Most children would give anything to have Santa Claus as their father.
They wouldn’t if they knew what you did now.
Your father withheld a crucial detail throughout your many years of training. Perhaps the most important stipulation of them all—you cannot be Santa alone.
“Whoever wears the coat takes on the duties and responsibilities of Santa Claus. In accepting the contract, the cardholder acknowledges that they must marry the partner of their choosing before their first Christmas in service to retain the titles, privileges, and residence of Santa Claus. Failure to do so will result in immediate de-Santification.”
You needed a partner. Someone to act as caretaker to the elves and the reindeer, and to watch over the Workshop and general operations on Christmas night while you fly all around the globe, the embodiment of the season's spirit.
Santa Claus wouldn’t—and couldn't—be Santa Claus, if not for their other half.
You suppose you should’ve known, should’ve worked it out sooner. So much of what made Christmas special was because of your mother, the previous Mrs. Claus. In his many years as Santa, your father made a point to remind everyone of that. She is the steward of the season.
While Santa Claus tinkers with toys and checks the lists, charts travel routes and weather patterns, and develops contingency plans to accommodate the ever-evolving technology, their spouse keeps spirits bright. Without help, the effort was pointless.
So, you should have realized. But you hadn’t, and now it might be too late.
“I have to find a husband in 28 days. If I don’t get married before Christmas Eve, I don’t get to wear the coat. I’ll lose the title, and the reins my family has held for thousands of years will pass to someone else,” you rant, tone carefully hushed to not rouse the temperamental husky one backyard over.
Your breath plumes away from you, rising before dissolving into the chilly Denver air. It reminds you of a snow globe, a bittersweet one.
“Who?” asks Nate.
Nate, like most of the world, is a Mundane, a non-magical person. He isn’t the descendant of Cupid or Mother Nature. Or a Santa Claus like yourself. He’s just Nate. Nathan MacKinnon from Halifax. Nathan MacKinnon, who now resides in Denver, Colorado, for work.
It's well past midnight, and you’re sitting on his back porch with your head hung low and one of your reindeer, Comet, is nibbling on his icy grass.
“I don’t know,” you answer with a glum shrug. “Normally, it would go to the next child in line. Since I don't have any siblings, I guess the Council of Legendary Figures will convene and select my replacement.”
Nate nods.
In his eyes, you can see him listing off the members in his head. Mother Nature, Father Time, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, Cupid, Jack Frost. To him, they’re mythical beings. Bedtime stories and folktales he was told as a child by the adults in his life. For you, they’re the closest thing you have to extended relatives.
And they butt heads like ones too.
“What will happen then? I mean, where will you go? Could you stay where you are now, just not as a Claus?” he asks.
“The North Pole is the only home I’ve ever known. All my family’s ever known. When the duty passes from one generation to the next, the predecessors remain in the village, but who knows if they’d get to stay if I fail to comply? It’s all in jeopardy now because of me.”
Nate lowers himself down onto the step beside you. He does his best to disregard the unpleasant feeling of his pajamas soaking in the snow, but you hear the wince.
With the snap of your fingers, the snow is gone, and his pants are completely dry. You’ve even warmed the concrete beneath him.
“Thanks,” he murmurs softly.
He doesn’t have to thank you; you’ve told him a million times. But he wants to. He can’t let you give without acknowledgment. Nate refuses to appear ungrateful, even for the little things that seem insignificant to you. Like vanishing snow or drying his pajama pants.
Funnily, “Santa Claus” can feel like a thankless job. No one ever thanks you. They thank the persona, the relic. Nate wants you to know he’s grateful for your care and friendship, regardless of your occupation or magic.
Gently, he bumps his shoulder against yours. “You know there’s more than one person in a marriage, right?”
“Yes, but I haven’t exactly made an effort to find the other half of the equation,” you reply, deflecting.
You always overtake blame. Nate thinks it might be your singular flaw.
“I mean, it's hard because it's not like I can date like a normal person; my pool is small. And shallow. They either want me to give up the power entirely or give it to them instead. You remember what happened with Jackson Frost. All he wanted was the power his father failed to usurp. That should have been clear from the start. I guess I could see if Orpheus is still seeing the nymph Mother Nature fixed him up with. The whole narcolepsy thing, though not his fault, isn’t ideal, but the only other option is Val. And I’d rather not spend the rest of my life worried about flying arrows and jilted lovers.”
As the daughter of a Legendary Figure and soon-to-be one yourself, you haven’t had much time to date. Or even think about it, for that matter.
There was always a new wrapping paper to test for durability and shine or a machine on the assembly line that needed to be fixed before it broke any more dolls. Or a reindeer with a stomach ache refusing to fly. Or a fire in the kitchen that sets back cookie production by three weeks. Or a maniacal being with frigokinesis (the ability to manipulate snow) attempting to overthrow Santa Claus and assume control over the North Pole.
Crisis after crisis, all with very little personal time. That's why you opted for people who understood: the children of other Legendary Figures with dominion over their own holidays and cultural traditions. However, fraternizing with other magical beings comes with its own set of problems. For example, an ex-boyfriend and his father plotting to ruin your home, ancestral legacy, and a beloved holiday out of pure spite.
“You’re forgetting someone.” Nate’s quiet voice yanks you out of the downward spiral.
“Who? Easter Bunny is our eternal bachelor who would sooner give up candy than have kids of his own, and Tooth Fairy’s kids are still, well, kids. Jack Smith recently took over as Pumpkin King after his father retired, but he’s not the nicest company. Especially when he’s drunk, which is, truthfully, most days. I guess I could look outside the Council, but —”
“Me. I’m talking about me. You forgot me,” Nate interjects with an impatient huff.
What?” you blink in disbelief, assuming you misheard him.
There was no way he was throwing his hat into the ring.
“I could be Mr. Claus. If you’d have me.”
Your face melts. If you'd have him? It wasn't even a question.
“Nate, I could never ask that of you. You would have to leave everything—everyone, behind. You would have to give up a career you love and have worked so hard for. Not to mention abandoning all the friends you’ve made along the way. You would have to lie about where you live and who you married to—and what she does for a living for the rest of your life. Nothing would ever be normal again. I’m tethered to the North Pole, but I won’t lock you up there with me.”
“I’ve been dreaming about the North Pole since I was a kid. Long before you nearly knocked over my family’s Christmas tree and had to make it up to me with a ride around the block on Comet,” he says with a chuckle.
You snort, recalling the fire you almost started the first time your father ever brought you along for deliveries. You weren’t allowed down a chimney for a few years after that, but the friend you gained was worth the punishment.
You take Comet to visit as often as you can and have been for years. He leaves out your favorite cookies on Christmas Eve, and you always save his house for last so you can spend the last hour of the season with your favorite person.
But you always imagined a day would come when he finally grew up and stopped needing Santa Claus. For as long as you’ve known him, you’ve been planning for a broken heart.
You sniffle. Nate takes your hand in his.
“Knowing you—loving you has put that dream within grasp. You wouldn’t be locking me away because I’d go willingly. Happily. All I’ve ever wanted for Christmas is to go to the North Pole with you. To see where you grew up and meet all the people who made you as wonderful as you are.”
“Why have you never said anything?”
“Because I knew you wouldn’t be able to. “Only elves, reindeer, and Clauses,” remember?” Nate smiles, mimicking your father’s response to a ten-year-old Nate’s innocent request. He even does the jolly belly laugh, which warms your heart. “Bernard wouldn’t even let me past the hanger if the sleigh didn’t toss me into the Atlantic first.
But in all seriousness, I didn’t want to put you in an uncomfortable position with your father again. Or with yourself. I know how much the sanctity of Christmas means to you. I didn’t want you to feel obligated to show me something that would feel like intruding on the magic to you.”
All Nate has ever wanted for Christmas is for you to show him your home. All you’ve ever wanted is Nate. The only gift your father couldn’t make and the elves couldn’t build. In all her festive glory, even your mother couldn’t put what you truly wanted under the tree, though not for lack of trying.
Nate was the only person who could give the present of his presence, but you’d always been too fearful to ask, too worried he didn’t feel the same.
But here he is, crouched on a step in the middle of the night watching a reindeer chase a moth like a cat, telling you he’d give up everything to stand by your side.
For you to be Santa Claus.
“Are you sure?” you ask apprehensively as if he were an animal you didn’t want to spook. “Sometimes we say things in the moment that we don’t really mean. Especially when someone flew 3,000 miles on a reindeer to throw a pity party in your backyard. You can take it back, and I promise nothing will change. No hard feelings whatsoever. I’ll still come and bring Comet to visit as often as possible. And you’ll stay on the Nice List, don’t worry. I wouldn’t even dream of —”
Nate cuts you off with a kiss. Sweet and perfect, and full of promise. The kind of kiss you dream about as a little girl, wondering what your Prince Charming might be like when he finally arrives. And tonight, yours did.
Albeit, the cape was missing (you preferred flannel pajamas anyway), and he hadn’t ridden in on the back of a mighty steed (you crash-landed on a reindeer-back, if that counts), but it was magical all the same.
“Wait!” you burst, abruptly pulling away. “What are you going to tell your parents? ‘Hey, Mom and Dad. Yeah, no, everything’s great. I just quit my job, sold my house, and moved to an undisclosed location—all without warning. No reason to worry!’ Somehow, I don’t see that going over all that well.”
“We can tell them we’re in Alaska and that you’re a toy maker," Nate casually supplies. He sounds like he's talking about the weather or what he had for lunch, not a life-altering cover story. "You couldn’t leave because your workshop is there, so I decided to move to be with you. People move all the time, especially to be with their fiancés.”
Though your heart flutters at the title, worry still hangs low over your head. You know how much he loves his family; you can’t bear to be the reason they’re separated indefinitely.
“But when I find a way for them to visit, how would we swing that? The sleigh is big, but it's not airplane-big. Curtis is a master of disguise, but even he couldn’t make the sleigh look less like a sleigh.”
“Doesn’t Sandman owe your dad a favor?” Nate winks.

Colorado (For the First Time)
~Colorado (For the First Time) by Daniel Nunnelee~
Author's Note: I'm lowkey really proud of this idea ngl Summary: Y/N returns to Denver after her breakup with Nate Warnings: none? Word Count: 3,935 Nathan Mackinnon x fm!reader
Tumblr media
She hasn’t returned to Colorado since she broke up with Nate a year ago. It was a difficult time on her part, to break up with him right before he had a six away games but it was the only time she was able to move everything from their shared apartment to her new place in Seattle.
She didn’t want to go back to her hometown in Nova Scotia since she’s been away from it for eight years now. She couldn’t stay in Colorado because everything reminded her of him.
The street they lived on for eight years together, the coffee shop she would go to every morning and before every one of his games. The hike they would take together every weekend he was home. The friends she made were also his friends.
The signs all over Denver that talked about the Avalanche and Nathan. He was having the best season of his career, which was difficult to say because it seemed as though every season he was getting better and better.
She moved to Seattle because that’s where part of her has always wanted to live. She loved the ocean and the rain. It seemed as though it was the perfect place to live. Except, she missed everything about Denver.
Nate and Y/N’s relationship was perfect. She was happy with him and he was more than happy with her. Except they had been together since they were seventeen years old.
It’s silly to say but Y/N wanted to get married and have kids before she was thirty. She was twenty-seven and Nate kept telling her he wanted to wait until after his career was done to get married. Which was understandable but Nate could have a career that would last another decade.
Selfishly, Y/N couldn’t wait another decade to get married and start a family, she wasn’t even sure she could have children by then. She spoke to Nate about her wants and desires out of the relationship but he wouldn’t listen. He thought that she would drop it and then they’d go along his plan. But eventually, Y/N got tired of waiting around and just being his girlfriend.
If he wasn’t ready to settle down and start an official life as one, she needed to step away. He couldn’t say the words and she couldn’t stay with him anymore. Within a few days her entire life in Denver was behind her.
Except her friends. She missed her friends dearly. Melissa and Gabe have been begging her to come and visit. Alongside a few of the other wives and girlfriends. She wanted to go but she felt as though it would be going behind Nate’s back. She didn’t want to do that. But here she was with her suitcase waiting on her Uber to her AirBnb she was going to be staying in for a few weeks.
It was March in Denver and it was fifty degrees. It was beautiful and not too cold. Her Uber stopped in front of her, she double checked it was her own before she climbed inside. The driver was making small talk about why she traveled to Denver.
“Are you a sports fan? You should go see the Avs play tomorrow night,” he explained as he glanced towards her at a red light. She forced a polite smile.
