Tales of Arise
Worst Tales game I've played? Almost certainly. Definitely doesn't hold a candle to Vesperia.
The characters weren't very interesting, and the focus on forgiveness got played up to such a ludicrous level that the whole plot felt ridiculous. Conversations were endlessly repetitive, and absolutely nothing good happened once it got to that one terrible scene with Law, Rinwell, and Almeidrea.
The combat didn't evolve past the halfway point, and the whole thing just started feeling like an endless chore. The worst was on Lenegis, where it was just one tedious cutscene after another, with absolutely no action and the smallest of plot developments.
I have to believe that the critics did not finish the game because the high scores are inexplicable otherwise.

Character Biography: Primula Rosso
Tumblr media
The following information has been pulled from the Tales Channel official site's page on Tales of Fandom Vol. 1. Typed below is a transcript of its English translated entry on Primula.
Story synopsis
"Craymel Detective: The Keele Zeibel Affair" In this Tales of Eternia spin-off, Keele is arrested on suspicion of leaking Mintche University's exam questions. Primula, who leads the school's detective club and has unilaterally drafted her classmate Keele as a member, opens an investigation to clear his name. But having already earned a reputation as a bumbling investigator, Primula has a tough road ahead.
Primula Rosso
A deeply inquisitive scholar, Primula majors in Aurora Artes at Mintche University. She's love detective novels since she was a child, and has established an unofficial detective club at the university, with herself as its self-declared president.
The following information has been pulled from the official Bandai Namco site page on Tales of Fandom Vol. 1. The site is in Japanese.
A character introduced in Fandom. She's a girl brimming with curiosity who is currently studying at Mintche University. She works as a "detective" in the school (in actuality, she's a handyman). She gets wrapped up in an incident with Keele in the Faceventure story...
Tumblr media
Name: Primula Rosso (プリムラ・ロッソ) CV: Miki Nagasawa Character designer: Daigo Okumura Gender: Female Height: 159cm Weight: 45kg Hometown: Inferia City Occupation: Scholar at Mintche University Social standing: Commoner. Her family runs a business in the capital and they're fairly well off. Family: Father, mother and four younger brothers. She's the eldest daughter. Personality:
For the most part she's well intended
She's cheerful and doesn't have a bad side
She's brimming with curiosity
She's prone to simplistic thinking
She's quite the dreamer
She has (surprisingly) good grades. She excels at courses requiring memorization skills
She's decently athletic
She loves to cook, to the point that she makes her own lunches every morning before school She excels at eggbear dishes and has the skills to make just about anything. She doesn't have any disliked food
Hobby: Reading mystery novels Future dream: Operate a detective agency (in collaboration with Keele) Current goal: Promote the detective club to the university officials Treasured things: A book she bought with her childhood savings called "Introduction to Becoming a Great Detective". She's read it to the point she can recite it from heart Other things: After an incident revolving leaked examination questions, she became good friends with Lunaria Barnes of the newspaper club. They went out to a cafe they had heard about and enjoy their student life together to the fullest. Lunaria is from Chambard, and her future dream is to become a newspaper reporter and make the Barnes family the richest in all of Inferia.
Primula's character design
Tumblr media
Okumura-san's comment:
During early conceptions, I had considered removing Primula's "detective antenna" (the cowlicks) but I ended up leaving them for the sake of their capabilities in expressing emotion. They can form into heart shapes and stars, and if she's feeling so strongly, she can even form them to replicate Keele's face. Quite fanciful, isn't she. *There's not scene in the game where this happens.

"A slightly long interview"
Miki Nagasawa
Tumblr media
[PROFILE]
Agency: Atomic Monkey Birthday: July 11th Notable works: Maya Ibuki (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Maki Izumi (Kidou Senkan Nadesico), etc.
Interviewer: Namco's Tanaka-san
Tumblr media
The interview took place in the studio where "Craymel Detective: The Keele Zeibel Incident," which is the story Primula appears in, was recorded.
Tanaka-san, who is a publicity clerk, awaited recordings to be finished in order to request an interview with actress Miki Nagasawa. You can probably feel how nervous Tanaka-san was when talking in front of a lady as beautiful as her...
Interview, start!
