the outcome of my final appeal to the CPS - it was the outcome I had prepared myself to expect, but not the one I ultimately ever wanted - upheld the original decision not to charge and are taking No Further Action (NFA). 🥺😮 There is a lot to process - a 10 page letter! Although I may not agree with their reasoning, and am slightly despairing of how any historic case would make it to court by their standards, I do feel that at least this time their examination of the evidence had been thorough - that might make it easier to accept in some ways. ISVA said that upon comparing it to other final outcomes she felt my case came very close to be taken up. I've been feeling more okay with it than I thought I would, but still had to hibernate and cry under weighted blanket for a bit and have been experiencing trauma-related symptoms all day - mainly bodily sensations actually 😭 Decided I needed to get out so took a gentle trip down to Brighton on the bus and later spoke to AKA on the phone about the outcome while I sat on the beach watching the sun go down 🌅😢 Got home a bit later than normal, but been colouring this evening... 🦄 #instadaily #instablog #update #mentalhealth #dissociativeidentitydisorder #cptsd #autism #traumarecovery #edrecovery #anxiety #chronicillness #disability #pots #potsie #dysautonomia #positivevibes #recovery #art #artistoninstagram #artistofinstagram #moodboard #collage #suicideprevention #survivor #catlove #creativity https://www.instagram.com/p/CaS5il-qPlrul7PVgMgZVF1BK5w8rYLalYosuw0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Grateful Dead Monthly: Lindley Meadows (Golden Gate Park) – San Francisco, CA 9/28/75
Tumblr media
On Sunday, September 28, 1975, the Grateful Dead played a concert at Golden Gate Park’s Lindley Meadows in San Francisco, California.
Tumblr media
Lindley Meadows
From the Wiki: “In the 1860s, San Franciscans began to feel the need for a spacious public park similar to [NYC’s] Central Park. Golden Gate Park was carved out of unpromising sand and shore dunes that were known as the Outside Lands, in an unincorporated area west of San Francisco’s then-current borders.” Frederick Law Olmsted was the driver. He was the guy who conceptualized Central Park, and later Jackson and Washington Parks in Chicago, as well as the whole shebang for Chi’s 1893 Columbian Exposition and most of the nearby U of C campus. Olmstead “proposed a plan for a park using native species suited for San Francisco’s dry climate; however, the proposal was rejected in favor of a Central Park-style park needing extensive irrigation.” Nice try, man.
The park got a Commissioner in 1871, and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department began overseeing its development. Between then and now, it’s been basically urban green space. Per the Wiki, GGP is roughly the same shape as Central Park, but twenty-percent bigger. It’s bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the West and the Haight on the East. And it’s the third most-visited park in the United States, after Central Park and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
So Lindley Meadows?
Tumblr media
See the oval on the left side of that sat pic? It’s Golden Gate Park Polo Field. Apparently, Lindley Meadows is the green area that sits just above its northeast corner. Guys, I’ve never been to California, much less SF. I’m not a super-traveled person, so some of these venue write-ups seem poser-y. They’re not intended to be. Apologies for the lack of local knowledge, and feel free to add anything like that below the line.
The Dead played exactly four shows in 1975. On 3/25, they played a benefit for San Francisco Students Need Athletics, Culture, and Kicks (SF SNACK) with the Doobies, the Starship, Santana, Dylan & Baez, and Neil Young. The band’s set was comprised of the Blues for Allah material that everybody pretends to dig (but nobody really does). I’m not familiar with that show. On 6/17, they played at Winterland, and the setlist was also BFA-forward. I’m not familiar with that show, either, but, according to the Grateful Dead of the Day blog, it gets attention nowadays. On 8/13, they played at the Great American Music Hall – that’s One from the Vault, and we’ve covered it before. Finally, on 9/28, they played at Lindley Meadows. Single set show, which clocks in at just under two hours. A lot of BFA material, but a lot of well-toured and well-beloved chestnuts, too.

In a 2008 post about this show, the Grateful Dead Listening Guide blog makes two points. First, there’s an absolutely epic audience recording. To wit: “[T]his is one of the audience tapes that historically was said to have been recorded by the band (Phil Lesh in particular) from the stage itself … It is absolutely one of the very best of the best AUDs. But Phil didn’t tape it. Phil didn’t make any tapes.”
