Spiritbox: the post-metalcore trio set to own 2021
Genre-fluid Canadians Spiritbox are channelling all sorts of horror into their ever-evolving sound
Tumblr media
Whether they’re immersed in true crime podcasts or creating horror in their music videos, genre-splicing Canadians Spiritbox – named, quite literally, after a device that supposedly helps you contact ghosts – immerse themselves in all things unusual. “It’s weird but I’ve always been interested in dark stuff,” says vocalist Courtney LaPlante. “I think it’s an anxiety thing; it’s a way for me to explore things that make me anxious, but in a ‘safe’ way.”
Following their 2017 self-titled debut that established a love for progressive metal, their more recent singles Blessed Be, Rule Of Nines and Holy Roller eagerly indulge other stylisations, borrowing a few metalcore-styled riffs and dropping in nuggets of industrial sounds. Courtney takes a page from her inspirations Deftones and Tesseract, stressing that Spiritbox won’t be limited in their creative endeavours by the pressure to be conventionally heavy.
“What those bands both have in common is fluidity,” she explains. “They can pretty much do whatever they want throughout the song; it can become heavy, they can do screaming vocals, but then also the song can take a turn and be very beautiful, uplifting and melodic. There’s never a sense from their fans of, ‘Oh, you guys sold out, you have singing!’ or like, ‘Oh, this is too heavy.’ Those are the bands that are my biggest inspiration as far as not having boundaries of how they sound.”
Spiritbox’s journey is something the singer describes as a “very unique band experience, unlike the traditional way.” Founded by her and husband Mike Stringer, the band is a labour of love born from the frustrations of Courtney not finding her identity in her previous music. She and Mike played in metalcore crew IWrestledABearOnce, and Courtney has opened up about that time and how the lack of creative input weighed heavily on her.
“It was weird; we were out playing shows [with IWABO], playing these songs nobody on stage wrote,” she explains. “[It was] like, ‘What is this? I don’t want to do this, I don’t connect with this song.’ It just hit us after a couple of years that we wanted to have our own identity and start fresh, make our own music.”
Courtney gushes that her latest venture has garnered a reaction that even she couldn’t anticipate, saying “it’s found an audience and they’re growing with us. The freedom of having a new band is like the freedom of having no baggage and having no preconceived notions of what it should sound like. It’s been very freeing for me.”
Courtney’s career gave her two pivotal entry points into the industry, both at the start and end of the 2010s. Transitioning from the internet’s sparse resources of pirating sites to a world of online, 24-hour accessible streaming or Youtube videos that can teach anyone how to be a sound engineer in 10 minutes has certainly refined her approach to music.
“I’m very happy with how technology has taken us now,” she says. “I literally don’t think our band would exist without the technology and the accessibility of today. We’re almost as DIY as you can get. We do send music out to be mixed and mastered, but we record everything and edit it ourselves. We’re all in our late 20s, early 30s and we’ve all collectively toured a lot. I can’t afford to go on a DIY tour across Canada. Like, if we have one bad tour I’ll just be ruined and our band will have to end. We’re DIY, not by choice, but by necessity.”
You might already be familiar with Spiritbox following the viral success of Holy Roller, smashing rock radio charts, earning more than a million views on YouTube and nabbing more than twice that many streams. Courtney is still unable to wrap her head around it all, especially considering the whole song was written in two hours. “It was just something that was fun for us to play on tour!” she laughs.
Touching back on their love for all things horror, Courtney explained that the Holy Roller music video was actually inspired by Ari Aster’s blockbuster folk horror, Midsommar. “That movie is scary towards the end,” the singer says. “Honestly, one of the most chilling parts about it, to me, is just the main protagonist: how she’s unsure if she’s losing her mind or not, because that’s something that resonates with a lot of people who are battling a mental illness.”
Courtney describes how other real-life situations, like losing a family member, can also be the things that keep you up at night. “That honestly stuck with me a lot in the movie,” she says, “even more so than all the visual horror. We wanted to explore something like that. It’s something that I find even scarier than a ‘scary movie’ because it hits closer to home.”
