2024 UPDATE (OFFICIAL)

Hey, everyone. Longtime no talk. Despite being weirdly active on this account, I haven't really made any textposts since high school. So I've decided to fix this by giving a gigantic update post about my very busy 2023. If you're new and don't know anything about me, or knew me as a teen and are wondering what I'm up to now: buckle up.

TL;DR:

Dropped out of art school. Released an award-nominated(???) dating sim, ValiDate. Killed the Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX. Conquered Jaw Explosion Disease. Hung out with some friends. (Also, a lot of NDA shit that I can’t talk about.)

ART-SCHOOL DROPOUT

From 2021 to 2022, I was attending a prestigious and overly-expensive art school for their (brand new!) game design program. When I first graduated from high school, this college was my dream choice, and coming off the success of my early game dev career, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to polish my skills while I kept working on the side. My first commercial game was still in development, but we were feeling comfortable, and I felt like getting greedy.

Pride before the fall. Full Icarus mode. You know how it goes.

The school itself was…alright. Satellite campus, mid-pandemic, hybrid learning. Close enough to commute comfortably, classes just long enough for masks to not give me a headache, and the handful of remote courses helped keep my medical problems at bay. Problems that the school was a little unequipped to help with, though the disability office did their best. I had to drop a class because my body, at the time, couldn’t handle eight hours of classes without some Crazy Side Effects.

(Keep in mind that every class was, minimum, four hours. And I had to take at least five a semester. Each class also saw me make an entire game from scratch. My body was already at its limit.)

If you knew me in high school, you’re probably waiting for the shoe to drop: I was, famously, the worst at academics. Never did homework, rarely finished projects, slept through first period at least once a week. Surprise, though: I was fucking great at this. My GPA doubled. Turns out that going to school for a discipline you already have a career in, and are kinda obsessed with, kinda does wonders for you. Unfortunately, I picked the worst time to care about school, since my commercial game’s release was the same exact night that my five school games were due.

TL;DR, I didn’t sleep for a week, almost fucked both up, and got burnout so bad that I couldn’t do anything for a calendar year. So I dropped out! Now, about a year of job hunting later (the game’s industry is imploding right now, and the only studios that considered me were… questionable, to say the least), the expensive art school wants me back. So badly. Turns out the whole school is so broke and understaffed right now that they’re basically chomping at the bit for that tuition money. Got a week to decide. Jury’s still out.

VALIDATE POST-MORTEM

So, if you couldn’t tell from the above section, we released a game in 2022! I was supposed to write a post-mortem for it, but… burnout from the above, combined with general “post-release depression,” and I didn’t feel like touching it.

Part of me still doesn’t!

Yet I kinda think the feeling of me not wanting to talk about ValiDate is still worth discussing, so here we go:

For those of you that aren’t aware, I was a head dev on ValiDate, a dating sim that released in 2022. Volume 1 (of 3) did, anyway.

Did a lot of music, did a lot of writing, created some characters people really care about, created some characters people really want to fuck, made a couple Tweets that my boss hated, got accused of being reverse racist a few times. It was truly one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. And, yes, we’re still working on Vol. 2 behind the scenes.

That’s actually the reason why it’s kinda hard to talk about Vol. 1!

It was my first commercial game, my first publicly released game, and I think there’s always gonna be a… natural embarrassment toward your first “real” project. Combine that with my natural “if you stare at me for too long, I will kill myself” tendencies, and the game’s release was a special type of torture. It’s one thing to watch people play through a game that you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into, knowing full well that they might hate it (or just misunderstand it), but shit gets so much worse when you know that you could have done better.

It’s a very special kind of psychological torture to have creative decisions you feel were mistakes, things you half-assed because of burnout or deadlines, or things you did wrong because you just didn’t know any better! The embarrassment was overwhelming, so I just… dipped for a while. Didn’t watch gameplay or read reviews, didn’t do much of anything.

Took me a while to realize that me being embarrassed about the project isn’t because ValiDate was bad or anything. I was embarrassed because it was an incredible learning opportunity for me. The amount that I picked up on game design, community management, leadership, marketing, pitching, porting, etc. in two years is more than any school could teach you in four. Volume 1 was a game made by amateurs, still wet behind the ears, trying to build something from grassroots.

But Volume 2 is a game-ass game.

And having done all the work we have on Vol. 2 (which, while I can’t talk about it publicly, is a lot!), looking back at our first release feels like… revisiting your awkward middle school photos. Sometimes it’s hard to not feel contempt for who you were when your biggest struggle was becoming, but learning to choke down that shame? It taught me to feel grateful for the you of yesterday, who clawed their way through uncertainty so that you, today, can stand on sturdier ground. Growing up is embarrassing, and it turns out you keep doing it well into your twenties! Sucks.

For the past few days, Dani and I have been watching a Twitch streamer play through Volume 1. We’ve been so deep in planning for the future that we figured, hey, may as well revisit the past. Detached from all that embarrassment of becoming, I gotta admit: we made a fun little dating sim. People like it. Hell, I like it. Sure, I know all of its flaws and shortcuts, and I have my fair share of critiques… but fact of the matter is, if I have a problem with something, I can just fix it.

Admittedly, In the past, that attitude of mine has actually been more of a problem than a solution. “I can fix this myself!” is all fine and good when you’re a solo dev trying to throw something together, but it turns out taking on excess responsibility in a collaborative setting is a way to make shit suck for you and your team. During the Kickstarter demo era, I was literally on every team besides art. Writing, programming, music, I got my fingers in all those pies. It was fun to me, and more importantly, it was sustainable.

Until it wasn’t.

