The Wedding Veil Expectations
I swear Jan, never fails to feel like such a blah month for me. But I am back and catching up on this series.
Sometimes a second movie for Hallmark doesn’t always mean better. But that’s not the case with this one. I actually enjoyed this one over the first one. But let’s be real, I love seeing the continuation past the final end kiss and/or wedding since we never see it. So I was so happy to return to this story and see Avery and Peter in married life and even a bit of parenthood, even if it wasn’t as much as I liked. But I thought the story of fixing their place plus Avery trying to tell Peter about the baby, it was all so refreshing to see. Plus it was great seeing more friendship moments between the girls as I felt like they were in this one more. Now I was curious to see how the veil would continue it’s story but I loved seeing Peter’s mom have a chance for romance again and experiencing the magic of veil. So I was happy to see Hallmark shining the light of older people falling in love again as again it’s something we don’t see often. Obviously seeing the cast come back was great. Lacey and Kevin are still a wonderful duo. Overall, this was a really nice addition to the series.
Rating: 3 - I would probably watch this one more than I would their first movie honestly.
But what did you think about this one? What did you like/dislike about it? Feel free to let me know!

"the earth trembles at the passing of the humble fruit fly" is objectively one of the funniest lines I've heard in a movie because it's delivered with such solemnity. my brother quotes this at least twice a year and has done so since 2013. yes, this is my pitch for you to watch epic (2013)

Despite Potential, ‘The Tiger’s Apprentice’ is a Rushed Effort
The new Paramount+ animated film, The Tiger’s Apprentice, is arriving just in time for the Lunar New Year (yet two years past the Year of the Tiger). Based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Laurence Yep, it follows 15-year-old Tom Lee who, in the aftermath of his grandmother’s death, becomes the apprentice to the tiger zodiac, Hu, and rise to the occasion of becoming the guardian of an…

A Dog Lover’s Guide to Dating
We are here! The first movie of 2023! Let’s get right into it!
Sometimes I know before going into some of these movies that I’m just going going to care much for them and this one was just that. So I’m not big into the animal themed movies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge animal lover, but there’s not much to do plot wise. I paused the movie a few times to do other things and that alone isn’t a great sign. Of course the dogs were adorable and I appreciated Alex’s issue with love due to her father, but I want more of it or at least a more meaningful resolution to it. The ending was probably where I got the most excited because the setting was nice and the dialogue was sweet. The actors and the adorable dogs were really my enjoyment for this movie. I was happy to see the first movie of the new year with a new face. I thought Rebecca was lovely leading lady. I adore Corey so I was excited to see him yet again. While I didn’t care the story, I thought they were a sweet duo.
Rating: 1 - Sadly, I don’t really see myself rewatching this one again. If I do, it will be a purely a background movie for me.
But what did you think about this one? What did you like/dislike about it? Feel free to let me know!

kurt russell's elvis voice was perfect, i won't lie. he definitely got it down. he just may be my favorite elvis?? i just think his lip syncing was a little wonky lol as far as the movie goes . meh. i didn't care for it. i enjoyed his backstory, didn't really understand why they kept bringing up red like he was an important part of the movie and the constant upbringing of jesse 😭