Tumblr media
GDLB continues, and this is great:
“[B]efore this century [meaning the ’00s], if you weren’t in the most enshrined trading circles, you couldn’t find a complete copy of this AUD to save your life (and the real deal master itself only just went into circulation in May 2008). When you might have run into this recording (I was lucky enough to score 45 minutes of the show on cassette about 12 years ago), there was no way you could accept that it was an AUD at all. Clearly Phil and the band had to have had a hand in making this tape, right? It just sounded WAY too good. And there was the fact that there were a painful amount of right channel dropouts throughout the tape which allowed you to appreciate the quality, but never really left you wanting to listen to the tape again because of the pain involved in those dropouts.
Then the SBD came on the scene, sounding super duper. Someone digitized the AUD (a multi-gen version) and spent the time patching the dropouts with the left channel – palatable now, the AUD was a dizzying drink from the fountain of audience magic. Well friends, that was nothing…
I’m not going to attempt to document the story of taper Bob Menke here on these pages. Let’s just say that BadBob (his own moniker) bleeds the history of Grateful Dead taping and collecting. He’s one of those fellows whose name lands in the inner circle when playing the dart game of Dead tapers. ‘Nuff said. Menke’s story has been one of clouded half truths, misunderstandings, and mystery in the eyes of tape collectors. Over the last number of years, the real Bob Menke has made his way into the digital scene, so a lot of the mystery has faded. But, it sure did fuel the fires that made this particular tape one of such grand story telling. This is one to tell the grandkids about, to be sure.
So Menke recently digitally transferred his master, and the MOTB crew [dunno] finished it off with heroic editing (glad I didn’t face this task). And now we have this AUD for the ages, in its most beautiful glory.
The recording is so good, it makes the AUD vs. SBD debate seem silly. It’s a little unfair, like bringing an NBA all star off the bench at a junior high basketball game. So much so, that it’s fair for a SBD supporter to cry foul – ‘Oh, well, 09/28/75! You can’t talk to me about that show. That’s not fair.’ Regardless, when you want to know what it might have sounded like pressed up against the stage for this hallmark Dead show in the year after they retired (you may never see them again), this is it my friends. Cripplingly good.”
Tumblr media
There’s a link to the Menke AUD below, but on to the second point. Apparently, the band was “high” – as in, their performance was chemically enhanced by LSD. Again, GDLG:
“Then there’s the well enough substantiated story that the band was higher than kites for this show. While it has always been very well understood that this band played under the influence of LSD many many many times, there are some shows that come to mind when Deadheads talk about shows where the band was ‘known’ to have been chemically altered for sure: 08/27/72, 05/11/78, and 09/28/75 among them. So, this places an extra special sparkle to re-living the day’s concert when listening.
Also, there is the fact that a baby was born during the show [check banter after Slipknot!], with the band and stage announcers doing their best to help.”
Tumblr media
Acid, a baby, and no deaths? It’s like a good time Altamont. Right, Jerry?
Tumblr media
GDOTD offers some listening notes:
“It opens with a sharp and focused Help On The Way before heading into a moody Slipknot!, which rages in the latter half. Rather than transitioning into Franklin’s at that point, as they had during the two other times they had paired those songs, the Slipknot! ends, and they launch into a smoking The Music Never Stopped. On that tune, Donna adds lovely backing vocals, as she does throughout the afternoon.”
Tumblr media
More GDOTD:
“[A]fter a bit of banter, they finally hit the Franklin’s Tower, playing in mind-meld form throughout with Phil throwing down and the entire band contributing to a seismic jam after the ‘listen to the music play’ line. Then, Bobby announces that they will be playing a cowboy tune, before rolling into Big River, throughout which Keith serves up some incredible fills. After It Must Have Been The Roses, a marvelous Truckin’ takes off and eventually steers into a blistering jam … [T]he boys slow things up just a notch, Phil rains down a series of bombs, and Jerry streaks around before ceding the stage to the drummers. The Drums themselves are transcendent, but the Stronger Than Dirt that follows is face melting. What’s more, the transition into Not Fade Away is rapturous as the drummers drive on the change, but the rest of the guys resist, teasing out the last of the Stronger Than Dirt theme while slowly falling to the inevitable momentum of NFA. And what a Not Fade Away it turns out to be with serious, imaginative jamming all the way through to the Going Down The Road Feeling Bad, which is itself resplendent. Then One More Saturday Night caps the show in rocking, high-energy fashion.”