Volume 1 coinciding with my tenure at [art school], using a (finicky and, frankly, shitty) new game engine, being much larger in scope, introducing minigames (which, surprise, I was team lead on)... I pretty much killed myself trying to get it all done. Honestly, I blame half of our day-one bugfixes on me specifically. Every single one of them was an oversight made because I was pulling the classic “I’m unmedicated so crunching is the only way I can feel alive” type shit.

Except for the OST. That one sucked because art school sucks all the joy out of creating.

Happy to say that our workflow for Volume 2 has been much more sustainable for me, even if I’ve officially broken my “no art” rule for it. Yeah, turns out I’m finally making use of that animation major. Sucks.

Self reflection over. Except for one last note:

If you’ve followed ValiDate, played our demo, donated to the Kickstarter, replied to our Tweets, played our second demo, bought our game, or just talked about us to a friend… I am so, so grateful. Beyond what words could possibly describe. It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember become a game developer, and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you guys. Vd8 wasn’t what I expected the cornerstone of my career to be, but honestly? I couldn’t have asked for a better one. We have Vriska in our game. How many people can possibly say that?

And to those of you still waiting for Volume 2:

You haven’t seen anything yet.

GAYMING AWARDS

Speaking of ValiDate… Did you hear we were nominated for some Gayming Awards last year? We were!

Three other head Vd8 devs (Dani: Production, Alexis: Art, Cam: Code) flew out to beautiful New York City for the award show last March, which was actually our first time actually meeting up IRL. Really funny how I’ve known Dani since I was fifteen, but here we were, a decade later, finally meeting face to face. She’s so much taller in person. I’m still taller, but barely.

Meeting up with internet friends is one thing (and more on that later!), but meeting up with internet coworkers? It’s interesting. This was the first moment that ValiDate felt “real,” seeing as it was suddenly important enough to give us comp’d flights and a hotel room, but more than that: the people I’ve been working with for years exist? We’re all hanging out together? We’re wandering through Manhattan all day? We’re eating the most disgusting food at Junior’s in Times Square? We’re trying to figure out what this mystery liquid is? How much did this food cost again? (Seriously, my onion rings were 90% dough and 10% onion.)

While I won’t bore you with the minutiae—I think my friends would prefer the privacy anyway—the entire trip to NYC was fun, exhausting, and a dream-come-true.

Except for that goddamn award show. Jesus CHRIST, what a trainwreck.

No, I’m not saying that just because we lost. We did lose, though. (Personally, I was fine with it, but I also had to travel the least distance to get there. So…) I’m saying that because the entire Gayming Awards industrial complex was, uh, kinda busted this year?

So imagine, you’re us: bunch of twenty-somethings on your Sex and the City shit. Big award show tonight, formal attire. We’re talking high heels, long dresses, full suits, the whole nine yards. Now what do you do in Manhattan? Walk. Sure, we weren’t walking in formal attire the entire time, but it was still a good five blocks to the award center where—wait, what do you mean they relocated the ceremony? The hall they rented is closed for mysterious reasons? Where the hell are we doing the award show?

If you answered “the drag bar where the afterparty was supposed to take place,” congrats, here’s $20. Way further away from our hotel, which meant more walking, and also a way smaller venue with a lot less… formality, let’s say. But we’re young gay people, we don’t care about formalities, who gives a shit! As long as it can seat all of us, then—oh there’s no seating. Ohhhh. Oh! Okay.

I’ll admit, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. There were a handful of couches, VIPs only. Realizing quickly that, oh shit, we’re VIPs, we managed to snag some front-seat couches before any of the pesky old people could. (We’re young! We deserve to sit! You’ve had your entire lives to sit, established games industry people! Let the new generation have a turn!) Unfortunately, when I got up to cash in my free-drink voucher, my seat was stolen by some white lady.

So I sat on the floor.

March 2023. You, sitting at home, have decided to tune into the Gayming Awards “live” on Twitch, curious to see what Britain’s premiere gayming magazine had to say about, uh, esports.

This is important to you.

Fortunately, this year you’re watching a decently shot and scripted award show filmed in a (noticeably claustrophobic) little bar, complete with charming presenters (many of whom are local drag queens) and a myriad of corporate sponsors. You can hardly tell that the entire show was uprooted and moved hours prior!

Yet, for some reason, whenever the cameras cut to the audience… There’s some large man, right in front of the crowd, slumped down on the floor as if he’s bleeding out. With every award given, his clapping grows weaker. The more the camera cuts to him, the more life drains from his body, as if his existence itself is anathema to “gayming.”

Imagine, for a moment, that this man is nominated for an award.

Imagine that he, after a lifetime of potassium deficiency, has been teetering on the edge of a Charlie Horse Reckoning for hours.

Imagine that the microsecond that his game’s name is called as a nominee, the Reckoning begins.

Now imagine a world where he wins that award.

A world where he is forced to stand—from his corpse’s rightful place on the ground!—in front of his peers and superiors, pretending as if he’s not afflicted with a life-ending muscle cramp.

So, yeah. I was pretty fine with losing.

Later, we ditched the “afterparty” to drink at Applebees. (Turns out “green tea shots” don’t have any green tea in ‘em?)

EULOGY FOR THE GOLDEN GIRLS TAKE MANHATTAN DX

Big announcement! I was a team lead on The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX, a certified Tumblr Gold™ fan-project (by the immortal Grawly) about the eponymous Gold Girls in a Persona-esque parody game!

Slightly bigger announcement! The game got cancelled. Sorry.