The next release on the horizon is something for fans to get excited about in 2021. “We’re going to put out a full-length album,” Courtney reveals. “[It means] we don’t have to have every song we create feel like a single; we can experiment more and have more fun exploring different song structures. I just feel like, over the last couple of years, everyone in the band has decided that we also sometimes want to have fun when we’re playing our music!”

Load more appreciation posts coming insyaAllah, let’s start with this one.All 10 of these girls mean so so so much to me, kita start dari kanan naa.
Ayshah – We both went to UiTM sama-sama, both did Diploma in Artistic Writing. Cumanya, lepas diploma, Esah got married to the love of her live, Mr Bean Pie, Jeremy, and now live in California, dengan kedua anak-anak depa yang comel masyaAllah. Esah was there when I was serching for myself, like post SPM baru nak up baru nak dewasa. I’ve made a simple short documentary, for my final year project, showcasing reflection on my short trip to the states, and the video, basically gives the voice of my inner wants, sebab Esah memang relationship goals! MasyaAllah, really, and , I showed it to Adib. It made something to him and yeah. Thank you again for making the time and effort to come all the way to Malaysia from US for my wedding, (and other weddings, and Alhamdulillah, jadik asbab to see you and your kids), you were there when I was at my lowest, and we both cuba be the best and make the best out of our diploma years, and I am blessed to have you there during one of my happiest day masyaAllah. Terima kasih Esahhhh ❤
Diyana – Same like Esah, Diyana and I went to the same uni, same batch, cumanya, kitorang course lain-lain. Tapi sebab kami sepesen, suka buat benda sama-sama, and sama-sama gila, sama-sama susah senang, sama-sama pulon. Terima kasih sudi hadap Ezzah walaupun I am hard at time. Terima kasih sudi dengaq semua ceritera Obi yang Ezzah kisahkan, and I ask Allah to mudahkan your journey to be with your kekasih as well. Ameen. You’re surely one of a kind, and terima kasih instill the feel to travel in me. I remember, we were talking one of the gazebo kat Puncak Perdana tu, and you told me how you really wanna travel, and I took upon that aspiration and go for it. Terima kasih kongsikan dengan Adib a rahsia that I myself dont really know how to put it into words. Terima kasih sudi jadik geng yang tak penah segan nak bergilaan bersama-sama. Know that I really am rooting forward for your future endevours and moga Allah kekalkan indah yang lebih-lebih lagi dalam hidup kita. Ameen. ❤
‘Izzah – Izzah dengan Ezzah. Kita punya nama sama, ejaan ja berbeza. You are like a senpai that I am proud to have. Sama-sama kat Cardiff, and you roll like a pro masyaAllah. I remember the time when we first met, masa tu kat Nottingham Malaysian Games kot, and we clicked right away sebab kita dua sama-sama bising and kuat sembang. Thank you for making my Iceland trip a dream come true, and sudi direkod for my vlog purposes. Masa I first came to KL, nak kerja kat Astro, you welcomed me and bawak pi Ikea. Allah, indah sangat masyaAllah. I remember telling you about Obi, and you’re super excited. Sebab, you were there masa I first saw him. We both were at NMF and you were at the same place as us masa the first glance took place. Makanya, you’re special liddat! I know I can be very clumsy a lot of the time, but you bersabaq and hadapkan sahaja. You always speak the truth and pesan benda yang baik-baik. I ask Allah to hantarkan the best of person for you Zaza, as I know how you are the best person, and you deserve someone that will treat you well as well. (Kalau ada yang berkenan kat Zaza, habaq, can kenalkan. muehehehe). Thank you for being with me during my special day. Thank you banyak bagi tips sebab you just organized your kakak’s wedding. ❤