Tumblr media
That’s cool, but there are listening notes, and then there’s our guy. Without further ado, here’s everyone’s favorite. The master of zero disasters, the king of schwing, the 88’s tickler, the Peloton’s boss, the cherry on top, the sun behind that one annoying cloud, the reason that outside cats come back home, the guy who rolled his eyes at all those Dos Equis commercials b/c #beentheredonethat, the Ig influencer behind @31daysofdead, and the better half of this gotdam thing. Man/myth/legend is just a trope until you meet him in person. He’s handsome; he’s erudite. He’s a man beyond description and, in his rare spare time, a member of Jehovah’s favorite choir. He’ll break it down, fo’realize. Ladies and Gentlemen, LN Grateful Deaditor, ECM…
“Hey now, kids! Today we’ve got some ‘Hiatus Dead’ for you. As most of you know, Hiatus Dead refers to that period of time between 10/20/74 (Winterland) and 6/3/76 (Portland, OR) when the Grateful Dead took some time off from touring. During this period, the band played only four shows, all of them in 1975. The show JF and I are featuring in this month’s edition of Grateful Dead Monthly – September 28, 1975 – is the last of those 4 shows and it would be the last show for over 8 months. This show is unique for a lot of other reasons too. First, it was a free show in Lindley Meadows in Golden Gate Park at a time when that kind of thing didn’t happen anymore like it did back in the 60’s. Another thing the band hadn’t done in a long while was play a show while they were tripping. Legend has it that they revisited that part of their past as well on this day. Although this has never been confirmed, it sure makes for a good story and at least seems plausible given the overall strangeness and looseness of the music compared with their very tight performance at the Great American Music Hall just a month prior on August 13th. In addition, unlike most GD shows where the band is virtually mute, here there is a lot of funny and odd stage banter – Bobby’s joke about getting around to all the old favorites that they can remember, the calls for a doctor to attend to the woman in the audience that was going into labor and Phil clarifying for the crowd that Truckin’ is NOT pronounced Truck-ing.
Tumblr media
Another factor making this show unique is the weather which was unseasonably chilly for September. With temperatures down in the 50’s, it felt more like November than September which brings us to another unique aspect about this show – the band’s attire. Instead of Bobby wearing his signature Lacoste polo shirt and cutoff shorts, on this day he is wearing a Pendelton jacket with bell-bottoms. And, Garcia is rocking a leather jacket with Puma sneakers(!) While we are talking about attire, let’s also talk about instruments. This was allegedly the debut of Jerry’s new guitar, Travis Bean. It’s the guitar that he would use until 9/28/77 when he started playing his Doug Irwin Wolf again. Keith plays an electric Fender Rhodes the entire show. These two instruments certainly influenced the sound of the band that day.
Tumblr media
Which brings us to the MUSIC…
The Grateful Dead played one set which clocked in at approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. They opened with Help>Slipknot. It’s the third one ever but just the second with lyrics. Jerry botches the last verse. It happens. Slipknot! is the third one but the first not going into Franklin’s Tower. It is played slowly, but deliberately, and they pull off the complex arrangement with flying colors. However, things come to a rather abrupt end when they call a halt because Jerry apparently breaks a string – he is audibly absent in the closing riffs. This is the point when the woman is having a baby too.
Once everything on stage is ironed out and a doctor is located for the woman in labor, the band launches into the Music Never Stopped. It is only the second performance and is a mere 6 minutes. Donna crushes her verse. This early version has only a few bars of the drifty mid-jam section and then charges right into the ending jam which only hints at the potential that it would soon become. Once the song concludes there are more stage announcements. A doctor has been located and now there are pleas for a stretcher.
Tumblr media
“Oh, man. That’s weird. A stretcher?”