The Boy And The Heron Movie Review - It's Alright
Guess who got sick right after seeing this movie? ME! I know I should be resting, but I am still able to type. Nothing can stop me from writing. I was interested in watching this movie and when my brother watched it and told me “It’s alright.” It got me even more curious. Well, to be fair, my brother usually gives vague responses.
Tumblr media
So, I went to watch the movie. How was it? It definitely was an ‘alright’ movie. Like, it’s not bad but not great—if “bad” and “amazing” were on a scale, “alright” would be smack dab in the middle. Like, it’s definitely a Miyazaki film from how it’s animated to all the imagery and tropes he uses, but at the same time, the execution is like a roller coaster going down. It’s not Miyazaki’s best film, but one of his most ambitious creations. Though, I do think that the title is misleading as “The Boy And The Heron” feels like a literal title, but the story is more about the boy, Mahito, rather than both the heron and him, so I think that the title should’ve been “How Do You Live?” because that is ultimately the true message of the story.
I love that if you watch the film, you can see that Miyazaki made it. From the classic Ghibli running animation to the beautiful scenery, you can tell Miyazaki worked on this film, but it’s also an improvement from his previous creations. My favorite little details are how Miyazaki animates clothes. The clothes flutters well and the way they move around is really good. The scenery is a step up in classic Miyazaki as the fantasy aspect of this film is like Miyazaki going from Lv. 90 to Lv. 100 in terms of artistic game. I also especially love the way Mahito creates the bow from bamboo and other material. Just seeing him creating all of it and seeing the actual process was a pure visual banquet.
The story’s plot isn’t concrete, but it’s something that one has to think about. I quite liked the overall story as I do like something that I have to think about rather than being fed a plot and expect something out of it. The story takes place post-WWII in Japan as Mahito loses his mother to a hospital fire. Three years later, he and his father move to the countryside where he meets Natsuko, his new stepmother (and his aunt—she’s his late mother’s younger sister) and lives in a house where there are many elderly housekeepers. Mahito is still grieving over the loss of his mother that he rejects the company of Natsuko and the grannies and mainly just keeps to himself. He does meet a talking grey heron and later embarks on a journey inside a magical abandoned tower where Natsuko has been spirited away to in order to rescue her.
The story kind of started off slow in the beginning, which is where the reality portions were. It’s mainly to build up Mahito and how he copes with his mother’s death and how he was thrown into this sudden change in environment from getting a new mother to not being able to fit in school to the point that he hits himself with a rock to avoid going back. There’s also him trying to fend off the heron as he finds it an annoyance. Once the story has it so that Mahito is forced to go to the fantasy world inside the tower to save the spirited away Natsuko, the pacing goes by really fast. One moment Mahito is on a boat with Kiriko, then he’s with Himi in her house, then he’s with Granduncle and then with parakeets. I think the fast pacing is meant to show how different and magical it is compared to the slower, mundane aspects of reality.
As a protagonist, I think Mahito is a good one; while he isn’t Ghibli’s best protagonist, he is written in a way that fits the vibes and messages of the story. My favorite aspect of Mahito as a character is that he’s intelligent. He’s able to create weapons from materials around his house like a bow made of bamboo and an arrow made from the heron’s feathers that he glued together with sticky rice. He’s also quietly chaotic. Like, in usual Ghibli films, the protagonist would befriend the deuteragonist after the second meeting, but Mahito was in full killing mode—he wanted that heron GONE. The heron as a character is quite interesting. He’s not a villain, but he’s clearly not an antagonist either. His actions were mainly due to being ordered by the Granduncle. The heron feels mainly like comic relief, mainly towards the second half of the film where his importance gets snuffed after he gets his beak fixed. Though, I always did wonder why the heron was the only bird that turns human while the other birds were personified caricatures.
The supporting cast was decent. Shoichi was a rather good dad in terms of how Japanese media usually treats father characters as either incompetent or bumbling; Shoichi cares a lot for Mahito, but he’s also someone who a bit self-centered as he flaunts off his wealth and never really asks for Mahito’s opinions on getting a new mother. Kiriko definitely stood out as the tough woman and the first of Mahito’s friends in the fantasy world. She’s the younger version of one of the housekeepers, as noted by the patterns on her kimono. Himi was cute and I loved that she’s a representation of accepting her life how it is. While Natsuko did serve as a point of conflict between her and Mahito, I do wonder why she was able to leave the delivery room, when it was taboo for people to enter. The Granduncle does seem like he’s an allusion to Miyazaki himself in that he’s seeking a successor to his world, so he sought out either the baby inside Natsuko or Mahito himself. The granduncle is someone looking for a pure world free of malice, but that is impossible. Even Mahito, as pure as he seems, isn’t free from malice as his actions, the one that caused him a scar on his temple, was out of malice. I think this was a good symbolism that the world can never really be a place where it’s only just purity. Purity and malice coincide like light and darkness. The way the world collapses is Granduncle accepting that reality and that he just lets Mahito go back to his world to live how he wants to live.
I’m convinced Miyazaki has a vendetta towards birds in this film as they are very vicious, but when I think about it deeper, birds are fitting animals for this film. A lot of Miyazaki’s films has flight as one of his staple tropes in animation. He really likes flying and having birds as the main creatures for this film encompasses this very well. The warawaras, the cute white blobs are also creatures of flight, so it definitely incorporates his fondness for flight.
The soundtrack was pure Joe Hisashi magic. I loved every song in the film. There’s just something so magical about Hisashi’s scores. Hot take: I would react more emotionally if news of Hisashi’s retirement comes out than news about Miyazaki’s retirement.
I watched the film in Japanese with English subtitles. While I heard the English dub is good with the amazing casting, I think that there’s still something about watching a Ghibli film in its original language—The Boy and The Heron is actually the first time I watched a Ghibili movie in Japanese—that makes the experience feel a bit more…magical? Given that the characters and setting are in Japan, so hearing the characters in their original language does feel like I’m watching a foreign film. I think the casting is perfect to the point that I can’t find any fault with the vocal performances.
Anyways, if this is Miyazaki’s swan song of a film, it’s actually a good way for him to end after years of bringing magic into the world. Personally, it’s not the best film he has produced, but it’s a project good enough as a closure to all of his success throughout the years. Will he make another film before his death? I don’t know but if he doesn’t, then this film is still a good way to end his film career. Would I recommend you to watch it? I’d say that it’s good for a first time watch, but it doesn’t really garner a second time watch for me. What are your thoughts about this movie if you have seen it?