Tanaka: Nagasawa-san, were you n-nervous at your first time voicing for the Tales series? (*person who is nervous himself) Nagasawa: Let me think. It's a well-known series, so the pressure was definitely on... Tanaka: Is that to say you knew about the series prior? Nagasawa: Yes, I hadn't actually played the games myself, but I'd seen it in commercials and popularity rankings. I'd heard of it plenty. Tanaka: Thank you. (*a bit relieved) Nagasawa: I was really happy when I heard I got the job, given it's such a great series. I wouldn't say I was stressed, but having a role that was alongside the most famous character Keele-kun was a bit nerve wracking. Tanaka: Keele is quite popular, isn't he! Hahaha! (*proud laughter) Nagasawa: Yes! Primula is the character that Keele-kun lovers can project onto the most. I did my best to portray Primula's emotions and how she loves the things she loves even if it isn't reciprocated. Tanaka: I see! The development staff actually chose to create Primula because they believed fans would feel closer to Keele by controlling a character who interacts with Keele closely rather than controlling Keele himself. That said, what is it about Primula that you want the players to pay close attention to? Nagasawa: Let's see, I would say the fact that Primula has a robust imagination... (laughs) There's this one scene that's really funny... So enjoy it! (laughs) It's the part where me and Hoshi-kun (Keele's actor) talk over each other! Tanaka: Oh man, overhearing the recording to that was an absolute blast! I laughed so hard. (*during recording, Tanaka-san burst out laughing to the point the other staff glared daggers into him to stop) Nagasawa: Hahaha, thank you. (laughs) There's also a scene where Primula lies when going around investigating all the rooms trying to find hints, and I tried to make that bit more lively too. (laughs) That was a lot of fun. Tanaka: You sure had a lot of fun voicing her, huh? That's great! (laughs) Could you give a message to the fans who are all eagerly awaiting the release of the game? Nagasawa: Of course. I'm very proud to have been casted for such a wonderful game. I did my best to voice Primula, to be worthy of the love all of the fans who love the Tales series and Keele-kun have. I hope you can all play the game and feel your love for Keele-kun reflected properly in it. Primula doesn't profess her love or anything, but I did my best in voicing her more romantic dialogue, so I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on my efforts in that regard. Tanaka: Hearing how passionately you voiced her for the sake of all the fans and Primula herself has me emotional! (*teary eyed) I could really feel that passion as I listened to your recording. Everyone, you better pay good attention to her work! (*doing his job as a PR clerk) To close things, could you talk a bit about your future work plans? Nagasawa: It's a while from now, but in March of 2002, I'll be producing my own public appearance. Tanaka: That's incredible! Nagasawa: This is actually my second time... (laughs) Tanaka: Ahahaha... (sweat) Have you decided on a location? Nagasawa: Yes! On March 22nd to the 24th of 2002, I'll be on stage at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, so please come watch me! Tanaka: I'll be there for sure! Nagasawa: Be my guest. (laughs) Tanaka: Thank you so much for today! I'll definitely see your performance! Nagasawa: Thank you as well.
Comment from Tanaka:
During the recording, I kept thinking to myself how incredible Nagasawa-san was. When I interviewed her, it felt so obvious to me how much she understood both her character as well as the series as a whole. And she had so much fun with it to boot! I'm so moved! I witnessed most of the recording, and all of the other voice actors involved in this game seem to really hold a lot of love for the Tales series and had such a blast recording for it. This game will be such a joy to all the fans, so please try it for yourself. Phew! Talking to pretty people sure is nerve-wracking!

2022 in Gaming
The Last of Us: Part I - Naughty Dog / Sony Horizon: Forbidden West - Guerilla Games / Sony Elden Ring - FromSoftware / Bandai Namco Ent. Dying Light 2: Stay Human - Techland The Quarry - Supermassive Games / 2K As Dusk Falls - Interior Night / Xbox Game Studios Stray - BlueTwelve Studio / Annapurna Games God of War: Ragnarok - Santa Monica Studio / Sony Crisis Core: Reunion - Square Enix A Plague Tale: Requiem - Asobo Studio / Focus Ent.
When I think of the games that have come and gone this year (and still need to come, in some cases), few words come to mind, words that also describe their worlds and those who live within them.
Protective. Purposeful. Persistent.