They Love Each Other is up next – perhaps inspired by the woman having the baby(?). Either way, it’s the first in over 1½ years and the first without the bridge section. This performance has a unique sound and tempo that is played somewhere in between the peppy versions from the 1973-74 era and the slower versions from the 1976 and later era. It is almost reggae-like. Jerry gives it a sensitive reading – sweet and subdued in its expressiveness. Afterwards Phil comes to the microphone to tell the father of the newborn child that his help is needed (Help on the Way?). That’s when Bobby comes to the microphone to assure the fans who are calling out requests that ‘we will get around to all the old favorites that we can remember.’ Cheers and laughter ensue to which Bobby responds, ‘you wouldn’t be laughing if you knew what that meant.’
Tumblr media
Bobby cameltoe, ftw.
With the the band launches into a spirited version of one of their oldest songs from their first album – Beat it on Down the Line. Maybe this was a musical message to the father of the newborn baby to get moving and help his wife(?) Weir’s old buddy and bandmate from Kingfish, Mattew Kelly joins on harmonica. His playing is faint, but present, and adds a nice counterpoint to Jerry’s guitar.
The band completes the piece of their musical triptych that is missing due to the equipment and baby interruptions by playing a stand-alone Franklin’s Tower from a cold start. It is the third version ever and it is exquisite. The drums are groovin’ and Jerry’s on fire especially after the ‘if you get confused, listen to the music play’ line. Great call and response at the end. This is the song that made it onto the abbreviated version [featuring one song from every year] of the box-set 30 Trips Around the Sun that appears on Spotify.
Tumblr media
There are more calls from the audience for songs – apparently somebody is calling for Truckin’ but Phil does not like the way the fan is pronouncing it. ‘Did I hear someone say TRUCK-ING? That’s not how you say it. You don’t say TRUCK-ING. But anyway, we’re not gonna play that now. We’re gonna play something else.’ Weir then comes to the microphone to announce that ‘Billy would like to make a small point to the fact that we’re playing a cowboy tune.’ That leads into rootin-tootin’ version of Big River which has nice solos from Jerry and Keith.
A letter-perfect reading of It Must Have Been The Roses follows. Jerry’s voice is at its pure, sweet unaffected peak. Excellent vocal harmonies from Jerry and Donna. Keith’s work on the electric piano provides the perfect accompaniment.

Phil returns to his Truck-ING banter which signals that the band is now ready to play it. Weir warns the crowd that he’s not going to remember the words, and he makes good on his promise by not only forgetting most of them, but also forgetting to sing part of the second verse at all.  No worries. The jam that follows is fantastic thanks in large part to all the tight material the band had been playing over the past year when they were rehearsing and recording Blues for Allah. There is some heated controversy among fans about the jam that comes out of Truckin’. Some have said that it is The Eleven. In fact, the 30 Trips box set refers to it that way. I don’t hear it but it’s an exciting jam for sure! To me, it sounds more like a King Solomon’s/Stronger Than Dirt groove which is what the band segues into following Drums. This is the fourth and final King Solomon’s. It’s definitely the loosest. There are a few rough spots at first it recovers and maintains a solid groove.

There is a loose transition into Not Fade Away. The lead in is funky and rockin.’ Garcia peels off a slide-flavored, acid-drenched solo which is the start of a long, spacey transition to GDTRFB which is also funky with some amazing energy. Saturday Night caps the show in rocking, high-energy fashion. a hoarse-sounding Phil bids the audience farewell, ‘Let’s have another party like this again sometime.’ And with that, the band slipped back into hibernation mode and would not perform again for another eight months.”
As Ed mentioned, this show is part of the massive 30 Trips Around the Sun box set.

And it’s still on the Live Music Archive. Transport to the soundboard recording HERE, a matrix recording HERE, and Menke’s audience recording HERE. According to Menke,
“It was an overcast day and we got there early. About 8:30 in the morning. That is how we ended up about 10-15 feet from the stage. The mics were mounted on broom sticks (handheld) and they were split about 20 feet apart. The upfront vocals I believe are the product of a small (relative to PA speakers) speaker on the floor of the stage next to the right PA column. The vocals seem to be blasting from that speaker. Another very intersting point is the fact that the Jefferson Starship opened and their sound from the same PA absolutely sucked. Nothing approaching the clarity and sound quality the Dead got from the same system.”
There you go.
More soon.