Feels a little weird talking about this, since the year-ish I spent working on the game passed in the blink of an eye, and I’m not going to lie and say that I was an instrumental piece of the team or whatever. I was lucky enough to lead a very talented team, and to play with some very fun devtools, but the game was definitely more important to me than I was to it. (Grawly, if by some off-chance you’re reading this, please click off now. You can peek back in at the Jaw Explosion Disease subheader. I promise I’m very nice and respectful.)

I was in high school when I was first made aware of TGGTMDX. My friend group was very into Persona (in the pre-P5 days), and one of our favorite video subgenres was “videogame UI on top of sitcom scenes.” It didn’t take us long to stumble onto early-build footage of TGGTMDX on Tumblr, and what spawned was a years-long fascination. I’d even consider it one of my many… game dev awakenings? The idea that the only thing stopping me from making “American Persona”—one of my many white whales—was commitment to the bit. Just one of the many things that fueled my teenaged suicidal overconfidence.

Speaking of suicidal overconfidence, about a decade later, I was invited to work on the game! Coming fresh off ValiDate, I was desperate for a chance to make a real portfolio piece (visual novels, while popular, will never get you a job), and this sort of opportunity only presents itself once in a lifetime. Fulfilling a teenage dream while furthering your career? What could possibly go wrong!

That makes it seem like there was some explosive drama behind the scenes that ruined everything. Sorry to say that most game cancellations aren’t that exciting, and that this game’s death was by a thousand microscopic cuts. Most of which are not my place to talk about: this game wasn’t my baby, and cancelling it wasn’t my choice to make! Many people worked on this for much, much longer than I even knew how to code, and they deserve to have their feelings prioritized. Whenever that post mortem gets published, I’ll be the first to reblog it, trust me.

Instead, I’d prefer to talk a little about this as being my first real “loss” as a game dev. Certainly not my first project to go under, and I’ve had my fair share of shelved prototypes, but something about this cancellation was… different. Working on your dream project is all fun and games until you feel partially responsible for it dying, y’know? It felt Sisyphean at a point, like trying to dig a hole in the sand with a pitchfork. I would work at the game, and work at the game, but nothing I did felt like it made a dent.

Part of me knew I wasn’t giving it my all, between the school-based burnout (above), jaw explosion disease (below), and ValiDate (omnipresent), it’s not like I could’ve afforded to put more of myself into it. Besides, I was literally a team lead, half my job was telling other people what to do. But the spectre of “you’re not doing enough” was hard to shake. Even when all these other responsibilities ebbed and I could afford to give this game my all, the difference felt minimal.

We spend a lot of time pitying Sisyphus for having to push that boulder uphill over and over, but none of us ask ourselves “could we even move that big fucking rock in the first place?” Apparently, I couldn’t.

I wasn’t the only one that felt that way, it turned out. In fact, pretty much all the friends I made on the project felt the same. If there’s any “real” reason why the project got cancelled, it’s that. No big falling out, Disney didn’t give us a cease and desist, no secret rebrand going on in the background. Just a bunch of lads getting sick of pushing a boulder. Hell, Grawly’s been doing it for a decade. Let him rest.

Not too much rest, though: we’re already working on a different game together (Date Knight: check it out if you haven’t!), and some of us ex-Golden Girls devs have some ideas for what else we can cook up.

For money, this time.

JAW EXPLOSION DISEASE

Probably the biggest “development” of 2023 was my sudden horrible nerve pain in July, which started as a sinus infection on the left side of my face, and soon became a horrific jaw pain. Long after my sinus infection healed, the jaw pain remained, which is a pretty bad hand to draw when a considerable portion of your day is spent “talking,” or “eating.” So, for the back half of 2023, I didn’t do much of either.

Instead, I had to take a considerable amount of ibuprofen, visit one doctor, three dentists, two hospitals, and four oral surgeons to figure out what the hell is wrong with me. The dentists discovered an exposed nerve, caused by wisdom tooth removal complications (sick!), the oral surgeons went “okay, we can fix that,” got me all numbed up. But it turns out that my left jaw is immune to local anesthesia! Thinking this was an infection, they kept putting me on antibiotics over and over in the hopes that it’d suddenly work. Took a note from my childhood dentist explaining that, “no, he’s always been like this” to find a surgeon willing to put me all the way under. (And then, the first time they tried, I woke up in the middle anyway! I got a full refund on the copay, at least.)

Ultimately, I found a very nice surgeon in December that treated me same-day, and did it perfectly, but the damage to my liver from all that ibuprofen was… bad. But it turns out that livers just… regenerate naturally? So, give it a few months, I’ll be at 100%. Hopefully.

OOMFCON

Hilariously, six months after we met up for the Gayming Awards, Dani and Alexis found their way back to NYC for a little combination meet-up/vacation we affectionately titled “Oomfcon 2023.” This time, with bonus friends! Our entire friend server, whose name I’ve been advised not to post publicly, had rented an AirBnB for anyone willing to drop everything and go to Brooklyn.

It took about a year of planning (mostly by Alexis) to get us all out there, but Jesus Christ, it actually worked.

Admittedly I’m a bit hesitant to talk at length about “taking a vacation”—even though I’m already… from here?—but it really was the highlight of my year. First for actually happening, when most friend groups I’ve had would have written the idea off as a pipedream, but mostly for being a really good time. A lot of walking, a lot of talking, a lot of drinking, a lot of dining. (This was during Jaw Explosion Disease, so you can imagine how my body took most of that.)

To Dani, Alexis, Miles, Haven, Grim, Xtine, and Ty: thanks for coming up here! The city is a lot more boring without you guys in it. I promise to have less health issues when we do this again!