“Yeah, I was thinking about it, I do love the Avs,” she mumbled as she took a deep breath before glancing at her phone to see Melissa had texted her.
“Nathan Mackinnon is supposed to continue the home point streak tonight, you have to go see it. He’s insane,” the driver explained.
Hearing his name, felt like a dagger in her chest. The driver had no idea but it was unbearable to hear about him.
~~~
He was lying on his apartment couch tossing a tennis ball into the air with a random movie on his TV screen. He had an optional practice today, and he decided that he needed a day of recovery. He spent the morning getting a few treatments done at the arena and he was ordered to lay down and do nothing. Which was weirdly harder than he thought.
Gabe left the arena at the same time as Nate and decided to invite himself over to Nate’s apartment. Nate was starting to feel like himself once the season went into full swing. Except he was still empty. His entire NHL career he had Y/N by his side, this was the first season he was without her. Except, he knows that she still watches every game.
He knows she was at the game in Seattle in November. She posted something on her Instagram story about being in Climate Pledge Arena. He got three assists on the night. All he wanted to do was call her and see her before he left Seattle.
He didn’t. He couldn’t. He was selfish and waited too long. Her mind was already set on not wanting to wait, he couldn’t change it.
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell you this or not,” Gabe muttered as he liftedh is gaze from his phone. Nate caught the ball and threw it for his dog, Maggie, before he switched his gaze to Gabe.
“Well now you have to tell me,” he let out with a huff of air as he sat up, leaning his head against the top of the couch. Gabe paused for a few moments as he dropped his gaze towards his phone again before he took in a long breath.
“Y/N in town for a few weeks,” he said, meeting Nate’s gaze. His eyes widened slightly as he became still. “Melissa has missed her a lot, she’s staying at a BnB near uh-here actually,” Gabe explained further.
Nate dropped his gaze towards his lap at the ball, Maggie dropped in his lap. He took it and threw it down the hallway. “Have you seen her?” he asked, his voice breaking while he spoke.
“Yeah, she saw the kids and stayed for a few drinks,” he said as he leaned forward, resting his arms on his hands. “She’s good, I mean she loves her new job in Seattle. Her and Johanna are still close, she sees Burky all the time. She loves it there,” he explains.
“That’s good, I’m-I’m happy for her,” Nate said hesistantly, forcing a tight lip smile while switching his gaze towards the movie. Gabe smiled half-heartedly as he lets out a dry chuckle.
“That’s a load of bullshit, you wish she was miserable,”
“That’s not true, I am happy that she is happy,”
“Oh come on, Nate, you know damn well you wish she was miserable like you are,” Gabe countered while throwing his hands to the side.
“I am not miserable, look at the year I’m having,” Nate argued back as he shook his head. “If she’s happy, I’m happy,” he repeated with a forced smile before leaning back. Nate dropped his gaze towards his hand as he watched Maggie drop the ball in his lap again. Gabe clenched his jaw as he looked over Nate’s hesitant frame. “Did she ask about me?”
Gabe smirked as he chuckled, “She asked if you thought it would be weird if she went to the game tomorrow,” Gabe met Nate’s eyes and his mouth fell open and he shook his head.
“Not weird,” he mumbled as he kept eye contact with Gabe, “It wouldn’t be weird at all.”
“Okay, good because she’s coming tomorrow, hanging in the suite with us,”
“Even better,” Nate mumbled as he tossed the ball for Maggie. Gabe furrowed his eyebrows as he stared towards Nate suspiciously.
“It doesn’t bother you one bit that the girl you’re probably supposed to be engaged to right now is staying at an AirBnB two streets over,” Gabe said as he paused the movie on the screen. Nate shrugged.
“What do you want me to say, Gabe?” Nate said as he clenched his jaw, “I had a ring ready but I made her wait too long and she left. What do you want me to do?” ~~~
Every morning, she’d go to the coffee shop on the same street her old apartment was on. She wanted to avoid Nate but it was inevitable that she was going to see him after the game tonight. Which Gabe convinced her to go to.
She walked up to the counter and Jeremiah was standing behind it with a wide grin, “Oh my god, Y/N! It's been so long! How have you been?” he said excitedly as he pulled out the large plastic cup and began writing the details of her usual drink on the cup. She returned the kind smile as she handed him her card.
“I’ve been good, I live in Seattle now,” she replied as she added fifteen dollars as a tip to her drink. His eyes widened as he smiled. There was no one waiting behind them so he pried some more information out of her.
“What happened to Nate?” he asked in a hushed voice, leaning closer to her. She let out a dry chuckle.
“We broke up, but I’m back in Denver visiting a few friends and my favorite places,” she offered as she met Jeremiah’s gaze. His eyes widened as his mouth fell open.
“You’re kidding!? You guys were soulmates, I’m sure,” he let out as he was handed back her coffee order. She took a hold of it, sipping it. Seattle had some amazing coffee but nothing was like her coffee shop directly across from her apartment. She’d spend many hours in the coffee shop working on her writing.
“Even soulmates don’t end up together sometimes,” she offered him a sad smile before she took a deep breath, “Seattle has nothing on your lattes Jeremiah,” she mumbled.
“You know, he still comes in before every home game. Tips fifteen dollars like you, but never smiles. He stopped smiling just around the time you stopped coming in. I knew it had to do with you,” he explained. She pressed her lips together as she tilted her head to the side.
“He only gets a two dollar coffee,” she let out with a dry chuckle. She glanced towards her watch. It was three hours before puck drop, Nate would be stopping by to get his coffee any minute. Jeremiah glanced towards his watch before glancing towards the door. “Well, I have to go. I’ll see you tomorrow Jeremiah,” she mumbled as she began walking out of the coffee shop.
She shoved the door open and turned left to walk back towards the AirBnB. She glanced towards her watch before she lifted her gaze to see Nate standing dead in his tracks. She stopped walking as she met his gaze. His blue eyes were bright, even from a distance.
His nose was more crooked than before, she remembered the game he face planted against the panthers that messed up his jaw and his nose. He was wearing a navy suit, one of his many suits that pratically look identical. But if you’d ask him, he’d say they were a slightly different shade of blue.
He took a few steps towards her as he dropped his gaze towards the concrete. He admired the black leather pants she was wearing with her grey sweater with the words Avalanche written across it. Her lips curled upward once she met his gaze, it was almost a reflex. It was so natural.
He was only a foot away from her, maintaining eye contact with her as he had so many words on his tongue. Marry me? I love you. I need you. I haven’t been the same without you.
She kept staring at his nose, it was already crooked but it was much worse than before. “Your nose,” she let out, reaching her hand towards him, but she quickly dropped her hand to her side. His eyebrows raised as a smile formed to his lips. A real smile.
“Is it that bad?” he asked, scrunching his nose slightly when he asked. “Didn’t think it looked that bad,” he mumbled, raising his hand up touching it.
“Does it hurt?” she asked, concern still written all over her features. He shook his head as he scanned her features. “Can you even breathe with that, Nathan?” she asked, a small smile forming on her lips. His cheeks flushed red at the sound of his name falling from her lips. She rarely called him Nathan, or Nate for that matter, so when she did say his name it felt extra special. She also only called him that when she was being serious or flirtatious.
“I can breathe fine, my-” he cleared his throat, “I use a breathing strip sometimes, but I’m fine. No nose job needed, unless you think it’s too crooked now,” he muttered, rubbing his thumb across the bridge of his nose.
“Not too crooked, it fits you,” she mumbled as she scanned his features. He chuckled nervously as he shoved his hands into his pockets.
Seeing him felt like the first breath of air after being underwater for too long.
“How’s Seattle?” he choked out. Her smile faltered slightly as she took a deep breath.
“It’s great, but I do miss home,” she said as she tilted her head to the side, meeting his light blue desperate gaze.
His breath caught in his throat as he glanced towards the coffee shop behind her. He clenched his jaw as he dropped his head. “What if you stopped by after the game? Maggie would love to see you,” he offered, meeting her gaze.
She wished she would’ve contemplated a little longer but the words, “Yeah, of course, I’ve missed her a lot,” came out of her mouth before she could come up with an excuse. In all honesty she probably didn’t have any excuse. He smiled widely.
“Okay, I’ve got to go before I’m-”
“Off schedule, I know, I’ll see you later,” she muttered as he kept eye contact with her for a few seconds before he walked past her towards the coffee shop. Her heart fluttered like it did every day for a better half of a decade. She missed the feeling in her chest when was around.
He was her soulmate and she knew that but she was so tired of waiting around. She needed to step away. But here he was, the same person she fell in love with. Was it all worth it?
~~~
She was sitting in the suite beside Gabe as he was holding his son in his lap. The first period was underway and it was a lot of back and forth. Gabe bumped into her shoulder, “Are you okay?” he asked. She nodded as she watched Nate skate towards the penalty box. She lifted her gaze towards the jumbotron to see the penalty. She rolled her eyes as she turned her gaze to look at Gabe. “You’re like extra quiet,”
“Don’t have anything to talk about,” she countered, fighting the smile forming on her lips.
“Uh-huh, you’re smiling,” he muttered.
“I’m a smiley person,” she countered as she looked back towards the ice. She watched the penalty kill work.
“You haven’t been smiley in a while,” he observed as he looked back towards the ice watching twenty-nine skate back onto the ice. He smirked, “Did a certain someone help with that?” he teased.
“I saw him earlier when I stopped at my old coffee shop,” she muttered.
Gabe started laughing excitedly, “I knew it!”
The game ended in a disappointing shootout loss and the loss of his home game point streak. She waited outside of the locker room like she had done for their entire relationship. He walked out first, wanting to avoid the media frenzy. He smiled widely as he walked towards her. Making sure to keep his hands to himself.
“I’m sorry about the point streak,” she let out as she tilted her head to the side. He shrugged his shoulders.
“Stupid technicality, nothing to worry about,” he mumbled still with a wide smile. “Come on, Maggie is dying to see you,” he said as he guided her towards his car through the parking garage.
“You got out pretty fast,” she observed as she glanced towards the locker room to see a few of the other guys leaving. He nodded as he ran his hand across his chin.
“Was avoiding the questions about the home point streak. Honestly, kinda glad it’s off my plate,” he expressed.
“I’m sure it was a lot of pressure,” she mumbled as he stopped in front of his car to open the passenger door for her. Like he used to do every time they would drive together. She smiled towards him as she climbed into his car. It smelled the same of black ice car scent he’s had since he first ever bought a car.
He jogged to the other side of the car and quickly collapsed in the driver seat. “It’s nothing I can’t handle,” he let out as he met her gaze, he gave her an over the top wink before he turned the car on. “Mikko totally put it in the net though,” he mumbled as he started backing out of his parking spot. She chuckled.
“Gabe thought so too,” she mumbled as she tilted her head to the side as she looked out of the window as they pulled out onto the streets of Denver.
“When do you go back to Seattle?” he asked as he tilted his head to the side to meet her gaze at the red light. She clenched her jaw as she scanned his features, the cut on his lip got worse after this game.
“In two weeks,” she mumbled barely above a whisper. He nodded as he began driving back towards his apartment.
They remained in comfortable yet awkward silence. There were so many words she wanted to say to him, and he had so many words to say to her. After twenty minutes they walked up towards her old apartment. It was like deja vu as he pushed the door open and Maggie ran towards the door. She began to squeal and jump up on Y/N.
She laughed excitedly as she leaned down and let Maggie jump all over her. She got teary eyed as guilt consumed her. “I know, Maggie girl,” she mumbled as she glanced towards Nate who was smiling widely.
After a few minutes, Maggie calmed down and wandered away from the pair. She turned her gaze towards Nate. His eyebrows furrowed harshly as he reached his hand over to her and rested it onto her cheek. It was a reflex, “Hey, hey, hey,” he mumbled as he scanned her features. “What’s wrong?” he asked as he ran his thumb across her cheek. She shook her head as she pulled away from him.
“This was a mistake, I’m sorry, Nate. I should go-” she let out as she began walking towards the door. He shook his head as he reached his hand towards her again resting his hand on her waist. She squinted her eyes hard as tears fell onto her cheek.
“Don’t leave,” he mumbled as he pulled her towards him, she didn’t pull away as she rested her hand onto his chest. “Don’t leave,” he let out again as he looked deeply into her eyes. She had a small smile on her lips as she continued reading his light blue eyes. “Don’t leave,” he let out again, barely audible, before he leaned towards her and kissed her urgently. She gripped his suit jacket tightly as she returned the kiss.