Humans that love, gods that hate. Animals, children, soldiers, survivors. Fathers, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters. Knights and beasts, queens and robots. Stories of us and of them, bringing us together in an uncertain world, journeying through bitterness, through betrayal, through dark and light, to us. To us.
It's always interesting, seeing how each year's games tend to reflect the world we live in ourselves; 2020 brought to us The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII Remake, among others. Stories of revenge and redemption, tearing each other apart while we were apart from each other in a ruthless and unknown pandemic. The following year, some of the games brought to us were Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil: Village, and It Takes Two; these gave us stories of teamwork, compassion, and care, whether you were saving your own daughter or journeying through the mental illness-ridden brains of your mentors, those games brought us back together and helped teach us a few things about ourselves.
This year was almost like a fire that 2021 had sparked to life. We were ready to get back to grand adventures and epic fights across all mediums, big or small, and we embraced the lovely little indie games along the way. And while the path ahead surely is uncertain and frightening, at least we have some pretty good storytellers to comfort us when we need it the most.
To everyone who worked to bring us these stories this year, and every year, whether an assistant, director, actor, writer, tester, programmer, animator, or anywhere in between, thank you.

Hey. There was a new Raincode interview written a few days ago and in that interview, Halara’s gender was brought up. I made a post about that question on my blog and I am curious your thoughts about it. I also linked the interview in my post.
(This is the post in question, for anyone interested. Which I think you probably should be, but... )
My thoughts are mostly that Kodaka's quote/response feels frustratingly uninformative and devoid of any value, but also sadly unsurprising. I know it's just a machine translation, so maybe this isn't capturing the exact nuance of the statement... but the sentence "I didn't specifically intend a social message" is just exactly the kind of vague, wishy-washy, "I really don't want to be in trouble with or offend anyone on any side of any possible argument" language that I've LONG gotten used to in promotional interviews about movies, TV, books, games, etc. Because god forbid you possibly appear to be either for or against anything that might be considered controversial in any possible market! Having STANCES on THINGS could damage your profit margin with some potential demographic.
I suppose this could be all there is to it. Maybe Kodaka legitimately means what he says here and put no greater thought into Halara's lack of gender identity. But I also think it'd be weird if the implications of leaving their gender unknown didn't at least occur to him at some point, particularly as there's been a growing awareness of so-called "X-gender" people in Japan over the last year and a half.
But ultimately, "Master Detective Archives: Rain Code" is Japanese media, and that leaves this kind of question-dodging not only expected, but arguably maybe even necessary. Take a look at the recent of the recent controversy over The Witch From Mercury, the Gundham anime that is over-the-top mega-gay. Bandai Namco still felt the need to declare that the relationship between Suletta and Miorine is "open to interpretation" despite the fact that the two get FUCKED MARRIED.
In fact, this Kotaku article does a good job digging into not only that anime's particular can of worms, but also how queer-friendly media in Japan continues to be suppressed and censored from the dominant conservatives behind the media companies and government even while those works enjoy massive popularity with younger consumers. Get a load of what they say about Yuri! on Ice:
Look no further than the fate of 2016’s smash hit Yuri! On Ice, which tells the tale of a struggling figure skater, Yuri Katsuki, who is coached back to success by the charismatic and undeniably handsome Victor Nikiforov. Similar to The Witch From Mercury, the pair’s relationship is explicitly laid out in the story, and the characters also exchange rings. It was, and still is, celebrated as a landmark anime for LGBTQ+ representation. It received acclaim in Japan, winning Animation of the Year at the Tokyo Anime Awards as well as a number of fan-voted awards. It has consistently been named as one of the top anime of the 2010s by IGN, Anime News Network, and here at Kotaku. In what seemed like an obvious move to capitalize on the success of the show, a feature-length Yuri! On Ice movie was greenlit almost immediately. But six years later, a statement from Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka said that despite the show being a hit, the company didn’t make a lot of