I've just rewatched Barbie and well,I have excacelly same thoughts while watching it the first time - THIS MOVIE SLAPS !
Yeah, maybe a lil bit overated by the internet, but hey, STILL A GREAT ONE !
I really like the plot and the deep meaning of it. And like, I hear some people talking : "Nah, it's too famisnistic" or "It's so childish", blah blah, blah
And I'm like : YES, THAT WAS THE PREMISE OF THIS MOVIE ! And it's ok. There should be more films like that, as the problem of treating women unfairly is something that more people should talk about.
Alright, I know I'm starting to be more political, but what I ment is that meaning of the movie is just wise.
And an acting of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is fenomenal. They both are literally perfect for the roles of Barbie and Ken. And yes...maybe they kinda hot...but maybe lets not change the topic hehe
And also, can someone else also adores Alan, bc, my gosh, he's so silly and funny. He kinda gives me a vibe of stereotipical gay men, (which I like), but anyways...
Overall, I would rate this movie like... let's say 8,8/10, yeah
And yes, I wanna wish you all a Happy New Year. Let's hope that 2024 will be much better than 2023.
And I would be also greatful, if you could leave a heart for my cat Chuchu, as she'll have a stressfull night, becouse of the fireworks.

Other 2022 Recommendations
Tumblr media
I often find a fascinating piece of media with at least one Asian or Hispanic/Latin American entertainer prominently involved, but don’t end up blogging about it. Sometimes, I feel too far from the target demographic to properly discuss it. Other times, my admiration doesn’t feel as deep as it does for the likes of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Yet other times, the subject seems too intricate for me to blog about, especially if I check it out beyond its time of relevance. Still, some of this media felt entertaining and/or noteworthy enough for at least lip service. For brevity’s sake, I’ll limit my recommendations to works released this year. Each section lists them by order of release date.
Most of these works have more Asian, Hispanic, and/or Latin American cast and crew members than listed.
Honorable Mentions
Various Disney Channel cartoons: The Owl House (episodes #30-41 aired this year) and The Ghost and Molly McGee (#11-20) deliver charm and emotional appeal, best appreciated when watching the respective shows in whole. The Owl House probably would've risen into the Recommended TV Shows section if Disney didn't force everyone involved to rush the story.
Easter Sunday: Reportedly the first major motion picture with a predominantly Filipino-American cast, this comedy draws laughs from satirizing FilAm family quirks and celebrity worship culture. Unfortunately, while the characters' exaggerated demonstrations of admiration for Manny Pacquiao formed the plot line that I enjoyed the most, they wouldn't amuse viewers who never belonged to his fanbase - as I once did - and/or wish that the movie gave his role to someone non-homophobic.
Toon Makers' Sailor Moon pitches: The long-awaited unearthing of a cheesy, unfaithful, and failed attempt to adapt Naoko Takeuchi's beloved manga for American children deserves acknowledgement in this year-end retrospective, as well as at least one viewing from American Sailor Moon fans.
Recommended Movies
Tumblr media
Turning Red: The nostalgic feature-length directorial debut of a future Pixar vice president of creative proved objectively nice enough to become one of my top 10 favorite movies from the studio.  It also became the first Pixar picture from this decade that I would purchase on Blu-ray and digital.
Starring Rosalie Chiang as Mei Lee and Sandra Oh as Ming Lee
Co-Starring several other Asian actors, including Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya Manga, Hyein Park as Abby Park, and Wai Ching Ho as Wu
Directed by Domee Shi
Written by Domee Shi and Julia Cho
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: Delightfully expert comic timing and a wide emotional range help develop passionate cinephile Javi Gutierrez beyond a wish-fulfilling self-insert.