And to everyone else outside the groupchat that I met and bored with my job hunt stories: Nice meeting you guys! Sorry that fate decided every single one of you is forced to keep in touch with me. (And I didn’t even get the shitty corporate job!)

Very preliminary and speculatory writing of Midnights timeline

Disclaimer: All the exact dates are based on tracking Taylor's private jets, which is a controversial activity (to say the least). Those are sourced from @youareinlovees' detailed masterposts.

Aaron Dessner confirmed that High Infidelity and Would've, Could've, Should've were written and recorded during Grammys week in March 2021. Since Taylor was in LA between March 7th and March 15th only, we can safely assume that those songs were written within that period.

The Great War and Hits Different were probably written before Jack Antonoff became the main co-writer of Midnights, because (according to Dessner in the podcast above) that signified a change in concept, but they probably also weren't written in March 2021 since Dessner mentioned them separately.

According to Taylor, most Taylor/Antonoff co-writes were written in New York, when JA and Jack's fiance were filming in Panama. This means they were written between November 22nd, when Taylor flew back from Panama to New York, and December 16th, when Taylor flew to Panama.

According to Rolling Stone, Lavender Haze and Glitch came out of a session where Jack Antonoff, Sounwave, Sam Dew and Zoe Kravitz worked on Zoe's debut album. This was before Jack started working on Midnights (so before November 2021), but also Jack only sent those tracks (demos?) a few months later, which might put the date around late 2021/early 2022.

Also in the same article, Karma was a "last-minute Hail Mary"-- wouldn't be surprised if it was the last song to be written on the album.

Sweet Nothing mentions a trip to Ireland "last July", i.e. July 2021, which probably implies the song was written in 2022. Additionally, on 19 April 2022, JA did an interview where he mentioned he didn't intend to write any more songs under a pseudonym, which either means 1. he signed an NDA or 2. he had already written Sweet Nothing at this point. For wishful thinking purposes I will assume the latter.

Snow On The Beach, which was co-written with Lana Del Rey, was finished by 4 April 2022, as on that day Lana posted this photo on her Instagram, a colourized version of which was later included in this Instagram post.

Now on to the solo writes: Vigilante Shit is a mystery. It mentions Scooter Braun's ex-wife so that puts it after July 2021, but that's it. Maybe she saw the news of Scooter getting a divorce and cackled manically? (also I don't think the FBI line points to anything concrete-- more of a revenge fantasy than anything IMO)

Bigger Than The Whole Sky is also a mystery, but if you believe that it's about Claire Winter then that would place it after March 2022.

You're Losing Me... um... I really don't know? I think there is a possibility it was written along with most of Midnights in that Nov-Dec 2021 session, especially since JA was in a different country then, but it also could have literally been written last month and we would be none the wiser. Here I'm going to give Taylor the benefit of the doubt. Also Hits Different is a breakup anthem but we don't talk about that...

Midnights was most likely finished by May at the latest, when she quoted a lyric from Labyrinth in her NYU speech and may or may not have teased the name of the album in this Instagram post.

Secret Invasion theories & coming back down to reality (re: Maria Hill) -- spoilers!

BUT before I get into some self grounding on my Maria revival theory, here’s a little more Maria Hill hair appreciation.

I love the chaotic look of her hair in this scene, her hair really says “she was working in Russia all day as her cool secret agent self chasing bad guys or whatever and then she’s finally driving to her secret safe house to go home and take a shower and then freaking Ross calls. Surprise, some how he is also in Russia and that’s not weird and is totally normal and makes sense and he has Maria on speed dial for reasons we don’t know why. But here she comes to rescue some man AGAIN before her day can be over, but then that man dies on the ground in front of her and turns into an alien. Surprise! And then another alien friend is around and they just leave together and leave skrull Ross’s dead body on the ground exposed as an alien in Russia... and they never tell anyone about this except probably Fury (not confirmed) and it never comes up again and then she can’t even go take a shower because now she has to go pick up Fury from space.” That’s definitely what this hair says, and major props to the hair department because they nailed that look to complete perfection!

Anyways, as the finale looms I am afraid I may have hyped myself up (and potentially hyped up others) too much on the outcome of the show. I still think my Maria + Fury made a huge play would be the BEST AND MOST FUN outcome of the whole series and since there have been zero freaking twists I think it’s necessary now but I don’t want to give anyone false hope or make the Maria stans sad all over again. Also, Marvel has been so afraid to slay in this series or take any risks or do anything new. I just don’t get it. It could have been so good!!!

So just to remain grounded after my spiraling out last week over why Maria is probably still alive--which some other outlets think so too FINALLY (!!) but here’s the evidence that Maria Hill is dead for real and not coming back:

She died on screen and she was very very dead and she died in a very sad horrible emotional way that should devastate any human being (except not Fury apparently?) and they cast her mom to guilt trip Fury. And then they keep showing that death over and over and over again. And killing off a woman for a man’s storyline is a classic trope that for some reason Marvel thinks is risky? (TBH I think the killed off Maria because they didn’t want to pay Cobie her money in any future projects and get someone younger + cheaper)

Cobie did a bunch of interviews saying “She thinks this is it” “it looks real, it felt real, it felt different” and “it was a sad day” and she was “sad to never get to develop Maria further” and that Maria was really dead. I think doing this interview was a bummer because it could have left the mystery open for the rest of the series but my guess is Marvel said go do this interview which is annoying because there actually is a great set up for Maria to come back into the show at the end.

Cobie posted a good bye to Maria on IG after episode 2 which was later deleted.