money off of Yuri! On Ice, and as such, the movie likely won’t happen. Back when Blu-ray sales mattered to the anime industry, Yuri! On Ice torched the competition, selling nearly double the amount of discs of its nearest competitor, the juggernaut franchise Love Live. The runaway success of Yuri! On Ice led to MAPPA’s heightened profile in the industry, which helped it secure the rights to produce Attack on Titan’s never-ending final season, the massively popular Jujutsu Kaisen, and the second season of Makoto Yukimura’s viking masterpiece, Vinland Saga. For MAPPA to claim that the Yuri! On Ice movie isn’t financially viable is disingenuous and contradicts standard industry metrics for success. MAPPA could release the Yuri! On Ice movie tomorrow, and it would be a guaranteed hit. Which begs the question, what is the hold up? It's a reminder that speaking out against the anime production committees that dole out the work to animation studios is a dangerous game. In most of her press for Yuri! On Ice, creator and director Sayo Yamamoto played nice, answering softball questions that never directly addressed the very obvious love playing out on screen between Yuki and Victor. But, in the Yuri! On Ice fanbook “Go Yuri Go!” from 2017, Yamamoto claimed that the series had been censored outside of her control, and she had to fight to keep a kiss between Yuri and Victor in the final cut of the show. Since then, Yamamoto has not gotten any other projects. To have arguably the biggest hit of 2016, receive critical acclaim from your own industry, and then not be given any work? It doesn’t add up. MAPPA has tied Yamamoto to the Yuri! On Ice movie project and essentially strung her out for six years now, leaving her in a kind of professional purgatory. In an industry where the slightest scandal can lead to blacklisting, the idea that Yamamoto is being punished for wanting to go all-in on a queer narrative is not far-fetched.
So. Yeah. This is all a very long way of me saying "I don't know whether what Kodaka said here really tells us much about his intentions/thoughts, nor do I expect we'll ever hear much more on the topic." A lot of Japanese creators have gone the way of just letting the work speak for itself and vaguely denying anything else in public, because it's just safer that way... even if it leaves the rest of us clueless as to where the legit allies are.
Either way, Halara is a pretty awesome representation regardless. I'll just take that as a positive sign.

Hottest Tales Villains Results
The results are in! After 129 people took the Hot or Not? survey, we've got some fascinating data to go through. But first, our two overall winners!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaius, the winner of Most Concentrated Sexiness (i.e., most votes when asked to write-in the single sexiest character)
And Duke, the winner of Broadest Appeal to Sexiness (i.e., most votes deeming him "hot".)
Out of 94 write ins, 13 people (14%) put Gaius' name forward as the single sexiest Tales antagonist. And of 129 responses on the survey, 116 (90.6%) said Duke was hot.
Now, there is a lot more data to go through, so buckle in!
First, for some clarity. I'm going to be using "villain" and "antagonist" pretty interchangeably throughout this because I don't want to keep repeating the word 'antagonist,' which is very long and not very sexy itself. But rest assured that I do know the difference, and I don't actually think Gaius is a villain.
Similarly, I know that for many people, the terms "hot" and "sexy" and "attractive" have distinct meanings, but for the sake of not overusing the same word a thousand times, I'm going to be using both. Now, on to the data!
Sexiest Tales Villains
Here is the ranking of all the Tales villains that are Certified Fresh, meaning they were rated as Hot by at least 80% of respondents.
Duke (90.6%)
Dhaos (90.6%)*
Legretta (90.6%)*
Yuan (89.7%)
Zaveid (87.2%)
Gaius (85.6%)
Nebilim (85.2%)
Richard (85%)
Richter (84.8%)
Asch (81.7%)
Ilene (81.5%)
Schwartz (81.3%)
Schwann (80.8%)
(*Dhaos and Legretta did not tie for first place with Duke above because they each received only 115 total votes, meaning more people said 'meh' and skipped them)
Write-in Results
The lat question on the survey asked respondents to write the name of who they thought was the single sexiest character. This is the category Gaius won with 13 votes. Here are the other characters who received more than 1 votes:
Tumblr media
Dhaos came in second with 7 votes, with Duke trailing right behind with 6. Richard, Richter, Schwann, and Shigure all receive 5 votes each. Kratos got 4. Artorius, Chronos, Vholran, and Yuan got 3 each. Nebilim and Teresa each got 2.
Two of my favourite responses:
Myself. Damn right, we support positivity and self love on this blog.
Bandai Namco Tales Studios themselves. Yeah, I also feel like sometimes, the greatest antagonist in these games is the studio themselves. But still, they do make these games for us, and that's very sexy of them.