He pulled away as he took a deep breath, breathing in her vanilla perfume. “How’d I manage to not kiss those lips for a year,” he mumbled before he pressed his lips against hers again. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she pressed her body against his. She needed to be close to him, and nothing seemed to be close enough.
She tugged his suit jacket from his body as she stumbled backwards towards the hallway that leads towards their, his, bedroom. “Wait,” he mumbled as he pulled away. She leaned towards him and kissed him again. He chuckled as he pulled away again, “I need to ask you-” he trailed off as he clenched his jaw, still panting hard as he kept his hands on her waist.
He swallowed hard before he took a sharp breath, “Did I do something to make you end things? I know I waited too long, I know I fucked up with that. I shouldn’t have-I just need to know if that’s actually the reason,” he muttered as he brushed a few pieces of hair away from her face.
She scanned his features, “You didn’t do anything,” she mumbled. He clenched his jaw as he nodded. He licked his lips before he pulled away from her, “Nate,” she muttered.
“Wait there,” he mumbled as he walked towards his bedroom. He clenched his jaw as he dug through his drawer next to his bed and pulled out the ring box. He walked confidently towards where she was waiting in the living room, still teary eyed. He opened the ring box and showed the ring inside the box.
Her eyes widened as she gasped, “Nathan,” she mumbled.
“I had the ring for months, I just thought that when I asked it didn’t matter. I didn’t realize how much it actually mattered to you and-and I should’ve realized it. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” he explained, waving the box dramatically in his hands. “I wanted to ask you, of course I wanted to ask you,” he let out as he took another step towards her.
She met his gaze as she took short small breaths. “Nate,”
“Still do,” he let out as he scanned her features. She fought the small smile on her lips as tears filled her eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t make you feel like I wanted to. I’ve spent every day since you left regretting I didn’t get the chance to ask,” he muttered.
“Ask me,” she let out, her voice breaking. His eyes widened.
“What?” he asked barely above a whisper.
“Ask me,” she let out as she nodded her head. He smiled as he kneeled down onto one knee without an ounce of hesitation.
“Will you marry me?” he asked.
“Of course, Nate, oh my god,” she muttered as he stood up from his kneeling position as she jumped into his arms and kissed him urgently. She wrapped her legs around his waist as he guided her towards their bedroom. She pulled away, resting her forehead against his, “It wasn’t just the ring, Nate,” she mumbled before she kissed him again, “I was worried you were bored with me that’s why you didn’t want to ask,” she let out as she ran her fingers through the short ends of his hair.
He shook his head slightly, “I love you, okay? I’m sorry I didn’t show it. But I’m going to do better, alright?” he reassured as he shoved open the door as he guided her towards the bed they once shared. She nodded as she hummed.
“I’ll do better too, I love you so much,” she mumbled as she pressed her lips hard against his as he slowly laid her down onto her back. He pulled away as he admired her features.
“Let me remind you how much I love you,” he whispered as he started to kiss her neck slowly.

underneath the mistletoe
disclaimer: halfway! can't believe it! thank you for all your support so far, i've been so blown away. this one is based off one of my favourite christmas songs 'underneath the mistletoe' by kelly clarkson and brett eldredge and one of my favourites to write too, so i hope y'all enjoy!!
pairing: nathan mackinnon x gn!reader
word count: 2.1k+
warnings: idiots to lovers, couple swears, and a tiny mention of alcohol
disclaimer: once again, this is a piece of fiction and this piece of art called a gif isn't mine, all credit to the wonderful creator
Tumblr media
You were standing in EJ’s kitchen, sipping on some apple cider. He was gracious enough to host a Thanksgiving dinner for the team and Nate had asked you to come with him. You loved hanging out with everyone, so it was an instant yes, but it was times like this when you wished you hadn’t come.
The rest of the WAGs had been talking about their boyfriends, their holiday date night plans, seeing their family and all that. It would’ve been fine...if you’d been one of the significant others. You and Nate were just friends, no matter how much time you spent together or how often you came to events that were usually reserved for the better halves. Around the holidays - the mistletoe, the music, even the Hallmark movies - it was always rubbed in how single you were. It didn’t feel right to keep standing in the room with them, feeling like an outsider, so you moved to the quiet, empty kitchen.
“You know, you can contribute to the conversation,” Mel said, coming to join you by the sink. You shook your head and looked down at the mug in your hand.
“Me and Nate aren’t together,”
“You might as well be.” You scoffed at her statement. “You came together, I’m 100% sure he complimented when he came to your door to pick you up, and you matched your outfit to his, and I know that because he wore the same sweater last year but yours is new. He’s introduced you to his parents for God’s sake! And I know you’re considering going to Cole Harbour in the summer. ”
“We’re just friends,”
“Friends don’t do that.”
When you didn’t budge, she pressed more. “Oh, c’mon, you can’t tell me you’ve never thought about you and Nate together,”
“Of course, I have. Is that what you want to hear? Nate’s amazing and kind and exactly my type. But I wouldn’t want to ruin what we have, okay? So I won’t say anything, not now, not ever. Please just let it go for once, okay?” You turned to face her, expecting some sort of an apology to fall from her lips. Instead, you saw a soft smile and followed her gaze to see Nate standing in the doorway.
She quietly left the two of you alone and you turned to face him, watching his face. His eyes were unreadable and his mouth had been open in shock since you saw him. You tried to smile at him but it came out strained and he noticed.
“That true? You like me? Like more than friends?”
“I’d be lying if I said no,” You looked down at your hands and the air in the room started to get tense as Nate took in your words, still blankly staring at you.
“Y/N...I-.” He stammered. He looked down at his feet and you knew, you just knew. Knew he didn’t like you like that and he was trying to let you down easy.
“I have to go.” You rushed away from the stifling air in the kitchen, from the party, from him. The wind outside nipped at your arms and tears were freezing on your cheeks but it was the least of the pain as you left your heart with the man that fractured it.
---
“Dude, what happened to you at the party on Saturday? You just disappeared,” JT asked Nate as he walked into the locker room after practice later that week. Nate shrugged him off but Gabe piped up.
“Probably went out with Y/n, I didn’t see them either,” He winked and the boys erupted with hoots and hollers.
“Woah, no, no, we’re just friends. I don’t like them like that.”
“Yeah, okay, and I don’t have three horses,” EJ said. The boys laughed again but Nate shook his head adamantly.
“How would you even know if I like them?”
“How would we not know?” Mikko laughed along with the rest of the room. Nate huffed and sat down, taking off his equipment. Tyson beside him had already finished undressing and picked up his bag.
“Dog, hate to break it to you, but you’re so obvious even I can see it. You’ve got, like, heart-eyes or something every time you see them.” He left without another word, letting his teammate absorb his words. The rest of his teammates filled out of the room soon after, Nate taking the rest of his equipment off slowly as Tyson’s words hung around in his head.
“You can’t tell me you’ve never thought about it,” Gabe said, sitting next to Nate as he untied his skates.
“I mean,” He shrugged. “I don’t know, they’re my best friend. They’re just always...there, I’ve never thought about being more with them because...”
“Because you already act like a couple with them?” Gabe filled in. Nate looked at his captain with furrowed brows but Gabe just shook his head. “Barrie is your best friend. Sid is your best friend. Y/n’s never been like them, and I think you know that.” He stood up, and gave Nate a pat on his leg before wishing him a good night and leaving the room.
Nate couldn’t even answer him, his words bouncing around in his head.
Because you already act like a couple? Y/n’s not like them.
Nate knew he was more physically affectionate with you than he was with some of his other friends, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. He was just more comfortable around you, like you were somehow in tune with his thoughts and feelings. And yeah, he asked you to all the Avalanche galas and events but that’s just because he always got lonely at those things and you always made them good nights instead of boring ones. Sure, he’d dropped everything to take care of you when you were sick and yeah, he might’ve brought you lunch at work a few times but that doesn’t mean he’s in love with you, right?
Right?
---
Mel knew how to throw a party, you’d give her that. She’d invited you to her annual anti-hockey player holiday party and you’d come despite most of the others being significant others, which Nate had made clear you weren’t. The party had died down about an hour ago, and while most of the girls left, you stayed to help Mel clean up. The two of you were sitting at the dining room table, wine glasses in hand, talking about how the Linnea was adjusting to having a baby brother when the door opened, letting in a brisk chill.
“Babe! We’re back!” Gabe shouted and from the two of you were sitting you had a clear view of the guys that walked in -- Gabe, EJ, Mikko, and...Nate.
It had only been a week since you’d seen him but you could tell how different he looked. You could see the way his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes and the way his shoulders were slumped. The two of you locked eyes and you noticed he was wearing the ugly Christmas sweater you’d given him last year.
“Noo,” He laughed as he pulled out the sweater from the bag. It was one of those ugly Christmas ones - something you figured everyone needed to have at least one of - and it was decorated like a gingerbread house. There were even little gingerbread people near the candy covered front door and the sleeves were made to look like iced shingles.
“It’s what you deserve after you wouldn’t bake cookies with me!”
“Gotta keep my diet up, you know? Gotta keep these gains,” He flexed his arms and you laughed with him. “I love it though, thank you.”
“There’s more in there,” You motioned to the gift bag and Nate looked in it again, pulling out a smaller wrapped item. He tore it open and his mouth fell open in shock.
“Goth Babe tickets?!” You nodded and Nate ran a hand through his hair. “Holy shit, thank you!”
“I figured you could ask Barrie to go with you, that’s why there’s two of them.” He turned away from the tickets to look at you, his eyebrows scrunched together.
“Why would I want to ask him when I could ask you?”
“Why would you want me to come?”
“You’re pretty much my favourite person, Y/n, of course I’d want you to come with me.” His eyes were soft and you could only keep eye contact with him for so long before you buckled under his gaze. You nodded your head at his request, trying to ignore the butterflies in your stomach.
Your chair scraped along the hardwood floors as you ran to the kitchen, the memories that came flooding back being too much for you to handle. You’d never have that Nate again, not with how you absolutely wrecked the relationship you did have with him. A small amount of tears blurred your vision and you leaned on the counter trying to catch your breath. You barely even registered Mel’s voice calling your name until she was in front of you.
“I didn’t know he was going to be here, I swear.”
“It’s fine, it just...caught me off guard, that’s all.”
“You guys haven’t talked about what happened?”
You sighed. “Not since...we haven’t talked. What would I even say to him?”
“I would think of something quick because he’s coming over here,” Mel said quickly, before darting out of the kitchen before you could reprimand her. You turn around to face Nate, trying to keep a neutral face. You failed quickly as you took in the wear of his face up close; the way his eyes drooped just a little bit more and how his lips were cracked, probably because he didn’t have anyone to remind him to use lip balm.
“Nate.”
“Hi.” He cleared his throat. “You, uh, you look really good,”
“Oh, this old thing?” The tension in the room stayed as thick as the snow on the ground outside and you gulped. “Thanks.”
It stayed silent for a minute before Nate cleared his throat. “Look, Y/n, am I...Am I too late?” He asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Too late for what?” He opened his mouth to continue but another voice interrupted him.
“Ooh, lovebirds, mistletoe. You know the rules,” EJ teased. The two of you slowly looked up towards the small piece of mistletoe under the doorway. Your eyes dart back to EJ, who has a shit-eating grin on his face, and you start to shake your head a little.
“EJ…” You warned. “No, we’re….We’re… just friends-”
“No.” Nate's voice was quiet but you heard him clearly. Your eyes met the ice-blue eyes in front of you and you tilted your head a little. “We’ve never been just friends.”
With care, one of his hands moves to the back of your neck and he starts to lean in. It was slow but you know it’s intentional. Nate’s giving you an out, a moment to tell him he missed his chance and that you never want to see him again.
Cautiously, you lean in to meet him under the mistletoe. The world didn’t melt away, no, you could still hear all the guys hollering in the background, but it only amplified every other sense. How Nate’s lips are pressed against yours, how his warm hands are cupping your cheeks, how you can feel the tension releasing from his body - that was all you could focus on, all you wanted to focus on. When the two of you pull away for air, a soft smile starts to grace his face while you stand there trying to figure out what just happened.
“In case it wasn’t clear, you’re exactly my type too. To hell with friendship.” You look back at his eyes and see nothing but sincerity. No uncertainty, no blankness, nothing like that night.
“But you said...I thought-”
“You left before I got to really say anything. And it might’ve taken me a little longer to get it through my thick head but…”
“Nate, what are you saying?” He sighed and gently intertwined his fingers with yours, caressing the skin between your thumb and forefinger.