Cobie “knows nothing about [being in the Marvels]” which was at least in part filmed around the same time as SI was filming! Around 2021 but some of the SI was filming in 2022 for sure! If some of the Marvels is before SI I am not sure why it would be a secret that Cobie was in it? But who knows, the NDAs are wild but also I don’t know if Cobie would do a whole “i think this is it” interview set if she was for sure coming back.

Cobie got paid 4 million for her 1 episode (and many outstanding Guest Star appearances where she died over and over from different angles for 2 seconds, give this woman an Emmy!) I think if it was her last Marvel gig and she knew she wasn’t coming back she’d probably ask for a solid pay day which she seems like she got. Don Cheadle got 2 million for the whole show and Emilia Clarke only got 750k for the entire series and this was all behind Sam’s 20 million!!

Also Cobie said she had scenes at the same time as Don. I keep linking to this clip because it gives me hope we will have more Maria content in the show at least in some way THAT BETTER NOT BE A DEAD BODY. But I guess to totally destroy my last inch of hope it’s possible they were just on set at the same time even if they didn’t have scenes at the same time and that’s why they hung out? ALTHOUGH counter point she did say “i had a lot of scenes at the same time as Don” not “we were on set together at the same time.”

Two days after Act 3 was announced to be in development, James Roach said that he was back for a few tracks. This was seven months before his music update in January of this year. A day after the music update, however, someone on Twitter asked James if Hiveswap isn’t canceled, to which he replied, “Ah, you caught me, it is actually.” I found this concerning, but also a bit confusing, considering that A) James gave updates for the game’s music the day before, B) his Tweets about them each have a million likes (moreso than the Tweet about the cancelation), and C) James replied to one of the Twitter users telling him to add the Touhou trumpet in Act 3 with a “Saluting Face Emoji”.

There was another person on Twitter who said that he could not see the music updates for Act 3 because he is still blocked by him for calling him names two years ago in 2021. Interesting news today, CC, Pt 2. Another DM article entitled "Harry and Meghan are accused of trying to GAG teachers and students at NYC school they visited in 2021 'by prohibiting them from making negative social media posts now or in the future'." Meghan is having her Archewell advisors demand "the school sign a clause which banned anyone from making negative comments, according to The Sun." I say "tough sh*t." The Parkles don't want bad publicity, then they should stop acting like asshats.

Isn't that against American law? You can't force someone to sign a NDA, let alone two years after the event (Edit: It appears the attempt at NDAs was at the time of the visit). I can see the Harkles trying to intimidate the teachers and students at the school like that, but I hope the teachers and students have a right to say No. It makes me wonder what the Harkles are trying to cover up.

Physical abuse/domestic violence and anger management issues. She’s been laying the groundwork since the engagement in 2017.

2017 - First Tom Markle made the comment shortly after the engagement was announced about how he made Harry promise not to hurt Meghan. It was a really strange one-off comment that raised a lot of flags.

2018 - Next the whole estrangement from Tom. Yes, it was “because” he talked to the press and she’s deeply concerned for her privacy but Meghan can easily flip it to “they made me cut you off and threatened me if I didn’t.”

2019 - “not many people have asked me if I’m okay”. Sure, it was in the context of motherhood and postpartum depression, but how easy it’d be to spin it as “people knew about Harry’s temper and no one cared what he was doing to me.”

2020 - There was the whole thing in Finding Freedom about how Meghan’s the only person who can calm Harry down when he gets raging angry because everyone else is fearful of him. She’s scared of him too but she loves him and can put her fear aside to help him.

2021 - Then the Oprah interview, where she said the royals took her passport, keys, identification papers, and refused to allow her to make her own money. Both are classic signs of abusers, making their victims totally dependent on them.

2022 - Then there was their time spent in the UK around The Queen’s passing prior to the funeral - Meghan’s cronies have pretty much said that Meghan felt like a trapped hostage because she wasn’t allowed to go out anywhere and had to stay at FC.

Even more recently, there’s been gossip on Reddit that a) Harry had been forcibly removed from the household and involuntarily sent to rehab and b) something happened to Archie at school that prompted CPS investigations. Obviously it’s Reddit and take with a hefty dose of salt but the thing about Meghan and narcs is that they’ll take any sort of gossip as long as they can spin it to work in their favor.

And finally the threat about not having signed a NDA and finding her old journals in one of the interviews. It more or less suggests she witnessed or experienced something unsavory. She can absolutely spin that to mean Harry’s temper (or the tempers of other royals).

1. The rumors I saw on Reddit regarding rehab didn’t seem legit. Seems more like Meghan trying to start rumors to make him look bad. Which, again, falls under the “tell me they’re acrimoniously separating without telling me they’re acrimoniously separated” variety.

2. I’ve read the specific comments about Archie and the person who shared that gossip was very clear that CPS was not called. It was Archie’s school who realized that they weren’t “equipped” to handle a small child with such severe anxiety and attachment issues. The school has a person working with Meghan and Harry to help Archie get better. CPS wasn’t involved in that stage. However, if Meghan and Harry--although, it was commented that Meghan seemed to be more of the problem with her control freak issues--don’t work to improve things, CPS could be contacted in the future. Just hasn’t happened yet.

3. The one-off Thomas Markle comment allegedly originated because Meghan told her mother, Doria, that she was divorcing Trevor because he got “physical” with her. Doria told Thomas. That was one of Meghan’s lies to get out of that marriage and move on.

4. No one is going to believe Meghan saying the BRF forced her to cut off her own family. It’s just not believable at this point, particularly after the Oprah interview.

