Antebellum

hey, Leverage peeps, I've got a thought. I've seen a lot of posts and memes joking about Nate's inability to understand that his clients do not want money, they want revenge. I also find this funny. but I was thinking about it and I realized something: there's a personal reason behind it. there is a very, very good reason why Nate doesn't get that.
Nate's drive to lead Leverage, outside of the crew, originated from his son's death due to his insurance company's refusal to cover the bill for the required treatment. we all know this. if his company had paid for Sam's treatment, everything would've been fine.
…or, if Nate had been a little wealthier, had a little more change to spend… maybe he could've paid for it. maybe Blackpool never would've had a say in any of it. maybe Nate would've had everything under control from the start.
we've discussed at length in the fandom how money equals safety for some of the others in the crew (Parker and Hardison grew up with little to none and know its importance to survival, Eliot needs it to stay ahead of his old enemies, etc.), but I don't know that I've seen any discussion on how it's relevant to Nate. for him, however, money equals security in healthcare and in housing (he lost the house, remember?). Nate's older than the others. he remained in the same place for much longer, and he had a stable life for a while. the others haven't been in that position before. many of their clients, however, are at that place in life.
yes, for the others, money keeps them ahead of the game and it keeps them secure. but none of them ever lost a kid because they couldn't pay for healthcare. none of them risk losing the life of someone who is completely dependent on them when they don't have enough.
(Hardison, perhaps, has the closest understanding, considering he hacked a bank to pay for his Nana's healthcare. but he never lost her.)
Nate thinks ahead, you know? he has a long-term view of things. I imagine that for him, when clients refuse the money, they're not just refusing a month's worth of groceries, or a place to stay the night, or the ability to keep running. for him, they're refusing control over their hard-earned, stable, long-term living situation. they're refusing the potential to save a family member's life.
I dunno, guys. I think that's a pretty good reason to not understand why people don't want the money.

⭐🌛🌞 november trick or treating... spooky season can be anytime if you aint a scaredy cat!!! flynn, terence, nate - from my series Lost & Found Children
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some WIPs!
Tumblr media
^ some theatre costume designs that inspired Flynn's outfit. originally I wanted more of a pierrot motif, but I went with a sortof celestial angel to match nate's fiery devil. I do want to draw them all as pierrots one day...
my friend asked about the "costume" part of this - terence is not wearing a "halloween costume" per se, because he thinks he's too mature for costumes (haha). hence the star moon and sun theme to unify all of their outfits. he IS a piano player in the story, who wears a similar outfit to concerts, so you can see him as being a sort of astronomical musician for the occasion. i think these designs turned out pretty rad and since they're not "stereotypical" halloween fare, i would like to use them again...
tumblr killed my drafts... and unfortunately I am too tired to type out more of the description that got lost.

Absolute yes to Nate apologizing to Will first.
Will had the least power and Nate was the harshest to him. His apology to Will means more to me than the eventual apology he’ll make to Ted (which we all know is coming).
Also yes to the lavender.

Reunion Chapter 11 is done.
Tumblr media
I knew I was going to have a hard time writing a note on this one, but man. This series has been a constant in my life through nine years and multiple earth-shattering life changes, and I'm so proud to have finally seen it to the end. But all the same...man. I don't know what to say.
I recently rediscovered my plans from 2015 for a oneshot prequel from Roger's POV, so this may not entirely be the end of the road. But as far as Light and Near's ongoing adventures go, I think this is the proper place to say goodbye. Thank you to everyone who has followed these stories, whether you've been reading them from the start or just discovered them today. Thank you for the comments, the fanart, the shitposts, the playlists, the cosplays, the TV Tropes entries, and the million other little signs of love you've shown my emotionally constipated fictional sons. Even if we've never spoken, I appreciate it all more than you know.
I hope this ending is every bit as satisfying to you as writing it felt for me. It's been an incredible ride.
Chapter Summary: "Long is the way and hard, that out of Hell leads up to Light." ~~John Milton, Paradise Lost

It says something about fandom bias that fans passionately remember the awful thing that Nate said to Colin in season 2 but forget that he apologized to Colin in the very same episode, an apology which Colin accepted with joy and open arms.
It’s funny because whenever a Nate fan would point that out, (or remind everyone of the complicated history between Nate and the team), someone would bring up his treatment of Will.  WILL never got an apology!
Now that Nate HAS apologized to Will, they’ve turned around to insist that this is the only apology Nate has made.
It’s awfully funny that these fans can remember Nate’s insult to Colin word for word, quoting “motel painting” at a drop of a hat, but conveniently forget the other half of the episode.

also let it be known that I am still mad as hell at Lloyd Shelley and his inadequate, borderline emotionally abusive parenting of Nate, c’mon
but the idea of a father being furious and horrified at the idea of his son seeing this amazing, sweet, utterly romantic gesture towards his wife, because…well, why? because it makes him look vulnerable? because he’s afraid of Nate thinking him foolish? it doesn’t make me angry. it breaks my damn heart.