Starring Pedro Pascal as Javi Gutierrez
Father of the Bride: Among all the movie adaptations released so far of Edward Streeter's novel, the humor and drama of this one feel the most up my alley, though I felt I needed at least one more viewing to fully grasp the worth of the added divorce-related storylines.
Starring Andy Garcia as Billy Herrera, Gloria Estefan as Ingrid Herrera, and Adria Arjona as Sofia Herrera
Co-Starring Isabela Merced as Cora Herrera, Diego Bonita as Adan Castillo, and Pedro Damián as Hernan Castillo
Directed by Gary Alazraki
Written by Matt Lopez
Bonus Features
Embrace the Panda: Making Turning Red: As with Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, Turning Red's most insightful extra feature remains exclusive to Disney+.
Almost Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Everything Everywhere All at Once: The Everything Everywhere All at Once Blu-ray and DVD contain the most comprehensive extras platter I've found in quite a while for a brand-new movie, especially since this 41-minute documentary runs longer than every other documentary I've seen on an A24 Blu-ray.  One of the other bonus features even reached the big screen, when EEAaO's critical and financial successes convinced A24 to theatrically distribute a version of the film with the gag reel tacked onto the end.
Recommended TV Shows
Tumblr media
Our Flag Means Death Season One: While not the main character, incognito assassin Jim Jimenez and their vengeful plight form some of this charming show's most intriguing subplots.
Co-Starring Vico Ortiz as Jim Jimenez and Guz Khan as Ivan
Guest-Starring Fred Armisen as Geraldo

Amphibia episodes #50-58: The most widely-appealing Disney Channel cartoon I've seen with a female lead of color aired its last nine episodes this year, and managed to stick the landing in the finale.
Created by Matt Braly
Starring Brenda Song as Anne Boonchuy
Co-Starring Anna Akana as Sasha Waybright, Haley Tju as Marcy Wu, On Braly as Mrs. Boonchuy, and Brian Sounalath as Mr. Boonchuy
Co-written by Jenava Mie (#52a "Sasha's Angels"; #54a "The Root of Evil"; #57 "All In") and Gloria Shen (#50 "Return to Amphibia"; #52b "Olm Town Road"; #55a "Newts in Tights"; #57 "All In")
What We Do in the Shadows Season Four: This offshoot of my favorite Taika Waititi movie deftly pulls off a literally monstrous premise with strong comedy and pathos.  Season Four's changes to the status quo resulted in some worthwhile revelations and storylines, even if not all of those changes will carry over into Season Five.
Starring Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Relentless and Harvey Gullién as Guillermo de la Cruz
Co-starring Anoop Desai as the Djinn and Parisa Fakhri as Marwa
Directed by Tig Fong (#36: "The Wedding")
Written by Marika Sawyer (co-wrote #36: "The Wedding"; wrote "#38: "Go Flip Yourself" alone)
Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World: This miniseries delivers some fascinating insight into various types of South American wildlife, and their relationships with the environment and humans.
Narrated by Pedro Pascal
Starring various South American scientists as themselves
Andor Season One: Due to my preference for Star Wars chronicles that instill a sense of accomplishment and/or hope, episodes in which the Empire inflicts realistic despair only appeal to me if I can bunch them with ones in which Cassian and his peers achieve rousing and immensely satisfying, yet either small or incomplete, victories.  While this condition and the relatively low view counts could call into question Disney+'s decision to release Chapters 4-12 at a rate of one per week, the season's grounded insight into the Rebellion, captivating performances, and high-quality production values still turn this into one of the most exemplary Star Wars TV shows.
Starring and Executive Produced by Diego Luna as Cassian Andor
Co-Starring Adria Arjona as Bix Caleen, Varada Sethu as Cinta Kaz, and Andy Serkis as Kino Loy
Guest-Starring Antonio Viña as Kassa