“You’re the one and you’ve been the one for a while, I’ve just been too scared to see it. I want to spend every night wrapped up in your arms and I want to see you in my jersey after games and I want your love, any that you’re willing to give me.”
“Nate…” Your hand moved to his jawline and lightly traced it. “Why didn’t you just say that a week ago?”
“Because he’s a dumbass!” Mikko yelled from around the corner and you laughed while Nate’s cheeks flushed as red as Cale’s got on the ice.
“What he said,” He mumbled and you pressed a long kiss on his cheek.
“Just don’t be a dumbass again, okay?” Nate smiled and wrapped his arms around you, bringing your head into the crook of his neck and he whispered into your ear.
“Never again.”

(gif not mine)
You barged into Nate’s house, not even bothering to knock, “Hello to you too, Y/N.” He joked.
“How’d it go?” Payton asked, patting the spot next to her on the couch.
“It was horrible.” You sat down next to her. She handed you her glass of wine, and you took a large gulp.
“Why was it horrible?” She asked. You leaned your head on her shoulder, and she began stroking your hair.
“He was a jerk. He was one of those narcissistic jerks who only talks about himself, and when he finally stopped running his mouth enough for me to get a sentence in, he interrupted and then went back on this long rant about how he didn’t really want to be there.” You ranted.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Payton continued stroking your hair.
“And on top of all of that-”
“Oh, but wait, there’s more.” Nate voiced from the kitchen.
“-He made me split the bill with him.” You finished.
“Do you want to stay the night?” She asked.
“Yes.” You looked up at her with a small pout.
“Nate, you’re taking the guest room.” She told her boyfriend,
“What?!” He shouted. Payton scolded up, and he stopped whining.
-
It had been a few weeks since your bad date, and you had honestly forgotten about it. That night you had Payton had really just had a girl’s night. You watched cheesy movies, drank wine, and talked about your crappy love life, or lack-there-of.
“Okay, I got you a date,” Payton told you as she walked into your apartment.
“Who?” You asked.
“Erik.” She answered with a shrug as she sat down next to you.
“Erik who?” You asked.
“Erik Johnson, EJ, Nate’s teammate.” You looked over at her wide-eyed, “What?” She asked innocently.
“No, no, no.” You shook your head violently, “I can’t do that.”
“Why not?”
“Um, hello! It’s Erik freaking Johnson.” You stated as if it was obvious.
“So?”
"Payton, this isn’t just some loser off the street. This is Erik Johnson, the alternate captain for the Avs.” You panicked.
“Well, so is Nate.” Payton pointed out.
“Yeah, but that’s Nate.” You brushed it off, “God, Payton.”
“I’m not seeing your point.” She looked at you confused.
“I’m gonna hit you so hard.” You deadpanned.
“Please don’t. There’s a game later tonight that you will hopefully come to, and I can’t get rid of a bruise that quick.” She joked.
“I swear to God, Payton.” You spoke through gritted teeth.
“Yay!” She clapped.
“If he’s another jerk-”
“I’ll kick his ass for you.” She smiled.
“I need a drink.” You groaned, running a hand over your face as you got up and trudged towards the kitchen.
-
You were waiting in the hall in front of the locker room with the rest of the WAGs, who were waiting for their partners. You felt very out of place and a little uncomfortable. Your hands were in your pockets as you looked around at everything and everyone around you.
When the guys started coming out of the locker room, you felt a little better. It meant you would get to go home, “Y/N.” Payton called your name. You turned around, seeing her waving you over. You saw she was talking to Erik Johnson, and you almost passed out right there.
“Y/N, this is Erik.” She introduced you, “EJ, this is my best friend in the whole entire world, Y/N.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” You smiled.
“You, too.” He smiled back. You had seen that smile on videos and photos, but seeing it in person, you could’ve melted right then and there.
“Well, she’ll be seeing you soon.” Payton smiled at him, and that was that.
-
Nervous wouldn’t even begin to describe what you were feeling. You were actually scared. This wasn’t some low-life jerk, this was a professional athlete. A really good-looking professional athlete.
“What about this one?” You asked, pulling out another shirt.
“You’re going on a date, not to a country club.” Payton joked.
you continued digging through your closet, “What about this one?”
“That one’s good. Now to find pants.” Payton got up from your bed and began rooting through all your clothes. It took her a few minutes, but she finally found the pants, “These ones.” She spotted a pair of shoes lying in the corner of your closet, “And these ones.” She shoved the small pile of clothes at you, then pushed you in the direction of the bathroom.
You stumbled over your feet for a second, but caught yourself, glaring at her from over your shoulder. You quickly got dressed, and straightened out your clothes, “How’s this?” You asked, walking out of the bathroom.
“It looks good. You look great.” Payton smiled at you, grabbing a lint roller and rolling your clothes.
“Thank you. I feel like I’m gonna pass out.” You sighed.
“Well, take a deep breath, because he just said he’s pulling into the parking lot.” She watched your eyes widened, “Okay, breath, breath.” She told you, “You’re gonna be fine. He’s not some jerk, he’s a great guy.” She reassured you.
“I know.” You nodded.
“Just take a deep breath.” She told you, taking a deep breath with you. The knock on your door sounded throughout your whole apartment, “Go open the door, and greet him.” She pushed you in the direction of the door.
“Okay.” You took a deep breath. Your hand shook as you went to open the door. When you opened the door, you were greeted by a nice bouquet of Daisies. Your favorite flowers.
“Hi.” You smiled.
“Hi.” He smiled, “Um, these are for you. I heard that they were your favorite.” He scratched the back of his neck as he held out the flowers.
“Thank you.” You smiled brightly, taking the flowers from him, “Do you want to come in? I have to just put these in water and we can be on our way.”
“Sure.” He nodded. You let him enter your apartment, watching as he looked around at all your decorations, “Nice place.” He commented.
“Thanks.” You grabbed a small vase and set the flowers in it. Payton walked out of your room.
“Have her home by 11,” Payton told Erik.
“I will.” Erik nodded.
“Don’t get her too drunk. She’s not nice when she’s hungover.”
“I won’t.” Erik nodded again.
“Please don’t lose her either. We lost her at an amusement park because she found a lost dog. It was cute, but we almost called the police. She wanders around a lot.” Payton told him.
“I’ll make sure to keep an eye on her all night.” Erik winked.
“Okay, I’m right here.” You looked at both of them, fake offended.
“I’ll see you soon. I love you.” Payton kissed your head.
“Love you too.” You smiled, “Let’s go now before she gets emotional.” You told Erik, who chuckled and led you to the car.
You were in the middle of putting your seatbelt on, “So, you and Payton are close?” He asked.
“The closest.” You nodded, “It’s always been us since we were kids.”
“That’s kinda cool.” Erik smiled, starting the car.
“It is.” You nodded.
-
The next morning, you were buzzing. The date went great. He was a great guy. A true gentleman. You stormed into Nate and Payton’s house and opened their bedroom door where they were still asleep.
You got on the bed, and started jumping, “Wake up!” You jumped, and they both woke up instantly.
“Y/N!” Nate shouted.
“This is your early morning wake-up call!” You sang, continuing to jump.
“Your date. How'd it go?” Payton asked, enthusiasm in her voice. You stopped jumping and sat down next to her.
“It was great.” You gushed.
“That’s my sign to leave.” Nate got out of bed, “I’ll start breakfast. Are you gonna stay?” He asked.
“Yes, please. And scrambled please.” You told him.
“Yes, your majesties.” He joked, slowly making his way to the kitchen.
“So, your date?” Payton asked, grabbing the box of cereal on the nightstand, and offering you some.
“It was great.” You popped some cereal in your mouth, “He paid, first of all, which is a huge green flag. He actually listened to me talk. He laughed at my jokes, he showed me pictures of his dog and all his horses, and you know how much I love animals, especially dogs.”
“It sounds like it went really well.” Payton nodded, happy and satisfied with herself for setting this date up.
“It was amazing.” You beamed.
“Did he kiss you? Is there a second date?” Payton asked, tossing more cereal in her mouth excitedly.
“He kissed me on the cheek, and gave me his number.” You stated.
“So, the balls in your court?” She asked.
“Yeah.” You nodded, leaning back in the bed.
“So...” Payton leaned back with you, “What are you gonna do?”
“I have no idea. This has never happened. I’ve never agreed to a second date. I’ve never even gotten a goodnight kiss, let alone a ride home.” You reminded her.
“Here’s what you’re gonna do.” Payton grabbed your phone and began a new chat with Erik.
-
“I’m glad you texted back.” Erik and you were walking through a park after just having dinner at a restaurant that was way too expensive for you. But Erik, being the gentleman he was, paid the bill.
“I had a really good time last time.” You smiled, holding onto his arm, and linking both of your hands together.
“I had a good time, too.” He smiled back over you. You looked up and saw you were standing under a gondola lit up with fairy lights. It was cliche, but you couldn’t care less.
Just as you were about to kiss, your phone rang. You groaned in your head, and  reached into your bag and pulled out your phone, “Hello?” You answered.
“Hi, it’s Nate.”
“Oh, hi, Nate.” Your brows furrowed together in confusion.
“Yeah, hi. I know you're in the middle of a date and all, but I really need your help.” He sounded frantic.
“Okay, what is it?” You asked.
“It’s about Payton.” That caught your attention.
“Okay, what is it?”
“Well, she came home a few minutes ago, and locked herself in the bathroom, and started crying. I don't know why and I don’t know what to do.” He told you.
“Okay, okay.” You ran a hand through your hair.
“Can you please come over?” He begged. You looked up at Erik, who nodded his head, just as worried as you were.
“Yeah, I’ll see you in a bit.” You told him and hung up. You hung up, “Can you-”
“Of course.” He nodded, offering you his hand, and leading you in the direction of the car.
“I’m really sorry, Erik.”
“No, please don’t apologize. It’s not your fault.” He shook his head.
“Thank you for this.” You smiled, and looked out the window, wracking your brain, trying to figure out what could be the problem.
-
The moment Erik stopped the car, you were bolting out and running into the house. You almost ran into the door at the speed you were running at. You pushed open the door and past Nate.
Erik had put the car in park and locked the door. He got out of the car, and followed you into the house, and greeted Nate, “Sorry for interrupting your date.”
“It’s fine, really,” Erik reassured him.
“So, you really like her?” Nate asked.
“Yeah, I do.” Erik nodded.
“Then you should know that they’re even closer than best friends, they’re sisters. They’ll have sleepovers together with you in bed. Y/N’ll kick you out of bed if Payton asks her to.”
“Are you speaking on all of this from experience?” Erik raised a brow.
“Yes, I am. She kicked me out of bed a few days ago because they needed a good girl’s night. My own bed.” Nate annunciated.
“All right, I get it.” Erik nodded.
“Just treat her right, man. I’ve seen her come over after horrible dates, and then the night after your first date, she came over and was really happy. Just treat her right.” Nate told him.
They could hear you trying to get Payton to open the door from the kitchen, “It’s fine. If you don’t want to open the door, I’ll just stay here all night.”
“No you won’t,” Payton shouted from the other side.
“You bet your ass I will.” You retorted. Payton signed, and reluctantly opened the door, “What’s wrong, honey?”
“I’m scared.” She pouted.
“Why are you scared?” You asked, sliding down the wall next to her, and shutting the door.
“I think I’m pregnant.” She whispered, leaning her head on your shoulder.
It took you a second to comprehend what she said, and fully process what she said, “Why are you scared?”
“What if he’s not ready?”
“He’s ready. And if he’s not, we’ll break up with him and move to Italy and live out our dream life there.” You joked.
“You wouldn’t move to Italy for me.”
“You're right. Maybe Cabo.” You joked, and that got Payton to smile, “There’s that smile I know and love so much.”
“I’ll tell him.” She sniffled, “Sorry about your date.”
“Oh, it's fine.” You shrugged and fell into conversation about how your day went.
-
It turned out that Payton was pregnant, and Nate couldn’t be more than thrilled. You and Erik had been dating for a little over 2 months, and they were the best two months ever. You had met his dog and of course his horses.
“I’m home, Jessie!” You sang as soon as you stepped into Erik’s house. His golden retriever Jessie ran towards the entrance at the sound of your voice.
“I’m here, too,” Erik spoke, leaning in the doorway, watching the dog crawl and lick all over you.
“Yeah, that’s cool.” You continued to pet his dog, “Hi, pretty girl.” You scratched behind her ears.