5. The big problem with Meghan is that she can’t keep track of her lies. She just keeps putting out more when the best option would be to keep her mouth shut. Just like what she does with pr, she’s way past the point of over-saturation. People do not care for her in the US. The only ones who do are her crazy squad members. She is a niche market that has over sold herself by the truckload.

I don’t worry too much about any physical abuse or domestic violence accusations because she’s too dumb to pull it off right now. Also, there are too many witnesses in her household. How many nannies do the kids have? In any kind of legal investigation, they would be questioned extensively. Those nannies & other staff could, in fact, give a lot of information to charge her for domestic abuse, if the rumors are true about her yelling, tantrums, throwing objects, and hitting Harry.

Oh, and let’s not forget about all the rumored recordings of her behavior that exist. I have no doubt that at least one of those will hit the internet post-announcement.

What we know about Jackdaw so far

(EDIT Jan 21, 2023: This piece has been updated to include a little bit of new information as Jenna Coleman made her first media confirmation of the new movie in her recent Telegraph interview)

So, as Jenna Coleman begins what will hopefully be a successful run in the play Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons (stream please, National Theatre Live) my thoughts turn to a rather mysterious project she was involved in just before Christmas - somehow as she was in the midst of rehearsals for the play. Jackdaw - as the project has been referred, though this may not be the final title - has had only scant regional media coverage and I admit that if not for that scant coverage I would be starting to wonder if this project was real or some sort of nethoax like a certain alleged lost film Tumblr was on about for a while in the fall.

Since there have been numerous posts on the topic here in recent weeks (mostly by @oswincoleman who has done an amazing job keeping track), I thought I’d try and distil what major information is known (or not known) about this film so far. Spoiler break for length.

1. As I said, it is not known if Jackdaw is the official name, or a working title, or some sort of cover title like “Blue Harvest” disguised the filming of Return of the Jedi; but that would have to mean “Jackdaw” is connected to some major enterprise, which it doesn’t appear to be. Although I saw someone ask if maybe this was connected to Sandman coming a few months after its renewal by Netflix (and Netflix allegedly being connected to Jackdaw, not to mention a comics-accurate hair-colour change by Jenna), there’s no sign of any connection to Sandman or any other franchise (Mason Alexander Park of Sandman said the other day they don’t expect to resume filming till the summer); and despite the director having worked on Doctor Who before, there’s been nothing to suggest it’s related in anyway to that either (and they’d be talking Disney+ or BBC not Netflix if it was).

2. As of mid-January, all we have heard about it is from social media posts and a few “what are they filming?”-style stories on local/regional news sites, plus a casting call for extras that was posted in December. Recent major media coverage of Jenna - including about her hair colour change - have made no reference to the project.

3. Jenna herself has only made reference to this production by way of a couple of enigmatic Instagram Stories posts, one showing a motorcycle, another showing camera equipment. According to social media, she filmed her role over the course of about a week or so in mid-December. Despite this, people purporting to be insiders on the production have claimed she has a major role in it. Speculation is she might go back to film more after the play wraps. But social media reports filming on Jackdaw wrapped in mid-January. Filming apparently took place in the north of England, including Hartlepool.

3.5. Interestingly, Jenna has made no reference to the film in recent interviews, including the one with Graham Norton who surely must have been aware of the social media reports if nothing else; even when she was under her NDA for Sandman back in 2021 she was at least still able to acknowledge she was filming “something” recently even if she couldn’t say what. Jackdaw does not seem to something on the scale of a Marvel movie, so I can’t see her not being allowed to at least acknowledge the film - unless maybe the producers of the Lemons play asked her not to, perhaps so as not to take away from the play. To be fair, if you’re promoting a specific event it wouldn’t do to spend the limited time available talking about Jackdaw, Wilderness, Sandman S2, Klokkenluider, War Rooms... right?

5. Who is involved in Jackdaw? Other than Jenna, it appears the lead actor is one Thomas Turgoose, known for the This is England films and TV series in the UK (an unknown to me; he was in one of the Kingsmen films too; I see Jenna also began following him on Instagram at some point). A casting call for a scene suggested Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jenna’s co-star in the upcoming Wilderness, is also in it but I haven’t seen much more on that. And Jenna reportedly has a stunt double. Personnel from The Sandman are also involved such as the cinematographer as well as the director is reportedly Jamie Childs, Jenna’s current boyfriend who directed her main episode of SM. If reports are accurate it makes this an interesting hybrid of her most recent TV projects.

6. Around the time of filming, as we know, Jenna dyed her hair a bright blonde, a look she debuted at an event she found time to attend just before the holidays. It is not yet known if she did it for the film, for the play (as she’s kept it and yellowish hair for a play called Lemons, etc., makes sense), or both. Or maybe she just decided to go blonde. The fact she’s still dark-haired on the posters for the play suggests it was a decision made after the initial publicity photo shoots for the play were done.

6.5 Surprisingly, Jenna didn’t make an Instagram post about changing her hair colour. Indeed, except for a couple of play-related posts and one set of pics taken while preparing for a pre-blonde event, she was all but radio silent on Instagram during December (she didn’t do a year in review for Instagram Stories either, nor did she post anything related to the event she attended where she unveiled the new hairdo). Which does make sense if she was shooting a movie, commuting, preparing for the play, etc.

7. There’s apparently a rave sequence in the film with police (including apparently riot cops, at least based on the casting call), for which some photos from the set have emerged. Jenna, as noted, apparently has a stunt double possibly related to motorcycle riding?

8. Social media have said this is a film being made for Netflix, but Netflix has yet to make any announcement regarding such a production. Obviously, no hints of a release date have come out (and remembering the long wait for a release on Klokkenluider, scenes for which Jenna filmed 2 years ago, it may be a while). According to the social media reports, this is a feature-length film, not a short, intended for cinemas.