Maisarah – Mai yang awesome and unique masyaAllah. You knew me when I was really weird, lol, sekarang masih weird, cuma, now more maturely weird. Terima kasih layankan seorang Ezzah Mahmud sejak 2006, walau after PMR, I left SGGS and went to MRSM you make the effort to keep in touch and hang out. MasyaAllah, it means so much to me. You’ve always been a great person and funny and adorable and beyond loving towards me. I remember one time, I overslept and you went to the movies alone. You cool and chill ja with it. Alhamdulillah, Im blessed that we both walaupun tak contact selalu, but we always catch up and follow up and updates. I am super happy to have you during my special day, and tolong siapkan dewan ramai-ramai dengan Esah, Cheng, Fatin, Ninah, Sangmi, Luqman, semua. I ask Allah to grant you best of the best life cause you’re a great person masyaAllah. And thank you for always making me feel great all the time. ❤
Bella – Naaaabbb. Hmm, where to start. When I went to MRSM, I feel like I was outta place. Like, apa aku buat kat sini, bukannya pandai sangatpun, result pun biasa-biasa ja. Like, I feel my artistic side ni makin membuak-buak, and MRSM just made me feel worst about myself. But, life in MRSM was bearable and better with you. You are among the first that sebutkan and inceptioned the fact that, hey, Ezzah, you’re an artist and you should do whatever you want, not so much of what people want you to do. Which then lead me to make my most proud decision of my life, (Now second, sebab, choosing Adib is now most proud decision thus far), to pursue creative endeavours, diploma artistic writing, and I never turned back. Alhamdulillah. And you’re the person that Allah destined to be the one to introduce Adib to me. Malam tu, kat NMF, when I walked to you sebab nak dengaq Bunkface perform (sebab band lain tak kenai sangat, dok duduk tepi ja, and TVS ja lah yang tau pun), and during that blissful and magical/special moment, I saw Adib, just walking pass me, and something weird happened to me, my heart, my brain, my all, and at that split seconds, I was overwhelmed, and more overwhelmed when he proceed to tegur you. Terus, Allahu Akhbar, korang kawan!?!?! and the rest of the story, I’ll detailed it in a different post. As for now, yes, you are super special in these #Forcebond of me and Adib. Thank you. I ask Allah to grant you the blissfulness and amazingness that life can offer. You’re awesome Nab, I am blessed to have you in my life. ❤
Fatin Aqilah – Weyh, dalam dunia ni, aku ber-aku-hang dengan 3-4 orang ja, and hang salah seorang. Hang, Cheng, and Mai adalah antara yang paling lama kenai aku dalam list ni. I was 13, 11 years ago, and you’ve seen me way before, waktu zaman potong rambut boycut, sama-sama geng olahraga, and layankan seorang Ezzah yang pelik dari SGGS, lepas tu sama-sama ke MRSM BP, masih hang tak pernah hilang. MasyaAllah. You’ve seen when at all the phase that I have been to, dari budak-budak, tingkatan 1 sampai la tingkatan 5, when I had my first crush, sampailah my husband now. I remember telling you first about writing the letter to Adib, and asked you to make doa for me. Hang sorang ja yang aku kenai sama-sama tengok Greys Anatomy daripada epi 1 season 1, and you are my person Fatin. You truly are. After all this while, and you still stays, Allahu Akhbar. Aku hargai sangat-sangat. So many great memories that we have had, and kalau aku nak listkan, mau sampai esok, so yeap, I am blessed and proud to have you as my best friend. Terima kasih tau Fatin. ❤
Cheng – Sama macam Fatin, Cheng and I have been friends since we were form 1. Sat next to each other during form 1 and then continue being in the same class till form 3, then I went to MRSM. You were there, in my life, as well, sama macam fatin, going through the my early teen years yang macam-macam kerenah. Sudi teman tengok wayang. Sudi lepak Gurney and be present. Lawak jugak bila dikenangkan. I remember bugging you with homework and all. Allah. Rindu sat. You know me well, you were there during my weirdest years, and you stayed. I am really grateful and blessed to have you. Thank you for taking the time, ambil cuti khamis tu, to make sure my wedding day esoknya tu berjalan dengan lancar. May the Force be with you dear. You’re a special person, and you will always be special to me. Terima kasih sudi be with me through it all. And looking forward to your special day nanti jugak. You’re the most genuinely ayu person I know, and you’re awesome like that. You’re a blessing from Above to me.