“So, did you come over to see my dog or come see me?” Erik asked.
“Jessie, of course.” You stated sarcastically.
“That’s fine. I guess I’ll just take myself to that show tonight.” Erik joked.
“No, no. Of course, I’m here to see you.” You bolted up from the ground.
Erik laughed, “Come on, baby.” He wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pressed a kiss to the side of your head, and led you back outside towards his car.
-
You and Erik were sitting on the couch, on the verge of falling asleep as a re-run of Criminal Minds played in the background. Erik didn’t understand your love of true crime, but he didn’t question it.
You were both jolted away by your phone ringing loudly on the table. You groaned, turning away from the loud noise. Erik reached over and answered your phone for you, “Y/N’s phone.”
“Oh, crap.” Erik started patting your shoulder, “Wake up.” He told you, “Okay, we’ll be there soon.” He quickly hung up, then worked on getting you awake.
“What?” You moaned.
“Payton’s in labor.” That got you up. You sat up so quick Erik’s head actually spun. You grabbed your phone, then bolted towards the front door, and got your shoes and jacket on.
“Well, come on, Johnson. Get your ass moving.” You threw him his jacket and grabbed your bag and keys from the hook. That got Erik moving. He quickly got his jacket on, then put on his shoes and you two were out the door.
-
You snuck into Payton’s room while Nate was out getting ice chips. The rest of their family, as well as a few teammates, were waiting in the waiting room. When she saw you, she smiled and patted the empty slot of her bed.
“Hi.” She smiled tiredly.
“I’m not gonna ask how you are because I know the answer to that question already.” You sat down and grabbed her hand.
“That’s a smart idea.” She smirked, then winced.
“Oh gosh, are you okay? Do I need to call a nurse? The doctor? Nate?” You panicked.
“No, I’m good. It’s just a contraction, calm down.” She chuckled.
“Okay, okay.” You breathed out.
“So, listen, now that you’re here, I wanted to ask you something.” She told you.
“Oh, is it bad? Am I in trouble?” You asked.
She smiled, “No, you’re not in trouble. It’s good, I promise.” She reassured, “Nate and I were talking-well it was more like me trying to convince Nate-we wanted you to be this baby’s godmother.” That took you back.
You stared at her for a moment, trying to comprehend what she said, “Y/N?” She asked.
“You want me to be their godmother?” You asked.
“Yeah, I mean you’re my best friend, practically my sister.” Payton shrugged.
You felt tears form in your eyes, “God, of course, I’ll be their godmother.” You nodded, leaning forward and hugging her.
“I love you.” She squeezed you a little.
“Love you too.” You reached between you both and caressed her stomach.
-
A few hours later, you were sitting in the waiting room. Her parents had gone to their hotel since it was getting late with the promise of coming back tomorrow to come to see the baby. Everyone else had gone home as well, with the same promise of visiting the baby.
“You wanna go home?” Erik asked.
You shook your head, “I’m not leaving Payton.” You told him as you leaned your head on his lap, laying across a few chairs.
“Okay, then try to get some sleep.” He leaned down to press a kiss to your head. You hummed, shutting your eyes.
A few hours later, Nate came out and when he saw Erik and you, he broke out into a smile, “So, what’s the verdict?” Erik joked.
“It’s a boy.” Nate beamed.
“Oh, congrats, man.” Erik gave him a hi-five, trying to be careful as to not wake you up, “How’s Payton?”
“She’s good. Tired, but happy.”
“I’m really happy for you,” Erik spoke as he caressed your hair.
“So…” Nate started.
“So, what?” Erik asked.
“You ever think about starting a family?” Nate asked.
“Whoa, we’ve only been together for 8 months. We just got spots in each other’s closets.” Erik joked.
“That’s not an answer.” Nate started, “I started thinking about having kids with Payton 6 months into our relationship.”
“Did you?”
“Yeah, and now here we are, 2 years later.” Erik sat there, thinking about what his teammate said, then looked back down at you and knew exactly what Nate was talking about.
-
“Meet Damien Spencer Mackinnon.” Payton beamed as she showed off the new baby.
“Spencer? After Spencer Reid?” You chuckled.
“Our first love.” She laughed along with you, then looked from her son to you, “Do you wanna hold him?”
“Can I?” You asked.
“Well, I’m sure Damien wants to meet his godmother.” Payton nodded.
You took Damien from her, and stared in awe at the new bundle in your arms, “Hi, Damien. I’m your godmother, or aunt, whichever you prefer. I’m the one you come to when mom and dad say no.” You joked.
“Y/N...” Nate reprimanded.
“I’m kidding.” You smiled innocently, then leaned in closer, “I’m not.” Damien opened his eyes and looked at you for the first time, “Hi.” The biggest smile Erik had ever seen in his life appeared on your face as you interacted with the new baby.
Payton watched him with careful eyes. Watching the way he smiled at the jokes you told Damien even though he was still too small to understand. She watched as only a look of love filled his eyes.
-
“Are they here yet, mommy?” Damien asked.
“Almost, now stop asking.” Payton handed both her children juice boxes and sent them back to the living room so she could finish cleaning.
The second the doorbell rang Caitlyn and Damien were bolting to the door, practically tearing it off its hinges. The moment Damien and Timothy saw each other, they were running inside the house and outside to the backyard.
“It’s good to see you too, Damien.” You called after him sarcastically.
Caitlyn smiled at your little girl, Annalise, and the two of them linked hands and walked inside towards the Mackinnon playroom. You, Erik, and your one-year-old Anthony standing in their doorway, watching your children run off in different directions.
You looked back at Anthony, who gave you a toothy smile, “At least I still have you.” You hugged him close to your chest.
“Hi.” Payton smiled, pulling you into a hug, “Hi, bud.” She ruffled Anthony’s hair.
“I’m gonna go check on the little devils.” Erik walked outside to the garden.
“Don’t call our children that, Erik.” You hollered after him, to which he only smirked, “Where’s Nate?” You asked, walking with Payton towards the kitchen.
“I sent him out to get tomatoes and garlic. He was annoying me, so I sent him out.” She shrugged.
Anthony was starting to get fussy, so you walked over to her fridge and pulled out a container of blueberries, “You want some blueberries, Anthony?” You asked, looking over at your son. He clapped his hands and cheered when he saw what you were holding, “Okay, okay, we’ll get blueberries.”
You rinsed them and put them into a bowl, then placed them in front of Anthony, who dug in. You turned back to Payton, “So, you ever gonna thank me?” She smirked, leaning on the counter.
“Thank you? For what?” You asked.
“All those years ago, I was the one who set you up with Erik.” She shrugged.
You rolled your eyes, “Whatever.” You continued to feed Anthony his blueberries, “I love you a lot, Payton.”
“I love you too, Y/N.” Payton smiled, pulling you into a side hug.

“You look amazing.” - You recently gave birth to twin boys. When they fall asleep you decide to fit in your wedding dress, than Nathan Walks in.
A/N: I changed a slight thing: I made the twins already a few months old, so kind of, Y/N and Nate are more comfortable with parenthood, you know? Hope you like it still.
Requested by @leospinkprint - I just copy pasted into a ask to make it easier.
Wedding dress - Nathan Mackinnon

Rough doesn't even come close to describe these last few months. Being a parent for the first time is hard, really hard. You go through countless sleepless nights, and moments where you question so many things that you probably even question your own name.
But you don't have only one kid, oh no, you have twins. Which means double the trouble.
You felt like breaking down a few good times, to be quite honest. And that's probably just the first week.
Okay, okay. Maybe, that's a bit too harsh. You love your two baby boys more than anything. And you do feel like you were blessed to have them in your life. But, even though they are just 5 months old, they are able to tire the hell out of you.
Well, both you and Nathan.
Nathan, who works away from home for a good part of the year, feels bad for leaving you alone at home for, sometimes, weeks all because of roadies.
One baby can be hard on their own, from what he has heard from his teammates, but two?
Pity sometimes can’t even come to describe how he feels when you call him late at night - for your daily facetime call - with a sleepy look on your face.
Especially when you end up falling asleep while he stops talking for just a second. Even though it's rare, it breaks his heart when it happens.
He feels awful, overall. So, he tries to do the most when he gets home.
From forcing you to sit down on the couch to let him take care of the boys, from almost having to lock you in the bedroom so he can do breakfast for all of you, Nate really tries his best at making you feel better.
And today was no different. It started with Nate having to shove his phone under his pillow so you couldn’t hear his blasting alarm.
All because he wanted to wake up early and get some of your stuff done. And amazingly, he was able to not awake you.
He checked on the boys, took an extremely quick shower, and got started on breakfast, while at the same time, always trying to focus to see if he could hear any crying or even you walking around.
Like expected, not even 20 minutes after Nate left the bed, you appeared by the kitchen doorway. You gave him a sleepy smile and soon wrapped your arms around him and hid your face on his chest.
Nathan just felt overly thankful for how long you two were able to stay like that before the boys woke up. It was all just so relaxing and calming that you two swore you could fall back asleep right there and then.
When the boys woke up, you two decided to split activities. Each one took care of a boy, which was a lot easier than what you're used to. Nate decided to be the one to give the boys a bath while you took care of the food. All as a team effort.
The boys aren’t very ‘chaotic’, as Nate would say, in the mornings. So, they didn’t exactly ruin the calming atmosphere you two created. They kind of stayed in it as well.
And that’s exactly how the morning went.
Now, in the middle of the afternoon, you’ve found yourself not being able to stay still. Not surprising.
And what did you decide to do to kill off your sudden need to move?
Clean your closet.
Oh, and Nate’s judging the heck out of you too.
Who in their right mind would decide to just clean stuff on a Sunday? You, his wife. That’s who would do that.
You feel a bit sweaty, obviously tired with all you’ve organized or actually stored away due to it being winter clothes. And it's when you’re almost about to stand back on your feet, that your eyes notice something.
A black box. Kind of expensive looking one, too.
Curiosity crawls under your skin and you grab it, pulling it towards you and away from it’s hiding place, a dark corner of one of the wardrobes.
It takes you just a second to recognize what it is.
How did you even forget what this is?
You open the box carefully and your heart tightens at the sight of the white delicate lace. Your wedding dress.
You haven’t seen it in so long that it almost seems unreal.
Your hands reach to touch it, finding the feeling of the fabric slightly odd under your fingertips after so long. It’s almost been 2 years since you got married with the love of your life, yet you still find it out of this world.
As memories color your mind and make your body feel all sorts of giddy emotions, you pull by its little straps up to lift the dress from the box and you almost sigh.
It still looks so beautiful.
You surely picked the right dress.
Your smile stretches as you can’t help but remember when you walked down the isle. From the teary eyed look Nathan gave you throughout the whole ceremony to the way he held your hand tightly close to him, almost as if fighting off his nerves and anxiety.
Everything just makes you smile widely.
Quickly, you stand back up on your feet, dress still in your hands and you carefully take it with you to the mirror. With your smile still in your face, you turn the dress towards the mirror and hold it in front of you.
“What’you doing?”
The sudden voice makes you jump on your feet and send a glare towards your husband, who is smiling proudly at how he was able to startle you all the way back under the closet's doorway.
You look back to the mirror and Nathan decides to step inside the closet.
“I found my dress.” You shrugged, not holding it in front of you anymore, “Just wanted to see it again.”
A little grin lifts the corner of his lips and he looks at you through the mirror.
“Do you still like it?” He asks, leaning back against the wall beside you.
“A little too much, I think.” You tell him with a smile.
He mimics your smile and looks down at the dress in your hands.
“Have you tried it on, again?” He asks.
You look away from the mirror to look at him with a slight scowl over your features.
“No...” You say, following his gaze back to the beautiful dress.
“Do you want to?”
“Yeah, but it probably won’t even fit.” You tell him, lifting your gaze back to him.
Nathan looks back at you, this time not mimicking any of your expressions.
“So...?” He shrugs at you, “Wouldn’t hurt to try, would it?”
You bite your lips in thought, and look back at the dress in question.
What if you ruin some kind of image you have of the dress?
It’s no lie that you’ve gained weight because of your pregnancy, and like any other mother, you’ve struggled with your body image and even confidence from time to time, all because of how it changed.
Fear is exactly what you’re feeling, right now. And it's not all that easy to swallow.
“Don’t overthink it.” He tells you, “Just do it if you want to.”
You take a deep breath and do as told.
“Can you help me?”
Nate nods quickly and you hand him to dress. He takes a hold of it, delicately, and stands aside as you take off your usual stay-at-home-all-day clothing, which is severely oversized and most probably Nathan’s.