Sexiest Villain Per Game
We've got the overall sexiest, now who is the finest villain you can look forward to fighting in each game?
Tales of Phantasia: Dhaos (90.6%)
Tales of Destiny: Ilene Rembrandt (81.5%)
Tales of Eternia: Shizel (51.2%)
Tales of Destiny 2: Fortuna (52.1%)
Tales of Symphonia: Yuan Ka-Fai (89.7%)
Tales of Symphonia DotNW: Richter Abend (84.8%)
Tales of Rebirth: Militsa (56.9%)
Tales of Legendia: Schwartz (81.3%)
Tales of the Abyss: Legretta (90.6%)
Tales of Innocence: Mathias (32.5%)
Tales of Vesperia: Duke Pantarei (90.6%)
Tales of Hearts: Incarose (70.8%)
Tales of Graces: Richard (85%)
Tales of Xillia: Gaius (85.6%)
Tales of Xillia 2: Victor (77%)
Tales of Zestiria: Maltran (79.8)
Tales of Berseria: Zaveid (87.2)
Tales of Arise: Vholran Igniseri (57.6%)
Interestingly, in around half of these cases, the hottest villain is also the final boss. That's a good way to do it, I think; gives you something to look forward to all the way to the end!
Least Sexy Villains
We looked at the winners, but now... who are the least sexy? The most unfuckable? Luckily, we have a single winner! The only man who received zero votes:
Tumblr media
Bartlow, a minor antagonist from Tales of Zestiria. Gotta be honest with you, I've played Zesty but I do not remember who this man is at all. Maybe if he was hotter, he'd have made an impression on me.
The runners-up.... There's Someone Out There For Everyone
The characters who received only 1 or 2 votes. Someone out there thinks they're hot! But not very many.
Ragou (Vesperia) (0.8%)
Shane Rembrandt (Destiny) (0.9%)
Solon (Legendia) (0.9%)
Vharley (Symphonia) (1.6%)
Let's have a round of applause for the villains who did evil things but weren't even sexy about it.
Most Divisive
Are these characters hot? Are they not? They are, apparently, an acquired taste. These are the characters who scored between 48% and 52% hot. Fandom is split in half on whether they're hot or not.
Barbatos Goetia (50.8%)
Arnold Alcott (50.9%)
Shizel (51.2%)
Alexei Dinoia (51.6%)
Artroius (48.3%
Lunarre (51.7%)
Sexiest Monster
What makes some monsters hotter than others? I'm not sure, but I'm fascinated at the results! Would love to hear commentary from those who voted Hot on the monsters.
Tumblr media
Ishrantu, from Tales of Phantasia, was voted the sexiest monster with 26.1% hot votes.
In second place were the Helganquil from Tales of Arise, with 19.7% hot rating.
Tumblr media
However, they are arguably still humanoid and not really monsters, so let's also give a shout out to the tied 3rd place winners, with 18.3% each:
Yuris, from Tales of Rebirth
Tumblr media
And the Great Astral Spirit from Tales of Arise!
Tumblr media
Most 'Meh'
Each question on the poll was optional, so respondents could skip rating characters they just had no feelings about either way.
So which antagonist did people most often shrug about?
Tumblr media
Batista Diego, from Tales of Destiny, who received only 106 votes. Is he hot? Is he not? To be frank, we just don't care. (But for the record, of those 106 votes, 20.8% voted hot)
Most Invested
Three characters tied for most total votes. These are the men who the most people had an opinion about, with 128 each:
Duke Pantarei (90.6% hot)
Kratos Aurion (78.1% hot)
Mithos Yggdrasill (57% hot)
And a special shout-out to the character who got 127 votes in total, but only 3 of them (2.4%) were hot: Lydon Bernhardt. Not only is he unpopular, people are very definitive about how unattractive he is.
Demographics
Finally, let's take a look at who out voters were! First, which Tales games have we all played? (Or are otherwise familiar with the characters, such as watching a walkthrough on Youtube).
Tumblr media
The results are probably not that surprising. Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia are the most commonly played, which is common knowledge for most of us.