Anisah – Anisahhh, my sister from another mother. Anisah, senpaiku, my person, and my go to person for mostly everything. We spend a good 2 years together kat 60 Beauchamp Street kat Cardiff tu. We have no one but ourselves and housemates lain, Syairah, Ninah, Sarah, Pija, Nini. And we keep it akrab, we rely on each other, through susah senang di perantauan. And even after we’re back in Malaysia, you’ve always got my back. No matter what. Ada ja text, video links, and masyaAllah, you’re among the first to know about Adib. Sebab, after I met him that night, I feel like I have to tell you right away. Like, this dude wins me over, like whoaaaaa, kegilaan apakah ini! And then you somehow kenai his cousin and one thing lead to another. I super happy to get you to meet Adib. You’re the first among my friends that jumpak Adib IRL masyaAllah. You were there first hand when I was at my lowest, you keep me grounded and remind me that I deserved better, and Alhamdulillah, sebenarnya Allah nak prepare me for something bigger and beyond my comprehension indahnya. Thank you Anisah. You’re one special person and I ask Allah to grant you best of the best. You’re the definition of boldness and finest. You do you, and you always do. Anisah is a very special person to me, and dia single. Hehehe. Muehehe
Alise – Ninahhhhhhhh. My other sister from another mother! Allahu Akhbar. You made me feel belong whenever Im with you. I remember, when I arrived in Cardiff, dengan tak reti tak kenai apa-apa, you waited at the bus stop, then we walk to our home for 2 years. You’re the only one yang sama-sama uni, sama-sama faculty and sama-sama serumah. After that, the whole two years were nothing but great and awesome and masyaAllah, tak tau nak explain macam mana, sebab tooo much, tooo much, terlalu banyak memori indah and kenang ingat. You taught me how to render out my first vlog, then we marathon Attack on Titans, you first told me about Studio Ghibli stuffs sebab you’re an animation stuffs, all the Treforest trips, all the Germany trips, and masyaAllah, the list goes on. It is indeed a blissful and memorable to be able to spend the night before the wedding with you, my person, my kak andam, my safe space, my go to person. Allahu Akhbar, really, I am nothing but grateful and beyond happy. You’re my sayang, you made me feel like I can do, you’ve reminded me again and again to love myself and to not be hard on myself. I ask Allah to grant you best of the best here and in Jannah. Ameen.
Marni – Marni is my oldest friend, well, simply because we grew up together, she’s a year younger, my cousin yang lebih kurang sama umur. When mak is in labour, pak su mak su tengah nak bernikah. Marni saw all the phase that I have been through, from kecik sampaila besaq and vice versa. All kind of weird, and then the peak was during our Japan trip early this year, when I told her I wanna do a special video for a special person, she’s down for it, and it’s a special trip for her as well cause it’s her first trip abroad. and then we came back, you’re down to bring Nat around, and down to meet Adib as well. haha, baru terasa macam, heyy, i wanna met this dude yang Ezzah minat sangat tuu. Thank you again for sangatlah amat sungguh excited for my special day, siap buat the signage and props for photobooth. Thank you Marni! You’re the best!

How The ‘Butcher of Bilbao’ Almost Ended Diego Maradona’s Career
In the late seventies and early eighties, Catalonia and the Basque Country had much in common. Only a few years after the death of Francisco Franco and the reintroduction of democracy to Spain, both still smarted from the sting of despotism and the repression of their language, culture and political freedoms over the course of several decades. Singled out for their separatist movements, socialist elements and resistance to Francoism, they had suffered some of the worst excesses of his dictatorship, and had formed a bond of mutual respect and solidarity as a result. That did not extend to the football pitch, however, where two of their biggest clubs were escalating a bitter and acrimonious rivalry which would come to define an iconic era of La Liga.
During the seventies, football in Spain was dominated by the two Madrid sides, Real and Atletico. The former were favourites of Franco during his reign and were, to him, a symbol of a centralised, homogenous, Castilian country, or at least that is how competitors in other regions sought to explain their incredible success. Los Blancos claimed five league titles in the seventies and also won the Copa del Rey on three occasions, while Atletico – formerly favoured by the regime but rapidly positioning themselves as the antithesis of their cross-town rivals – also boasted an imperious side which won two titles and two cup finals. Towards the end of the decade, though, two regional clubs began to reassert themselves, namely Catalan giants Barcelona and one of the biggest clubs in the Basque Country, Athletic Bilbao.