He hands it back to you when you ask for it with just a slight hand gesture and he walks to stand behind you. You hesitate to look in the mirror for the seconds that you’re pulling it up or adjusting it as Nate starts doing the back.
When Nathan stops moving behind you, you two seem to look up at the mirror at the same time. Your eyes meet for the first few seconds, but soon it went to you and the dress.
“See?” He asks.
You bite your smile in and Nathan does the opposite, smiling at you widely.
Sure, the dress didn't look exactly like it did on your wedding day. But your body changed. And even though it has been through some changes, you still look good in it. No matter if it zips up completely or not. You like what you're seeing and that's what matters.
“You still fit in it and you still look just as beautiful.”
Yeah, there’s no holding back a smile there. Not only do you like it, but so does Nathan, aka your personal hype-man.
“You really think so?”
“Of course, I do.”
You smile brightly at the man that is standing behind you through the mirror and turn back to look at him, now, eye to eye.
His hand comes to rest over your waist and he looks back at you.
“Thank you” You whisper at him, “I love you so much.”
“Good, because the feeling is mutual.” He says in a slightly playful tone.
You giggle slightly and your lips finally touch as he lays a kiss.

Hope this was good and that you liked it. So sorry that it took me so long to finish it.

when you got pregnant you worried about a lot of things, such as your child health, your back pains, your cravings, and morning sickness, you even worried about what would be the best toys for them and about the specific lilac color you wanted to paint the room but didn’t seem to find anywhere, you even cried for the latter, but you never considered that you should’ve worried about your husband’s reaction during birth.
When you first met Nate some of your close friends (teammates of his) even warned that he could be too much inside his head at times, mack himself told you that he wasn’t really romantic or soft per see, but he promised you to try his best, and to be honest, you were aware of his love language and you knew the feeling was mutual so it really didn’t bother you the fact that he could classify according to people as the stone-cold type (which wasn’t the truth at all).
However, you noticed things started to change ever since you discovered you were expecting. Nathan became more and more cautious around you, he would always text and call you to know if things were ok, he would order take out to your place when he was traveling with the team, and he would go as far as to never disconnect the facetime call when both of you were about to sleep “in case you feel bad, I’ll be quick to wake and Idk I can call an ambulance or keep you company”, and that he did. You remember one time you woke up, not in pain or whatever but craving one of those hamburgers with fries and just the noise of your keys and door woke him.
Nathan tried his best to always be around to doctor appointments (one time he missed practice because it was the first time you would be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat).
But never did he give you the impression that labor wasn’t something that comfortable for him. He wasn’t afraid of it per see, or at least that’s what he told you while you waited for him at the hospital, Nate connected on the car’s Bluetooth while Erik, who were driving, and Josty joined the conversation.
“You have to see his face now, y/n, he’s completely red…” Erik joke and you could hear Nate cursing before going back to ask if things were ok with you -which you answered yes while holding back a cry when your baby just kicked again in a haste to finally leave your belly-.
The boys gave you a good laugh while driving to the hospital and fighting one another, first your boyfriend complaining about the car’s speed (which according to him was too slow, a comment that Erik answered telling him that he was already at the speed limit and Josty fueled the fire saying that he should go over it because it was an emergency), then Josty kept making fun of how nervous his teammate was and then Erik started talking about the day one of his horses gave birth and how weird the whole process was, but also beautiful, “just like it’s gonna be with y/n” and you would definitely be offended if it wasn’t for the fact that he was your friend too and you knew how much he loved his horses (that is, he meant no harm with the comment, and it would take some minutes before he realizes that it wasn’t the appropriate thing to say), Mackinnon otherwise find it very rude and asked if Erik was insinuating that his baby was going to be a foal (that was the moment when Tyson started wheezing and you lost it all laughing along).
Only when they got to the hospital and inside your room, you were able to notice how agitated Nate was and when you tried to assure him things were ok but you failed to send the right message because the baby decided it was a good time to increase your contractions things went downhill. Tyson who was giggling at his teammate’s tense mood got all silent when the rush inside the room started.
Your boyfriend’s right hand was holding yours while his left was busy holding Erik’s -this almost made you laugh, if not for the amount of pain you were feeling-. You never thought you would give birth with that scene unfolding in front of you. Nate sitting beside you, Erik’s standing beside him gave Tyson some kind of lecture (Tyson was now leaning on the wall and seemed nervous too).
“Are you afraid of birth, baby?” you asked while Nate kept looking at where the doctors were. “I’m not afraid per see, you know, just...the whole process is kinda...I don’t know, I think I’m afraid with what the outcome may be” he rambles and you smile lightly before kissing his knuckles.
Every time the doctor told you to push harder Nate would grip your hand tighter and you would suppress the will to giggle with the whole situation. During some moments you would let out a small laugh and the doctors would make a comment too, all while Nate’s big and tense form waited anxiously for the baby to finally come to the world. And no matter how funny things were, you were actually glad to have not only your partner there but two of your best friends too, the mood was so much lighter with them around. and it was no surprise when the first whine was heard, their shoulders relaxed at the same time yours did too and Erik said that foals were born in silence, that things couldn’t be better and you were glad for the amount of love you and your baby had.

i’m sorry if i took you for granted - nathan mackinnon
nate begins to take you for granted, spelling the end of your relationship
pairing: nathan mackinnon x reader
warnings: angst, unresolved angst, it’s not a happy ending, alcohol, breakups
word count: 1.6k
a/n: this was supposed to get a happy ending, but it’s been months and i dig the unresolved ending. for @officialgritty for helping me end this thing
Tumblr media
Sometimes you miss him even when he’s right there with you, it’s like he’s still thousands of miles away even as his hands find your waist in the dark.
You press your lips to his, but it’s like kissing stone. His hand on your thigh is warm, but it lacks any sort of purpose, more akin to a coincidental place for his hand to rest than an intentional hold. You don’t know what you’ve done, but his eyes don’t shine bright with love for you anymore. Rather it’s something like familiarity and comfort, but you don’t want comfort you want love and fire and passion. You want to look at him and positively feel his love wash over you, want to see adoration reflected back to you alongside an easy grin. It’s not there, and it hasn’t been there for months. Despite your best efforts to rekindle the flame, the coals of your love are cooling, the scent of a blown out candle lingering in the air.
He won’t break up with you, though. You know it, and he knows it and everyone around you knows it as they beg for you to put yourself first and end things when he won’t. But you love him and you think if he would just put the barest amount of effort in too he would remember that he loved you once. That once your smile lit up his whole world, that once coming home to you was the best feeling in the world, better than hoisting that elusive cup.
He doesn’t try anymore and you don’t know why. Date nights don’t happen, and even when they’re planned, without fail he breaks those plans. Too busy with the boys or hockey or prior commitments or his family. Yet every time you trust that this time he’ll show up for you. You dress in new lingerie sets that he never gets to see, pull on your prettiest dresses, wear your hair in the way he likes it, and apply his favourite shade of lipstick on you. You wear the earrings he got you for your birthday and the necklace he gave you on your anniversary and the bracelet you’d gotten two Christmases ago.
Once he waits long enough to cancel that you’re just finishing the last touches, placing delicate gold hoops in your ears as he bursts through the doors with the boys in tow. Your heart falls into your stomach as the familiar feeling of disappointment floods your veins and you know Cale and Josty see the way your face falls even if Nate doesn’t. “You don’t mind, baby, do you?” he asks, and like the dutiful girlfriend you say of course not, but you storm out of the apartment and call your best friend to meet you for dinner and drinks instead. You pay with his credit card because goddamn it if he’s not willing to take you out he’s going to pay for it. He doesn’t text you at all that night, not even when you slip into your best friend’s bed beside her rather than your bed at home as you cry onto her shoulder.
He doesn’t try anymore, when they’re gone on roadies he barely texts, never facetimes. In the beginning of your relationship, he was on you like glue, calling you every night before bed to see your sweet smile. He used to send you pictures of dogs because they reminded him of you, but if you were to look in your phone the last message you got from him was a noncommittal response to ‘do you want anything from the grocery store?’
He doesn’t try anymore, and yet he’s surprised when he returns from the west coast to find your things gone. All that’s left is your keyring on the table alongside the earrings he got you for your birthday and the necklace he gave you on your anniversary and the bracelet you’d gotten two Christmases ago.
He thought that next offseason he’d take you home with him and propose out on the lake and if you could just get through this season he would give you the attention you were looking for. He’s not an idiot, he knew he wasn’t taking care of you the way he should have, but he kind of just always thought you’d be there. After a disappointing end to last season, Bednar was on all of their asses and he had to focus his attention there. Then there were the rookies that he had taken under his wing - homesick and young in a city they didn’t know, he felt like he was the guy to be there for them. There was always drama with his family to deal with, and he felt bad that he couldn’t be there for his mom whenever she needed him and so that took his attention too.
He was so comfortable with you, in your relationship that he incorrectly wagered that you would be able to weather the storm together until he could get it all together. And maybe if he had confided in you just how full his plate was, maybe you would have understood. But as it stood, you felt just like those rookies, all alone in a city where the only people you knew were associated with him, miles away from your family because you had followed him so that he could live his dream.
It’s heartbreaking, the feeling of an empty apartment now totally void of your overwhelming presence. Your candles are gone, and so is your fuzzy blanket that used to hang over the loveseat. Your half of the closet lays empty except for the jerseys he’d gifted you, and there’s no fruity smelling shampoo in the shower.
You go home to Nova Scotia, tail tucked between your legs as you finally do what everyone who loved you had been begging you to do, dreading the inevitable wave of ‘I told you sos’ that never come. Your mom smooths down your hair like you’re a child again, and your dad grumbles that he never liked that kid anyway even though he’s lying. Your brother threatens him which is just comical considering just how much bigger Nate is, and your little sister shares her Ben and Jerry’s ice cream with you which means more to you than she’ll ever know. You scrub every mention of Nate and the Avalanche from all your social media pages and block the number of every person associated with him and the organization except for Cale. Sweet Cale who checks on you and makes sure you’re okay without ever mentioning Nate or hockey or overwhelming you. You don’t watch hockey, but you know they get knocked out of the playoffs first round, and you know that Nate will be making his way home soon. The thought sickens you, anxiety washes over you at the thought of going grocery shopping and running into the man who had stopped loving you.
You spot his mom in a bookstore of all places, she’s shopping with Nate’s sister, and your fight or flight instinct has you abandoning a cart full of books in favour of sprinting out the exit. You’re pretty sure she spots you, but you can’t face the woman you used to call mom who once told you that she couldn’t wait for it to be official.
It takes a while, but your friends manage to get you to go out with them a few months after your return home. You go on a few dates, but none of them stick until you let a friend set you up with her coworker. His name is Josh and he’s all blonde hair and blue eyes, soft edges and kind eyes, and the opposite of Nate in every way. It’s not fire or passion, and it feels a lot like the comfortable love you had been trying to avoid, but he pays you attention and buys you flowers and it’s nice to feel wanted after the love of your life let you fall off his list of priorities.
You’re sitting on the patio of your favourite restaurant with Josh, a pitcher of your favourite white sangria between the two of you when Nate sees you again. You’re letting some blond douchebag hold your hand and there’s a smile on your face that he hadn’t seen in months, long before you’d left him. It sends a chill through his entire body as he watches you be happy with someone who isn’t him. Cale had said you were doing okay, but Nate didn’t think you were this okay. This wasn’t the way things were supposed to go - you should have been walking tucked into his side right now, your right arm around his back and your left hand resting on his chest. You’d still be unused to the giant rock he would have put on your finger, softly smiling every time it caught the light and reflected against the clear stone. But Nate never got the chance and he never would. He’d taken you for granted and now some idiot had his hands all over you. He stands there long enough for you to make eye contact, your smile dimming slightly, but then you blink twice and refocus your attention on your date, pretending like you wouldn’t take it all back if he asked. He thinks about approaching you, calling your name, and begging to make things right. But the thought of being the reason that smile on your face dims is enough to have him shoving his hands in his pockets and walking away from you once again.

Your job was simple and fun. Working at PPG paints arena was always fun. Fun. It made you cringe thinking about it. You were an ice girl. Why it made you cringe wasn’t something you could give an answer for. Maybe you didn’t have the body to be one or the talents, yet here you were.