I’m sure I missed a few (and likely made some mistakes too) but these are the major bullet points as I understand them. Despite claims of Jenna having a major role in the show, I’m a little skeptical given how little time she appears to have spent filming (and the fact she squeezed this in while in the midst of rehearsals for the play). The fact we have a pretty clear indication of when she went blonde (between her event in early December with dark hair, followed a couple weeks later by her attending an event with blonde hair), I don’t think it’s a case of her having done more filming earlier that we don’t know about (unless she changes hair colour during the film ).

My gut is telling me it’ll be the same as Klokkenluider, for which Jenna indeed plays a major role but according to reviews does not actually appear throughout the film. In Jackdaw, Jenna could be playing a major role - but one that only involves her in a few scenes. Time will tell. And until or unless someone - production company, one of the actors, Netflix - actually releases some sort of info, we’re stuck for now with speculation, guesswork and Instagram posts.

Update: January 21, 2023: Jenna Coleman was the subject of a major interview with the Daily Telegraph magazine. The article is behind a paywall, but it does confirm that Jenna did film a movie called Jackdaw, dyed her hair for the film, and apparently plays a “pixie punk biker” in the movie. The plot thickens!

Aaliyah & Her Family Were Silenced By R. Kelly Following Marriage Annulment

Aaliyah was one of R. Kelly'smost high-profile victims in the '90s. Yet, neither the late singer or her family could speak out about the abuse she suffered due to a non-disclosure agreement Kelly forced her family to sign. In the final installments of Lifetime's Surviving R. Kelly, which aired January 2 and January 3, Aaliyah was revealed as Jane Doe #1 who was mentioned throughout Kelly's federal trial in New York last year. The docuseries followed the trial and centered around the teenage singer's inappropriate relationship with Kelly, who was 27 when he worked on her debut album Age Ain't Nothin But A Number.

According to Variety, Kelly and Aaliyah secretly got married in 1994. The singer was only 15, but their marriage certificate was altered to say she was 18. Her family declined to be interviewed for the show, but Kelly's former security and childhood friend Gem Pratt opened up about his knowledge of the situation. Pratt said that Aaliyah's father did not approve of their relationship and forced them to get the marriage annulled. The only reason statutory rape charges weren't filed against Kelly at the time is because he made a contractual agreement with Aaliyah's family. As part of the deal, Kelly sold the rights to his first three albums to her family. “[Aaliyah's] dad didn’t want her anywhere near him,” Pratt said in the docuseries. Kelly's NDA with Aaliyah and her family was mentioned in his New York trial in 2021. Aaliyah's name was first brought up in the opening statements of the trial when Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez re-told the story of how Kelly met the singer when she was 12 years old and began engaging in sexual acts with her, which last several years. Melendez also alleged that it was a pregnancy scare that encouraged Kelly to devise a plan to marry Aaliyah to avoid facing criminal charges. In the docuseries, Pratt said that Kelly couldn't have made that plan or abused other victims without help. “He couldn’t do this by himself," Pratt said. "It’s impossible…It’s clear as day there were enablers." “This was not a one-man operation," he added. "Most people in that camp knew that a lot of these girls were underage. They had to.” R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence in prison after he was found guilty of all charges.

Way back around middle school, I began to realize my deep need to be feminine, and I fought it every day, even wearing oversized clothes to hide my slender frame because i "shouldnt" be feminine. Apa-apa yang diperjuangkan akan sampai, ternyata memang benar adanya.

4 Juli, sehabis isya aku membuka akun ku. Kakak menelepon untuk segera buka akun dan meminta password ku, kakaknya siap jadi relawan untuk membuka pengumumanku. Tapi ku bilang, "iii jadi deg-degan, aku ajalah yg buka mba. Aku sholat dulu yaaa nda."

Setelah memantapkan diri dengan apapaun yg terjadi, ku buka akun ku dan ada tulisan selamat. Aaaa aku langsung sujud syukur dan teriak memanggil ibuku yg ada di luar. Rasanya hatiku dipenuhi dengan kebahagian yang luar biasa.

Ternyata memang benar bahwa rencana Alloh lebih indah dari rencanaku. Aku pernah gagal di tahap 2 2021. Ternyata Alloh kabulkan mimpiku di tahun 2022. Setelhh perjalanan panjang, mimpiku untuk bisa kuliah lagi terwujud. Sedikit demi sedikit aku lebih dekat dengan impianku.

Terima kasih lpdp, telah mengajarkanku tentang arti keteguhan dalam berjuang untuk mimpiku.

Ya Alloh, terima kasih atas Maha Baik nya engkau padaku.

Blabbering - aku merasa amat disayangi.

1. Nexian Journey (2011-2013)

Pemberian kakak, waktu itu aku kelas 3 SMA, katanya aku memang sudah perlu alat komunikasi buat nyari kampus. Iya ini hape pertamaku secara resmi. Kupakai selama 3 tahun s.d. Awal kuliah.

2. Andromax V (2013-2014)

Pemberian lagi, sampai sini nexian journey trackball nya udah ngaco. Touchscreen pecah sana sini. Tpi secara fungsi masih ok. Aku ndak ada masalah sih. Mungkin memang dia udah bosen aja sama hapenya. Alhamdulillaah. Nexian resmi aku taruh digudang rumah. Dengan andromax hanya bertahan 1 tahun.