Though another Basque club, Real Sociedad, won two titles at the dawn of the eighties, Barca and Bilbao found themselves 2nd and 4th respectively come the end of the 1981-82 season. This was when the touchpaper to their combustible mutual enmity was ignited, not only by their competition for European places but also by an incident involving Bernd Schuster and the man they called 'Goiko'. His full name was in fact Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga, and he was a lumbering, muscular defender from Alonsotegi, a red-tiled hill town in the green and verdant mountains of Biscay. With a face like smashed rubble and an expression of almost permanent menace, he was a formidable figure in the middle of the Bilbao defence, and from his senior debut in 1975 onwards he became known for his brutal tackling and seeming relish for demolishing opponents by any means.
Schuster, who had already won the European Championships at this point and was one of Barca's most influential players, found this out to his cost during a league fixture against Bilbao early on in the campaign. While attempting to dribble through the Rojiblancos' back line, he was brought down by a thunderous tackle by Goiko, who managed to plant his studs right on the most vulnerable part of the German's knee. The tackle severed Schuster's cruciate ligament, and saw him miss the rest of the season with a miserable nine-month lay off. Barcelona fans were furious, especially when they went on to miss out on the title by a mere two points to Sociedad, with many accusing the Basque defender of deliberately sabotaging their team.
Whether or not there was any merit to these conspiratorial whispers, Goiko soon came to represent a style of football inimical to Barca. The Catalan side was fast becoming one of the most watchable in La Liga, down in no small part to the management of first Udo Lattek and then, come March 1983, Cesar Luis Menotti, the man who had led Argentina to World Cup triumph in 1978. With the likes of Quini, Tente, Francisco Carrasco and Victor Munoz, the Blaugrana boasted a Spanish and Catalan core furnished with both resilience and flair, and once Bernd Schuster regained his fitness he put the final touches to a sophisticated midfield. Then there was the small matter of Diego Maradona, the Argentine sensation signed from Boca Juniors in 1982, who had thrived under Menotti's debonair management at the FIFA World Youth Championship three years before.
Known as El Flaco ('The Thin One') in Argentina, Menotti was a huge influence on Maradona during his time as coach of the national team, with his protégé later stating: "Every time El Flaco spoke I went deathly quiet inside. That was because El Flaco was God." Menotti had a reputation for non-conformity and creative football, and he tried to mould Barcelona in this image with Maradona at the heart of their efforts. Meanwhile, while Athletic Bilbao were anything but unimaginative, their approach was considerably less romantic and far more rooted in a workmanlike ethic, not to mention the individual exploits of their talismanic forwards, Dani and Manu Sarabia. With Goiko at the centre of their defence, they earned a reputation for ruthlessness and cynicism as well as excellent football, and so there came to be a fundamental contrast between their style of play and the expressive and philosophical outlook at Camp Nou, or that's how Barcelona supporters saw it, anyway.
This, combined with Schuster's injury, only fanned the flames of their burgeoning rivalry. As the two teams began vying directly for silverware, Barca fans maintained that their side endeavoured to play the better football, while their Basque counterparts saw this as a sign of infuriating pretension from the Catalans. The early eighties were also marked by increasing tension between the two regions, with ETA – the left-wing revolutionary group at the centre of the Basque conflict, then engaged armed struggle against the Spanish government and a sustained national bombing campaign – stepping up their violent activities and alienating an increasing number of people. It was to this backdrop that Barca and Bilbao went head to head, competing for the league title and, separatist sentiment aside, the right to call themselves the best team in Spain.
In the end, things weren't quite so clear cut, even after several seasons of relentless excitement. Though Barcelona would beat Bilbao twice over the course of the 1982-83 campaign and win the cup, knocking Bilbao out in the quarters, it was the Basque side which triumphed in La Liga, nabbing the title and ending six points ahead of the Catalans who somehow ended up finishing fourth. It was at the beginning of the next season, in which Bilbao would once again win the title despite another two defeats to Barca and a single point between them in the final standings, that the most memorable incident of the season took place. It involved the two contrasting club icons, Maradona and Goiko, as well as one of the most notorious tackles in the history of the game.