The relatively low score for Arise is a it interesting. Considering it sold so well and smashed so many records, only 62% of people voting have played it. Is it because it's a newer game, so its fandom largely grew on Twitter? Are most of the people who played it less casual Tales fans - i.e., they liked Arise but aren't in the Tales fandom as a whole so aren't taking polls dedicated to the whole series? Curious!
Duke, the highest rated 'hot' character, is from one of the three most popular games. Interestingly, the character voted in as sexiest, which indicates a more personal dedication than what may have been a passing "yeah, sure, he can definitely get it" from just seeing Duke's picture, is from a game only 75% of the voters are familiar with. 13.5% of people who have played Xillia think Gaius is the sexiest antagonist in Tales as a whole.
Dhaos' popularity is also inspiring! Only 50% of people have played Phantasia, but 90.6% said, "I may not know who this man is, but I do know he's hot as hell."
How about gendered attraction demographics? This question asked which genders voters find hot.
Tumblr media
As you can see, more voters find men hot than any other gender, but the difference between attraction to men vs women is not so big that I think it makes a huge impact on the votes. A woman (Legretta) made it into the top three, after all, and tied for highest percentage of hot votes.
Conclusion
And that's a wrap for the data! If you'd like to go through and make your own analyses, here is the data. I don't know if there's a way to link you to the Google Forms results with the helpful pie charts (if anyone knows how to do that, let me know) but here are the spreadsheets.
First, the spreadsheet I put together to compare the stats, listing every character, how many hot votes they got, what percentage that is, and what the total number of votes is. They're colour-coded by game (+the major antagonist section at the beginning). View it here.
Second, the raw data Google Forms, compiling every respondent's answers. Check it out here!
I open the floor now to more commentary. What was your rational for your choices? Any responses surprise you? Interesting correlations you notice?
Overall, thanks for participating in this survey!

Tales of Symphonia finally got the rereleased on modern platforms. So naturally I had to do some art for it. This piece and the chibi were part of the @tosrcountdown event on Always happy to give one of my favourite games of all time some love. Please Enjoy!

Annon-Guy: Hi Darunia.
How's it going?
What did you think of my game idea for DotNW?
Do you ever get scared of getting Heart Disease (the clogged artery kind)?
1, It's going pretty well. I'm still catching up on things.
2.
And if you're talking about these posts, I think it's really nifty! I do think it would be an overwhelming amount of content to get through with all the extra side content. But I appreciate how much you want to see all your faves together.
3. I generally try not to worry myself with stuff I can't control because being afraid doesn't help anything. That doesn't mean I'm not afraid. But it means that I try to act on useful concerns and ignore anxious fear.
Think of it this way: If there's something you can do, right now, to fix/help your odds at preventing heart disease, take those steps right now. Plan a healthier diet, exercise, take care of your health, visit your doctor regularly. If you're already doing the best you can and there's nothing you can change, then it doesn't help anything at all to worry about it. I know it's easier said then done. I worry about a lot of things that I can't help. You can't just decide not to have anxiety about something. But if your worrying only stresses you out because there's nothing you can do about it, it's not healthy to dwell about it. Focus on distracting yourself because worrying about something you cannot prevent or improve your odds against just makes you suffer unnecessarily. Obviously it's not an irrational thing to be afraid of. But it's pointless to let fear paralyze you into not living your life. You just have to do your best and enjoy the time you have on this earth and make the healthiest choices you're able to make. It IS scary to think about. So I don't. I do my very best to not think of it. Instead I focus on things I can change and things that bring me joy. Cooking my own meals helps me make healthier decisions and brings me joy. So I try to cook my own foods. Playing video games and hanging out with friends helps keep my mind in a good place with less anxiety.
I find that it's harder to stop irrational anxiety when I'm overly tired. If I stay up too late, my brain spirals into anxiety when I try to go to sleep. So I try to go to bed before I get too tired.
When all else fails, I do my best to find things that make me laugh. I can't be upset if I'm laughing. Sometimes it's enough to just hear a human voice so that I don't feel alone with my thoughts.
Fear exists for a reason. It keeps us alive. But there are only 2 ways to deal with it. Either you address it, confront it, let it motivate you to change things for the better, or you ignore it because it isn't helping you.
So that's what I try to do. Hopefully that was helpful?