3. Zenfone 5 (2014-2014)

Pemberian 😂 lagi. Nah sampai sini si andromax itu sering eror, komunikasi menjadi sulit, diberilah zenfone 5 ini. Alhamdulillaah Aku selalu bersyur setiap diberi. Tapi kali ini ada rasa, “apa ini nda berlebihan?”. Karena baru beliau pakai beberapa bulan.

Dan apesnya baru aku pakai beberapa bulan Zenfone ini hilang kamar temen sekontrakan, waktu itu aku hendak naik merbabu, keluar sebentar beli keperluan hiking. Dikontrakan cuma ada adikku yang sengaja mau aku ajak naik. Ada orang asing tiba-tiba dateng ke kontrakan nanyain seseorang. Adikku masih polos dan juga ga hafal siapa penghuni nya. Dipersilahkan masuklah ia sama adikku, kali aja yang ia cari ada didalam. Qodarullaah. Hapeku, hape temen 2 orang di charge di tempat yang sama. Qodarullaaah. Hanya beberapa bulan saja dengan zenfone.

4. Nexus 5 (2014-2017)

Aku bilang ke ade, jangan bilang kakak sama bapa ibu. Lalu kuijinkan pulang ia ke kampung. Karena waktu itu sudah masuk KP. Aku pura-pura sibuk dan ga pulang kampung. Akhirnya aku dapet tempat KP ngerjain jalan Tol, dan alhamdulillaah ada lah uang buat makan. Akhirnya tabungan aku pakai buat beli hape ini, bekas. Waktu itu 2,5jt apa ya. Mahal 😂 aku juga pertimbangin lama sekali. aku mikir hape ini masih mumpuni lah 5 tahun kedepan. Dan benar, sampai tahun 2017 masih oke lah. Cuma tombol power nya udah “longgar”. Sepulang dari padang Aku bawa ke LG center di Gambir. Hampir 300rb. Ganti tombol power doang biar muda lagi. Nggak kaget karena umumnya tempat begituan emg begitu. Cuma mau bilang makasih ke hape ini aja dan makasih ke diri sendiri bahwa keputusanmu waktu itu lumayan. 3 tahun bersama nexus.

5. Iphone 6 (2017-2019)

Pemberian lagi 😂 beliau pengen beli hape baru, hape lama dikasih lah ke aku. Alhamdulillaah aku terima aja, ga baik ditolak. Lalu nexus 5 nya karena masih oke aku kasih ke ibu. Meskipun bekas. Aku harap cintanya nyampe dan tetap besar seperti sedia kala. Jadi Hape pertama ibu. Sampai 2021 😂😂😂 karena battreynya suka ngedrop buat video call. Akhirnya nexus disimpan dirumah. Sama iphone ini bertahan selama 2 tahun.

6. Samsung Gal. S10 (2019-2019)

Iphone 6 battreynya sering lowbat, waktu di denpasar sering banget kelapangan yang perlu brightness tinggi jadi makin boros. Nah pas balik ke jakarta aku ganti battrey. Aman sentosa. Apesnya, dijatuhin ponakan. Hancur sehancur-hancurnya. Aneh. Bener hancur. Gatau gimana dia ngejatuhinnya. Kata ibu waktu aku tidur dia becanda ngambil hape dan jatuh ga tinggi sebenere. Masih bisa dipakai cuma aku males harus jelasin ke tiap orang yang nanya kenapa hape bisa begitu. Lalu dikasihlah lagi 😂 galaxy s10, tapi jarang kupakai. Karena agak besar, mungkin nda terbiasa saja. Lalu aku ganti LCD touchscreen sekalian. Biar enak lagi digenggam iphone 6 nya. Waktu itu di irepairABA 600rb.

7. Iphone 7 (2019-2021)

Iphone 6 mulai terasa lemot. Dibuat kerja udah mulai jadi masalah. Lalu aku mulai nyari iphone 7 diinternet. Kata temen Di renanstore cukup trusted, kenapa iphone 7, karena udah enak aja iphone 6, dicepetin aja. Lalu kakak tiba-tiba minta didisainin rumah. Aku sering kerumah buat ngobrolin disainnya. Diakhir tiba-tiba aku dibeliin iphone 7 meskipun bekas, Tapi red edition 256Gb itung-itung makasih katanya. Padahal ga pernah ngomong sedikitpun aku pengen beli hape. Dan samsung kemarin kan baru aja dikasih? Oh iya, setiap kerumah aku pura-pura handphone utamanya samsung galaxy S10. Dan iphone 6 itu sudah dianggap tidak ada. Lalu iphone 7 nya aku terima, asal dia mau nerima kembali samsungnya . Ya, ini udah berlebihan. Iphone 6 nya tinggal di kampung.

8. Iphone 12 mini (2021- sekarang)

Jadi dikampung ada acara bikin jersey,dimintainlah sumbangan. Lalu aku minta temen kerumah buat jual iphone 6 nya. Laku berapanya bisa dipakai buat jersey waktu itu tahun 2020. Nah ditahun 2021 hape ade ilang 😂 dugaannya jatuh waktu perjalanan pulang dari kost. Dia make nexus 5 😂😂😂 yaudah pake aja, kalo mau beli hape baru ya nabung. Tapi mungkin memang qodarullaah. Aku dibeliin iphone 12 sama Pak Bos dikantor 😂 entah ini rejekinya ade atau rejekiku. Akhirnya iphone 7 kukirim ke kampung.

Kesimpulan :

- alhamdulillaah betapa sayangnya Allaah kepadaku.

- Ternyata aku beli hape sampai dengan hari ini baru sekali.

- Jangan lihat aku yang sekarang, aku sama saja dari dulu.
