Watching Netflix's avatar, spoilers below
"Netflix atla Liveblog" will be the tag to block to miss these posts (I'm live blogging bc I'm overwhelmed with emotion i have to take breaks)
Tumblr media
Oh noooo I love it. I went into this with optimism and hope in my chest and these first minutes are feeding me.
I am full heartedly going into this accepting that adaptations have to change and remove things and so far, I really like what they've done!!!
Spoiler but gyatso just told aang that he must "remember who he is" once he leaves to learn the other elements and!!!! Setting up a Zuko parallel this early?????? :0 if they go that route I APPROVE!!
Also, since I'm here: the opening fight scene was good and I am so glad sozin straight up immolated a guy on screen and his head sage was like [shocked Pikachu face] yeah I BET you didn't think "start a war" meant you were gonna see that shit in your living room

episode 3 thoughts
the merging of like 40 different storylines right here is crazy
i’m really sad we’re not getting the northern air temple plot line. that’s such a beautiful episode about accepting change and dealing with grief and it’s such a shame to see it cut for time
i am begging for better katara characterization. PLEASEEE tell me that we get the haru storyline and that katara gets to be the star of that episode because she is not being done any favors rn
CABBAGE MERCHANT W
what the hell was that “for the fire nation!” shit that iroh pulled???? genuinely this episode was so packed full of random bullshit i don’t understand what the purpose of that was
is it supposed to be when iroh gets arrested by the earth kingdom and leaves the flip flop? is this so we can introduce june? jesus guys
all in all a much worse episode than episode 2. i felt like they realized how much plot they had to get through and started cramming whatever they could into this episode

The opening monologue is done by Kyoshi.
I dislike this move because we now see the war from the avatar's perspective and not the people who have had to live it these past 100 years.... showing it to us through Katara let's us immediately empathize with her and Sokka.
Kyoshi is also two avatars back? Why not have Roku do the opening then since he is tied to the issue.

Ah, I see the change with Ozai. Though I would say it is not necessarily the case that he intentionally puts his children against each other as a strategy to push them - maybe he just switches who he considers the golden child based on who impressed him most recently.

generally not impressed by the Netflix ATLA soundtrack, but the Kyoshi Island music profile is INSPIRED, big fan of the female choir addition

What do you mean the "Leaves from the Vine" instrumental was playing the in background during Lu Ten's funeral 😭😭 and then again when Iroh joined Zuko in exile. 😭😭

i love that they lean so hard into the “zuko is an art/theatre kid” angle in the netflix show. he keeps a commonplace book with sketches and paintings, he has handmade art all over his walls, he grabs little costumes at every opportunity, and talks about the pros and cons of calligraphy brushes with aang, what a guy

ok update on atla netflix: started final episode, it opens with the attack on the north. its pretty freaking great. frame for frame accurate w the show, and (other than some so so costuming choices, or a few fight-bending scenes with lower budgets) the only changes so far have been for the better
its- wow
its good
katara needs to go apeshit have have some more backbone fr, yue's costuming is god awful im so sorry amber midthunder queen you deserved better, and the overall customing for the northern watertribe is giving lowkey halloween/live action fmab but everything else??? top tier

Finished watching the show! If I wasn't a die-hard fan of the original, I would've absolutely adored this show. As it stands, I still really really like it! I might even give it another watch.
Although some cuts and writing changes confused me, I thought they did well enough with 8 episodes. Katara was cute, Aang was so tinyyy, and Sokka was my favorite character 🤡 I knew I would like him despite my disappointment with the casting, but I didn't expect him to come out and be my favorite part of the show again. I just hope Mr. Ousley has been staying off social media.
Other castings were good to middling. King Bumi was spot on, weird as always. Roku was Not Very Good. Kuruk was perfect and Kyoshi was pretty good. The casting for the Mechanist and his son was good, I just didn't like their personality changes. I didn't see why Mai and Ty Lee had to be in this season but they were okay, acting wise. Gran Gran,,, that's someone else's Gran Gran. Hakoda and Bato were perfect 🧎‍♂️ no notes
Zuko's casting was everything it needed to be and more. I came out loving Zuko even more than I did before 🥹 like really, my hats off to him, he destroyed the role. Uncle Iroh was nice, and that orchestral version of Leaves On the Vine made me want to curl up into a ball.
I enjoyed the extra characters. I liked that there was no toxic rivalry between Sokka and Yue's betrothed. Suki's mom was an interesting addition, I think. Gyatso being so much more prominent was a choice. Azula's presence didn't really do anything for me, and Admiral Zhao was just as unlikable as he was originally.
I'd love to see some art where the original animated characters say lines from the live action. I thought the writing for Katara and Aang was so-so, but the writing really stood out for Sokka. The only thing was that his romances with Suki and Yue were...well, not that interesting. They made Suki a Weird Girl™ and Yue's actress just didn't have much to work with. Zuko got meh lines but the actor sold them.
Another thing I liked: no Kataang romance! We got The Secret Tunnel song and Chong without having to deal with the awkwardness of Aang crushing on someone that looks like his babysitter 😭 8/10 for that writing choice alone.
There's a lot more but in general, I did like it. There are flaws and leaps in logic and watered down traits but it's okay. I can't wait to see Toph next season.