On 24 September 1983, Barcelona hosted Bilbao at the Camp Nou and comprehensively dismantled their rivals. Menotti and Bilbao coach Javier Clemente had exchanged numerous barbs in the build-up, each man expressing his disdain for the football of the other, which contributed to a fiery atmosphere even as Barca stormed to an early lead. With the home side three goals to the good midway through the second half, Goiko lost his head after Maradona, who had already provided two assists, picked up the ball in Bilbao's final third and looked to initiate yet another attack. The Bilbao defender launched himself into a vicious tackle from behind, crunching into Maradona's leg and leaving the Argentine screaming in agony, his ankle badly broken.
It is no exaggeration to say that this tackle could have ended things for Maradona. The man who would go on to win the World Cup and become one of the world's greatest footballers with Napoli was now faced with a long spell on the sidelines, with months of rehabilitation needed before he would be able to play again. Menotti was enraged by the incident, stating afterwards that Goiko was part of a race of "anti-footballers" and that he should be banned for life. Just as he had torpedoed Barca's 1981-82 season with his foul on Bernd Schuster, Goiko had once again seriously injured the Blaugrana's best player, and this time it was Athletic Bilbao who would pip them to the title. It was this tackle which earned Goiko the nickname 'The Butcher of Bilbao', a moniker coined by British journalist Edward Owen after he witnessed the foul which left Maradona in such excruciating pain.
While Barcelona would get their revenge eventually, winning the league in 1985 as Bilbao limped to a distant third, there would be more suffering to come for the Catalan side and its Argentine maestro. Maradona made it back in time for the second league match against Goiko and friends, scoring two goals in a 2-1 win at San Mames, before he took part in the 1984 Copa del Rey final, in which Barca and Bilbao would face each other in a fraught and feverish game. The match itself was a Bilbao masterclass, with a goal after 14 minutes from Endika Guarrotxena allowing the Basque side to close ranks, marshalled by the looming form of Goiko at centre-back. The score remained unchanged at the final whistle, before the season finale descended into mayhem.
Having received a nasty gash on his leg after another robust tackle from Goiko as well as deafening taunts from the crowd, Maradona showed that he too had a violent side when Miguel Sola attempted to goad him at the end of the match. Initiating what is possibly still the most extreme fight in a major domestic tournament, Maradona kneed Sola in the head – knocking him out cold – before launching himself with a flurry of kicks into a group of Bilbao players. In the whirlwind of kung-fu moves and punches which followed Goiko managed one last swipe at Maradona, connecting with a flying kick of his own as his nemesis found himself at the centre of the maelstrom. Given the tension between the two clubs, it was a miracle that a riot didn't erupt on the terraces, though there were scuffles between supporters as swathes of the pitchside fencing was torn down.
Maradona wouldn't stick around for Barcelona's title win the following season, with the bust-up against Bilbao the main factor in his move to Naples. King Juan Carlos of Spain had been in attendance at the final while it was estimated that half the population had watched on television, and with dozens of people injured in the subsequent melee neither Barcelona nor Maradona were willing to ride the wave of sensationalist press. Meanwhile, the man who had caused so much of the enmity between Barca and Bilbao had a modest end to his career, leaving Bilbao in 1987 and spending three years at Atletico Madrid before retiring. For his part he had already apologised profusely, claiming he had never intended to injure Maradona. This might have been believable, was 'The Butcher' not reported to have kept the boots he wore that day preserved at home in a glass display case.

PRESENTING: The Time Bastard!
Hiya there folks! The name's Nab, and for the past couple months I've been making an AU! Maybe you've seen some art for it, but yeah! I'm the gal behind it!
So the Time Bastard AU is just this idea I had where Ted Spankoffski manages to harness the power of the Bastard’s Box and become a semi good superhero! Him and his sidekick, Stopwatch, go all around town stopping bad guys!
That's the basic gist of it now, but I have a lot more planned for the AU! Including but not limited to:
The Speedster Hurryman (he's in a hurry!) Being Time Bastard's rival
CCRP being the ones behind the creation of the villains and basically being Ted's origin story
Villain Emma Perkins! She has plant powers.. and believe me, she ain't using them for good.
Villain Paul? Maybe controlled by Pokey??
And obviously some angst for our main hero! Ranging from family troubles, work problems, and the annoying eldritch god that's living in his box!
If you're interested in talking to me about it, my ask box is always open! Or.. you can join us over at @blinkysrewatchparty, where the main AU discussion usually goes on!