It was the home opener. First game of the season for Pittsburgh was home and that made your insides flutter. Being an ice girl made you cringe. Being an ice girl for the Pittsburgh Penguins made you ecstatic. The arena wasn’t far, but you left early today. You wanted to take in the gorgeous arena and enjoy it. Your bag hung over your shoulder as you walked through the doors. Showing your pass they allowed you to walk around.
The concessions were preparing and the 50/50 crew was chatting it up. You smiled and went to walk past the locker rooms. You smiled and walked to head to the ice crews locker room. You bumped into someone and lost footing. You screwed your eyes shut in preparation for impact. Before you hit the ground a hand had already firmly grasped your arm and pulled you back on your feet.
“I’m sorry I should of watched where I was going”, they told you. You opened your eyes and there was Sidney Crosby.
“No no, I wasn’t paying attention that was my fault”, you stammered. He smiled at you. Sidney fucking Crosby just smiled at you.
“Really, it was my fault”, he insisted.
“I’ll take half the blame if you do”, you said quietly.
“I think I can live with that”, he told you with a big smile.
His smile made your stomach erupt into butterflies. He didn’t let go of your wrist.
“So, what brings you here?”, he asked you trying to make conversation.
“Just looking around on my way to the locker room”.
He turned on his heel and started walking with you. “You’re part of ice crew”?
You nodded. “Yep, I joined late last year”, you took a glance at him. He was focused ahead of him. “Your focused this time around”, you said with a nudge.
He laughed and nudged you back, “Maybe I should loose focus again, I might run into another pretty girl”. He winked but kept walking with you.
Your face went red. You reached the ice and your mouth gaped at everything going on. The preparation and the behind the scenes. “Wow Mr. Crosby this is just- wow”, you said in amazement.
“Mr. Crosby really”? You turned around to see his hands on his hips and his face painted with amusement.
“What am I supposed to call you? Sidney?”, you laughed and went to stand in front of him. His eyes glistened with mischief.
“Or-“, he was cut off by another voice.
“Y/N?”, Sidney turned around allowing you to look and see. Letang and Malkin were standing there.
“Oh my god!”, you squealed and ran up to them, hugging them both.
“How’s Alex and Victoria? And how’s Nikita”? Sidney stood behind you shocked.
You made small talk with the boys and walked with them back into the locker room. Sidney stayed quiet. The two hugged you and walked into their locker room. Sidney stood with you, burning holes into their backs.
“You look upset, are you okay?”, you whispered. The air was thick.
“Yes”, he said sharply. He looked at his watch and back at you. “I have to go”, he forced through his teeth. He opened the doors of the locker room and rushed in.
He left you standing in shock. Did Sidney Crosby really just do that?
When Sid walked in the boys were talking about you, glad that you became a permanent member of ice crew. It gave him a horrible feeling in the pit of his stomach.
“Sid you okay”, Geno called to him. Sid hadn’t even realized how angry his face looked and how roughly he was tying his skates.
“Yes Geno”, he seethed. Geno gave him a look but continued preparing to go on the ice.
“She’s really pretty”, Jake told Letang. Letang laughed and punched his shoulder gently.
“Ask her out then”, he teased.
Sid stood up and walked out of the locker room abruptly. He was half dressed and everyone gave him a look.
Sidney was going to get to you first. He heard the boys call after him but he was on a mission.
You walked out of the locker room feeling down. You peaked around the corner and saw Sid coming. And he looked pissed. Your heart jumped in your throat and your stomach sank. You turned swiftly and walked into the locker room.
Sidney saw you turn back into the locker room and his shoulders sank. You were avoiding him. His jealousy flipped into anger, sadness, and guilt. Geno walked up beside him. “Sid, you go and play. Sid score. Then talk to girl”, he said patting him on the back. “It almost time”.
~Time skip~
You watched the warmups. You were holding back tears and it angered you. Why were you upset? You talked to him for twenty minutes maybe?
Sidney had a hard time focusing. He really lost his cool and it was eating at him.
When the game started it was slow for the Penguins. Down by two in the first period.
He looked out the tunnel to see you skating on. He gnawed at his lip. You looked distressed but were forcing a happy face. He decided then and there that he was going to pull it together and win this game. His poor performance was affecting others. And although the had already been aware of that, something about seeing you on the ice made it real for him.
Second period started. Sid was pushed around on the ice a lot. He scored twice in the second and they were now almost through the third. It was tied with ten seconds left and he had the puck.
5 seconds left. Sid just shot it, praying it went in. In the blink of an eye the puck nestled in the back of the net.
Hat trick.
The arena roared. They rejoiced and screamed. Everything was going so fast but everything to Sidney felt like slow mo.
You stood in your position and cheered for your boys. Your heart swelled seeing them all jump on the ice and celebrate the first win of the season.
You finally had changed out of the uniform and were preparing to leave. You were always the last one. When you opened the locker room door Sidney stood directly in front of it. You froze. Perhaps you could pretend to forget something and turn around and wait awhile in the comfort of the locker room for him to leave.
“Can we talk”. It wasn’t a question and you knew it.
“Y-yea”, you stuttered. “I have to walk home and I don’t want to stay too late”, you mumbled.
“I can drive you”.
“It’s okay I’ll just walk”.
Sidney was staring intensely at your face. “I’ll rephrase that. I’m driving you home”, he said softly.
“Okay”. He reached for your bag expecting you to hand it over.
“I’ve got it”, you muttered and started walking.
“Give me the bag”, he said sternly.
You reluctantly gave him your bag, he visibly relaxed. He reached for your hand.
You pulled away from him. “Hand”, he stated simply.
“Do you think I’m a child or something. I’m 26 not 6”, you hummed.
“I’m sorry I just don’t want you drifting off to try and walk home”.
You sucked your teeth but grabbed his hand. Your hand was engulfed by his own. It felt right. “I’m sorry”, you mumbled.
He sighed. “I haven’t been exactly nice either”.
“Yea what happened earlier”, you asked. He started to gently swing your arms.
“I got jealous”, was his quiet reply. He seemed embarrassed.
“I don’t know if anyone told you but Tanger and Geno are both committed to some gorgeous women”, you teased leaning into him.
He smiled. “Jake said you were pretty and Kris encouraged him to ask you out”.
Pittsburgh’s wind hit you the second you walked outside. “No offence to Jake but he’s not my type”.
Sid looked hopeful. “What is your type then”?
Sid has you pinned against his car. “My type is tall, sweet, handsome Canadian”.
“Who would that be”?
“Nathan MacKinnon”, you said. Sid’s face fell.
“Nate?”, he said quietly.
“No idiot, your my type. I was pulling your leg”, you cupped his face in your hands.
“Come home with me”, he mumbled while leaning in to kiss you.
Your lips brushed gently. “I don’t think so Mister”, you smirked. He pulled at your bottom lip gently with his teeth.
“Please, we don’t have to do anything”, he mumbled. Your fingers started playing with his tie, you hummed in response.
“Please baby”, the words fell from his lips. He sounded tired.
“You need to sleep”, you smirked pulling away.
“I’ll be restless thinking about you. I won’t be able to sleep”, he said smirking and pulling you back in.
Sid was never one to rush into things. Especially a relationship. However you were screwing him up entirely. You messed his routine up. Now he was rushing to be with you.
Your hands travelled up his arms. “Take some NyQuil”, you hummed.
He laughed and connected your foreheads. “NyQuil really?”, he said with a chuckle.
“It works”, you laughed. Your fingers interlocked behind his neck.
“I can make you something to eat if you come”?
Lazily you blinked with a small smile. “Yea I’d really like that”.
Sid had a big smile on his face.
“With a glass of NyQuil”.
He giggled and kissed your jaw.
“I’m sure there are other ways I can tire you out”, he continued down your throat.
“Like?”, you inquired.
“A pillow fort”, Sid said passively.
“Really?”, you said in awe. Never would you think that Sidney Crosby would be one to make a pillow fort.
“Yea”, he mumbled.
“I’d like that”, you grinned and stroked his hair.
He smiled but said nothing more. He opened the car door for you. Thanking him, you got in, grateful.
He grabbed your hand and kissed the back of it while he drove.
“Good thing we were work friends”, you told him.
He looked over at you with a small smirk.
“Yea. Work friends”.

Selfish
Author: Nat / @idontgiveaflyinggrayson69
Requested: Yes – Anonymous
Fandom: NHL
Relationship: Established; Nathan MacKinnon x Reader
Summary: You’re accepted into a program in England. Nate doesn’t handle it well when you tell him.
Word Count: 1.1k
Warnings: Arguing (obvi)
Tumblr media
“You’re being selfish!” Nate shouted and you fell quiet, your eyes going wide for a moment before they hardened in anger as you looked at your boyfriend.
You and Nate were deep into an argument over your studies. You had applied to an internal relations program in England without telling him and you were offered a spot, a spot you wanted to take. Which is what you told him. And then he freaked out and the two of you had been arguing ever since.
“Selfish?” You whispered, taking a step back. “Did you just call me selfish?”
You could see Nathan’s jaw clench and he gripped the counter of the island that separated the two of you with white knuckles. “Yes.” He said, his voice cold. “I did.”
Your next action came to a surprise to the both of you: you slammed your fist down onto the counter hard enough that even Nate jerked in surprise. Your hand hurt, hurt a lot actually, but you didn’t let it show. Instead, you shook your head at your boyfriend, your boyfriend at you loved so much that it hurt you to the point of this anger.
“After everything I have done for you, all that I have given up for you, you have the audacity to look me in the eye and call me selfish?” You said, your voice dangerously calm.
Nate took a deep breath and uncurled his hands from the counter. “I pay for our rent, I take you on expensive trips, I take care of everything. And you repay me by wanting to move across the fucking ocean! Yeah, I would call that selfish!” There was nothing calm in his voice. There was nothing calm in his body language.
“You’re the one who asked me to move in with you. You’re the one who wouldn’t let me help with rent. You’re the one who wanted to do those trips. I never asked for it. Nathan, I…” You took a deep breath. “I didn’t know you felt like I was such a burden on you.”
His jaw went slack and he opened his mouth to reply, but you had more to say.
“You have no idea the number of opportunities I have been offered by the University, Nate.” His eyes lost their rage as you voice softened. “But, I turned them all down without hesitation foryou.”
“I didn’t…” He started weakly. “I didn’t know.”
You nodded and looked down for a moment before meeting his eyes again, your own rage sizzling out to a quiet sadness. “That’s because I never told you.”
The room fell into a thick silence. Nate bit the bullet and asked, “why?”
You shrugged weakly. “Because you’re a superstar. You one of the best players in the league and I love you and I would never want to take away from that. You make me so happy that it was worth passing on those opportunities. You made everything worth it.”
“I never wanted you to give anything up like that, I only ever wanted you to be happy.” He whispered, stepping around the island towards you. He gently put his hand on your arm and you jumped at his touch. Nate swallowed and took his hand back, but kept close.
“I am happy.” You whispered and looked up at him. “But this program…” You shook your head before looking down at the counter. “It’s so amazing and it’s like impossible to get into. That’s why I didn’t tell you, Nate, I didn’t think I’d get in.”
“What?” He breathed, lightly touching your hand. You didn’t jump at his touch, only shrugged. This gave him the confidence to spin you to face him before cupping your cheeks. “That’s insane. You’re amazing. Amazing at school, at life, everything really.”
“But the pro—” You started, but he interrupted you.
“The program would be lucky to have you.” He whispered slowly, a small smile twitching on his face. When you didn’t return his smile, he sighed. “I’m sorry for calling you selfish. That was untrue and uncalled for. You are the opposite of selfish.”
You shrugged, completely emotionally drained from the argument. “It’s okay.”
Nate shook his head. “No, no it’s not. Nothing I said was okay, so don’t say that it is. But, I will make it up to you, I promise. And…” He took a deep breath. “And you should go to England.”
You brought your eyes up to his, your eyebrows furrowing. “What?”
Nate took a shaky breath and nodded. “Yeah. You’re right, you’ve been here for me these past few years and it’s time for me to be there for you. You want to go to England? You should go. And I’ll support you one hundred percent the entire time. I promise.”
You gave him a weak smile and leaned up to press a light kiss to his cheek. “Thank you, it means a lot to me.”
His lips twitched up into a smile and he leaned down to press a kiss to your lips. It was soft and you melted into it, all the anger gone from the both of you. The kiss was over as quickly as it came and you let yourself lean into his chest, taking a deep breath and inhaling the comforting smell of him. It would be something you’ll miss when away.
“And, hey, I can visit you when the season’s over. I think England could be a fun trip. You go to school and study and I can just be a tourist, enjoying the scenery. It’ll be fun.” He laughed and you couldn’t help but laugh, too.
“Yeah,” you agreed. “It’ll be fun. Plus, I don’t think I’ll be able to survive six months without you.”
Nate’s smile dipped into something sadder, but just for a moment before he covered it up with another smile, not that it reached his eyes. “Yeah, me too. You’re my peace, (Y/N). I don’t know how I’ll survive without you.”
You pressed a kiss to his jaw. “We’ll be okay. And I’ll come back everything will go back to normal, I promise.”
He shook his head. “No, not normal. Starting now, you’re going to actually put yourself first and stuff, no more giving up opportunities and being quiet because of me, okay? You have to promise me that.”
You stayed quiet for a while before you nodded against his chest. “Okay.”

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
~I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers but the Sleeping At Last Cover~
Author's Note: I know 1000% that Nate would NEVER say these things btw. Such a work of fiction so don't mind the cringe silliness Summary: Nate's wedding day Warnings: teeth aching fluff Word Count: 1,885 Nathan Mackinnon x fm!reader
Tumblr media
He ran his hand along the sleeves of the dark blue suit, smoothing the edges in the process. The suit covering his body was a color he was familiar with. Many of his game day suits were similar in style and color. But this one was special as it was specifically tailored for him on his wedding day.
His fiance loved the color blue on him, says the color brings out the blue in his eyes and his hair was brighter with it.
He was waiting outside the cabin with his groomsman standing beside him as they were waiting for the first look. “I never thought I’d see the day,” Sid teased as he smacked his hand against Nate’s shoulder. He rolled his eyes dramatically as he straightened his jacket.
“Shut up,” he mumbled as he saw Y/N’s maid of honor, Ella, turn the corner of the cabin. It was snowy and in the middle of Decemember. Usually it would be freezing but something about the energy of the day warmed his body in the cold temperatures.
“Are you ready?” she asked, “I’m gonna need you to be ready because she’s-” Ella trailed off as her mouth dropped open. She ushered Nate towards her excitedly. Nate smiled as his heart began pounding hard against his chest. The groomsman started following behind him.
Ella placed Nate on the cobblestone path, forcing him to turn around to face his groomsman. “She’ll tell you to turn around,” Ella offered as she started walking towards the other end of the path where Y/N was waiting behind a corner of the large cabin.
Nate took a deep breath as he met the eyes of each of his groomsmen. His eyes landed on Cale who’s cheeks and ears were bright red, obviously freezing but didn’t say anything. Mikko stood beside Cale with a wide smile. Gabe stood beside Mikko with teary eyes. Gabe would deny it but he was tearing up to see one of his best friends finally marry the love of his life.
Sidney stood at the end, his best man, not fighting tears as he could Y/N walking towards Nate. All of the boys could now, except Nate. All the boys smiled widely and started laughing nervously as they could see her walking down the path.
Nate’s eyes lit up at the sound of heels and her soft giggles were getting closer to him. He took a sharp breath as he blinked away the tears filling his eyes. Nate’s eyes look towards Sid to see him wiping a tear from his eye. He pointed towards him and chuckled as he licked his lips nervously.
“Hey,” she mumbled behind him, he tilted his head back waiting for her to grant him permission to look at her.
“Hi,” he let out as his voice cracked. She glanced towards the photographer before she delicately tapped her hand against his back.
He took a deep breath before he spun around and instantly his lips quivered. He’s only cried tears of joy once in his life before. His eyes scanned her frame, taking in the gorgeous white dress, the beautiful touches of her makeup, and the way her hair looked perfect against her skin. She was stunning. He smiled as he took a step towards her engulfing her in a hug.
“If I’m crying now, what will I do later?” He whispered against her ear before he pulled away. His eyes scanned her features and saw the tears brimming her eyes. “Oh Baby, no tears,” he mumbled as he reached his thumb beneath her eye to catch the tear leaving her eye.
“That’s no fair, you’re crying,” she whispered, erupting laughter surrounding them. She tilted her head back and began blinking rapidly.
“There’s a lot more effort into your look than mine,” he said while laughing. She rolled her eyes playfully as she leaned towards him and delicately kissed his lips.
“Sid’s crying,” she whispered as she pulled away.
“He’s been crying all morning,” he let out teasingly.
“Have not!” he shouted while laughing.
~~~
Nate stood at the end of the aisle. It was inside the cabin, all of their friends and family surrounded them. It was loud as he was cracking jokes with his groomsmen to calm his nerves. “Does she know what you did for your vows?” Sid asked and Nate shook his head while laughing. “Oh she’s going to kill you,” Sid offered.
“I asked if I could be funny and she said yes. That’s on her-” he was cut off as an instrumental romance song started to play. The entire room instantly quieted down as they turned their backs to see Y/N. Nate bit his bottom as he took a sharp breath. The doors opened and the bridesmaids started walking down the aisle.
One by one each smiled widely as they walked. After Ella reached the front of the altar, Y/N and her father started walking down the aisle together. Nate started breathing heavier as he felt his heart pound against his chest. Not once did he look away, his eyes were strictly on Y/N and no one else.
She stopped right before the small steps towards the altar and gave her father a brief hug, he kissed the side of her head as he walked towards his seat beside her mother. Nate reached his hand towards her and she gladly took it as she climbed the two steps to stand at the aisle with him.
“Beautiful,” he whispered as he looked deeply into her eyes. She took a shaky breath as she ran her thumb across the top of his hands.
The ceremony started beautifully. Y/N’s brother was the one officiating the wedding as neither of them were super religious. It was not a serious ceremony with her brother cracking jokes that Y/N and Nate approved beforehand.
“I’ve known Y/N her whole life,” the entire room erupted in laughter, “I've known Nate for seven years. And during those seven years, I’ve never seen my sister happier. I’ve never seen my sister so loved. So I’m so glad that I get to be the one to marry these two today. I personally don’t have much else to say, so I’ll let the blubber boy here start with his vows,” her brother said as he wiped a tear that fell on his cheek. Nate chuckled as he rolled his eyes.
“Uh, I was writing my vows with music playing in the background,” he started as he wiped a tear from his cheek, “I was really getting into the groove of it, I had paragraphs upon paragraphs of vows. So here’s what I originally had written,” he cleared his throat as he met Y/N’s gaze. She stared towards him suspiciously.
“When I wake up, I know I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you. When I go out I know I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you,” he pauses for a moment as a couple people in the crowd start snickering and Y/N rolls her eyes playfully. “This next bit isn’t important,” he muttered as he ran his finger across his nose, avoiding her gaze, “But I would walk five hundred miles and I would walk five hundred more just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.”
He paused again and the entire room erupted into laughter. Y/N laughed hysterically as he looked towards her with so much admiration.
“I realized after I read it outloud the first time that I actually wrote down the lyrics to the song by The Proclaimers. You know that Scottish rock band?” he met her gaze and she was still laughing. “Which in hindset, the song reminded me of us. We’re not a very serious couple. We’re always cracking jokes and acting more like best friends than people that are in a romantic relationship. But like the song there’s this funny and joke-like exterior but the love that I have for you is deeper and means so much more to me than you realize.” he paused as he met her eyes, no longer needing the paper in his hands.
“The crazy part is that I would genuinely walk over a thousand miles if it meant you needed me. I’m not a romantic guy, I think all that stuff is bullshit but there’s not one thing that I wouldn’t do if it meant that you were happy. Even if it meant shaving a beard mid playoffs because it itched your face. I’m so in love with you, Y/N,”
She tilted her head to the side as she smiled.
“I’ve never made him shave his beard during playoffs,” she stared as she widened her eyes, the crowd laughed again, “Nate, I don’t know how I’m going to top The Proclaimers but I’m going to try,” she let out as she met his gaze.
“I lived in Denver for my entire life. Many of you who have lived in Denver know how big the Avs are. My father was ecstatic when Nathan Mackinnon was coming to Colorado. He renewed his season tickets because Nathan Mackinnon was going to save the Avs. If you guys thought he was excited that he was coming to Colorado, you should have seen him when I told him my boyfriend was Nathan Mackinnon.”
The room erupted into laughter again, Nate shook his head with a wide smile on his lips, “I hold my dad’s opinion of the people I fall in love with very high. If my father didn’t like the guy there was no way I was going to marry him. When Nate walked into my childhood house my dad basically gave Nate his blessing right there. My family loved Nate, for more reasons than because of his career. They loved him because Nate loved me. Nate loved me like I have never been loved before,” she said as she felt her eyes tear up.
“I have spent seven years of my life being in love with you. I want to spend a thousand more loving you and cracking jokes with you. Talking about stupid songs with you, I want to dress up in your dumb couple costumes. I want to spend every damn second I can showing how much I love you Nathan,” she let out as a tear fell onto her cheek.
Her brother cleared his throat as he tilted his head back, “That was beautiful,” he said as he chuckled, “You guys are disgusting but that was adorable and stupid,” he ranted. Y/N and Nate chuckled again. They shortly exchanged rings, sliding them onto each other’s fingers while laughing. “I think this is the part where you kiss?” he said, widening his hands to his side. Nate looked towards her brother, raising his eyebrows, “I pronounce you husband and wife,” he said, smiling widely as he stepped to the side to allow for the perfect moment without him interrupting.
Nate smiled widely before he delicately placed his hands onto her waist as he leaned towards her. Kissing her urgently, the entire room erupted in loud cheers. He pulled away briefly, keeping his lips close to hers, “I love you,” he mumbled.
“Y/N, look at how much fun they’re having.” Nathan said as you put another pillow behind his back.
“Nate I thought I told you to stop checking up on your friends.” You told your boyfriend, sitting down on the couch next to him and pulling the blanket over his muscular legs.
“It’s not my fault, they’re sending me videos.” Nathan whined, scrolling through his direct messages.
You sighed, taking Nathan’s phone out of his hands and placing it in a locked drawer. In addition to coming to terms with his team’s loss in Game 7, Nate was also dealing with an injured shoulder which prevented him from going on vacation with the rest of his teammates. All of this cumulated in a very needy boyfriend who didn’t want you to leave his side. You had been an A+ caretaker, making sure Nathan made all his appointments on time, cooking his favourite foods, helping him shower and brush his teeth.
“This sucks.” Nate said slumping into the sofa.
“Nate, it’s only for-”
“It’s not just that I’m injured.” Nate cut you off, taking a deep breath.
“It’s the idea that f I wasn’t hurt, we’d probably be having sex right now. No games, no practices, no press. Just hours of slow fucking where I take my time to explore you inside and out.” Visions of Nate drawing your orgasm after orgasm from your body danced in your head.
“Aw, is someone a little sexually frustrated?” You asked, squeezing his muscular thigh.
“Y/N, stop it.” Nate brushed your hand off his thigh, his full lips were pulled into a pouty frown. Yup he was definitely sexually frustrated
You smirked, usually, it was Nate who took initiative in the bedroom. Sure he listened to you and your feedback but from a practical perspective, it only made sense. He was much larger than you and traditional in the sense that he liked to do all of the work.
With his injury taking away so much of your boyfriend’s mobility, you were wondering if you’d ever get another shot at seeing Nate so vulnerable.
“You know Nate, you might be injured but I’m not.” Nate raised an eyebrow, not sure what you were implying. “I can still pleasure us.”
“How would you feel about that Nate?” You asked him moving closer to him on the couch. You held your weight in your hands as you lifted your head to kiss him, conveying your sense of urgency. You gently sat down on his lap, careful not the aggravate his shoulder. You could feel how hard he was against you.
“Oh Nate, no wonder you’re so grumpy. If I had known I would’ve offered you a handjob in the shower earlier.“ You could feel Nate smile against your mouth, it made you feel good to make him smile again.
You started slowly moving your hips, rocking yourself to create friction on yours and Nate’s most sensitive areas. Nate used his good arm to pull you closer to him as you increase your speed. You were sure Nate could feel your heat despite all the layers of fabric that separated you. Nate, came first, breathless and flushed. You were close but still needed a bit longer, you moved yourself to sit fully on his firm thigh so you weren’t bouncing on his spent and oversensitive cock. You chased your orgasm, swivelling your hips while Nate’s hand was on the curve of your waist. You chanted his name as waves of pleasure radiated from your core. When you were done, you felt like your body was made of jelly, you slump forward to press your forehead against his. You lost yourself in Nate’s blue eyes and you kissed him, slower and deeper than before.
“Y/N, you’re going to need to help me get a new pair of boxers.”
